Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend........

    13) Brutal weekend for Braves, who went 1-5 on a midwestern swing, with four one-run losses, two in extra frames. Atlanta is now 2-16 this season in one-run games, and Hudson is hurt, just as Smoltz comes off the DL to become the closer.

    12) San Diego's Kevin Kouzmanoff had home run taken away from him on great catch by Ryan Langerhans Thursday, then grounded into triple play Friday, not a great combination.

    11) Jamie Moyer pitched against Andrew Miller Sunday; when Moyer got drafted by the Cubs, Miller hadn't been born yet.

    10) Detroit Tigers are 5-17 against their divisional rivals.

    9) LSU, Long Beach State and USC all have nine alumni in the major leagues right now, most of any colleges.

    8) Dodgers shortstops are 0 for last 29, are hitting .130 since Rafael Furcal went on the DL.

    7) Odd stat line of day goes to Daric Barton of A's: 0-2-0-0.
He batted four times, walked all four times, scoring twice. A's scored nine times in 7th inning-- Rangers lifted starter Feldman after six innings-- first seven Oakland batters in 7th scored, vs pair of relievers who got no batters out.

    6) World Series of Poker is underway in Vegas, with final table of first event, a $10,000 buy-in, down to four, including MIT's math/blackjack whiz Andy Bloch and TV host Mike Sexton.

    5) Event 2 was a $1,500 buy-in that looked like it was going to have the biggest World Series field ever (for a non-final table)

People in Nevada, by the way, really want John McCain to get beat in November; he is staunchly anti-gambling. He does like beer, however, seeing as the Mrs owns a huge distributorship.

    4) So much for fresh legs: Red Wings have nine players over age 35, Penguins have three. Wings have one guy under age 25, Pittsburgh has seven. Wings lead series 3-1, can win Lord Stanley's Cup Monday night at home.

    3) Is there a Sporting News jinx? Troy Percival went on the DL before the issue with his picture on cover got to newsstands.

    2) Rays lost first game of series to White Sox Thursday, then beat first-place Pale Hose three times in row, despite scoring a total of just eight runs in the three wins. Thats good pitching.

    1) By the way, typical lack of class shown by Ozzie Guillen on Sunday, after the 4-3 loss, saying his team didn't have enough talent on it to win. Always blame the players, a great way to motivate them. White Sox did go 5-39 in series when they had runners in scoring position, but guys go into slumps.

                2008 NHL playoffs

Detroit can win the Stanley Cup tonight at home; if they were going to lose this series, Penguins would have capaitalized on 80-second two-man advantage in Game 4. Red Wings have nine players over age 35, Penguins have three. Wings have one guy under age 25, Pittsburgh has seven. Experience is talking in this series (under is 3-0-1 in series so far), as younger Pens have a total of four goals in four games, one in three losses. Penguins will need a ton of spunk to get this series back to Pittsburgh.

                    Pittsburgh at Detroit (-230, 5)

A few weeks from now, the Pittsburgh Penguins may look back at Saturday's Game 4 and think about what might have been. The Pens had numerous powerplay opportunities to put the Red Wings on the run and couldn't convert a huge 5-on-3 in the third period. Now, Pittsburgh is fresh out of mulligans.

The Red Wings are a poised bunch. They rarely panic and have developed a fantastic offense that preaches patience and puck-control to go along with a rock-steady group of blueliners that has frustrated the young Pens at every turn.

If nothing else, this series will serve as a learning experience for Pittsburgh moving forward, but right now this club is overmatched in nearly every capacity. The only hope the Pens have at this point is to convert a couple ****** early in the game, though this unit with the man advantage isn't what it was earlier in the playoffs.

A lot of Pittsburgh's struggles have more to do with Detroit's defense than much else, but Sidney Crosby isn't generating as much offense from the sideboards as he normally does and Sergei Gonchar needs to be better at the point. Plus, as you've already heard a million times now, Evgeni Malkin is struggling.

One main difference between these teams is that Pittsburgh can't win if their three best players aren't dominant - Detroit can. The Wings have so many solid contributors and play such a disciplined system that Henrik Zetterberg, Pavel Datsyuk and Co. don't have to be amazing every single night.

Detroit isn't the kind of team that's going to let this 3-1 lead slip.

                    Pick: Under

                      Stanley Cup Gameday
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                      Monday NHL Gameday

The Red Wings began their postseason run with a win over the Predators back on April 20, and they can end it with a Cup-clinching victory over the Penguins on Monday night.

Detroit has actually made it all look pretty easy during the playoffs. The jumped out to a 2-0 lead in that set versus the Predators, dropped a couple of contests, and then won the series 4-2. They then swept away the Avalanche in Round 2, and they built a big 3-0 lead on Dallas in the third round (eventually needing six games to advance to the final).

And the Wings have stayed dominant in the Stanley Cup final. Detroit opened the series with back-to-back shutouts at home in Games 1 and 2, then dropped a 3-2 squeaker in Pittsburgh on Wednesday night before coming back with a win in Game 4 on Saturday.

The Pens actually opened the scoring at home on Saturday night, as Marian Hossa potted his 10th goal of the playoffs less than three minutes into the first period. That lead proved to be short-lived, however, as Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom netted his third marker of the postseason just four minutes later to tie up the contest at one apiece.

Neither team managed to score in the second period, but Jiri Hudler picked up a goal two minutes into the third period that put Detroit ahead for good. Red Wings netminder Chris Osgood stopped 22 of 23 Pittsburgh shots in the victory. Penguins counterpart Marc-Andre Fleury had a busier night, blocking 28 of the 30 Detroit shots in the defeat.

Pens superstar forward Sidney Crosby assisted on Hossa's goal in the first period on Saturday night, and he now leads the NHL in postseason scoring. Teammate Evgeni Malkin, however, was held off the night's scoresheet for the fourth consecutive contest.

The Red Wings will now look to close out this series with a win at home in Game 5 on Monday night (with puck drop at 8:00pm ET). And how well has Detroit fared in its own building so far during the playoffs? They were 3-0 at Joe Louis Arena against Nashville, 2-0 against Colorado, 2-1 against Dallas, and of course 2-0 so far against the Penguins.

The Penguins won each of their first three road games in the playoffs (two versus the Senators, one versus the Rangers), but since then they've managed to go just 1-4 away from Mellon Arena (that one other win came against the Flyers in Round 3). The Penguins were outscored 4-0 and 3-0 on the road in the first two meetings of this series.

The Red Wings are expected to have Tomas Holmstrom back in the lineup on Monday night; the forward missed Saturday's contest with a sore hamstring. Holmstrom has four goals and eight assists for 12 points in 19 playoff games this spring.

The oddsmakers don't think the Stanley Cup final will stretch beyond Monday night - they opened the Red Wings as -240 home favorites for Game 5 (with the total set at 5). If the Penguins are able to stave off elimination on Monday night they'll force a Game 6 in Pittsburgh on Wednesday night. A Game 7 would be contested in Detroit on Saturday.

New York Yankees at Minnesota Twins [ESPN | 7:10 PM ET]

Yankees (-150, O/U 9.5): Andy Pettitte has been extremely streaky in 2008 but luckily for the Yankees, he's hot right now. Pettitte won his first three starts of the season, lost four of his next five, and is back on a two-game winning streak. In his last 12.2 innings pitched, Pettitte has 12 strikeouts and allowed just four runs. Pettitte has been strong on the road, where he's obtained four of his five wins this season to go along with a respectable 3.72 ERA.

Yankees are 8-3 in their last 11 games overall.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 7 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

Twins: Livan Hernandez started the year off strong but he's been blasted in his last three outings. In his last 18.2 innings pitched, Hernandez has given up 31 hits and 17 runs. The Twins have won seven of Hernandez's 10 starts overall but are just 1-2 in his last three appearances. Things don't look like they will get any better for Hernandez tonight with the Yankees in town. He's 0-3 in his career versus New York with a 6.08 ERA.

Twins are 6-2 in their last 8 Monday games.
The OVER is 8-1 in Hernandez' last 9 starts overall.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Arizona Diamondbacks at Milwaukee Brewers [8:05 PM ET]

Diamondbacks: Since returning to the mound following cancer treatment, Doug Davis has one tremendous start under his belt and one awful outing. In his last start against the Giants, Davis was hit pretty hard, giving up six runs over five innings of work. Davis has actually been much better on the road than at home this season. In two starts away from Bank One Ballpark, Davis has a 2.53 ERA, compared to 6.55 at home. Davis is having a problem with walks this season, putting 13 batters on base in 21.2 innings pitched.

Diamondbacks are 2-8 in their last 10 road games.
Diamondbacks are 4-10 in the last 14 meetings at Milwaukee.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Brewers (-130, O/U 9): Jeff Suppan has been night and day this season, depending on where he pitches. On the road, Suppan has an ERA of 6.27. But at home Suppan's ERA drops all the way down to an unhittable 0.93. Luckily for Suppan and the Brewers, they are playing at home in Miller Park tonight. Suppan was masterful in his last outing at home against the Braves, giving up just four hits and no runs in eight innings of work. Not surprisingly, three of Suppan's four starts at Miller Park have easily gone UNDER the total.

Brewers are 7-1 in Suppan's last 8 home starts.
The UNDER is 8-3-1 in Milwaukee's last 12 Monday games.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (Side Play of the Day)

Los Angeles Angels at Seattle Mariners [10:10 PM ET]

Angels (-135, O/U 8.5): Ervin Santana has fixed the road woes that plagued him a year ago, going 4-1 with a 3.83 ERA away from home so far this season. That's the good news. The bad news is Santana's last two starts on the road have been has worst, giving up nine runs in 11.2 innings of work. In his first six starts, Santana didn't give up more than three runs in any one outing. However, in his last four appearances, he's allowed four runs or more three times.

The UNDER is 13-3-1 in LA's last 17 road games.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Mariners: After an awful start to the season, Jarrod Washburn was briefly moved to the bullpen before returning to the starting rotation last week against the Yankees. Even though the Mariners lost, Washburn pitched one of his best games of the season, allowing just two runs over six innings. The over has been a wise investment with Washburn on the mound lately. The last five games he's started have all gone OVER the total.

Mariners are 1-9 in their last 10 games as an underdog.
The OVER is 8-2 in Seattle's last 10 games as an underdog.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 4

                              Monday, June 2

Chicago Cubs at San Diego (10:05 p.m. EDT). The Cubs try to keep their momentum going when they send Carlos Zambrano (7-1, 2.33 ERA) to the mound against the Padres.

                              STARS

                              Sunday

                              - Gabe Gross, Rays, hit a tying two-run triple in the fifth inning, and then homered leading off the bottom of the 10th to lift Tampa Bay to a 4-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox.

                              - Pat Burrell and Chase Utley, Phillies. Burrell had a tiebreaking two-run double in the seventh inning and Utley hit his major league-best 20th homer in a 7-5 victory over Florida.

                              - Braden Looper, Cardinals, gave up three runs in 5 2-3 innings and had two singles, scored a run and added an RBI in a 7-4 victory over Pittsburgh.

                              - Johan Santana, Mets, gave up six hits and struck out six in 7 2-3 innings to earn his 100th win as New York beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-1.

                              - Ryan Braun and Russell Branyan, Brewers, each hit two-run homers in a 10-1 victory over Houston.

                              - Jack Cust and Mark Ellis, Athletics, homered in a nine-run seventh inning to rally Oakland to a 13-8 victory over Texas.

                              - Dan Haren and Orlando Hudson, Diamondbacks. Haren pitched seven sharp innings and Hudson hit a three-run homer in a 5-0 victory over Washington.

                              - Fred Lewis, Giants, hit a tying two-run triple in the 10th inning and scored the winning run on an infield single to rally San Francisco to a 4-3 win over San Diego.

                              ANOTHER FINAL AT-BAT WIN

The Angels' Howie Kendrick was hit by a pitch from Blue Jays closer B.J. Ryan with the bases loaded in the ninth inning to force home the tying run, and Maicer Izturis singled in the game-winner one pitch later to lift Los Angeles to a 4-3 win on Sunday. All four of the Angels' victories in their six-game homestand were walk-off wins.

                              STREAKS

Houston's 10-1 loss to Milwaukee on Sunday was the Astros' season-high fifth straight. ... The Cubs beat the reeling Rockies 5-3 on to complete a perfect seven-game homestand and send Colorado to its seventh straight loss. ... Kansas City's 6-1 victory over Cleveland on Sunday its second straight victory after a 12-game skid. ... Texas' Michael Young singled in the first inning of a 13-8 loss to Oakland, extending his hitting streak to 17 games. Rangers teammate Ian Kinsler stretched his career-best hitting streak to 16 games with a sixth-inning single.

                              SCARY

Minnesota pitcher Nick Blackburn escaped with just a bruised nose and upper lip after getting hit in the face by a line drive off the bat of the Yankees' Bobby Abreu in the fifth inning of the Twins' 5-1 win Sunday. Blackburn flung his arms out and flopped on the turf in front of the mound, but quickly rose to his feet and walked off the field on his own with a towel pressed to his face to keep the blood from spurting out of his nose. The impact was lessened because Blackburn bent backward to try to dodge the ball. It grazed off his glove before hitting the right side of his nose, which was bruised and swollen afterward. X-rays showed no broken bones.

                              BEATING SEATTLE

Placido Polanco hit a tiebreaking single and Detroit scored four times in the ninth inning off struggling J.J. Putz to lift Detroit to a 7-5 win over Seattle on Sunday. Magglio Ordonez and Miguel Cabrera each drove in two runs as the Tigers won for the fifth time in six meetings with the Mariners. Detroit has also fared well against the Yankees - winning four of five - but is 15-30 against everyone else.

                              BIG PAPI AILING

Red Sox slugger David Ortiz wasn't in the starting lineup for the Boston Red Sox on Sunday, and the designated hitter could only hope his injury was a minor setback. Ortiz sprained his left wrist in the ninth inning Saturday night while swinging at a pitch in Boston's 6-3 win over Baltimore. He left for a pinch hitter with the count full. Ortiz had missed only four games before Sunday. He is batting .252 and leads the Red Sox with 13 homers and 43 RBIs.

                              COMEBACK DELAYED

Padres pitcher Mark Prior will undergo season-ending surgery on his injured right shoulder, the latest medical setback to a once-promising career. Prior, one of the top young pitchers in the game for the Chicago Cubs just a few years ago, has not pitched in the majors since Aug. 10, 2006. He had been trying to make a comeback with his hometown Padres this season, but his rehab process was shut down at extended spring training about two weeks ago when he had more soreness in the shoulder. Prior, 27, had surgery on the same shoulder in April 2007 while with the Cubs.

                              CALLING IT A CAREER!

Former catcher Mike Lieberthal signed a one-day minor league contract Sunday and officially retired as a member of the Phillies. The 36-year-old Lieberthal spent 13 of his 14 years in the majors with the Phillies. He signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers last winter and played in only 38 games as a backup to Russell Martin, hitting .234 in 77 at-bats. Lieberthal threw out the ceremonial first pitch before the Phillies' 7-5 win over the Marlins at Citizens Bank Park and received a warm ovation from the fans. He hit .274 with 257 doubles, 150 home runs, 610 RBIs while playing in 1,212 career games.

                              STRONG STARTS

Johan Santana gave up six hits and struck out six in 7 2-3 innings to earn his 100th win as New York beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-1 on Sunday. ... Arizona's Dan Haren struck out five and limited Washington to four hits in seven innings of a 5-0 win. ... Brian Bannister yielded one run and five hits in 7 1-3 innings to lead Kansas City to a 6-1 victory over Cleveland. ... Milwaukee's Dave Bush gave up one run and four hits in seven innings of a 10-1 win over Houston. ... A.J. Burnett gave up two runs and three hits in eight innings of the Blue Jays' 4-3 loss to the Los Angeles Angels. ... Tim Lincecum allowed one run and four hits in seven innings of San Francisco's 4-3, 10-inning win over San Diego.

                              HITTING NO. 501

Manny Ramirez hit his 501st home run in Boston's 9-4 victory over Baltimore on Sunday. One day after becoming the 24th major leaguer to hit No. 500, Ramirez drove a 1-0 pitch from Brian Burres into the right-field seats to put Boston up 6-3 in the fourth inning.

                              STUCK AT 599

One day after hitting his 599th career homer, Ken Griffey Jr. remained stuck one shy of joining Barry Bonds, Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, Willie Mays and Sammy Sosa in the 600 club. Griffey went 2-for-3 with a double in the Reds' 6-2 win over Atlanta on Sunday in their final home game before an eight-game road trip.

                              SPEAKING

"It's all about having fun. You have to remember this is a game and you have to have fun.'' - The Mets' Johan Santana, after giving up six hits and striking out six to pick up his 100th career victory in New York's 6-1 win over Los Angeles on Sunday night.
