    Six-pack for Wednesday

-- Mets look like a dead team; they led slumping Arizona 5-1, but gave up last eight runs of game, last four of which came after a rain delay in 7th inning. Tough times in Flushing.

-- All five teams in AL East are over .500; only one of five in the NL West (Diamondbacks) has won more than it has lost.

-- Detroit's win over White Sox was just their 8th in 27 tries against divisional rivals. Tigers sent to Willis to Class A, in an attempt to shake him out of his doldrums.

-- Braves are now a hideous 7-22 on the road, 3-17 in games decided by a single run.

-- Red Sox are just 14-13 against their divisional rivals.

-- Kazmir vs Lackey is marquee matchup Wednesday, but the Halos are 12-2 this season vs southpaw starters.

Wednesday's List of 13: Runnin' the bases in the AL..........

This week, we're choosing the best position player for each team over the last 45 years or so, since the early 60's..................

Orioles-- Cal Ripken was so popular in Maryland, kids in Little League weren't allowed to wear #8, since there were arguments about who would get to wear it. Ripken hit 431 homers, was on Orioles' last World Championship team.

Red Sox-- Manny Ramirez has hit 268 homers for Boston, after playing 7+ productive years in Cleveland, but Jim Rice played his whole career for Boston, with a .298 career BA. The website baseball-reference.com lists career parallels for stats, and three guys Rice parallels with are Snider-Cepeda-Williams, all in HOF

White Sox-- I'm not sure he owns a glove any more, but Frank Thomas can really hit; he has a .302 career BA, a .420 OB% and 520 homers. He's knocked in 100+ runs 11 times, including 143 RBI in 2000 and eight years in row of 100+ RBI from 1991-98.

Indians-- Manny Ramirez also hit 236 homers for the Tribe, and helped Indians get within one win of their first world title since 1948. Media types can mock Manny all they want, but all he's done in his career is produce runs and help win games. Easily, Manny could be on this list for two different teams.

Detroit-- Al Kaline led league in hitting when he was 20, then knocked in 128 runs the next year; he didn't sustain that level of greatness, but did wind up with 399 career HRs and lifetime batting average of .297, playing in park made for lefties.

Kansas City-- George Brett had 3,154 hits, a .305 career BA and 665 doubles; he led Royals into playoffs seven times in a 10-yr span from 1976-85. His brother Ken pitched in World Series as a 17-year old with Boston in '67.

LA Angels-- You look thru the Angels' history-- they've had a lot of really good players, but none for very long. Carew-Lynn Jackson-Guerrero-Robinson. Longevity has to play into it, so out guy for the Angels in Garret Anderson (252 homers, .285 career BA in 15 years for the Halos).

Minnesota-- Kirby Puckett was a .318 career hitter, with 110+ RBI in three of his 12 seasons; he died far too young, but was best player for a Twins franchise that has had some really fine hitters (Carew-Oliva-Killebrew-Hrbek).

Bronx-- Mickey Mantle hit .298 with 536 HRs and an OB% of .421; no matter how many players they buy now, going to be a tough thing to win as much as Mantle's Bronx teams did. One of the greatest switch-hitters of all-time.

Oakland-- Rickey Henderson is the greatest leadoff hitter ever and it isn't even close; he stole 1,406 bases with a .401 OB% in his 25-year career. Rickey also hit 297 HRs, scored 2,295 runs- scoring runs is the name of the game. First ballot Hall of Famer.

Seattle-- Ken Griffey Jr hit 209 HRs in his last four years with Mariners, then hit 40 more his first year with Reds, before lot of injuries ended his bid to break Hank Aaron's HR record. From 1996-2000, Junior knocked in 685 runs, an awful lot.

Tampa Bay-- Carl Crawford is the brightest Ray of them all, not like he had lot of competition, though. Will be interesting when he can become free agent if Rays sign him- they have talented young guys on way up through farm. Crawford could go home and play for his hometown Astros, if he wanted to.

Texas-- Can a guy be best player in team history if he only was on the team for three years? Alex Rodriguez never led Rangers to playoffs, but he did hit 156 homers and knock in 395 runs in his brief and lucrative stay in Arlington.

Toronto-- Carlos Delgado hit 336 homers for Toronto, starting out as a catcher and winding up as a DH/1B. In 2000, he hit 57 doubles, with 123 walks and 41 homers, 137 RBI. Joe Carter hit the most famous HR in Jays' history, but Delgado is best Jay.

          SCOREBOARD

          Wednesday, June 11
Arizona at N.Y. Mets (7:10 p.m. EDT). Brandon Webb (11-2, 2.58 ERA) goes for his major league-leading 12th win against the Mets, losers of five straight.

          STARS

          Tuesday

          - C.C. Sabathia, Indians, pitched a five-hitter for his seventh career shutout as Cleveland defeated Minnesota 1-0.

          - Dustin McGowan, Blue Jays, threw his third career complete game, allowing five hits in Toronto's 3-1 win over Seattle.

          - Ryan Ludwick, Cardinals, homered and drove in four runs to lead St. Louis to a 7-2 win over Cincinnati.

          - Aubrey Huff, Orioles, matched his career high with four hits, including a tying two-run single, and Baltimore came from behind twice to beat Boston 10-6.

          - Lance Berkman, Astros, hit his 19th homer and drove in five runs to lift the Astros to a 6-1 win over the Brewers.

          PAYBACK

Toronto's Brad Wilkerson hit a tiebreaking homer in the fifth against Seattle, the team that cut him earlier this season. Wilkerson signed a one-year, $3-million free-agent deal with the Mariners in January, but was designated for assignment April 30 after hitting just .232 in 19 games. He is batting .243 with three homers and 19 RBIs since joining Toronto May 9.

          OOPS

Royals first baseman Mark Teahen's error in the eighth opened the door for the Rangers to score four runs off three Kansas City relievers with two outs to tie the score 5-all. Teahen dropped shortstop Mike Aviles' throw, which would have ended the inning. The Rangers went on to win 6-5.

          UP AND DOWN

Albert Pujols and Rick Ankiel gave the Cardinals their first set of back-to-back home runs this season before Pujols was helped off the field in the top of the seventh inning with a strained left calf he suffered while running out a groundball. St. Louis beat Cincinnati 7-2.

          SURGERY

John Smoltz had the labrum in his right shoulder repaired on Tuesday, and the Atlanta Braves said it will be months before the pitcher knows if his career can resume. Dr. James Andrews and an associate performed the arthroscopic procedure in Birmingham, Ala. Smoltz said last week he expected to get a definitive word on his comeback hopes immediately after the operation, but no such announcement was made public. Braves spokesman Brad Hainje said it will be months before it will be known if Smoltz can pitch again.

          AILING ACE

Tom Glavine was forced to leave the Braves 10-5 loss to the Cubs after three innings with an elbow strain that will send him to the DL. Glavine said the elbow has been bothering him for nearly a month and has gotten progressively worse. He will return to Atlanta and have an MRI.

          C.C. SHUTOUT

C.C. Sabathia pitched a five-hitter for his seventh career shutout as Cleveland defeated Minnesota, 1-0, extending the Twins' season-high losing streak to six games Tuesday night.

          SNAPPED

The Cubs' Ted Lilly worked 6 2-3 innings to get his first win since May 19. He allowed four hits and the three runs with three walks and eight strikeouts. Chicago beat Atlanta 10-5. ... Miguel Cabrera's go-ahead two-run single in the fifth inning helped the Detroit Tigers snap the White Sox's seven-game winning streak.

          ODD COUPLE

The matchup between Greg Maddux and Dodgers rookie Clayton Kershaw was the largest gap in career wins between two starters since Aug. 25, 1965, when San Francisco's Warren Spahn (361 wins) faced the Mets' Darrell Sutherland (one). Maddux, who was denied his 351st victory, outpitched the rookie. Maddux, 42, was winning 18 games in his second full season in the majors when Kershaw, 20, was born in 1988.

          SPEAKING

"It took one second. He asked me to tell him the truth and I told him the truth. If he calls me tomorrow, I'll tell him I'll be ready. I've been feeling really good.'' - Yankees closer Mariano Rivera, who got a rare call from manager Joe Girardi to see if he was ready to pitch in New York's 3-1 win over Oakland.

          SEASONS

          June 11

1904 - Bob Wicker of the Chicago Cubs pitched 9 1-3 hitless innings before Sam Mertes of the New York Giants singled. Wicker won a 1-0, 12-inning one-hitter.

1938 - Johnny Vander Meer hurled the first of two consecutive no-hitters as the Cincinnati Reds beat the Boston Braves 3-0.

1967 - The Chicago Cubs hit seven homers and the New York Mets four in the second game of a doubleheader, tying the major league record set by the New York Yankees (6) and Detroit Tigers (5) in 1950. Adolfo Phillips hit four home runs in the doubleheader for Chicago.

1981 - Following Seattle's 8-2 win over Baltimore, major league players went on strike.

1985 - Von Hayes became the first player in major league history to hit two home runs in the first inning. Hayes connected twice in a nine-run first, powering the Philadelphia Phillies to a 26-7 victory over the New York Mets.

1990 - Nolan Ryan pitched the sixth no-hitter of his career, extending his major league record, as the Texas Rangers beat the Oakland Athletics 5-0. Ryan was the first to pitch no-hitters for three teams and, at 43, the oldest to throw one.

1995 - Mark McGwire hit three home runs in consecutive at-bats and tied the major league record of five homers in consecutive games, leading the Oakland Athletics over the Boston Red Sox 8-1.

1995 - Lee Smith set a major league record with a save in his 16th consecutive appearance, pitching a scoreless ninth inning to preserve the California Angels' 5-4 victory over Baltimore. Smith broke the mark of 15 straight set by Doug Jones in 1988.

1997 - Roger Clemens lost for the first time after 11 straight wins to open the season as the Seattle Mariners topped the Toronto Blue Jays 5-1.

2002 - Jared Sandberg became the 16th AL player to homer twice in an inning, and the third this season, as Tampa Bay beat Los Angeles 11-2.

2003 - Houston's Roy Oswalt, Pete Munro, Kirk Saarloos, Brad Lidge, Octavio Dotel and Billy Wagner combined for the first no-hitter against the New York Yankees in 45 years, winning 8-0. The sextet set a record for the highest number of pitchers to throw a no-hitter in major league history - four accomplished the feat twice.

Today's birthdays: Jose Reyes 25; Odalis Perez 32.

                Tips and Trends
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago White Sox at Detroit Tigers [7:05 PM ET]

White Sox: Chicago has won five of the last six times Javier Vazquez has gone to the mound with him earning the victory three times during that stretch. Vazquez is coming off a one of his rougher outings at home against Minnesota but still walked away with a win despite giving up four runs and nine hits - including two homers - in 5.1 innings of work. He had given up just two earned runs in three of his previous four starts and pitched well against the Tigers in his last outing against them, throwing seven scoreless innings with no walks and nine strikeouts.

White Sox are 19-8 in their last 27 games overall.
White Sox are 23-10 in the last 33 meetings at Detroit.

                Key Injuries - NONE

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Tigers (-120, O/U 9): Detroit ace Justin Verlander continues to struggle despite pitching respectable in his last three starts. The Tigers have scored a total of three runs for him in those outings, losing all three times. Verlander went seven innings in each of those starts, giving up a combined eight runs and 18 hits. While both of his wins have come at home this season, he has struggled mightily against the White Sox during his career, going 1-6 with a 6.14 ERA.

                Key Injuries - NONE

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Arizona Diamondbacks at New York Mets [7:10 PM ET]

Diamondbacks (-140, O/U 8): Arizona's Brandon Webb has an MLB-best 11 wins so far this season, but he has not enjoyed much success against the Mets during his career. Webb is just 3-6 lifetime vs. New York with a 2.58 ERA, and both of his losses this season have come in two of his last three road starts. He faced the Mets at home back on May 3rd and gave up four runs and five hits in six innings of a 10-4 victory.

                Key Injuries - NONE

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Mets: New York's Mike Pelfrey has never beaten the Diamondbacks, going 0-2 against them in two starts with a 6.97 ERA. The Mets have also won just once with him on the mound in his last nine starts despite a few solid outings during that stretch. He allowed only one run in six innings last time out at San Diego on Thursday but walked away with a no-decision in a 2-1 loss. Pelfrey has pitched better at home this season, going 2-4 with a 3.43 ERA.

                Key Injuries - NONE

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Atlanta Braves at Chicago Cubs [ESPN | 8:05 PM ET]

Braves: Atlanta's Jair Jurrjens has been shaky in his last three starts and has been fortunate to see his team win two of them. Jurrjens has surrendered a combined 28 hits and 14 runs in just 15 innings of work during that stretch, getting bailed out by 21 runs of support. He has also been much less effective on the road, going 1-3 in six starts with a 4.84 ERA.

Braves are 19-8 in the last 27 meetings at Chicago.
The UNDER is 24-7-1 in Atlanta's last 32 road games.

Key Injuries - 3B Chipper Jones (.420; quad) is doubtful.
RP Rafael Soriano (3 saves; elbow) is questionable.

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Cubs (-150): Chicago's Ryan Dempster has been perfect at Wrigley Field so far this season, going 7-0 with a 3.10 ERA. Dempster is coming off his two shortest outings of the season in back-to-back starts, which could be a bit of a concern considering he is still making his transition from the bullpen a year ago. He has not pitched a full six innings in either of his last two outings and is a dismal 1-10 lifetime vs. Atlanta with a 5.65 ERA.

Cubs are 12-3 in their last 15 games overall.

                Key Injuries - NONE

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

New York Yankees at Oakland A's [YES | 10:05 PM ET]

Yankees: New York's Darrell Rasner will try to end a personal three-game and win for the first time in three road starts. Rasner's slide started with a 6-1 loss at Baltimore on May 26th even though he allowed just one run in six innings. In his defense, the Yankees have scored just three runs combined in his starts during that stretch. Rasner pitched a season-high eight innings last time out against Kansas City at home on Friday, giving up two runs and nine hits with no walks and four strikeouts in a 2-1 loss.

                Key Injuries - NONE

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

A's (-130, O/U 8): Oakland's Justin Duchscherer has enjoyed pitching a home this season, going a perfect 4-0 there with a stellar 1.69 ERA. In fact, Duchscherer has allowed just four runs combined over his last three starts overall in a total of 20.2 innings, walking six and striking out 12. He has never started against the Yankees during his career but is 0-1 lifetime in seven appearances vs. New York with a 6.75 ERA.

                Key Injuries - NONE

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Hot lines: Wednesday's best MLB bets

Chicago White Sox at Detroit (-115, 9)

Hard to pass up the White Sox as a dog these days after Ozzie flipped his lid and kicked off a seven-game winning streak. They lost last night to the Tigers when Jose Contreras turned out his worst start of the season, allowing six runs and 13 hits through six innings.

Today Chicago looks to get back on track with Javier Vazquez on the hill and should be able to give him ample support. The White Sox are hitting .323 over the last 10 games and put up at least seven runs in five of those games.

The Tigers answer with Justin Verlander who, despite some solid outings, has just one win in his last eight tries.

                      Pick: White Sox

                      L.A. Dodgers at San Diego (-105, 7)

These PETCO totals are really getting ridiculous. It’s not hard to see that the Padres can’t hit and play in the most pitcher-friendly park in the bigs, but it’s hard not to look at the over even though today’s starters, Randy Wolf and Chad Billingsley, are rolling.

Los Angeles has produced 18 runs over its last four games, which is impressive considering the club has struggled to push runs across all season. The Dodgers smacked out 13 hits in a 7-2 win over the Padres yesterday.

                      Pick: Over

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Arizona Diamondbacks at New York Mets [7:10 PM ET]

Diamondbacks (-140, O/U 8): Arizona's Brandon Webb has an MLB-best 11 wins so far this season, but he has not enjoyed much success against the Mets during his career. Webb is just 3-6 lifetime vs. New York with a 2.58 ERA, and both of his losses this season have come in two of his last three road starts. He faced the Mets at home back on May 3rd and gave up four runs and five hits in six innings of a 10-4 victory.

RP Rafael Soriano (3 saves; elbow) is questionable.

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Cubs (-150, O/U 10): Chicago's Ryan Dempster has been perfect at Wrigley Field so far this season, going 7-0 with a 3.10 ERA.
