            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            Belmont Stakes Raceday

It could be a historic day at Belmont Park on Saturday, as Big Brown tries to become only the 12th horse ever and the first in 30 years to win the elusive Triple Crown in the Belmont Stakes.

Either due to his own dominance or to the questionable strength of the field around him, Big Brown is a huge favorite to win the Belmont at 2/5. It looked like Big Brown’s run at Affirmed - the last Triple Crown winner - might be in jeopardy a few weeks ago after a crack was discovered in his left front foot. However, the crack was found to be very minor and Big Brown went through his regular training regimen without any problems leading up to the Belmont. For added safety a synthetic patch was applied to the hoof on Friday which should all but erase any doubts regarding Big Brown’s health.

Judging by the rest of the odds for the 140th running of the Belmont, the only horse the oddsmakers think has a real chance to upset Big Brown is Casino Drive, listed at 7/2. In his very short racing career Casino Drive is undefeated in two races, both of which were impressive victories. In his maiden, which took place in Japan, Casino Drive utterly destroyed the rest of the field, winning by 11 ½ lengths. In his first race on American soil, Casino Drive won the Peter Pan Stakes by 5 ¾ lengths.

Following Big Brown and Casino Drive on the Belmont odds is a former challenger of Big Brown, Denis of Cork at 12/1. Denis of Cork last raced in the Kentucky Derby and finished third behind Big Brown and the late Eight Belles. Also returning from the Derby field to take another shot at Big Brown is Tale of Ekati at 20/1 and Anak Nakal at 30/1. Tale of Ekati finished fourth in the Derby, while Anak Nakal was seventh.

There will also be two horses from the Preakness Stakes field running in the Belmont. They include Macho Again, a 20/1 Belmont underdog, and Icabad Crane, also listed at 20/1. Macho Again finished as runner-up to Big Brown, while Icabad Crane followed him in third place.

            Odds to win Belmont Stakes

            Big Brown 2/5
            Casino Drive 7/2
            Denis of Cork 12/1
            Icabad Crane 20/1
            Macho Again 20/1
            Tale of Ekati 20/1
            Anak Nakal 30/1
            Da’ Tara 30/1
            Ready’s Echo 30/1
            Guadalcanal 50/1

              Belmont Analysis.........

What a great day for racing. We have a ligitimate shot at the first triple crown winner in 30 years. From a betting standpoint there is not much value and Big Brown is a legitimate odds-on favorite for the final leg. It is hard to go past and quite frankly, as a fan of racing, I dont want to be rooting against the best shot at the honor in 30 years. Here is a quick synoposis of the field from my perspective:

Big Brown: Class of the field. Hoof little worry should handle a pretty weak group of three year olds

Guadalcanal: A maiden against this Big boy; NOPE Macho Again: Trouble in Preakness, still way back.

Denis of Cork: Skipped middle leg after needing the Derby; where he didn't come into the race on best of terms

Casino Drive: Japanese hope is the wildcard but hard to come back here after Peter Pan

Da'Tara: Zito says he'll go to the front, can you spell DOOM

Tale of Ekati: Won slow Wood here, dont like Tagg and a minor share is all I see from this guy

Anak Nakal: Zito's other horse is looking to benefit from fast pace. May be better later in the year

Ready's Echo: 3rd in Peter Pan, another pace factor. Pletcher owns track but dont think this guy is good enough

Icabad Crane: Had some trouble at key point in the Preakness. May be second best here and might have a big one in him; Second Choice

Look, the race is Big Brown's to lose. The pace could be crazy fast and if Kent gets sucked up too far or taken out of his game something strange could happen.

Big Brown is yet to face adversity and have to chase into the stretch. He looks very tough to beat. Icabad Crane had some trouble in last and may have been closer at the end. Because he may be some value and i think he has the best shot at an upset, I will place a few dollars on Icabad Crane to satisfy my 'value' side. Enjoy the races

              The Bets:
              $50 Exacta Big Brown/Icabad Crane
              $25 Exacta Icabad Crane/Big Brown
              $25 Tri Big Brown/Icabad Crane/Denis of Cork,Anak Nakal
$10 Tri Icabad Crane/Big Brown/Denis of Cork, Anak Nakal $15WPS Icabad Crane
              Total Wagers: $190.00

                      SCOREBOARD

                      Saturday, June 7

Chicago Cubs at Los Angeles Dodgers (3:55 p.m. EDT). Carlos Zambrano (8-1) has seven wins and three no-decisions since his only loss at Philadelphia on April 11. He leads Chicago against the Dodgers and Derek Lowe (3-5).

                      Friday

                      — Brandon Webb, Diamondbacks, became the majors’ first 11-game winner after limiting Pittsburgh to one run and three hits in seven innings of a 3-1 victory.

                      — Garrett Atkins and Brad Hawpe, Rockies. Atkins tied the game with a two-run triple and Hawpe gave Colorado the lead with a two-run homer in a five-run eighth inning in a 6-4 win over Milwaukee.

                      — Carlos Quentin and Joe Crede, White Sox. Quentin hit a three-run homer and Crede went 4-for-4 with two homers in Chicago’s 10-6 win over Minnesota.

                      — Shane Victorino, Phillies, drove in the go-ahead run with a triple in the top of the 10th, then threw out Gregor Blanco at the plate as the attempted tying run in the bottom of the inning in a 4-3 victory over Atlanta.

                      — Felix Hernandez, Mariners, allowed six hits in six shutout innings and three Seattle pitchers shut out Boston 8-0.

                      — Jay Bruce, Reds, had three hits and three RBIs in an 11-3 victory over Florida.

                      — Scott Kazmir, Rays, gave up two runs and six hits in eight innings to extend his winning streak to a career-best six straight starts with a 12-4 victory over Texas.

                      — Hiroki Kuroda, Dodgers, allowed four hits and struck out a career-high 11 in his first complete game in a 3-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

                      SUSPENDED

A day after the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays tangled, Major League Baseball suspended eight players for a total of 38 games. Boston outfielder Coco Crisp and Tampa Bay pitcher James Shields, whose fight turned into a wild, bench-clearing brawl at Fenway Park, were the hardest hit. Crisp got seven games, pitcher Jon Lester received five games and first baseman Sean Casey three. For Tampa Bay, Shields got six games, DH-outfielder Jonny Gomes and pitcher Edwin Jackson five games each, outfielder Carl Crawford received four games and second baseman Akinori Iwamura got three. All eight players also were fined undisclosed amounts.

                      SCRATCHED

Texas Rangers shortstop Michael Young was scratched from the lineup against the Tampa Rays due to a bruised left ring finger. Young had started 60 of Texas’ first 62 games and carries a 21-game hitting streak, longest in the majors this season and four short of his career high. Ramon Vazquez, the Rangers’ regular third baseman, got his fifth start of the season at shortstop, with catcher Gerald Laird drawing his first career start at third base.

                      SINGLES KING

Mariners first baseman Richie Sexson went 3-for-4 with three singles for his first three-hit game since last June 1. It was the first time the power-hitting Sexson had three singles in a game since Sept. 25, 2006, against Oakland.

                      WINNING WEBB

Brandon Webb became the majors’ first 11-game winner, holding Pittsburgh to one run and three hits over seven innings in the Diamondbacks’ 3-1 victory over the Pirates. Webb (11-2), coming off a 4-0 shutout over Washington on Saturday in which he yielded only six singles, didn’t allow a hit until Jose Bautista’s two-out single in the fifth. The right-hander has permitted only one extra-base hit—Jason Bay’s RBI double in the sixth—while giving up nine hits and one run in 16 innings over his past two starts.

                      WELCOME BACK

The Colorado Rockies activated right fielder Brad Hawpe from the 15-day disabled list before their game with the Milwaukee Brewers. Hawpe has been out since May 21 because of a strained right hamstring. Hawpe has gotten off to a slow start this season, hitting just .231 with three homers and 17 RBIs in 42 games.

                      AT A LOSS

Detroit’s Justin Verlander lost for the ninth time this season to tie San Francisco’s Barry Zito for the major league lead. Verlander gave up three runs and five hits over seven innings in a 4-2 loss to Cleveland. He struck out a season-high eight and issued four walks. Verlander already has three more losses this season in 13 starts than he had last year in 32.

                      SWINGS

The Yankees have scored only three runs in Darrell Rasner’s past three starts—all losses—after tallying 21 in his first three outings—all wins— this season. Rasner threw 118 pitches, the most by a Yankees starter this season, in a 2-1 loss to Kansas City on Friday night. … Johnny Damon is batting .231 in Yankees losses this season and .394 in their wins. He hasn’t struck out in his past 48 plate appearances, the longest such active streak in the majors, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

                      TRIAL DATE SET

Barry Bonds’ trial date on federal charges of lying to a grand jury about his use of performance-enhancing drugs was set for March 2, 2009, on Friday after baseball’s home run king pleaded not guilty when he was re-arraigned on 15 felony counts of lying under oath and obstruction of justice. Lead Bonds attorney Allen Ruby pleaded not guilty to the charges on the slugger’s behalf, while Bonds stood silently in front of the judge. Ninety minutes later, Ruby agreed to the date before a second judge.

                      SPEAKING

“It is tough for me to look at my record right now, so I try not to do it. I just have to stay focused and try to control what I can control.”—Tigers starter Justin Verlander, who dropped to 2-9 after giving up three runs and five hits in seven innings of a 4-2 loss to Cleveland on Friday night.

                      SEASONS

1938—Cleveland pitcher Johnny Allen walked off the mound in the second inning and didn’t return after plate umpire Bill McGowan wanted Allen’s dangling sweat shirt sleeve to be cut off because it was distracting Boston Red Sox hitters. Allen was fined $250 by manager Ossie Vitt and the shirt ended up in the Hall of Fame.

1950—The Boston Red Sox collected 42 total bases, including six home runs and 23 hits in a 20-4 rout of the St. Louis Browns.

2006—Pitcher Jason Grimsley was released by the Arizona Diamondbacks, a day after his home was searched by federal agents following his admission he used human growth hormone, steroids and amphetamines.

2006—Colorado tied a major league record with five sacrifice flies in a 16-9 win over Pittsburgh. Seattle set the mark against Oakland on Aug. 7, 1988.

2007—Curt Schilling came within one out of his first career no-hitter, losing his bid when Shannon Stewart lined a clean single to right field in Boston’s 1-0 victory over the Oakland Athletics. Schilling retired Mark Ellis on a foul popout to end the third one-hitter of his career.

2007—Joe Torre became the 10th manager in major league history to get 2,000 victories as the New York Yankees defeated the Chicago White Sox 10-3.

Mariners: Miguel Batista hasn't won a game in almost a month. It's not surprising when you consider that Batista has allowed 11 walks and 17 runs in his last 20.2 innings pitched. As you might expect, three of the last four games that Batista started have gone over the total. He's also struggled on the road, going 1-3 while allowing teams to hit .293 against him. Batista got a no decision against Boston on May 27 after allowing only three runs through seven innings in a 4-3 Mariners win.

Mariners are 8-22 in their last 30 road games.

                            Key Injuries - NONE

                            PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Red Sox (-180, O/U 10.5): After a solid start to the season, Tim Wakefield has fallen on hard times of late. The Red Sox have come away losers the last three times Wakefield has taken the mound. Over that span, Wakefield has allowed 11 runs in 20 innings of work. Five of Wakefield's previous six starts have come on the road. He returns to Fenway Park today where he is 2-1 with a 4.26 ERA in four starts this season. Four of Wakefield's last five starts have gone OVER the total.

Red Sox are 16-6 in the last 22 meetings at Boston.
Red Sox are 42-13 in their last 55 home games.
The UNDER is 10-3-1 in Boston's last 14 games as a favorite.

Key Injuries - DH/OF Manny Ramirez (.301; hamstring) is questionable. OF Jacoby Ellsbury (.287; wrist) is questionable.

                            PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Cleveland Indians at Detroit Tigers [FOX | 3:55 PM ET]

Indians: Aaron Laffey was cruising along nicely this season until he ran into the Rangers his last time out and gave up 11 hits and eight runs over five innings. It was only the second time this season that Laffey has allowed more than two runs in a game. Laffey has been spectacular at home but that success hasn't transferred over to his road starts, where he's 0-1 with an ERA of 7.50. Even worse, teams are hitting a whopping .347 against Laffey on the road. Laffey's last two starts have both gone OVER the total.

                            Key Injuries - NONE

                            PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Tigers (-115, O/U 10): Kenny Rogers has pitched brilliantly in his last two starts but has two no decisions to show for it. In his last 14 innings of work, Rogers has given up just two runs but he's suffered from a lack of run support. The Gambler is 2-1 at home this season but his 6.10 ERA at Comerica Park is nothing to brag about. Rogers' last two games have gone under but his eight previous outings all soared OVER the total.

                            Key Injuries - NONE

                            PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Chicago Cubs at Los Angeles Dodgers [FOX | 3:55 PM ET]

Cubs (-130, O/U 7.5): Carlos Zambrano is pitching like a future Cy Young winner with an 8-1 record and 2.81 ERA. Zambrano's lone lose came all the way back on April 11. Big Z just shut down the Dodgers a week ago at Wrigley Field, getting the win after allowing only one run in eight innings of work. Being on the road is no problem for Zambrano. He's 4-1 with a 2.73 ERA away from home this season. As dominating as Zambrano has been, surprisingly four of his last five starts have easily gone OVER the total.

Cubs are 10-2 in their last 11 games overall.
Cubs are 2-7 in their last 9 games as an underdog.

                            Key Injuries - NONE

                            PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Dodgers: Derek Lowe is just 1-1 over his last three starts but he's been pitching extremely well. In his last 22 innings pitched, Lowe has given up just three runs. One of those games was against the Cubs where Lowe settled for a no decision after not allowing a run over seven innings in a 2-1 Dodgers loss. Lowe has been much more effective at home than on the road this year. In seven starts at Dodger Stadium, Lowe possesses a formidable 2.97 ERA.

The UNDER is 9-2 in LA's last 11 games as a favorite.
The UNDER is 8-2 in LA's last 10 home games.

                            Key Injuries - NONE

Minnesota Twins at Chicago White Sox [WGN | 7:05 PM ET]

Twins: Livan Hernandez hasn't recorded a loss in his last three starts thanks in large part to great run support but he's pitched awful in all three outings. Over that three-game span, Hernandez has given up an unfathomable 36 hits and 19 runs in just 17.1 innings of work. Amazingly, the Twins won two of those games. As expected with his recent struggles, nine of the last 10 games Hernandez has started went over the total. Hernandez's best performance this season came against the White Sox when he pitched a complete game, allowing just a single run.

The UNDER is 7-3 in Minnesota's last 10 road games.

                            Key Injuries - NONE

                            PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

White Sox (-160, O/U 9): The White Sox starting rotation has pitched phenomenal so far this season, although the one exception has been Mark Buehrle. Buehrle has only won once in his last 10 starts and has a lofty 5.20 ERA on the season. In his last outing versus the Twins, Buehrle was lit up for nine hits and seven runs in just 5.2 innings. Overall, Buehrle has had success against Minnesota over his career, going 20-11 with a 3.87 ERA in 32 starts. Even though he's been inconsistent, three of Buehrle's last four starts have come in UNDER the total.

White Sox are 15-6 in their last 21 games overall.
White Sox are 7-3 in the last 10 meetings at Chicago.
The OVER is 7-1 in Vazquez's last 8 starts on grass.

                            Key Injuries - NONE

The Cardinals look to bounce back from last night's loss in Houston and come into the contest with a 5-1 record on the road when the line is between -100 and -125. St. Louis is the pick (-105) according to Dunkel, which has the Cardinals favored by 1. Dunkel Pick: St. Louis (-105). Here are all of today's games.
