Pick 'n' Roll: Sunday's best NBA bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        L.A. Lakers at Boston (+1, 190 1/2)

During a press conference leading up to Game 2, Kobe Bryant was asked if he agreed with coach Phil Jackson after the bench boss told the media that Bryant was essentially "unstoppable." Bryant, shifted uncomfortably, chewed the question over for a moment, then looked up and said "Yep."

That confidence is just what the Lakers need after Boston pulled off an emotional win in Game 1, while Bryant struggled to find his range. L.A.'s leader was 9-of-26 from the floor to finish with 24 points, while Paul Pierce provided the spark for Boston and Kevin Garnett chipped in 24 points and 13 rebounds.

Expect a more assertive game from Bryant. At times he fell into the habit of settling for fadeaways as Boston tried to clog up the paint, but he'll attack the rack tonight.

        Pick: Lakers

Hot Lines: Sunday's best MLB bets
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Chicago Cubs at L.A. Dodgers (-125, 8 1/2)

The Chicago Cubs haven't lost three games in a row since the final week of the 2007 regular season.

Despite owning the NL's best record, the Cubs look to avoid that from happening as they conclude a four-game road series with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday night.

On day after falling 3-0 at the hands of Los Angeles' starter Hiroki Kuroda, Chicago (39-24) was done in by a five-run Dodger seventh inning in falling 7-3 Saturday - its third loss in four contests since winning a season-high nine in a row. The Cubs, who are 13-16 on the road, haven't lost three straight since being swept at Florida from Sept. 25-27.

"We're playing pretty good, but we have to pick it up on the road," Chicago's Aramis Ramirez told the team's official Web site. "We'll be all right."

                    Pick: Cubs

The Rays hope their run of effective pitching continues behind Matt Garza, who will try to lead them to their first three-game sweep of the Rangers at Texas for the first time since Aug. 30-Sept. 1, 2002.

First, though, Garza (4-2, 4.21 ERA) must bounce back after losing for the first time in three starts on Tuesday. He yielded seven runs and six hits over 5 1/3 innings in a 7-4 defeat at Boston.

The right-hander is hoping for better luck against Texas. Garza, who is 1-2 with a 6.18 ERA in five road starts, has conceded just four runs and 10 hits over 14 1/3 innings while winning his two starts versus the Rangers - both at home.

                    Pick: Under

Ken Griffey Jr. went 1-for-3 with two walks in Cincinnati's 8-7 loss to Florida. He remained stuck on 599 home runs for one more night. Junior helped draw Dolphin Stadium's third largest crowd this season and the 25,289 fans all were armed with giveaway cowbells. He hasn't hit a home run since May 31.

                      FEELING CHIPPER

Chipper Jones hit a home run in the Braves' 6-2 loss to the Phillies. Jones was 1-for-3 and is hitting .420 with 15 homers. He has the highest batting average through June 7 since Paul O'Neill's .431 mark on June 7, 1994, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. "He's something," said Braves manager Bobby Cox of Jones. "We need somebody else to go with him here."

                      AILING

Tigers pitcher Jeremy Bonderman likely will miss the rest of the season after undergoing medical procedures related to a blood clot. The condition was discovered Friday in a vein in Bonderman's pitching shoulder. He underwent a procedure to break up the clot that night before having an angioplasty Saturday morning at the Detroit Medical Center. The blood clot was caused by thoracic outlet compression syndrome.
                      - Indians starter Jake Westbrook will have surgery on his right elbow, sidelining him for the rest of the season.
                      - Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright left in the sixth inning of a win over Houston because of a sprained right middle finger.

                      MAKING HISTORY

The Padres beat the Mets 2-1 in 10 innings for San Diego's fourth straight 2-1 victory. It marked the first time in major league history that a team had won four consecutive games by a 2-1 score, according to Elias Sports Bureau. In the same game, the Mets' Oliver Perez hit two batters and reliever Joe Smith hit another. The three hit batters in the inning tied a major league record.

                      MAN OH MANNY

Manny Ramirez hit his 504th career homer in Boston's 11-3 win over Seattle. Ramirez tied Eddie Murray for 23rd on the career list with a two-run drive over the Green Monster seats.

                      MAKE MINE A DOUBLE

Carlos Gonzalez, Oakland's rookie outfielder who was called up on May 30, hit two doubles in the Athletics' 5-3 loss to the Angels. He became the first major leaguer since Johnny Mize in 1936 to begin his major league career with each of his first seven hits going for extra bases.

                      CLOSE CALLS

The Angels beat the Athletics 5-3 for their seventh straight win. Of those seven victories, four have been by one run. The other three were by two-run margins. Closer Francisco Rodriguez has saves in five straight games, and leads the majors with 26 in 27 chances.

                      SIXTH SENSE

Johnny Damon of the Yankees went 6-for-6 with a game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth inning, rallying the New York Yankees to a wild 12-11 victory over the Kansas City Royals. Damon set a career high and equaled a Yankees record now accomplished three times. Myril Hoag also went 6-for-6 on June 6, 1934, at Boston, and Gerald Williams got six hits in a 15-inning game May 1, 1996, at Baltimore. Omar Vizquel is the only player besides Damon to get six hits in a game at Yankee Stadium, accomplishing the feat for Cleveland on Aug. 31, 2004.

                      STREAKING

With a first-inning single, Texas' Michael Young extended his hitting streak to 22 games, longest in the majors this season and three short of his career high.
                      - Milton Bradley of the Rangers hit a solo homer in the eighth off Tampa Bay's Trever Miller-his sixth in the last seven games.
                      - Boston?s Kevin Youkilis dropped a throw in the ninth, ending his major league-record 238-game errorless streak at first. He started the game against Seattle at third, but moved over in the eighth.

                      SPEAKING

"I thought it was a lock."-Colorado Rockies starter Greg Reynolds, who picked Big Brown's name in a blind drawing for the Belmont Stakes, only to watch his sure thing fall flat and finish last. Reynolds got his first major league win, 7-2 over Milwaukee.

Los Angeles Lakers at Boston Celtics [ABC | 9 PM ET]

Lakers (-1, O/U 190.5):NBA MVP Kobe Bryant continued his struggles against the Boston defense in Game 1 of the NBA Finals, making just 9-of-26 shots from the field in scoring 24 points. Bryant has now made only 33 percent of his shots in three meetings with the Celtics (24-of-72). The Lakers also struggled as a team shooting from beyond the 3-point arc, hitting 3-of-14. Bryant's ability to drive to the hoop and draw double teams enables his teammates to get open for 3-point attempts, and he settled himself for perimeter shots too much. Insiders expect Bryant to be a lot more aggressive going to the basket in Game 2, especially with Boston's Kendrick Perkins suffering from an ankle injury. This should result in more open shots for teammates and free throws.

Lakers are 12-5-1 ATS in their last 18 games overall.
The UNDER is 7-2 in LA's last 9 road games.
The UNDER is 7-1 in LA's last 8 games as an underdog.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 96

Celtics: Boston leading scorer Paul Pierce feels blessed that he was able to return in the third quarter of Game 1 after suffering what looked to be a serious knee injury, which ended up being a turning point for his team. The Celtics rallied behind Pierce's departure when he had to be carried out of the game and then fed off the energy created by his return en route to the victory. ?The thing about it, a lot of it was going through my mind, and I was like, man, it can?t be over like this," Pierce said. "You know, I think God just sent this angel down and said, ?Hey, you?re going to be all right. You need to get back out there. Show them what you?ve got.??

Celtics are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games vs. Pacific Division.
Celtics are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 Sunday games.
Celtics are 13-5 ATS in their last 18 home games.

Key Injuries - F Paul Pierce (19.6 ppg; knee) is questionable.
G Tony Allen (6.6 ppg; Achilles') is doubtful.
C Kendrick Perkins (6.9 ppg; ankle) is a game-time decision.

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday

                          13) At 1:12 Sunday morning, Scott Hairston homered in bottom of 10th inning, making San Diego first team in history of major leagues to win four straight 2-1 games. Seriously.

                          12) Time for the Wilpon family to call a moving vans for Willie Randolph; only two runs Mets scored the last two nights came on sac flies. Their body language is horrendous- time to shake things up before Phillies are so far ahead of them, they can't be caught. Monday is a day off-- good time for a change.

                          11) I watch every Met game, and have no idea why this team is so..........listless I guess would be the right word. They're an old team, other than Reyes they don't have lot of speed, but for a ballclub with a $138M payroll, this is a putrid performance.

                          10) Do I think it is all Randolph's fault? Of course not, but is it ever totally the skipper's fault? Yet, his head is the one that will roll once things go sour, and these Mets are certainly curdling quickly. Losing three in a row to these Padres is inexcusable.

                          9) The front office isn't blameless here; they've totally screwed up the Ryan Church/concussion situation, leaving Mets a man short on the bench while Church obviously should be on the DL until his head clears up........giving Castillo a multi-year deal looks foolish, El Duque, Alou and Pedro are always hurt. This is in no way a championship roster, Willie or no Willie.

                          8) Phillies are now 6.5 games up on Mets; they win just about every time Kyle Kendrick pitches. Fun team to watch.

                          7) How many times in major league history has starting pitcher given up ten runs, yet his team won? Andy Pettitte had ugly pitching line, but his team still won, 12-11.

                          6) At one point in Seattle-Boston game, both sides has pitcher throwing knuckleballs; bad times for umpire Ed Hickox.

                          5) A's prospect Carlos Gonzalez is 7 for his first 30 in bigs, with no walks, six strikeouts and no singles; all seven of his hits so far have been doubles.

                          4) Its been a lousy year for the NL West, but the last couple nights, the NL West teams are 10-0 in their games.

                          3) Interesting contrast in coaching searches of Pistons, Bulls and Suns; Detroit's change seemed pre-meditated, Bulls don't seem to have any idea what they're doing, while Suns forced a highly successful coach out, then seemed uncertain as to who should take his place.

                          2) Gas update: Mobil station, the criminals at Wolf, Sand Creek roads in Colonie, were charging $4.22 a gallon Saturday night. Hess station about half mile away is charging $4.08. Someone has to tell me why would anyone patronize Mobil.........

                          1) If I owned Big Brown, I'd damn sure want to know why this horse wasn't given his monthly steroids dosage on May 15. If it is so legal to give the horse steroids, why did we stop?

TOTAL PLAYS OF THE DAY ON 13-3 RUN

Kansas City Royals at New York Yankees [YES | 1:05 PM ET]

Royals: Zack Greinke has stumbled in his last three outings after starting the season on fire. In his last three starts (0-2) Greinke has given up 17 runs in 19 innings pitched. Due to his poor performances of late, three of Greinke's last four starts have gone over the total. Greinke faced the Yankees earlier in the season and pitched a gem, shutting out the Bombers in eight innings on the mound.

Royals are 4-17 in their last 21 games overall.
Royals are 3-24 in the last 27 meetings at New York.

                            Key Injuries - NONE

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Yankees (-180, O/U 9): Joba Chamberlain's first start didn't go exactly how the Yankees had hoped. With a pitch count of 65, Chamberlain set himself up for a short outing by throwing 38 pitches in the first inning versus Toronto. Chamberlain lasted just 2.1 innings, walking four batters and allowing two runs. Chamberlain is hoping for a better performance today against the offensively inept Royals. As a relief pitcher Chamberlain never allowed a run in 3.1 innings of work against Kansas City.

Yankees are 8-2 in their last 10 home games.
The OVER is 6-2 in New York's last 8 home games.

                            Key Injuries - NONE

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 6

Seattle Mariners at Boston Red Sox [NESN | 1:35 PM ET]

Mariners: Jarrod Washburn has been a disaster this season and he's probably a poor outing away from heading back to the bullpen. After a brief stint in the pen, Washburn returned to the starting rotation but the results have been the same. After pitching well against the Yankees, Washburn gave up nine hits and four runs in 5.1 innings against the Angels. Washburn has been torched on the road this season, going 1-4 with a 6.82 ERA. Five of Washburn's last six starts have gone OVER the total.

Mariners are 8-23 in their last 31 road games.
The OVER is 10-4 in Seattle's last 14 games as an underdog.

                            Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

Red Sox (-125, O/U 9.5): Justin Masterson continues to be a revelation for Boston, going 2-0 with a 2.95 ERA in three starts this season. After allowing just one run in his first two starts, Masterson allowed a season high four runs in his most recent outing against Tampa, although he did get the win thanks to the Sox scoring seven runs. All of Masterson's starts have taken place at Fenway Park, with two of those going over the total.

Red Sox are 17-6 in the last 23 meetings at Boston.
Red Sox are 43-13 in their last 56 home games.

Key Injuries - OF Jacoby Ellsbury (.287; wrist) is questionable.

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 7

Milwaukee Brewers at Colorado Rockies [3:05 PM ET]

Brewers: You can pretty much set your watch to Jeff Suppan. He's been unhittable at home and awful on the road. Unfortunately for the Brewers, Suppan is on the road tonight, where he's 1-4 with a 6.27 ERA. Suppan has owned the Rockies over his career, going 5-1 with a 3.58 ERA in eight starts. Even though he has a high road ERA, Suppan's last three starts away from home have all gone UNDER the total.

Brewers are 4-14 in their last 18 road games.
The UNDER is 9-3 in Milwaukee's last 12 games overall.

                            Key Injuries - NONE

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Rockies (-120, O/U 10): Jeff Francis is having a tough season to date but he's coming off one of his best performances, shutting out the Dodgers in LA over seven innings. Francis was tough at Coors Field in 2007 but that hasn't been the case this season, where he's 1-3 with an ERA of 6.00. Somehow Francis is 2-2 in his career against the Brewers, despite sporting a ridiculous 8.71 ERA.

Rockies are 8-3 in Francis' last 11 Sunday starts.
Rockies are 23-9 in the last 32 meetings at Colorado.

                            Key Injuries - NONE

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Chicago Cubs at Los Angeles Dodgers [ESPN | 8:05 PM ET]

Cubs: When Jason Marquis takes the hill for the Cubs, they know they'll need to score some runs, and that's usually what happens. Marquis rarely goes past the fifth inning, which means the Cubs bullpen also needs to perform well today. In the last four games Chicago won with Marquis on the mound, the team has averaged eight runs. Marquis has performed well against the Dodgers in his career, going 2-1 with a stellar ERA of 2.25.

                              Sunday's Six-Pack

Notes on college baseball, as they whittle down from 16 to the eight teams for the College World Series

-- Guy on TV was saying that college games last lot longer than pro games because most pitches are called from dugout.

-- Its weird to watch a sport that Rice University is good in.

-- Big West isn't much of a hoop league, but they had 49 of their baseball players, over five per team, drafted this week. .

-- Matt Holliday's father Tom is assistant coach at NC State; he has been in College World Series 14 times as a coach. .

-- The sound of aluminum bats make watching college ball a lot different than watching major leagues on TV.

-- Has to be tough on coaches to have their players drafted while the national playoffs are going on. Nothing like a huge distraction during the most important part of the season.
