    Six-pack for Thursday

-- Colorado (10-4 in last 14), Detroit (10-2 in last 12), and the Bronx Bombers (11-3 in last 14) are teams that started terribly but have heated it up June. None has huge hill to climb, but Rockies have the biggest of the three.

-- Brewers won for 11th time in their last 14 home games.

-- Astros lost their sixth game in row, are 3-16 in last 19 tilts.

-- David Wright had dramatic, two-out hit to tie game in ninth inning, then Easley homered in 10th to give Mets a 5-4 win in Anaheim, giving Jerry Manuel his first win as Met manager.

-- Jose Reyes' hamstring looked lot better last night than it did Tuesday, when he was removed after game's first batter. The speedy shortstop had three hits, scored three runs.

-- Crowds of 31,607/31,496 saw Rays win pair of one-run tilts from Cubs in St Pete; lot of those fans were for the Cubs, but the Rays' (42-29) bandwagon is slowly starting to grow. Rays are 24-4 in their last 28 home games.

Thursday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but............

      13) I would love to see some Japanese pro baseball games on TV; wouldn't need announcers, just graphics in English. We hear that Fukudome and Iwamura were power hitters in Japan; they sure as hell ain't power hitters here. If they can sell ads for soccer on TV, they should be able to sell it for Japanese ball.

      12) One of the people who works for bat companies says that a bat should weigh two ounces less than it is long; for instance, a 33-inch bat should weigh 31 ounces. The bat Nate McLouth used that shattered and hurt a Pirates' coach was 33.5 inches long and weighed only 30 ounces, "a recipe for disaster", said the dude from the bat company.

      11) Congratulations to David Ortiz, who became a US citizen in the past couple of weeks. Thats called putting your time on the disabled list to good use.

      10) No rookie catcher has ever started the All-Star Game for the National League; Cubs' Geovany Soto has a chance this year.

      9) Royals were a game under .500 on May 19, before they got no-hit by Jon Lester in Boston; since then, they are 9-20.

      8) Texas-El Paso hasn't won its last football game of a season since 1988. Thats a long time, 19 years.

      7) #125 on the PGA Tour's money list is Bob Estes ($358,685); so far, 51golfers have earned $1M+ so far this season, a figure that will get lot higher, now that Eldrick Woods is out with an injured leg. He won't be hogging all the prize money. .

      6) Akinori Iwamura played 123 games at third base last year and will play more at second base this season. The only other guy in modern baseball to play 100+ games at third as rookie, then play more at second the next season was Ryne Sandberg, who played 133 games at 3B in '82, then 157 at 2B next season.

      5) Rays' closer Troy Percival recorded first save at Tropicana Field back in 1998, when he was the Angels' closer.

      4) Mark Cuban will pay Jason Kidd, Dirk Nowitzki a combined $39M next season; both are playing in the Olympics in August which would concern me, if I was paying their salaries. Cuban has spoken out against the hypocrisy of the Olympics, and he is right; people spouting off about amateur sports as they rake in a ton of money with both hands.

      3) Bronx Bombers signed Sidney Ponson, who pitched well for the Rangers, but got released because he has various off-field issues. If Texas RELEASES a pitcher, there has to be a reason, and a darned good one.

      2) When the Cubs played for the first time ever at the Trop on Monday, it was 112th different ballpark they've played in since the franchise started back in the 1870's.

      1) So the PGA Tour has to go the rest of the year without the best golfer in the world, Eldrick Woods. Interesting to see how TV ratings will be affected. From the sound of the injuries, will be interesting to see how long it takes for Woods to return.

Major League Baseball - Tips & Trends

          MLB

          Thursday, June 19

We will re-post when projected scores and key injuries are updated.

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
          Tips and Trends
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Diego Padres at New York Yankees [YES | 1:05 PM ET]

Padres: The Padres were excited about Josh Banks and now we know why. In his five starts this season, Banks has allowed just five runs over 24 innings. Banks actually had a tough outing by his standards in his last start against Cleveland, allowing three runs in five innings of work. Banks had not allowed more than one run in any of his four starts prior to that game. Banks has a 1.93 ERA in his two road starts this season.

Padres are 8-21 in their last 29 road games.

          Key Injuries - NONE

          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Yankees (-220, O/U 9):The Joba Chamberlain saga enters its next chapter tonight as he makes his fourth start of the season. Chamberlain has gotten progressively better in his three starts with his most recent outing versus the Astros being his best to date. In that game Chamberlain went six strong innings, allowing just one run. He did, however, walk four batters. That's been a concern because since becoming a starter Chamberlain has given out nine walks in 12.2 innings of work. The OVER is 2-1 in Chamberlain's three starts this season.

Yankees are 11-3 in their last 13 home games.
The OVER is 7-2-1 in New York's last 10 interleague games.

          Key Injuries - NONE

          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Houston Astros at Baltimore Orioles [7:05 PM ET]

Astros: Shawn Chacon pitched well in his last outing against the Yankees but took a no-decision in a tough 2-1 loss for the Astros. Chacon needed a strong performance because in his two starts prior to taking on the Yankees he was lit up for 12 hits and 11 runs in just six innings on the mound. Chacon has started eight games on the road this year but only factored in the decision twice, going 1-1 with an ERA of 4.36. The OVER is 7-3 in Chacon's last 10 starts.

          Key Injuries - NONE

          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Orioles (-130, O/U 10): Brian Burres has been crushed in his last four starts, giving up 35 hits and 24 runs in just 18 innings pitched. Amazingly, the Orioles won three of those games by scoring a combined 25 runs to offset Burres' terrible pitching. Burres has benefited from strong run support all year. He's 3-2 at home, despite sporting a gaudy 7.09 ERA at Camden Yards. As expected, the OVER has been a cash cow with Burres on the hill. The OVER is 5-1 in his last six starts.

          Key Injuries - NONE

          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Chicago Cubs at Tampa Bay Rays [7:10 PM ET]

Cubs: Sean Gallagher has pitched extremely well in his last four starts but has just a 2-2 record to show for it. In his last 22.2 innings pitched, Gallagher has allowed just nine runs, giving the Cubs a chance to win each time out. He's on a two-game losing streak thanks in large part to a lack of run support. The Cubs scored a combined two runs in those games. The road hasn't been kind to Gallagher this season, where he's 0-3 with a 5.79 ERA. The UNDER has cashed in Gallagher's last five starts.

Cubs are 16-6 in their last 22 games overall.
The UNDER is 9-3-1 in Chicago's last 13 interleague games.

Key Injuries - OF Alfonso Soriano (.283; broken hand) is out at least 6 weeks.

          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Rays (-160, O/U 8.5): James Shields hasn't won a game since May 9 and his last two starts have been awful. Shields lasted one inning against the Red Sox after beaning Coco Crisp but managed to allow four runs in that inning. The Angels then touched him up in his next outing for 10 hits and six runs over eight innings. Both of those games were on the road, however. Shields now returns home where he is 3-1 with a dazzling 1.72 ERA in seven starts.

Rays are 23-5 in their last 28 games on field turf.
The UNDER is 13-5-1 in Tampa Bay's last 19 games overall.

Key Injuries - OF Carl Crawford (.265) has completed his 4-game suspension and will play.
2B Akinori Iwamura (.273) is appealing his 3-game suspension and will play.

          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Cleveland Indians at Colorado Rockies [9:05 PM ET]

Indians: Jeremy Sowers is the epitome of an average pitcher. He has three no-decisions in his four starts this season. He hasn't pitched well enough to win yet he hasn't been quite bad enough to doom his team either. Everything about Sowers is average. He's given up 15 runs in 18 innings, while striking out eight and walking five. Sowers lone lose this season came on the road against Detroit, where he gave up five runs in four innings. The UNDER is 3-1 in Sowers four starts this season.

Indians are 5-15 in their last 20 road games.
The OVER is 6-3-1 in Cleveland's last 10 road games.

Key Injuries - C Victor Martinez (.278; elbow surgery) is out 6-8 weeks.

          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Rockies (-125, O/U 10.5): Jorge De La Rosa had been batting practice all season long until he faced the White Sox and pitched five innings of one-hit, shutout ball. It was just the second time in De La Rosa's six starts that he's given up fewer than two runs in a game. De La Rosa has started six games against the Indians over his career and the results haven't been pretty. He's 1-3 with a 7.67 ERA versus the Tribe. The OVER is 2-1 in De La Rosa's three starts at Coors Field.

Rockies are 10-4 in their last 14 games overall.

          Key Injuries - NONE

          PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Major League Baseball – Streaking Pitchers

            MLB

            Thursday, June 19

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
            Streaking Starting Pitchers
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A look at a few of Thursday's hottest and coldest pitchers.

            Streaking

Gavin Floyd, Chicago White Sox (7-3, 3.30 ERA)

Here's one guy Ozzie Guillen isn't yelling at these days. The White Sox have won this big righty's last four starts, making for some nice paydays.

Floyd doesn't have a pile of major league starts under his belt (53), so he's managed to fly under the radar to this point. That means he usually sees decent odds, which is nice for a pitcher who always gives his team a shot at winning.

Floyd has only allowed more than four runs in two of his 13 starts this season and he hasn't done that since May 11.

You might want to keep an eye on the over for Thursday's game against the Pirates though. Floyd has given up a homer in each of his last five outings and he faces an umpire who forces you to pitch across the plate, Greg Gibson.

Gibson has seen a 9-5 over/under record play out in his games and he has a tight strike zone with just 60.5 percent of his pitches called for strikes.

            Slumping

Zack Greinke, Kansas City Royals (5-4, 3.48 ERA)

You're used to seeing this guy listed as one of the streaking pitchers. But lately Greinke hasn't been so hot.

He is 0-3 with two no-decisions in his last five starts and he allowed a combined 21 earned runs over those outings. The worse news is that even when he's pitching well lately, he isn't getting the run support.

The righty tossed seven innings of shutout ball in his last start against Arizona, which resulted in a 1-0 loss. It should be noted though, that Greinke threw seven walks in that game.

            Eric Stults, L.A. Dodgers (0-0, 0.00 ERA)

Due to a couple of injuries in L.A.'s normal starting rotation, the lefty Stults will get the call-up from AAA for his first start of the year. Stults has just 18 starts in the majors to his credit over the past two seasons and his most recent appearances haven't been pretty.

The Dodgers lost the last six times the southpaw appeared on the mound and the over cashed in his last five appearances. He went 1-4 in five starts last year for L.A. with a 5.82 ERA.

                STARS

                Wednesday

-J.D. Drew, Red Sox, was 4-for-5 with a double and a homer, and drove in four runs in a 7-4 win over the Phillies.

-Placido Polanco, Tigers, was 4-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and scored three times in a 7-2 rout of the Giants.

-Alex Rodriguez, Yankees, went 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs in an 8-5 win over San Diego. A-Rod has homered in four straight games, and added a stolen base and two runs scored.

-Damion Easley, Mets, doubled and hit the go-ahead homer in the 10th inning of a 5-4 victory over the Angels, giving interim manager Jerry Manuel his first win in charge of New York.

-Chipper Jones, Braves, homered and had two hits to keep his major league-leading average at .400 during a 5-2 win over Texas.

-Mark Buehrle, White Sox, carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning and wound up allowing four hits and two runs in eight innings of an 8-2 win over the White Sox.

-James Loney, Dodgers, homered and doubled to drive in a pair in a 6-1 rout of the Reds.

                NO LOVE IN PHILLY

J.D. Drew tied a career high with four hits and fell a triple short of the cycle in Boston's 7-4 win over the Phillies. Booed each time he came up, Drew has been vilified in Philadelphia since refusing to sign with the Phillies after they drafted him with the second overall pick in the 1997 amateur draft. Now with his fourth team, the rude treatment hasn't changed.

                A-ROD, YANKS ROLLING

Alex Rodriguez homered for the fourth straight game in the Yankees' 8-5 win over San Diego. New York has won a season-high six straight and 11 of 14, moving a season-best six games above .500. The Yankees go for their second series sweep in a row Thursday.

                METS WIN FOR MANUEL

Damion Easley hit a tiebreaking home run in the 10th inning to give the Mets a 4-3 win over the Angels, and interim Jerry Manuel his first victory since taking over for Willie Randolph.

                BACK AT 'YA

Dan Haren allowed one run and drove in three as Arizona routed Oakland 11-1. Haren limited his former team to four hits over seven innings, walking one and striking out eight. Haren, who was acquired from Oakland last winter in an eight-player deal, gave up a one-out single and walk in the first but then retired the next 12 batters.

                LATE-INNING POWER

David DeJesus and Alex Gordon homered for the tying and go-ahead runs in the eighth inning to help Kansas City beat St. Louis 3-2. A night earlier, Mike Aviles' eighth-inning homer made the Royals a winner. Kansas City lost its first 37 games when trailing after seven innings.

                ONE IS A MAGIC NUMBER

Baltimore beat the Astros 2-1 in 10 innings Wednesday night for its fourth straight one-run decision, three of them wins. The O's are 17-10 in one-run games compared to 13-31 last year.

                AILING

Cubs ace Carlos Zambrano was sent back to Chicago to be examined by a doctor after leaving in the seventh inning against Tampa Bay because of discomfort in his right shoulder. ... Ken Griffey Jr. was out of the Reds' lineup for a second consecutive game because of illness. ... Rangers slugger Milton Bradley was out with a strained left quadriceps. ... Cardinals starter Anthony Reyes went on the DL with a strained right elbow.

                SNAPPING STREAKS

Marcus Thames had his stretch of consecutive games with a home run end at five against San Francisco. He had tied a Tigers record. ... Corey Hart had two hits to snap an 0-for-18 slide for the Brewers. ... Brian Bannister won for the first time in 11 tries while starting a night game in Kansas City's 3-2 win over St. Louis. ... Angels closer Francisco Rodriguez snapped his franchise-record streak of 25 straight save conversions by giving up David Wright's tying single in the ninth inning of a 3-2, 10-inning loss to the Mets.

                SPEAKING

"They're not going to forget, I know that much. It's always one of those situations where you go out there and battle and you're going to hear things that you don't normally hear at other parks. It makes it fun.'' -Red Sox outfielder J.D. Drew, who homered and had four hits in a 7-4 win over the Phillies. Drew has been vilified in Philadelphia since refusing to sign there after being drafted with the second overall pick in the 1997 amateur draft.

Hot Lines: Thursday's best MLB bets
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Cubs at Tampa Bay (-150, 8 1/2)

As the Chicago Cubs wait for the news about Carlos Zambrano's shoulder, they are also looking to avoid their first three-game losing streak of the year today in Tampa Bay after dropping the first two games of the series to the Rays.

Today could be better for Cubs bettors with a struggling James Shields on the hill for the Rays. Shields has three complete games under his belt already this year, but has been a different pitcher lately. Two starts ago he couldn't get out of the first inning against the Red Sox, allowing four runs on three hits and he was smacked for two homers and six earned runs in a 6-1 loss to the Angels in his most recent start.

If you aren't feeling the underdog here, the over might be a good alternative. Sean Gallagher is throwing smoke for the Cubs, but their bullpen is working on a 6.45 ERA over the last three games.

                      Pick: Cubs

                      Houston at Baltimore (-125, 9 1/2)

This total has been a little tricky for some sportsbooks. The number opened at 10, then dropped it to 9 1/2, and now has it back up at 10 for the time being at least. Most other books still have the over/under at 9 1/2 runs, though they're already juicing the over - and with good reason.

Today's starters, Shawn Chacon for Houston and Brian Burres for the O's, have combined to play over the total in 12 of their last 15 starts.

Chacon allowed only one earned run over 6 1/3 innings in his last outing, but surrendered 11 runs over a six-inning stretch before that. Meanwhile Burres is really struggling to hold it together. He's given up 24 earned runs over his last four starts.

                      Pick: Over

San Diego Padres at New York Yankees [YES | 1:05 PM ET]

Padres: The Padres were excited about Josh Banks and now we know why. In his five starts this season, Banks has allowed just five runs over 24 innings. Banks actually had a tough outing by his standards in his last start against Cleveland, allowing three runs in five innings of work. Banks had not allowed more than one run in any of his four starts prior to that game. Banks has a 1.93 ERA in his two road starts this season.

Padres are 8-21 in their last 29 road games.
The UNDER is 8-2 in San Diego's last 10 Thursday games.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 3

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Houston Astros at Baltimore Orioles [7:05 PM ET]

Astros: Shawn Chacon pitched well in his last outing against the Yankees but took a no-decision in a tough 2-1 loss for the Astros. Chacon needed a strong performance because in his two starts prior to taking on the Yankees he was lit up for 12 hits and 11 runs in just six innings on the mound. Chacon has started eight games on the road this year but only factored in the decision twice, going 1-1 with an ERA of 4.36. The OVER is 7-3 in Chacon's last 10 starts.

Astros are 4-17 in their last 21 games overall.
The UNDER is 8-2 in Houston's last 10 road games.

Key Injuries - 1B/DH Lance Berkman (.362; leg) is probable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

Orioles (-130, O/U 10): Brian Burres has been crushed in his last four starts, giving up 35 hits and 24 runs in just 18 innings pitched. Amazingly, the Orioles won three of those games by scoring a combined 25 runs to offset Burres' terrible pitching. Burres has benefited from strong run support all year. He's 3-2 at home, despite sporting a gaudy 7.09 ERA at Camden Yards. As expected, the OVER has been a cash cow with Burres on the hill. The OVER is 5-1 in his last six starts.

Orioles are 5-0 in the last 5 meetings.
The OVER is 12-4-1 in Baltimore's last 17 games overall.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 7

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 3

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (Side Play of the Day)

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Rockies (-125, O/U 10.5): Jorge De La Rosa had been batting practice all season long until he faced the White Sox and pitched five innings of one-hit, shutout ball. It was just the second time in De La Rosa's six starts that he's given up fewer than two runs in a game. De La Rosa has started six games against the Indians over his career and the results haven't been pretty. He's 1-3 with a 7.67 ERA versus the Tribe. The OVER is 2-1 in De La Rosa's three starts at Coors Field.

Rockies are 10-4 in their last 14 games overall.
The UNDER is 7-1-1 in Colorado's last 9 interleague games.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 6
