          2008 NHL playoffs

Penguins try to even Stanley Cup Finals in Game 4 at home; for third straight game, they were shorthanded more than Detroit, but allowed just one power play goal in 9:51 shorthanded. Will be interesting to see how Wings come out in Game 5 after they got punched in face for first time in series Wednesday. Pitt has yet to lose at home in playoffs (8-0) while Detroit is 5-4 on road this playoff season.

Ice picks: Saturday's best NHL bet

              Detroit vs. Pittsburgh (-115, 5)

And suddenly, we have a series.

For the second straight contest, the series-underdog Penguins are favored to win a game in the Stanley Cup finals. The odds come after Sidney Crosby led the Pens with two goals in a 3-2 victory over Detroit in Game 3 Wednesday night.

The Red Wings now take a 2-1 series lead into Game 4 at Mellon Arena, where the Pens are 9-0 in the playoffs and where nobody has been able to beat them since San Jose did it in a shootout back on Feb. 24. That’s an incredible home undefeated streak of 17 games.

On the other side of things, Detroit is in an unfamiliar situation. The veteran Red Wings are at risk of losing consecutive games in a Stanley Cup final for the first time since 1995 when they lost in four straight to the Devils.

Detroit hopes it can avoid that fate by carrying the momentum of a late third period goal by Johan Franzen in Game 3. Franzen missed Game 1 and most of the Western final due to concussion symptoms. But it appears as though the Wings have the sniper back to himself, the same one who leads the playoffs in goals with 13 and the guy who racked up nine goals in four games in the Colorado series.

Detroit will also need to find a way to overcome the adjustments Pittsburgh made in Game 3. The Penguins were less aggressive on their forecheck and hung back when the Red Wings gained control of the puck in their own end. Detroit ended up turning the puck over more in the neutral zone, something Pittsburgh coach Michel Therrien talked about improving on before the game.

The Red Wings still managed to outshoot the Pens for the third straight game, 34-24, but they didn’t get as many quality scoring chances. Still, Game 3 saw five goals combined, the most in the series. Initially oddsmakers opened this series by setting the total at 5 ½ goals for the first two games, but that number has since dropped.

Evgeni Malkin is doing his part to keep totals low, which has to be a concern for Pittsburgh. He has no points in this series and has made little impact. Marian Hossa, the team’s leading goal scorer in the playoffs, also has yet to score, though he did chip in with two assists last game.

Both teams took the day off on Thursday to rest up before Saturday so we should see a fast-paced, hard-hitting game.

              Pick: Red Wings +110

                Stanley Cup Gameday

After a two-day break the Red Wings and Penguins return to the ice for Game 4 of the Stanley Cup final on Saturday night, with Detroit holding a 2-1 series lead.

Pittsburgh finally got on the board in the series with a desperately needed 3-2 victory as a -120 favorite. After getting shut out in the first two games of the series, Pittsburgh’s usually potent offense finally woke up at home. Sidney Crosby got things started with a pair of goals, while Adam Hall netted what turned out to be the eventual game-winner. Marian Hossa delivered a pair of assists, but Evgeni Malkin was held off the scoresheet again and managed only three shots on goal.

Detroit’s Johan Franzen proved he hadn’t lost his scoring touch after missing six games, with his playoff-leading 13th goal in the loss. Mikael Samuelsson also scored for Detroit, while the Red Wings' two top scorers, Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk were both held pointless for only the third time in these playoffs.

Even though Crosby netted a pair of goals for the Pens on Wednesday night, the MVP of the game was actually goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury. Fleury faced a barrage of 34 shots from Detroit and made 32 big saves in the victory. Detroit’s Chris Osgood faced 24 shots and made 21 saves. The veteran Osgood has now allowed more than two goals only four times during Detroit’s playoff run.

Pittsburgh should like their chances of tying up the series on Saturday night and the Vegas oddsmakers agree after setting them as a -120 favorite in the game. After winning on Wednesday night, the Penguins remained perfect at home in the postseason with a 9-0 record. When you include the regular season, Pittsburgh has now won 17 straight games at Mellon Arena.

The total for Game 4 opened at 5, the same number which was used for Game 3. The total for the first two games of the series was set at 5.5, but after two Unders the oddsmakers dropped it to 5 making Game 4 a push for total bettors.

Los Angeles Dodgers at New York Mets [FOX | 3:55 PM ET]

Dodgers (-115, O/U 8.5): Chad Billingsley is only 4-6 on the year but he's pitched well over the last month. Billingsley has won four of his last six starts while giving up just 10 runs in 38 innings pitched over that span. Billingsley is 2-3 on the road this season but he does posses a solid 3.68 ERA away from home. The last five games Billingsley has started went under the total and that includes a win over the Mets on May 5. In that game Billingsley pitched six strong innings, giving up just five hits and one run.

Dodgers are 9-19 in their last 28 Saturday games.
The UNDER is 8-2 in LA's last 10 games overall.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Mets: Mike Pelfrey is in a freefall right now, losing six consecutive starts. Over that span, Pelfrey has given up five or more runs four times. Pelfrey has a WHIP of 1.78 in 2008 thanks to 24 walks compared to only 23 strikeouts. Pelfrey has been particularly inept in his last two starts, where he gave up 12 runs in just eight innings pitched. Being at home won't help Pelfrey end his slump. He's lost his last four decisions at Shea Stadium.

Mets are 5-16 in Pelfrey's last 21 starts.
The OVER is 11-3-1 in New York's last 15 home games.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Detroit Tigers at Seattle Mariners [FOX | 3:55 PM ET]

Tigers: Things haven't gone well for Justin Verlander in 2008. He's recorded only one win and the Tigers have won just two of Verlander's 10 starts overall this season. Even though he's struggled for much of the year, one bright note is Verlander's most impressive outings have been in his last three starts. Over that span, Verlander gave up just four runs in 19 innings of work. Verlander must be happy to see the Mariners. He's a perfect 5-0 with a 2.43 ERA in five career starts against Seattle.

Tigers are 8-3 in the last 11 meetings at Seattle.
Tigers are 3-10 in their last 13 road games.
The UNDER is 7-1-1 in Detroit's last 9 Saturday games.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 3 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

Mariners (-115, O/U 8.5): Felix Hernandez has lost five of his last six starts and hasn't recorded a win since April 16. The problem for Hernandez is he's been putting too many runners on base. In his last 22.2 innings pitched, Hernandez has given up 14 walks. Being at home hasn't been much help to Hernandez in 2008. In seven starts at Safeco Field, he's just 1-3 with a 4.08 ERA. Even though he's had a disappointing season so far, nine of Hernandez' 10 starts have gone UNDER the total.

Mariners are 7-21 in their last 28 games overall.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Atlanta Braves at Cincinnati Reds [FOX | 3:55 PM ET]

Braves (-140, O/U 10): Jair Jurrjens may not be a household name quite yet but you can bet hitters in the National League know who he is. Jurrjens is 5-3 with an impressive 2.86 ERA on the season. In his 10 starts, Jurrjens has allowed more than three runs just once. While Jurrjens is experiencing a breakout year, he's been much more effective at home than on the road. All three of his losses have come away from Turner Field and Jurrjens' ERA jumps from 2.06 to 3.77 on the road.

Braves are 7-21 in their last 28 road games.
The UNDER is 23-5-1 in Atlanta's last 29 road games.
The UNDER is 11-3-1 in Atlanta's last 15 games as a favorite.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 7 (Side Play of the Day)

Reds: Matt Belisle has been batting practice for much of the 2008 season. He's given up 47 hits and 27 runs in 29.2 innings pitched. The Reds bullpen will most likely be on call today, considering that Belisle has only gotten out of the fifth inning once this year. Belisle has started one game at home this year and it wasn't pretty. He gave up 12 hits and seven runs in just four innings of work against the Dodgers. Not surprisingly, five of Belisle's six starts have gone OVER the total.

Reds are 10-1 in their last 11 home games.
The UNDER is 9-3-1 in Cincinnati's last 13 Saturday games.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 3

New York Yankees at Minnesota Twins [YES | 7:10 PM ET]

Yankees (-160, O/U 8.5): New York's Chien-Ming Wang will try to earn his first win in five starts and stay perfect against the Twins. Wang is 2-0 lifetime vs. Minnesota with a stellar 1.71 ERA, but he has not earned a victory since beating Seattle back on May 2nd. The Yankees snapped a three-game skid with him on the mound last time out against the Mariners on Sunday, but he walked away with a no-decision after giving up five runs and seven hits in 6.1 innings of an eventual 6-5 victory.

Yankees are 7-2 in their last 9 games as a favorite.
The UNDER is 6-2 in New York's last 8 Saturday games.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Twins: Minnesota's Boof Bonser will try to beat the Yankees for the first time in his career after going 0-2 with a 9.31 ERA in his previous two starts against them. Bonser has also struggled mightily at home this season, going 1-4 with a 6.22 ERA. He is coming off a horrific performance at Detroit last Saturday in which he surrendered nine runs and seven hits in three innings of a 19-3 loss.

The OVER is 8-3 in Minnesota's last 11 games overall.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Toronto Blue Jays at Los Angeles Angels [9:05 PM ET]

Blue Jays: Toronto's Shaun Marcum faces the Angels for the second time in three starts after giving up four runs and four hits to them in 6.2 innings of a 4-3 loss back on May 21st. That was Marcum's first loss to LA after going 2-0 in his previous two starts. He rebounded from that loss by allowing only one run and five hits to the Royals in 7.1 innings of a 7-2 victory on Monday.

Blue Jays are 8-1 in their last 9 games overall.
Blue Jays are 9-2 in their last 11 road games.
Blue Jays are 7-2 in their last 9 Saturday games.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Angels (-135, O/U 7.5): John Lackey's only win in three starts this season came against the Blue Jays on May 20th. Lackey gave up just one run and seven hits in seven innings of a 3-1 victory, and he has been a victim of poor run support otherwise. In his other two starts, the Angels have totaled three runs, which were not enough to overcome the four runs he surrendered in those games.

The UNDER is 10-1-1 in LA's last 12 Saturday games.
The UNDER is 22-7 in LA's last 29 games overall.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 4

                            STARS

-Grady Sizemore, Indians, homered twice and drove in three runs, then made a catch at the wall with two outs in the ninth inning to preserve a 5-4 victory over Kansas City.

-Russell Martin, Dodgers, went 4-for-4 with a homer and a double, driving in three runs and scoring three more in a 9-5 win over the Mets.

-Todd Wellemeyer, Cardinals, gave up six hits and a run over seven innings in a 5-4 victory over Pittsburgh that moved his record to 6-1 on the season.

-Ryan Braun, Brewers, went 4-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs in a 5-1 victory over Houston.

-Jay Bruce, Reds, was 4-for-5 and scored the winning run in the 11th inning for a 3-2 victory over the Braves.

-Jim Edmonds, Cubs, homered as part of his three hits, driving in three runs and scoring twice more in a 10-9 victory over the Rockies.

-Adrian Beltre, Mariners, hit a pair of solo homers in a 7-4 loss to the Tigers.

                            ROYAL SKID

Kansas City lost its 12th straight, this time blowing a 4-1 lead in a 5-4 loss to the Indians. It's the longest losing streak in the majors since Pittsburgh lost 13 straight in June 2006, though the Royals also lost 13 in a row in May of that year.

                            JUST LIKE WADE

Rangers rookie outfielder Brandon Boggs, no relation to Hall of Famer Wade Boggs, filled in admirably on short notice for Milton Bradley. Boggs had two doubles and matched a career high with three RBIs in the Texas' 3-1 victory over Oakland.

                            O'S NO!

Baltimore committed three errors in the 13th inning, and the Red Sox turned the miscues into a 5-2 victory. The bumbling began when catcher Ramon Hernandez dropped a foul popup. David Ortiz was retired anyway, and Manny Ramirez followed with a one-out bouncer to third. Melvin Mora's throw soared over the head of first baseman Kevin Millar, and Mike Lowell drove him in with a single to left. Two more unearned runs scored on a throwing error by Freddie Bynum.

                            HEADED TO DL

Daisuke Matsuzaka was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday by the Red Sox, who opted to take a cautious approach after an MRI exam revealed a mild strain of his right rotator cuff. ... Travis Hafner was sent home after taking practice swings before the Indians played at Kansas City. The Cleveland DH will be placed on the 15-day disabled list with a sore right shoulder.

                            TRIPLE THE FUN

The Giants turned a triple play in the eighth inning against the Padres, the second in the majors this year. Pitcher Keiichi Yabu had just entered with runners on first and second and got Kevin Kouzmanoff to ground into the Giants' first triple play since June 14, 1999, on his first pitch. Third baseman Jose Castillo fielded the hard grounder near the bag and retired Brian Giles on the forceout, then relayed to second baseman Ray Durham to get Adrian Gonzalez. Durham then fired the ball to first baseman John Bowker for the third out.

                            COLD WINTERS NIGHT

It was a tough night for third base umpire Mike Winters in Los Angeles. He had Angels manager Mike Scioscia and Blue Jays manager John Gibbons both in his face on close plays an inning apart involving baserunners he called safe - both of whom eventually scored.

                            SPEAKING

"Anytime you lose it doesn't sit with you very well. But obviously if you're going to get beat in this game, you'd rather have them beat you and not have it happen the way it did.'' -Orioles manager Dave Trembley, whose team went more than 4 1/2 hours without scoring before the Red Sox tacked on three runs in the 13th inning for a 5-2 victory. The runs were all unearned after three Baltimore errors.
