    SCOREBOARD

    Thursday, June 12

Los Angeles Dodgers at San Diego (3:35 p.m. EDT). Jake Peavy (4-3, 2.91 ERA) will make his first start since being placed on the 15-day disabled list on May 20 with lingering pain in his elbow.

    STARS

    Wednesday

    - Corey Hart, Brewers, hit two homers and drove in four runs in a 10-6 rout of Houston.

    - Ryan Dempster, Cubs, gave up four hits and struck out 11 in a complete-game, 7-2 victory over Atlanta.

    - Jorge Cantu, Marlins, hit a pair of solo home runs and scored three times, the last on Dan Uggla's grand slam in the ninth inning of a 6-2 win over the Phillies.

    - Carlos Beltran, Mets, hit a two-run, game-winning homer in the 13th inning for a 5-3 win over Arizona. Beltran finished with four RBIs and scored twice.

    - Braden Looper, Cardinals, gave up three hits and struck out four in a complete-game, 10-0 rout of the Reds.

    - David Murphy, Rangers, hit a grand slam and added a solo homer for a career-high five RBIs, helping Texas to an 11-5 rout of the Royals.

    - Justin Verlander, Tigers, gave up four hits and struck out three in a complete-game, 5-1 victory over the White Sox.

    - Felix Hernandez, Mariners, gave up four hits and walk over eight innings in a 2-1 win over Toronto.

    GRAND WIN

Dan Uggla hit a game-ending grand slam with one out in the ninth off Tom Gordon, helping Florida beat Philadelphia 6-2. It was the first game-ending home run in Uggla's career, and the second in Marlins history: Bobby Bonilla did it Sept. 16, 1997, against the Rockies.

    TOUGH LOSS

Garret Atkins slid home safely in the ninth inning when Giants catcher Bengie Molina dropped the ball trying to make a swipe tag, giving Colorado a 1-0 win over San Francisco. Atkins had tagged up on Yorvit Torrealba's flyout, and left fielder Fred Lewis' throw beat him. Atkins was initially called out by plate umpire Fieldin Culbreth, but was ruled safe when the ump saw the ball on the ground. Molina was charged with an error.

    SORE-IANO

Alfonso Soriano could miss up to six weeks with a broken left hand after the Cubs star was hit by a pitch Wednesday night against Atlanta. It happened in the second inning on a pitch from Jeff Bennett. The Chicago leadoff man will be in a splint for three weeks, Cubs spokesman Peter Chase said. Soriano spent time on the disabled list earlier this season with a calf injury.

    MURPHY'S BIG NIGHT

Rangers outfielder David Murphy hit a grand slam to spur a seven-run inning in an 11-5 rout of the Royals, then added a solo shot in the ninth inning for good measure. The five RBIs were a career high for Murphy, who leads AL rookies with 46 RBIs and 77 hits.

    MILTON VS LEFEBVRE

Milton Bradley stormed out of the Texas clubhouse after an 11-5 victory over Kansas City and bounded up four flights of stairs looking for Royals TV announcer Ryan Lefebvre. Bradley heard what he considered derogative remarks made by Lefebvre on a TV in the clubhouse. Lefebvre said he had been discussing how Josh Hamilton had turned his life around from alcohol and cocaine addictions, while Bradley - known for his volatile temper - had not made an effort to get in the good graces of baseball fans.

    DOUMIT DOIN' IT

Pirates catcher Ryan Doumit homered for the third time in two games and also singled twice in a 3-1 win over the Nationals. Doumit is 7-for-8 in the series, after going 4-for-4 with two homers and two doubles Tuesday night. The hot streak comes after he went 1-for-12 the previous three games in his return from a stint on the disabled list.

    GETTING STINGY

Randy Wolf combined with two relievers on a five-hitter, helping San Diego beat the Dodgers 4-1. Wolf (5-4) had his fifth straight outing where he allowed two runs or fewer, giving up just four hits in seven innings. He's won three straight decisions in his last five starts, with a 1.90 ERA during that span.

    TROUBLE BREWING

The Astros had a rough night with Milwaukee in town. Not only did they give up five home runs and allow the Brewers to snap a five-game skid at Minute Maid Park, but Houston catcher Brad Ausmus and manager Cecil Cooper were each tossed on seperate plays moments apart.

    TWIN (STREAK) KILLING

Justin Morneau drove in three runs to help Minnesota beat Cleveland 8-5 and snap a six-game losing streak. The win also snapped a long winless streak for Nick Blackburn, who allowed two runs and seven hits over six innings to win for the first time since May 16.

    SPEAKING

"That's a real bummer. ... It's hard to sit back and enjoy the victory when one of your best players, one of the leaders of your team, goes down. He's proven in the past he's a pretty darn quick healer. It's up to the other guys to pick him up.'' - Cubs starter Ryan Dempster, on Alfonso Soriano breaking a bone in his left hand that could sideline the star outfielder six weeks.

1959 - The San Francisco Giants' Mike McCormick tossed a 3-0, five-inning no-hitter against the Philadelphia Phillies. Richie Ashburn singled in the top of the sixth for the Phillies, but the hit didn't count because the game was stopped by rain.

2005 - Hee-Seop Choi hit three homers in his first three at-bats, including a go-ahead solo shot in the sixth, to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers past Minnesota 4-3.

2006 - Jason Grimsley was suspended 50 games by Major League Baseball, less than a week after federal agents raided his home during an investigation into performance-enhancing drugs.

2006 - Chicago's Jose Contreras won his 15th straight start and struck out a career-high 11 batters to help the White Sox defeat Texas 8-3.

2007 - Justin Verlander mixed 99 mph heat with crazy curveballs to pitch a no-hitter in the Detroit Tigers' 4-0 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. Verlander struck out a career-high 12, walked four and benefited from several stellar defensive plays.

Today's birthdays: Kyle McClellan 24; Hideki Matsui 34.

Hot Lines: Thursday's best MLB bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Arizona at New York Mets (-152, 7)

This road trip is starting to wear on the Diamondbacks. Today will be their 10th consecutive game away from home on a trip that has taken them to Milwaukee, Pittsburgh and now Queens. That's not a great situation for a team that clearly struggles on the road. This is a club that is in first place in the NL West, but on the flipside, also has a miserable 14-19 record away from Chase Field.

Part of the problem has been hitting - the D-Backs' overall .251 batting average dips to .218 on the road. But they probably won't get much help from their starting pitcher today if Dan Haren's trend of poor play on the road continues. Haren has a personal 0-3 record on the road and his ERA is 1 1/2 runs higher in away games.

And if Arizona is worn down after nine straight road games, last night's extra-innings loss probably didn't help much. Brandon Webb was chased early and the Diamondbacks had to use five relievers over 7 1/3 innings.

        Pick: Mets

Chicago White Sox at Detroit (-115, 10)

Neither Mark Buehrle nor Kenny Rogers have impressive ERAs this year, but those ugly numbers largely relate to slow starts to their seasons. Recently, however, both starters have gotten back on track. Buehrle pitched an eight-inning, one-earned run gem against Minnesota in his last start and the Gambler gave up a single earned run over seven innings in his latest outing.

There is a slight trend to the over at Comerica Park this season, but with a 10-run total on this game combined with two better-than-their-stats starting pitchers, this one has a good chance to play under. Even though both teams have been hot at the plate, this series hasn't produced a ton of offense.

        Pick: Under

Boston Celtics at Los Angeles Lakers [ABC | 9 PM ET]

Celtics: Two of Boston's "Big Three" struggled mightily in Game 3 with their shooting, as Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett combined to make just 8-of-35 shots from the field (23 percent). However, Ray Allen kept the Celtics in the game with a team-high 25 points, including five 3-pointers. Allen's defense on LA's Kobe Bryant has also been impressive despite the fact that he went off for a series-high 36 points. "He knows in order for us to win we have to play defense, and he’s drawn the challenge of guarding Kobe," Pierce said of Allen. "Regardless of what he’s done on the offensive end, he’s come to play this year defensively.”

Celtics are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 road games.
The UNDER is 6-0 in Boston's last 6 road games.

Key Injuries - G Rajon Rondo (10.6 ppg; sprained ankle) is probable.

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 92

Lakers (-7.5, O/U 191): LA has Bryant and Sasha Vujacic to thank for their performances in Game 3, leading the Lakers to an 87-81 victory. Vujacic has been Bryant's backup at shooting guard for most of the season but has played alongside him more and more late in games, with Bryant shifting to small forward. This has enabled Bryant to drive to the basket more and kick the ball out to an open teammate on the perimeter in Vujacic, who scored a career playoff-high 20 points. “All the work that Sasha puts into his game - I’ve been here for three years and I’ve been watching him practice and coming here at night at shooting - that gives you the confidence," LA's Vladimir Radmanovic said.

Lakers are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 home games.
The UNDER is 7-1 in LA's last 8 games overall.

                  Key Injuries - NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 99

Atlanta Braves at Chicago Cubs [WGN | 2:20 PM ET]

Braves: Tim Hudson has been the Braves ace this season but he's 0-1 in his last three starts with two no decisions. The Braves lost all three of those games but one bright note is Hudson didn't pitch all that bad. In his 21.2 innings pitched over that three game span, Hudson only allowed seven runs. However, walks were a problem in those games, as Hudson gave out eight free passes. Hudson is 2-0 in his career against the Cubs and his last four starts have gone UNDER the total.

Key Injuries - RP Rafael Soriano (3 saves; elbow) is questionable.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Cubs (-140): Carlos Zambrano will be taking the hill, looking to rebound from his worst performance of the season. In 6.2 innings pitched against he Dodgers, Zambrano allowed 13 hits and seven runs, leading to just his second loss of the season. Zambrano has been unbeatable at home this year, going 4-0 but he's just 2-2 over his career against the Braves with an ERA of 4.88. Five of the last six games Zambrano has started have gone OVER the total.

Key Injuries - OF Alfonso Soriano (.283; broken hand) is out at least 6 weeks.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Baltimore Orioles at Boston Red Sox [6:05 PM ET]

Orioles: There may not be a bigger hard-luck pitcher in baseball this season than Jeremy Guthrie. For whatever reason, the Orioles refuse to give him any run support. In 14 starts, Guthrie has allowed three runs or less 10 times. However, Baltimore is just 5-5 in those games, while Guthrie is 3-4 personally. Guthrie pitched well when he faced the Red Sox on June 2, getting a no decision after allowing only two runs over 6.2 innings of work. Guthrie is just 2-3 on the road this year but he has a solid 3.18 ERA.

                    Key Injuries - NONE

Red Sox (-160, O/U 9.5): Jon Lester stumbled in the two games following his no-hitter but he rebounded with a strong outing against the Rays his last time out. In that game Lester allowed just one run over 6.1 innings to the powerful Rays offense. Lester is perfect against the Orioles in his brief career, going 3-0 with a 3.41 ERA in five starts. Lester has been tough at Fenway Park (3-1) and three of his last four home starts have come in UNDER the total.

Phillies (-115, O/U 10): Veteran Jamie Moyer has been on a roll lately, going 4-0-1 in his last five starts. Overall, the Phillies have won five consecutive games with Moyer on the mound. Moyer has been the beneficiary of tremendous run support. In his last five outings, the Phillies offense has provided a whopping 53 runs for Moyer. The lefty has been strong on the road, going 3-1 with a 3.41 ERA. Expect to see a lot of runs tonight, as six of Moyer's last seven starts have gone OVER the total. He has never lost to the Marlins, going 8-0 with a 3.51 ERA.

                    Key Injuries - NONE

After five average performances, Olsen pitched well his last time out against the Reds, allowing no runs in six innings of work. Olsen has been battered in his career by the Phillies, going 3-4 with a lofty 6.00 ERA in six starts. The OVER cashed the last five times Olsen has taken the hill.

New York Yankees Oakland A's [YES | 10:05 PM ET]

Yankees (-115, O/U 8.5): Andy Pettitte can use a good outing after terrible starts against the Twins and Royals. In those two games, Pettitte allowed 20 hits and 15 runs in just 13.2 innings pitched. Amazingly, thanks to great run support, Pettitte didn't get a loss either time. The veteran takes to the road, where he's been very effective in 2008. Pettitte is 4-2 with a 3.95 ERA in seven road starts this year. Five of the last six games Pettitte has started have gone OVER the total.

                    Key Injuries - NONE

Blanton has lost his last two starts, giving up 17 hits and nine runs over 13 innings of work. Blanton has been dismal at home, going just 1-6 in 10 starts. Things may not get better for him tonight. The Yankees eat up Blanton. In three career starts, he's 0-2 with a 9.39 ERA against the Bombers. Three of Blanton's last four starts have gone OVER the total.
