Friday's List of 13: Rays visit in Boston very unpleasant

      13) Coco Crisp went out of his way to hurt Akinori Iwamura at second base Wednesday night, taking him on a steal try with a takeout slide, like he was breaking up a double play. He didn't hurt Iwamura, but words were exchanged with the Ray dugout.

      12) First at-bat Thursday, Red Sox already lead 3-1, and Crisp gets hit on the thigh by the first James Shields pitch. Now, if there are nine guys on the field who are ticked off at you, what is the last thing you do? Right. Crisp charged the mound.

      11) Tampa catcher Dioner Navarro bodyslammed Crisp like he was a little kid; Jonny Gomes came flying out of the dugout as if he were Chief Jay Strongbow and got some shots in. Even mild-mannered Carl Crawford sprinted in from left field to get at Crisp, but Navarro had him pinned to the ground so well that it was hard to get too many good shots in on Crisp.

      10) Of course, Boston TV announcers thought three or four Tampa players should be suspended, but only Crisp from Red Sox. Had Crisp simply gone to first base, and he was hit below the belt, there would have been no incident.

      9) Gomes is likely to get a long suspension for leaving bench and getting in middle of the fracas.

      8) Only the Rays could have a pitcher ejected and bring in guy to replace him named Balfour, who proceeded to walk the next guy.......on four straight balls.

      7) Funny thing about a fight like that: Crisp knocked helmet off his own head as he charged mound, and Shields ripped his hat off as Crisp approached; what exactly did that accomplish? Is it a known fact that you can't fight with a hat on?

      6) Crisp is lucky it was Shields and not Edwin Jackson who hit him; Jackson is a former boxer and a very tough guy.

      5) Ellsbury got hurt on diving catch in centerfield in the fourth inning; had Crisp not charged the mound, he would have been in centerfield and not Ellsbury .

      4) Odd part of game is that first pitch was moved up to 6:00 so the game wouldn't conflict with the NBA Finals, but the fight, (this wasn't a typical baseball fight) and the ensuing warmup of new pitcher Balfour delayed the game around forty minutes So much for everyone seeing both games.

      3) Game got even weirder in fifth inning, when Manny Ramirez had to be separated from Kevin Youkilis in the Boston dugout no idea at all what that was about, but it was heated.

      2) Rays had a fight in spring training with the Bronx ballclub, when Shelley Duncan also tried to take out Iwamura at second base with a dirty slide as he tried to stretch single into double. Gomes came flying in from right field to get into that one, and that is likely to make his suspension for this one a little longer.

      1) Long story short, after three dreadul games in Beantown, it will be good for the Rays to get to Arlington and regroup. If you had told them in spring training they'd be 1.5 games out of first place on June 6, I think they would have been satisfield.

        Weekend Sports Preview

The NBA Finals continue this weekend, while the Belmont Stakes gives bettors another option on top of MLB, AFL, WNBA, NASCAR and Formula 1.

The NBA Finals between the Lakers and Celtics tipped off on Thursday night, and after two days off the series resumes in Boston with Game 2 on Sunday. Game 3 is scheduled for Tuesday night back in Los Angeles.

The 140th running of the Belmont Stakes goes on Saturday night with Big Brown looking to snap a 30-year Triple Crown drought. Big Brown is a huge favorite to make history at 1/3, while Casino Drive is considered to be his biggest threat at 5/2.

In the Major Leagues this weekend Cleveland takes on Detroit in what was supposed to be a matchup of the top contenders in the American League Central. Other AL divisional matchups include Baltimore at Toronto, Minnesota at the White Sox and the Angels at Oakland. The rest of the AL weekend schedule sees Seattle at Boston, Kansas City at the Yankees and Tampa Bay at Texas.

In the National League this weekend the only divisional matchups on tap are Philadelphia at Atlanta and St Louis at Houston. Some other interesting matchups include Cincinnati at Florida, Milwaukee at Colorado and the Cubs at the Dodgers. Rounding out the rest of the NL series are Arizona at Pittsburgh, San Francisco at Washington and the Mets at San Diego.

On the gridiron this weekend Week 15 in the AFL kicks off on Saturday with a very busy day that includes six games. Starting things off on Saturday night is New Orleans at New York (-1.5), Chicago at Cleveland (+4.5) Colorado at Grand Rapids (-6) and Georgia at Columbus (+4). The rest of the Saturday schedule includes Orlando at Tampa Bay (-3.5) and Philadelphia at Dallas (-1.5).

Sunday's AFL schedule includes only one contest, as Arizona takes on Kansas City (-3).

In the WNBA, the weekend gets started on Friday night with six games. They include Minnesota at Connecticut, Chicago at Atlanta, Houston at New York, Washington at San Antonio, Detroit at Sacramento and Phoenix at Los Angeles.

There are three more games on Saturday, as Houston battles Indiana, Atlanta takes on Chicago and Detroit travels to Seattle. Three more games finish off the weekend on Sunday, as Washington faces Connecticut, Sacramento drops in on New York and San Antonio clashes with Minnesota.

The drivers of NASCAR return to the track on Sunday at Pocono Raceway in the Pocono 500. Jeff Gordon won at Pocono last season, but Kyle Busch will be the favorite heading into the race, as the points leader goes for his fifth win of the season.

Formula 1 also takes to the track in North America on Sunday with the Canadian Grand Prix at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal. Lewis Hamilton is the defending champion of this event and he should be one of the favorites to top the podium again coming off a win in the Monaco Grand Prix two weeks ago.

                        Friday, June 6

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                        Hot lines: Today’s MLB bets
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        Tampa Bay at Texas (+115, 9 ½)

So the Texas Rangers have played over the total in six consecutive games (three of them against Oakland, which has one of the best pitching staffs in the majors). They will have Vincente Padilla on the hill, who despite his 7-2 record, has an 8-4 over/under record in his 12 starts. And they have the most productive offense (347 runs scored) in baseball.

Sounds like the makings of an “over”, right?

Not with Scott Kazmir on the mound. The All-Star lefty has allowed only two earned runs in his six starts this season since coming off the DL and he has yet to allow a home run. The last time Kazmir faced Texas, he worked seven innings, allowed one run, three hits and struck out 10. Today’s is the highest total he’s seen this season.

As for the Rays, they are coming off an exhausting and deflating series in Boston in which they dropped all three games and fell out of first place. A long trip to Texas probably won’t help as they try to get their bats back into a rhythm after averaging only 2.5 runs per game in their last two series.

                        Pick: Under

San Francisco at Washington (+105, 7)

On paper, both these clubs look equally horrendous. Both are hovering around 10 games below .500 and neither seems capable of doing the little things necessary to win ballgames. But with Tim Lincecum going against Jason Bergmann, the Giants become by far the superior club. Add all the injured Nationals position players into the equation (Kearns, Lo Duca, Zimmerman, Belliard, Johnson, Estrada) and the balance tips even further in San Fran’s favor. Then consider the Giants are coming off a day of rest while the Nats went into extra innings in the back end of yesterday’s double-header with St. Louis, and the scenario probably couldn’t get any better for Giants backers.

                        Pick: Giants

Seattle Mariners at Boston Red Sox [NESN | 7:05 PM ET]

Mariners: Felix Hernandez is coming off his best performance of the year, shutting out the Tigers over seven innings of work. Before that game, Hernandez had lost five of six starts. Hernandez has been an under machine this year, with 10 of his 12 starts coming in UNDER the total. Hernandez is only 1-2 on the road, although he possesses a strong 2.83 ERA. He's been tough on the Red Sox, allowing Boston hitters to bat just .215 against him over his career.

                            Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (Side Play of the Day)

Red Sox (-155, O/U 9): Bartolo Colon has been a pleasant surprise for the Red Sox this season since being called up from the minors. Colon is 3-0 and has only given up seven runs in 18 innings pitched. One of Colon's three starts was against Seattle, where he allowed just one run in seven innings of work. Colon has had success versus Seattle over his career, winning six of his last eight outings against the Mariners.

Red Sox are 42-12 in their last 54 home games.

Key Injuries - DH David Ortiz (.252; wrist) is on the 15-day DL.

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Philadelphia Phillies at Atlanta Braves [7:35 PM ET]

Phillies: Jamie Moyer is currently on a four-game winning streak, although the wily veteran has been blessed with unbelievable run support over that span. The last four times Moyer has taken the hill, Philadelphia has scored an eye-popping 49 runs. It's tough to lose games when your club is putting up runs like a pinball machine. Not surprisingly, Moyer's last six starts have all gone OVER the total. Moyer has been tough on the road this season, going 3-1 with a 3.41 ERA in five starts.

                            Key Injuries - NONE

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Braves (-150, O/U 9): If opposing teams are looking to get to Tim Hudson, it's not likely to happen at Turner Field, where he's 5-1 with a 2.81 ERA on the season. Atlanta has dropped the last two games Hudson has started but both of those were on the road. Control has been key to Hudson's success in 2008. He's walked just 19 batters in 83.2 innings of work this season. The UNDER has cashed the last eight times Hudson has taken the mound.

Braves are 40-17 in their last 57 home games.

                            Key Injuries - NONE

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Minnesota Twins at Chicago White Sox [8:11 PM ET] | Full Matchup

Twins: Nick Blackburn has been solid for the Twins this season but he hasn't factored in many decisions away from home. In six road starts, Blackburn is 1-1 with an ERA of 4.26. Blackburn hasn't been involved in the decision during his two most recent starts, although he's pitched well allowing just three runs in 12.2 innings. Three of the last four games that Blackburn has started have gone UNDER the total.

Key Injuries - 2B Asdrubal Cabrera (.283; hip) is expected to return to the lineup.

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 3

White Sox (-170, O/U 8.5): Javier Vazquez is one of the quality starting pitchers the White Sox have in their rotation this season. Like other Chicago hurlers, Vazquez has had to overcome a lack of run support but he does posses a record of 5-4 to go along with a 3.43 ERA. Vazquez has been tough to beat at home, going 3-1 with opposing teams hitting just .234 against him. Vazquez is coming off a heartbreaking 2-0 loss to Tampa, where he allowed just two runs over seven innings of work.

                            Key Injuries - NONE

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Chicago Cubs at Los Angeles Dodgers [WGN | 10:40 PM ET]

Cubs: Scott Gallagher hasn't been lights out for the Cubs but he has won three of his five starts since being placed in the starting rotation. Gallagher has given up 15 runs and 10 walks in 27.2 innings pitched as a starter but the Cubs have managed to win four of those outings. One concern is that Gallagher's lone road start was his worst performance of the season, giving up eight hits and five runs over 4.2 innings of work. Three of Gallagher's five starts have come in UNDER the total.

Cubs are 10-1 in their last 11 games overall.

                            Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 3 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

Dodgers (-130, O/U 8.5): Hiroki Kuroda just faced the Cubs last week and performed well, giving up just two runs, although he took the loss in that game. Kuroda has only won once in his last 10 starts and was creamed for six runs in 2.2 innings his last time out against the Mets. This is Kuroda's sixth appearance at Dodger Stadium, although he's only factored in the decision once, going 1-0. Despite his struggles, the UNDER has cashed the last four times Kuroda has taken the hill.

The UNDER is 8-2 in LA's last 10 games as a favorite.
The UNDER is 7-2 in LA's last 9 home games.

                            Key Injuries - NONE

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 4
