    Six-pack for Sunday

-- If you like college football, have to read a book, Dixieland Delight, about a season in the SEC. Good stuff.

-- Nine of 12 SEC teams made the college baseball tourney.

-- Brandon Webb blanked Washington 4-0 in 1:52 Saturday night in Phoenix. Snakes hit four solo homers off Bergmann.

-- They had 36,048 at The Trop Saturday, as Kazmir and five relievers blanked Chicago 2-0. Rays are still in first place.

-- Former Braves' pitching coach Leo Mazzone is doing TV work for FOX; the little we heard Saturday, he's pretty good.

-- Speaking of FOX, I actually watch less baseball because of them; they own exclusive rights on Saturday afternoons, so those of us who shell out $160 for the Extra Innings package don't get to watch any day games but a FOX game. Terrific.

Sunday's List of 13: Some college knowledge for a Sunday

To me, Memorial Day is the start of summer, and summer is a sign that college football is on the way. So I went and got me the Athlon College Football magazine. Here is some info that I grabbed from that fine publication, to pass on to you.........

      13) Florida State, for some strange reason, opens 2008 with a pair of I-AA opponents. Why is this? They couldn't find some bad I-A teams to play? Games against I-AA opponents should not count towards being eligible for a bowl game.

      12) Last weekend in August has a big schedule of games, with Alabama-Clemson, Oregon-Washington two of the headliners. Thats eight days before the first NFL Sunday.

      11) In the last seven seasons, Wake Forest has 19 TDs on INT returns; from 1956-2000, they had 17 TDs on INT returns.

      10) Florida ranked 12th in SEC in pass defense LY; opponents completed 58.4% of passes, good for 258.5 yards per game.

      9) Texas has only one senior on its 2-deep depth chart on the offensive line; Michigan doesn't have any. In fact, on entire
2-deep offensive depth chart, Michigan has only one senior.

      8) Arizona State had four wins last year in games they trailed in the second quarter by 10+ points- highly unusual.

      7) Auburn has had only one head coach in last decade, but in those ten years under Tuberville, they've had 10 coordinators.

      6) Tennessee allowed only four sacks LY on 534 pass attempts but now the offensive coordinator and QB are gone.

      5) North Carolina Tar Heels lost their last 21 games that were played outside the state of North Carolina; last win was 38-35 win at Arizona State in October, 2002. .

      4) Nebraska averaged 52.4 ppg in their last three games LY, but lost two of the three games, which is why the new head coach is a former defensive coordinator.

      3) Cincinnati was ranked in Top 25 last year for first time since way back in 1976.

      2) Maryland hasn't had a punt blocked in nine years; they go to Virginia Tech November 6- we'll see what happens then.

      1) Michigan State was 7-6 LY; all seven losses were by seven or less points- five of the wins were by 11+. Spartans could be a team that makes a big leap this season.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Yankees at Minnesota Twins [YES | 2:10 PM ET]

Yankees (-130, O/U 9): While he's only started four games, Darrell Rasner has surprisingly been the Yankees most effective pitcher in 2008. He's 3-1 with a sensational 1.80 ERA. In 25 innings pitched this season, Rasner has struck out 14 batters while allowing just 19 hits and five runs. Rasner has one career starts against Minnesota, getting the win after allowing one run in six innings of work. Three of Rasner's four starts have gone UNDER the total.

Yankees are 8-2 in their last 10 games overall.
Yankees are 20-6 in their last 26 Sunday games.

                  Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

Twins: Nick Blackburn has been solid for the Twins in 2008, going 4-3 with a 3.39 ERA. He's been exceptional at home this year, sporting a 2.41 ERA in five starts at the Metrodome. When Blackburn takes the hill, he usually gives the Twins a chance to win. Blackburn has given up four or fewer runs in eight starts this season. This will be Blackburn's first career appearance against the Yankees.

The OVER is 9-3 in Minnesota's last 12 games overall.

                  Key Injuries - NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Colorado Rockies at Chicago Cubs [WGN | 2:20 PM ET]

Rockies: Big things were expected from Rockies starter Ubaldo Jimenez this season but that hasn't been the case. Despite having good stuff, Jimenez is just 1-5 with a lofty 5.37 ERA. Colorado has lost nine of Jimenez's 10 starts and he hasn't recorded a win since his first outing of the year on April 8. Things won't get easier for Jimenez today against the Cubs, a team he has a career ERA of 8.31 against. Even though Jimenez hasn't pitched well, three of the last four games he's started have gone UNDER the total.

Rockies are 7-22 in their last 29 road games.

                  Key Injuries - NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Cubs (-175): Sean Gallagher will be making his fifth start of the season for the Cubs on Sunday but the good news is that he's been great in two of his last three outings. In wins over the Dodgers and Pirates, Gallagher gave up just two runs in 13.2 innings pitched. Gallagher has been really tough at Wrigley Field, where he possesses a 3.12 ERA in three home starts this year. Gallagher has faced the Rockies just once as a relief pitcher but was lit up for four runs in just 0.2 innings on the mound.

Cubs are 6-0 in their last 6 games overall.
Cubs are 14-2 in their last 16 home games.
The OVER is 7-1 in the last 8 meetings at Chicago.

                  Key Injuries - NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Los Angeles Dodgers at New York Mets [ESPN | 8:05 PM ET]

Dodgers: Hiroki Kuroda is just 2-4 on the season but he's pitched much better than his record indicates. Kuroda has allowed three or fewer runs in six starts this year but hasn't received much run support. He pitched against the Mets earlier this season but didn't have a successful outing, getting pulled in the fourth inning after allowing eight hits and four runs. Kuroda has uneven numbers on the road. He's just 1-4 away from home, even though he has a strong 2.82 road ERA.

The UNDER is 12-3 in LA's last 15 Sunday games.
The UNDER is 9-2 in LA's last 11 games overall.

                  Key Injuries - NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 2

Mets (-165, O/U 8): Mets ace Johan Santana has won three of his last four starts, although he hasn't been dominating in any of those outings. In his last 27.2 innings of work, Santana has allowed 37 hits and 14 runs. Santana has actually been much better on the road than he has been at home in 2008. In four starts at Shea Stadium, Santana has an ERA of 4.26, compared to 2.96 on the road. Santana has one career start versus the Dodgers, getting the win after recording nine strikeouts and blanking LA over seven innings.

Mets are 6-2 in the last 8 meetings at New York.

Hot Lines: Sunday's best MLB bets
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York at Minnesota (+110, 9)

When Nick Blackburn takes the hill for the Twins today, everybody in Minnesota's bullpen will just be hoping he can stay out there for a while. Yesterday the Twins had to empty their pen, using all seven relievers in a marathon 12-inning, 7-6 loss to the Yankees.

"We've gone through some pitchers," closer Joe Nathan told the Pioneer Press. "We were facing guys who could give them the lead with one swing of the bat. So we were giving them different looks and just hoping we could scratch one across."

"We used 'em all," pitching coach Rick Anderson added. "We'll have to put a couple of starters out there (today) just in case."

It's not the best situation to be in against a Yankees club that is just starting to get their bats going. They're hitting .307 over their last 10 games.

                        Pick: Yankees

                        Toronto at L.A. Angels (-105, 8)

Although Los Angeles managed to squeak past the Jays 3-2 in extra innings on Saturday, runs have been hard to come by for the Angels. They're hitting just .209 over the last 10 games - all but one of which played under. Toronto knows that story all too well.

The Blue Jays have struggled to produce timely hits all season and are only starting to find some offensive rhythm now. Still, it comes and goes. They put up 22 runs over a two-game outburst against Oakland and then these Angels, only to come up dry again yesterday when their pitching really could have used some help.

                        Pick: Jays

                            - Josh Hamilton, Rangers, pushed his major league-leading RBI total to 61 with a two-run homer and a run-scoring groundout in an 8-4 win over the Athletics.

                            500 IN THE BOOKS

Manny Ramirez hit career homer No. 500, a drive off Baltimore right-hander Chad Bradford to become the 24th major leaguer to reach the milestone. Ramirez drove the first pitch into the seats in right-center in the seventh inning. It made Ramirez only the seventh player in baseball history with 500 homers, 1,500 RBIs, 1,000 walks, 475 doubles and a .300 batting average. The others are Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Mel Ott, Babe Ruth, Frank Thomas and Ted Williams.

                            HERE COMES 600

Ken Griffey Jr. hit his 599th career homer to help the Cincinnati Reds beat the Atlanta Braves 8-7 in 10 innings. With his next homer, Griffey will join Barry Bonds, Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, Willie Mays and Sammy Sosa at 600. He'll have one more chance in his hometown-the series concludes on Sunday-before an eight-game road trip.

                            RED HOT

Jay Bruce extended his amazing weeklong debut with a 10th-inning homer that lifted the Cincinnati Reds to an 8-7 victory over the Atlanta Braves. It was the first big league homer for Bruce, who is 11-for-19 in his first five games in the majors. The Reds' top prospect has a pair of three-hit games and a four-hit game.

                            TIGERS TAMED

Felix Hernandez combined with relievers Brandon Morrow and J.J. Putz to limit Detroit to two hits in the Mariners' 5-0 victory. The big-budget Tigers have been shut out a major league-leading nine times, three times their total from last year.

                            CHOPPED DOWN

The Braves fell to 0-5 in extra innings this season and 2-16 in one-run games overall, after the Reds beat Atlanta 8-7 in 10 innings. The Braves have one of the NL's best home records at 22-7, offset by their worst road mark at 7-20. Atlanta has lost its last 20 one-run games on the road since August, matching the second-longest such streak in major league history.

                            ROYAL WIN

Kansas City snapped a 12-game losing streak with a 4-2 victory over C.C. Sabathia and the Indians. The losing streak, begun with a no-hitter by Boston's Jon Lester, was the longest in the majors since Kansas City and Pittsburgh had 13-game slides in 2006. While going almost two weeks without a win, KC had allowed three grand slams, coughed up a five-run lead in the ninth inning of one game and scored three or fewer runs in nine others.

                            BIG PAPI AILING

Red Sox slugger David Ortiz left a game against Baltimore in the ninth inning after injuring his left hand. Ortiz, who was 2-for-3 with his 13th home run, a sacrifice fly and two RBIs, apparently injured the hand while fouling off a 3-1 pitch from Dennis Sarfate.

                            SPEAKING

"What a remarkable story Jay Bruce is. I've never seen a better story. If he's living a dream, I'd like to be in that dream."-Reds manager Dusty Baker, whose 21-year-old rookie hit the game-winning homer in the 10th inning of an 8-7 win over Atlanta. Bruce is 11-for-19 in his first five games in the majors.
