    Weekend Sports Preview

The NBA Finals don’t resume until Sunday, so MLB, AFL, WNBA and NASCAR should be able to grab some headlines and the attention of bettors through the rest of the weekend.

Interleague play returns to baseball this weekend with a couple of old playoff rivalries on tap when Boston travels to Cincinnati and Oakland crosses the bay to face San Francisco. Weekend series in which National League teams will get to use the DH include Pittsburgh at Baltimore, the Dodgers at Detroit, San Diego at Cleveland, the Cubs at Toronto, Florida at Tampa Bay, Colorado at the White Sox, Atlanta at the Angels and Washington at Seattle.

American League pitchers will be forced into the batter's box this weekend when Texas takes on the Mets, the Yankees visit Houston, Minnesota faces Milwaukee and Kansas City goes up against Arizona. The lone NL-only matchup of the weekend is a good one as Philadelphia visits St. Louis.

Week 16 in the AFL kicks off on Friday night when New Orleans takes on Orlando (-3.5). Six games follow on a busy Saturday, including Kansas City at Los Angeles (-4.5), Chicago at Georgia (-2.5), Cleveland at Philadelphia (-9.5), Grand Rapids at Columbus (+3.5), New York at Dallas (-7.5) and Tampa Bay at San Jose (-6).

The WNBA gets the weekend started on Friday night with four games on the schedule. They include Indiana at winless Atlanta, Seattle at San Antonio, Washington at Chicago and Connecticut at Los Angeles. There are four more games on Saturday with Detroit at Phoenix, Minnesota ay New York, Seattle at Houston and Los Angeles at Sacramento. Sunday’s schedule features only one game as San Antonio takes on Indiana.

Michigan International Speedway is the destination for NASCAR this weekend, as the LifeLock 400 gets underway on Sunday. Carl Edwards won this race last season and he’ll be among the favorites, which will also include points leader Kyle Busch and defending Cup champion Jimmie Johnson.

The Lakers and Celtics get a couple days off before returning to the court for Game 5 of the NBA Finals on Sunday night in Los Angeles. Boston roared back from a 20-point third-quarter deficit to win Game 4 97-91 on Thursday night, and take a 3-1 series lead. Game 6, if necessary, is scheduled to be played back in Boston on Tuesday.

      Six-pack for Friday

-- Mets led 4-0 in 8th inning, took Santana out after he threw seven innings (116 pitches) but bullpen blew game 5-4 in 10.

-- YES announcer Ken Singleton claimed the other night that A's haven't had good leadoff hitter since Bert Campaneris in early 70's; apparently, he never heard of Rickey Henderson.

-- Jason Giambi earns $21M this season, yet he can't field a ground ball- he's awful. Every time Scott Boras watches the Bronx Bombers play, Mark Teixeira's price tag goes up some.

-- Phillies, Marlins were 0-0 in sixth when Phils scored twice on a wild pitch, with Rollins, Victorino scoring. Speed kills.

-- Lakers led by 18 at half without Kobe Bryant scoring one hoop (he made three foul shots). LA had 58 points at half, wound up with 91. They lost a game they once led by 24.

-- Today's teams in NBA seem incapable of playing solid ball for 48:00. Very strange series. Increasingly strange league

Friday's List of 13: Baseball's thirteen best amateur drafts

Here is Baseball America's list of greatest drafts ever........

        13) Reds, 1965-- Johnny Bench, Hal McRae, Bernie Carbo; 17 All-Star Game appearance from Reds' first-ever amateur draft. Carbo was the first-round pick, Bench the second. Whoops.

        12) Red Sox, 1989-- Jeff Bagwell, Mo Vaughn, Paul Quantrill; Sox traded Bagwell to Houston for Larry Andersen, where he became a big star. Vaughn ate his way out of baseball, but not before he made himself a fortune.

        11) A's, 1965-- Sal Bando, Rick Monday, Gene Tenace; Captain Sal was rock of the early-70's dynasty; Monday was first-ever pick in the first-ever draft; A's later traded him to Cubs for Ken Holtzman, which solidified A's rotation. Tenace was MVP of the '72 World Series.

        10) Twins, 1989-- Marty Cordova, Chuck Knoblauch, Denny Neagle, Scott Erickson-- Two Rookies of Year (Knoblauch and Cordova), two 20-game winners (Neagle, Erickson); even their 52nd-round pick (Denny Hocking) played for while in majors.

        9) Bronx, 1990-- Andy Pettitte, Jorge Posada, Carl Everett)-- If there has been more underrated player in last 20 years than the veteran catcher Posada, I don't know who it is. Everett was in 1992 expansion draft, selected by Marlins, luckily for him.

        8) Padres, 1981-- Tony Gwynn, John Kruk, Kevin McReynolds; Laconic MacReynolds was the first-round pick from Arkansas who cared more for duck hunting than baseball, though he had a pretty good career. Gwynn was a hooper in college, a keeper in big leagues. As for Kruk, well, he hit .300 in 1,200 games.

        7) Red Sox, 1983-- Roger Clemens, Ellis Burks-- Clemens wasn't picked by first 18 teams in draft, he had an arm operation after that. I saw him at Cooperstown in '84, when he was rehabbing the arm. Apparently, I should have gotten his autograph.

        6) Red Sox, 1968-- Cecil Cooper, Lynn McGlothen, Bill Lee, Ben Ogilvie and John Curtis-- This draft and '90 White Sox are only drafts to pick four future All-Stars. They combined to play in ten All-Star games.

        5) Cubs, 1984-- Drafted eight big leaguers, but two of them are still pitching, 24 years later; Greg Maddux, Jamie Moyer. Sadly for Cubs, neither one pitches for Chicago now-- they have won a combined total of 585 major league games.

        4) Indians, 1989-- Jim Thome, Brian Giles, Curtis Lezcanic- Did select ten major leaguers, but didn't sign their first round pick, so scouting director got fired. Thome was 13th-round pick and Giles was 17th- round pick. Pretty good scouting.

        3) Red Sox, 1976-- Wade Boggs, Bruce Hurst, John Tudor-- It is pretty good when you find Hall of Famer in 7th round, but in Hurst, they found a terrific starter, and Tudor was terrific for a little while for Cardinals in mid-80's.

        2) Tigers, 1976-- Alan Trammell, Jack Morris, Dan Petry, Steve Kemp-- Not only that, but they picked Ozzie Smith in the 7th, but he didn't sign until the next year, when San Diego took him The four guys they took played in combined 13 All-Star games

        1) Dodgers, 1968-- Experts say this is far and away best draft in baseball history: Garvey-Lopes-Buckner-Cey-Paciorek-Bobby Valentine and Doyle Alexander. 15 guys LA drafted played in majors eventually, playing in a combined 23 All-Star games.

Florida Marlins at Tampa Bay Rays [7:10 PM ET]

Marlins: Ryan Tucker gets his second career start for the Marlins on Friday night. Tucker pitched well in his first outing against the Reds, allowing just two hits and one run in five innings of work. He did, however, walk five batters, which could be a problem against a Tampa squad that is very proficient when it comes to driving in baserunners. Tucker did a good job of not allowing those walks to hurt him by striking out six Reds as well.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

                        PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Rays (-150, O/U 9.5): The Rays return home after a long West Coast road trip, but that's not necessarily a good thing for starting pitcher Andy Sonnanstine. The 6-foot-3 right-hander is 4-1 on the road this season, compared to just 2-2 at home. He hasn't pitched well overall of late, going 0-2 with two no-decisions in his last four starts. In Sonnanstine's last 21.2 innings pitched he's given up 35 hits and 19 runs.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

Red Sox: Jason Masterson has pitched very well in his four starts for the Red Sox, going 3-0 with a 2.59 ERA. Masterson has allowed only one run in three of his four starts. The one problem Masterson has had early in his career is walks. He's given up 12 free passes in 24.1 innings of work. As good as Masterson has been, he's had the luxury of starting all of his games at the friendly confines of Fenway Park, making this the first road start of his young career.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

                        PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Reds (-115, O/U 9): This isn't the way the Reds and Aaron Harang envisioned the 2008 season going. Harang is just 2-9 with a 4.31 ERA and hasn't won a game since May 12. Since then, Harang is 0-4-2 and the Reds have lost all six of those starts. Harang has been particularly bad in his last three outings, giving up 30 hits and 17 runs in just 15.1 innings of work. Harang is just 1-3 in seven home starts this season but he does have a respectable 3.72 ERA. The OVER is 4-1 in Harang's last five starts.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

                        PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Philadelphia Phillies at St. Louis Cardinals [8:15 PM ET]

Phillies: The Phillies have had a lot of success when Kyle Kendrick takes the mound this season, going 9-1 in his last 10 starts. Over that span, the Phillies have scored at least five runs in every game. Even though he's been helped out by a lot of run support, Kendrick has pitched pretty well recently. In his last 23 innings of work Kendrick has allowed 13 runs and that includes a 5-run outing against the Astros. The OVER has been money with Kendrick on the mound. Nine of his last 10 starts have gone OVER the total.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

                        PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Cardinals (-110, O/U 9.5): Kyle Lohse is having a strong season for the Cards, going 7-2 with a 3.92 ERA. Lohse has been on fire of late, winning four consecutive starts. In his last 23 innings pitched, Lohse has only allowed a total of five runs. Lohse has faired well at home, going 3-1 with an ERA of 3.24 in eight starts. Three of Lohse's last four starts have gone UNDER the total.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

                        PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Oakland Athletics at San Francisco Giants [10:15 PM ET]

A's (-120, O/U 8.5): Greg Smith has fallen on hard times of late, winning just twice in his last 10 appearances. Smith was blasted in his last two starts against the Rangers and Angels, allowing 12 runs in 11.1 innings pitched. He's been particularly bad on the road, going 1-3 with an ERA of 4.66 in six starts. Even though he hasn't pitched well, the UNDER is the way to go with Smith on the mound. In his last 10 starts, the UNDER has cashed seven times.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

                        PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Giants: Barry Zito has been the butt of a lot of jokes this season, but he's actually 2-2 in his last four starts. In those games, he's allowed three runs or less three times. The big problem with Zito has been putting runners on base. He's walked 40 batters in 66.1 innings pitched this season. That has a lot to do with Zito's ridiculously high 1.87 WHIP. The Over is 3-1 in Zito's last four starts.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

                        PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

                          Friday, June 13

New York Yankees at Houston (8:05 p.m. EDT). Joba Chamberlain (1-2, 2.67 ERA) gets another start in his transition from the bullpen, not to mention a chance to hit, when another round of interleague play begins.

                          STARS

                          Thursday

                          - Bronson Arroyo, Reds, went 2-for-2 with a solo homer and was just effective on the mound, giving up two hits in six shutout innings. He got a no-decision in a 6-2 win over St. Louis.

                          - Jamie Moyer, Phillies, allowed just two hits in eight innings of a 3-0 win over the Marlins.

                          - Andy Pettitte, Yankees, gave up one run on five hits in eight innings, helping New York to a 5-1 win over Oakland and a three-game sweep.

                          - Jake Peavy, Padres, came off the disabled list and allowed three hits in six innings, combining with three relievers on a 9-0 shutout of the Dodgers.

                          - Ryan Doumit, Pirates, homered and drove in three runs in a 7-5 win over the Nationals.

                          - J.D. Drew, Red Sox, keeps filling in well for injured David Ortiz, this timing hitting a homer and driving in two runs in a 9-2 rout of the Orioles.

-Alex Gordon, Royals, homered, doubled and drove in a pair of runs to help Kansas City rally for a 6-5 victory over the Rangers.

-Fred Lewis, Giants, homered and drove in three runs in a 10-7 win over the Rockies.

                          MARLINS SAY, 'NO MOYER!'

Phillies starter Jamie Moyer took a no-hitter into the eighth inning of a 3-0 win over Florida, improving to 9-0 against the Marlins. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the last pitcher to win his first nine or more starts against one team was Pedro Martinez, who won his first 12 starts against Seattle from 1998-2004. The only other active pitcher with a 9-0 record or better against one team is Randy Johnson, who is 12-0 against the Cubs.

                          HOME SWEET HOME

Boston beat Baltimore 9-2 and improved to a major league best 28-7 at home and 18-3 in its last 21 games at Fenway Park. ... The Cubs won their 11th straight at Wrigley Field and upped their home record to 29-8 with a 3-2, 11-inning win over Atlanta.

                          ROAD WOES

The Braves fell to 7-24 on the road this season with a 3-2, 11-inning loss to the Cubs. Atlanta has lost its last 21 one-run games on the road since August, matching the longest such streak in major league history. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Kansas City lost 21 straight one-run games on the road from 2000-01.

                          PETTITTE ON TRACK

Andy Pettitte bounced back from giving up a career high-tying 10 runs last Saturday against Kansas City to shut down the Athletics in a 4-1 win, and tie Ron Guidry with his 170th victory with New York. Pettitte allowed one run and five hits in a season-high eight innings.

                          WHO NEEDS PAPI?

J.D. Drew has filled in admirably for injured Red Sox slugger David Ortiz. Drew hit a two-run homer and a double in a 9-2 win over Baltimore, and is 18-for-36 with six homers and 15 RBIs since the designatted hitter has been sidelined with a wrist injury. Drew raised his average from .282 to .324, and has five doubles, a triple and 15 runs scored in that span.

                          AILING INDIANS

Despite five key players from last year's AL Central champion team on the disabled list, the Indians belted out 18 hits including homers by Shin-Soo Choo and Grady Sizemore in a 12-2 rout of the Twins. Cleveland placed All-Star catcher Victor Martinez and second baseman Josh Barfield on the 15-day DL before the game. Already out are right-handers Jake Westbrook and Fausto Carmona and designated hitter Travis Hafner.

                          WELCOME BACK

San Diego's Jake Peavy, pitching for the first time in nearly a month since injuring his elbow, threw six solid innings and combined with three relievers on a five-hitter to lift the Padres to a 9-0 win over the Dodgers. Peavy had been sidelined with a strained right elbow since he lost his last outing on May 14, an 8-5 decision at the Chicago Cubs.

                          DURHAM HITS 2K

Ray Durham got his 2,000th hit in the Giants' 10-7 win over the Rockies. Durham is already planning on giving his mom the ball from hit, a two-run single up the middle in the fourth. He still can recall his first big league hit, a bunt single on April 26, 1995.

                          SPEAKING

"That's a lot of hits - he's old.'' -Giants first baseman Rich Aurilia, after second baseman Ray Durham recorded his 2,000th hit in a 10-7 win over the Rockies.

                          SEASONS

1905 - Christy Mathewson of the New York Giants pitched his second no-hit game, beating the Chicago Cubs and Mordecai Brown 1-0. Mathewson and Brown matched no-hitters for eight innings. The Giants got two hits in the ninth for the win.

1912 - Christy Mathewson recorded his 300th career victory with a 3-2 triumph over the Chicago Cubs.

1921 - Babe Ruth of the New York Yankees pitched the first five innings and hit two home runs in an 11-8 victory over the Detroit Tigers.

1948 - Babe Ruth Day at Yankee Stadium drew 49,641 fans who saw Ruth's No. 3 retired and the Yankees beat the Cleveland Indians 5-3.

1957 - Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox hit three home runs and drove in five runs in a 9-3 victory over the Cleveland Indians as Williams became the first AL player to have two three-homer games in a season.

1973 - The Los Angeles Dodgers' infield of Steve Garvey (first base), Davey Lopes (second base), Ron Cey (third base) and Bill Russell (shortstop) played together for the first time in a 16-3 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. The quartet would set a major league record for longevity by playing 8 1/2 years in the same infield.

2001 - Texas' Ruben Sierra homered from both sides of the plate for the sixth time in his career, but the Rangers lost 5-3 to the Dodgers.

2003 - Roger Clemens reached 300 wins and became the third pitcher with 4,000 strikeouts, leading the New York Yankees over the St. Louis Cardinals 5-2. Clemens, the 21st pitcher to make it to 300, allowed two runs in 6 2-3 innings and struck out 10, raising his total to 4,006. Clemens joined Nolan Ryan (5,714) and Steve Carlton (4,136) in the 4,000-strikeout club.

Texas at New York Mets (-155, 9 1/2)

It's oh so tempting to fade the Mets right now after they've lost seven of their last 10 games, including last night's extra-innings meltdown. But in reality, a lot of those losses could have gone either way and if Billy Wagner could throw a strike, this club probably wouldn't be getting driven through the New York media gauntlet right now.

So instead, we'll look at the over in this game because the Rangers are one of the few teams with a bullpen as bad as the Mets'. Both bullpens have identical 6.63 ERAs over the last 10 games and with Texas' high-scoring offense in the game, the scoreboard operator better get ready for a busy night.

                              Pick: Over

Colorado at Chicago White Sox (-134, 9)

The White Sox are coming off a frustrating sweep in Detroit, but bettors shouldn't worry about that. They are back in the South Side where their 20-9 record is the second best in the American League. That advantage will be compounded against Colorado, whose 10-24 road record is second worst in the NL.

The Sox have struggled against lefties this season, but they've had success against Colorado's Jeff Francis before. It was a couple of years ago, but Chicago rung up five earned runs off Francis in a 15-5 blowout. It's not likely they'll get that kind of offense today (bettors might be wise to look at the under) but with hot bats, the better bullpen and the comforts of home on their side, the White Sox are the smart bet here.

                              Pick: White Sox
