It is parimutuel wagering. The bets are made against other bettors, not the house. The house takes 20% of the win, place, and show pools, ( and even more on exotics)so they don't care who wins. Obviously when a huge amount is wagered on one horse, the expanded pool means more earnings for the track, whether the favorite wins or not.
You can't always get what you want, but if you try some time, you might find, you get what you need.

I wouldn't bet a 1-4 horse any more than I would bet a -400 favorite in baseball or any sport for that matter-the risk reward ratio is off the scale and as we all know and as we saw today, shit can and does happen!

IMO was pretty obvious watching that shit and hearing all the pre-game MASSIVE bets that were thrown down on Big Brown that Vegas wasnt gonna let that happen. His jockey may have been paid off who knows anymore really...

This is ALWAYS within the realm of possibility as it is with ANY sport.
My own theory is that in a lot of cases like this when something seems to be a mortal lock, a lot of perennial LOSERS step in and bet it, figuring this is an easy way to get back some of money they are down from betting in other sports;you know what usually happens when this occurs.

The horse was going to be worth $100M if he won today. Don't know too many people that would pay off more than that to take a dive.

                  This thread is amusing

This is correct.....you are not betting against the house during a horse race.....thats why you get closing odds and not odds when you bet as you would betting against the house.....nobody cares who wins, the house just keeps their cut.....like a betting exchange.

                    PEACE

Interesting was not quite exactly sure how it worked. The point I'm stating is very high dollar amount poured in on Big Brown and the horse wasn't even close. Was a easy deposit for the house.

Congrats to anyone who had the winner

                          Other possibilities;
                          1) Don't know if horses have curfews or not, but perhaps Big B was out too late parting with his signifcant other last night, and was still "half in the bag" at race time.
                          2) Perhaps Big B and the other horses in the race conspired for "horse reasons" unknown to humans to let another horse win.
                          3) Perhaps all of the horses in the race except Big B somehow conspired against him to ensure he wouldn't win.
                          4) Perhaps Big B was just lazy today in view of the extreme heat and/or figured since there was no kind of monetary/food incentive for him, why bother to give his all(maybe for at least today he "pulled a Manny Ramirez'".
                          5) Perhaps his biorhytm was off today.
Perhaps someone will write a book telling us about other conspiratorial reasons why Big B lost today.
ps I would love to know if any one else has some other reasons why the horse lost other than the obvious ones.

In parimutuel wagering the house gets a cut of the total amount bet. PERIOD. Big Brown evidently lost because he isn;t bred to get the distance and he has bad feet that caused him not to extend himself. I bet horses every day of my life. This happens a lot.
