          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

          L.A. Lakers at Boston Celtics (-2 1/2, 192)

If you've been wringing your hands and refreshing your odds board for the last few days, dying for Game 1 between the Lakers and Celtics, just imagine how jacked Kobe Bryant is right now. He's been waiting for this since he was eight.

The L.A. Daily News reported this week that when Bryant was living in Italy as a kid, his grandfather would mail him tapes of the 1987 Celtics-Lakers showdown so he could stay in the loop. He told the News he hated the Celtics then and there's no doubt he'll hate them again at some point in this series.

Of course, the Finals aren't all about Kobe. The Celtics are a group that can beat you a lot of different ways, no matter who's up against them on the other side of the court. LeBron James knows all about that. But it's worth noting that James gave Boston everything it could handle with a weaker supporting staff than the one that Bryant has. Matchups could end up being a major concern for the Celtics, who pride themselves on defense.

Tony Allen likely won't be fit to guard Bryant as he's suffering from an Achilles' tendon issue, while Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom are a handful for any team when they're on their game. And even though home court has ruled this postseason, the Finals may be a different story. Detroit proved the Celtics are beatable in Boston. Maybe Los Angeles can do the same.

          Pick: Lakers

Hot Lines: Wednesday's best MLB bets
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Cubs at San Diego (+110, 8)

It's not like the name of Ted Lilly strikes fear into the hearts of opposing batting lineups, but he’s better than his 5.54 ERA would indicate. That number was significantly plumped up after his last outing - a three-inning disaster in Colorado in which he gave up eight hits and seven runs in what became a 10-9 loss.

But Petco Park should be a much more hospitable venue for Lilly. The majors' most pitcher-friendly park is a tough enough place to score runs in general (over/under 13-17), but when there's a lefty on the hill, the Padres are hitting an astonishing .182. Lilly is 4-0 in his career against the Pads and his two career appearances in San Diego played under the total.

The Cubbies have been hitting well, but Greg Maddux should be able to slow them down. The veteran right-hander has a 1.84 ERA at home and the Cubs get him just when he's getting hot. He's 3-0 in his last three starts and hasn't allowed more than two runs in any of those outings.

                    Pick: Under

                    Baltimore at Minnesota (-110, 9)

Daniel Cabrera is the workhorse of this Baltimore pitching staff. He has a personal 5-1 record, a 3.60 ERA and has worked at least seven innings in all but one of his last five starts. He has a good history against Minnesota working in his favor (5-2, 3.33 ERA in eight meetings) which should help counter the Orioles' 4-13 record against the Twins over last three seasons. Essentially, Cabrera's name on the lineup card is the only reason to like Baltimore today - but it's a big reason.

The O's have been brutal at the plate this season, but there's some hope tonight because they've performed much better against left-handers (.270). That's a good sign for Baltimore as they face Glen Perkins for the first time. The young lefty has performed well this year against some excellent lineups, but he's inexperienced and still unproven, which could open the door for the underdog in this game.

                    Pick: Orioles

                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Colorado Rockies at Los Angeles Dodgers [3:10 PM ET]

Rockies: Aaron Cook is one of the few starting pitchers that is getting the job done for Colorado this season, going 7-3 with a 3.36 ERA. While he's pitched well overall, Cook is coming off his worst outing of the year against the Cubs, giving up 10 hits and seven runs in 6.1 innings of work. Cook already owns a win over the Dodgers this season after giving up just two runs in seven innings pitched back on May 4. Three of Cook's last four starts have gone OVER the total.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Dodgers (-135, O/U 8): The Dodgers have won each of Clayton Kershaw's first two career starts but the rookie was hit pretty hard in his second outing against the Mets. After a strong performance at home against the Cardinals, the Mets touched up Kershaw for four runs in 3.2 innings. Opposing teams are hitting .270 against Kershaw over his brief career.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Tampa Bay Rays at Boston Red Sox [ESPN | 7:05 PM ET]

Rays: Edwin Jackson doesn't have a great record in 2008 (3-4) but he's pitched well overall for the Rays. In 11 starts this season, Jackson has given up one run or less five times. Unlike some of the other Rays pitchers, Jackson has actually performed well on the road, sporting a 3.09 ERA away from Tropicana Field. After the first four games Jackson appeared in went under the total, four of his last six have gone OVER.

Rays are 9-43 in the last 52 meetings at Boston.
The OVER is 8-1 in Tampa Bay's last 9 games as a road underdog.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Red Sox (-170, O/U 9): Josh Beckett hasn't been dominating this season, going 5-4 with a 4.30 ERA so far in 2008. The problem for Beckett- like it was two years ago – has been the long ball. Beckett has already given up 11 home runs this season, including four in one game versus the Brewers. Beckett is a perfect 3-0 at Fenway Park but his ERA is an unimpressive 5.40. Four of Beckett's last five starts have gone UNDER the total.

Red Sox are 40-12 in their last 52 home games.

Key Injuries - DH David Ortiz (.252; wrist) is on the 15-day DL.

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 6

Cincinnati Reds at Philadelphia Phillies [7:05 PM ET]

Reds: Edinson Volquez has been sensational this season but now he'll have to go up against the red hot Phillies lineup. Volquez has given up two runs or less in nine of his 10 starts this year, helping six of those outings go under the total. Volquez is just 2-2 on the road this season but a lot of that has to do with a lack of run support, seeing that his ERA away from home is a sparkling 1.17.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (Side Play of the Day)

Phillies (-125, O/U 9.5): Brett Myers has really been struggling of late, losing four of his last five starts. In his previous 29.1 innings of work, Myers has given up an alarming 25 runs. The Phillies have suffered overall with Myers on the mound, losing six of his last seven starts. Myers has faired better at home however, going 3-1 with a 4.12 ERA in six starts.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Cleveland Indians at Texas Rangers [8:05 PM ET]

Indians (-145, O/U 10): Cliff Lee and his minute 1.88 ERA square off against a good hitting Rangers squad. Lee has been remarkable this season, allowing two or fewer runs seven times. Not surprisingly, Lee has been an under machine, with seven of his 10 starts coming in under the total. Being on the road shouldn't bother Lee tonight. He's 5-1 with an impressive 1.91 ERA away from home this season.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

Rangers: Sidney Ponson is battling for Comeback Player of the Year honors at the moment thanks to his 4-1 record and 3.83 ERA in 2008. Ponson hasn't been dominating in all of his starts this year, although he has allowed just one run on three separate occasions. The honeymoon could end for Ponson tonight, however. He's 0-7 in his career against the Indians, with a 9.47 ERA. Tribe hitters are batting an obscene .342 versus Ponson in 12 games against the veteran.

                          Key Injuries - NONE
