    Tuesday's Six-Pack

-- White Sox are 7-0 since Ozzie Guillen's tirade last week, are now 6.5 games ahead in AL Central.

-- Dontrelle Willis faced 12 batters Monday, gave up eight runs as Detroit's season from hell continued with an 8-2 loss.

-- Cliff Lee beat the Tigers; Indians are now 10-2 in his starts, winning the last four in a row.

-- Molinas are only family in baseball history with three kids in major leagues, where all three won World Series rings.

-- Rays hit three consecutive homers (Longoria, Aybar and Navarro) for the first time in franchise history. Longoria hit two homers and a double in his return to California.

-- Ken Griffey hit his 600th homer in first inning Monday, as Volquez won again for Reds. Junior seems like a likeable guy, from what you can tell watching the Reds' games on the Extra Innings package.

Tuesday's List of 13: Runnin' the bases in the NL..........

This week, we're looking at the best position players for each team in major leagues. Tomorrow, the National League.........

Diamondbacks— Not only did Luis Gonzalez get the biggest hit in Diamondback history, he hit 224 homers while playing for the Snakes, including an unlikely 57 in one season.

Braves— Chipper Jones is hitting .420 this season, and has a .310 career average; how many Hall of Famers played for only one manager in their whole career? Chipper has.

Cubs— Ernie Banks (.274 career average, 512 homers) is more famous, but Billy Williams (.290, 426 HRs) was also damn good hitter. Given that Banks played half his career at shortstop, we'll give him nod, but in no way does that diminish Williams.

Reds— Pete Rose not being in the Hall of Fame is ridiculous, and we'll leave it at that. He is the best Red ever, but Cincinnati also has one of the best players not in the Hall- Vada Pinson; in 18 seasons, he hit 256 HRs, had 305 steals, a .286 career BA. (I think Jim Rice is the best player not in the HOF.)

Rockies— Todd Helton has a .330 career BA, .430 OB%, and 309 HRs; he benefitted from pre-humidor Denver, but he is still an excellent hitter. Helton was also the QB at Tennessee before someone named Peyton Manning took the reins in Knoxville.

Marlins— They change players so often, hard to establish the one guy who is franchise-best. Miguel Cabrera had 138 HRs in five years, has a .310 career BA, and won a World Series ring. Gary Sheffield or Derrek Lee could also have been the choice.

Astros— Craig Biggio moved from catcher to second base and had 3,060 hits, 260 of which were home runs. Jeff Bagwell also got consideration, but given how long he wore his sleeves at the end of his career, I'm guessing his arms shrunk a little bit.

Dodgers— Mike Piazza would be our guy had he played little longer in Dodger Blue; Steve Garvey was also a candidate, but we chose Davey Lopes, who had 418 steals in 10 years for LA, after he finally got to major leagues at age of 27. Dodgers made playoffs four times with Lopes on squad (no Wild Card then).

Brewers— Molitor/Yount, Yount/Molitor.......Robin Yount hit 250 homers, stole 270 bases, had .285 career average; plus, he played his whole career for Brewers, and saved Juan Nieves' no-hitter with a headlong diving catch in rightcenter field.

Metropolitans— Piazza was more popular than Strawberry, but Darryl hit 280 homers before age 30, only 55 after; a year after he left the Mets, his career went in ashcan. Both guys played eight seasons for the Mets. Since I always criticize Piazza for not charging Clemens after he threw the broken bat at him in the World Series, I'll say Strawberry was Mets' best player.

Phillies— Michael Jack Schmidt hit 538 career homers; this is the easiest call on the list, though Chase Utley might make it a little interesting down the road. Schmidt hit .206, .196 his first two years in major leagues-- go figure.

Pirates— Willie Stargell hit 475 homers and played on the last two Pirate world title teams, in '71 and '79. He was a great leader on some terrific Pittsburgh teams.

Cardinals— Lou Brock was acquired from Cubs for a pitcher named Ernie Broglio on June 15, 1964 (really a six-player deal), and Cardinals played in World Series in three of the next five seasons. Brock stole 888 bases for the Redbirds.

Padres— Damn, Dave Winfield isn't the best Padre, nor Nate Colbert. Tony Gwynn's career batting average is .338; he had 19 consecutive seasons batting over .300, and also was one of the pioneers, as far as film study and preparation for hitters.

Giants— Willie Mays hit 660 home runs, didn't take steroids, and played in era where Jenkins-Carlton-Seaver-Koufax were sprinkled across the NL. Barry Bonds had some amazing years numerically, but he is a creep and probably cheated.

Nationals— If you count the Montreal years, Andre Dawson is our guy, with Tim Raines right behind. If not, then it isn't a plentiful lot to choose from; we'll go with Ryan Zimmerman.

            Tuesday, June 10

            NBA Games
Only three NBA teams have been down 2-0 in Finals and won the championship, so tall order for Lakers, outscored by 19 pts in third quarter in first two games of series. Series resumes at the Staples Center Tuesday night. All I know is Lakers better contain Rondo off the dribble more, and Leon Powe can't score 21 points in 15 minutes again. Adjustments need to be made.

Kobe Bryant is 35-95 (36.8%) in four games against Boston so far this season; obviously, they've done excellent job, before Lakers had Gasol, and now in Finals, with Gasol.

                Boston at L.A. Lakers (-9 1/2, 195 1/2)

Oddsmakers had Los Angeles favored in Boston for Game 2, only to see the Lakers trail by 24 before making a late run with about eight minutes left in the fourth to make the final score respectable.

Now, despite Boston's dominance for the first part of the series, Los Angeles is set as a big favorite again for Game 3. This time the Lakers have home court on their side, but you have to wonder how much difference that will make if Boston keeps getting great support for its Big Three.

Rajon Rondo and Leon Powe stepped up on Sunday and the Lakers still couldn't crack the Celtics' secret on defense. L.A. will get a little more love from the officials now that the series has shifted sites after the Lakers shot just 10 free throws compared to the 38 attempts Boston had in Game 3.

That won't make much difference if the Lakers don't start defending better in their end and figure out something to get Kobe Bryant more room at the other end of the floor. Boston is swarming Kobe as soon as he touches the ball to keep him confined to the outside, so L.A.'s frontcourt needs to set better screens for him to see if he can get to the rim and the free throw line.

Of course, that's easier said than done against Boston's defense. The Celtics are riding a ton of momentum and have a solid defensive game plan in place to deal with Los Angeles' big scorers. Unless the Zen Master can scheme up something to drastically change the series now that the Lakers are back on home turf, they could be in serious trouble.

                Pick: Celtics

Boston Celtics at Los Angeles Lakers [ABC | 9 PM ET]

Celtics: Boston has proven to have the superior frontcourt so far in this series, and one of the team's major advantages inside is depth. Leon Powe stepped up big-time in Game 2, scoring 21 points in less than 15 minutes of action. The Lakers are not a physical team and have been outrebounded by a margin of 14 boards through the first two games. Still, Kevin Garnett needs to be more physical for the Celtics and not rely mostly on perimeter shots. Kendrick Perkins has also not been much of a factor in either of the first two games due to foul trouble and his ankle injury suffered in Game 1. Garnett and Perkins need to step up more on the road because it will be harder for role players like Powe to be counted on without the support of the home crowd.

Celtics are 2-7 ATS in their last 9 road games.
Celtics are 11-5 ATS in their last 16 Tuesday games.

Key Injuries - G Tony Allen (6.6 ppg; Achilles') is doubtful.
G Sam Cassell (11.2 ppg; sprained wrist) is day-to-day.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Lakers (-9.5, O/U 195.5): Everybody wants to know whether or not LA's monster comeback in the fourth quarter of Game 2 on Sunday will carry over to Game 3 back at home. While that remains to be seen, the Lakers did learn that they must hit their 3-point shots and be aggressive against the Celtics or they will not beat them. They tied an NBA Finals record in the final quarter by connecting on seven 3-pointers but went to the free-throw line just 10 times compared to 38 for Boston. Insiders believe the officiating should work in their favor back at home, but only if star Kobe Bryant takes the ball to the basket a lot more often.

Lakers are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 home games.
Lakers are 11-3 ATS in their last 14 Tuesday games.
The OVER is 6-2 in LA's last 8 games vs. Atlantic Division.

                    Key Injuries - NONE

                    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Chicago White Sox at Detroit Tigers [7:05 PM ET]

White Sox: Jose Contreras is on fire, winning four of his last six starts, with two no decisions sprinkled in there as well. Amazingly, Contreras has only allowed one run in five of his last six starts and just two runs in the other outing. The under has cashed in seven of the last eight times Contreras has taken the rubber. He's been tough on the road, going 3-1 with a 2.63 ERA in six starts away from home.

White Sox are 23-9 in the last 32 meetings at Detroit.

                              Key Injuries - NONE

                              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Tigers (-110, O/U 9.5): Nate Robertson hasn't been great in his last three starts but thanks to strong run support, he's 2-1 over that span. Robertson has given up 12 runs in those three games but the Tigers were able to offset that by scoring 28 runs of their own. Being at home hasn't been much help to Robertson this year.
