    Six-pack for Thursday

-- How relieved was Gary Bettman when Penguins won Game 3, eliminating chance for a Red Wings' sweep? NHL needs a long series to captilaze on momentum it has in TV ratings.

-- Royals lost 10th game in row when they blew ninth inning 8-3 lead, then lost at home in extra innings to Twins. Ugh.

-- Five west coast teams that played at home last night went 1-4, getting outscored 26-11. A Mariners' 1-0 win vs Boston was the only home team win in the five games.

-- Rockies have already started six second basemen this year.

-- Nine of Cody Ross' last eleven hits have been home runs.

-- The last time a major league hit .400 for the season was in 1941; Chipper Jones is hitting .418 right now.

Thursday's List of 13: Runnin' the bases in the NL..........

Diamondbacks— Stumbling for first time this season, at 2-7 in last nine games; hot Big Unit tries to stop skid Thursday.

Braves— Horrible on road (6-18 on road, 22-7 at home)- teams that make the playoffs win more than 25% of their road games.

Cubs— Zambrano threw 130 pitches Wednesday; be careful or else what seems to be inevitable spot in playoffs might not be so automatic.

Reds— Won last nine home games, have hope with arrival of hot prospect Bruce, but Reds are 9-19 on foreign soil. Wonder if the GM and Dusty had meeting about four starting pitchers throwing in same game Sunday out in San Diego.

Rockies— Have had rotten week running bases; it was Smith Tuesday in Philly, last night Spilborghs; you play young guys and stuff like that is going to happen- they have lot of subs in.

Marlins— Dan Uggla had .135 career batting average at Shea Stadium, going into Wednesday's game, lowest of any regular in the major leagues.

Astros— Look at their starting pitchers and tell me how they're six games over .500. Even Oswalt has been mediocre. So far, a terrific managing job being done by Cecil Cooper.

Dodgers— Streaky as hell; right now, they're not scoring runs as Joe Torre returns to New York Thursday. Wasted a super effort by Lowe Wednesday, losing 2-1 in 10 at Wrigley.

Brewers— Playing better, winning four of last five, but just a terribly unsettled defensive team. Bringing Russell Branyan to the majors to play third was not a positive sign.

Metropolitans— Other than Wright and Reyes, who has this farm system produced that is any good? Bad luck with Church suffering from concussion, but this is a very mediocre team.

Phillies— They score runs in bunches and Howard isn't hot yet; their pitching scares no one. Are 15-5 in last twenty games that went over the total, 8-11 in last nineteen unders.

Pirates— Doug Mientkiewicz at third? At least Jack Wilson is back in lineup, to help the defense. Doumit's broken thumb is hurting the offense. Snell and Duke have been disappointing.

Cardinals— Getting lot from Skip Schumaker in center; under is 20-14 in their last 34 games. Pineiro is on DL because he got hurt shagging flies during batting practice last week. Terrific.

Padres— Peavy might be back soon, but Young's injuries are going to keep him out for while; starting pitcher finished sixth inning in just six of last 16 games. Tough year for Bud Black.

Giants— Bochy has been stretching out starting pitchers to avoid using his shaky bullpen (starters threw average of 104 pitches a game last two weeks); he better not burn them out.

Nationals— Starting pitcher finished sixth inning in nine of the last 22 games, which puts lot of strain on an ordinary bullpen. This catcher Flores they have seems like he might be real deal.

Major League Baseball - Tips & Trends

            MLB

            Thursday, May 29

We will update when projected scores are available.

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
            Tips and Trends
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Dodgers at New York Mets [7:10 PM ET]

Dodgers: It would be an understatement to say Brad Penny has pitched poorly in his previous four outings. In Penny's last 23.2 innings of work, he's given up an unfathomable 24 runs. That's not what Joe Torre is looking for from the ace of his staff. In large part due to Penny's struggles, seven of the 10 games he's started have gone over the total. Penny has been average on the road this season, going 2-2 with a 5.09 ERA in four starts away from home. He has been torched by the Mets in his career, going 5-12 with a 6.21 ERA in 20 starts. In his most recent outing against New York earlier this year, Penny was pulled in the fourth inning after he gave up 10 runs on 10 hits.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Mets (-115, O/U 8.5): Claudio Vargas has pitched well in three starts for the Mets this year. Despite going 1-2, Vargas has a solid 3.93 ERA. In 18.1 innings pitched, Vargas has only allowed eight runs and has given the Mets a chance to win every time he's taken the mound. Vargas lost his one home start against the Nationals but pitched well, giving up just two runs in 6.1 innings of work. Two of Vargas' three starts in 2008 have gone under the total.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Chicago White Sox at Tampa Bay Rays [7:10 PM ET]

White Sox: John Danks is 3-4 on the season but he could have a much more impressive record with some run support. Danks has a strong 3.00 ERA on the year but in three games where he didn't wind up on the winning side the White Sox only scored three runs. As a matter of fact, in his 10 starts this season, Danks has only given up over two runs twice and shut out opponents on three separate occasions. The UNDER is a goldmine with Danks on the hill, cashing in eight of his 10 starts this season.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Rays (-130, O/U 8.5): The Rays have won three of Edwin Jackson's last four starts, although he's factored in only of the decisions. In those four outings, Jackson has only allowed four runs in 25.1 innings of work. Overall this year, Jackson has allowed one run or less a remarkable six times. Even though Jackson has dominated in his last four starts, two of those games went OVER the total thanks to the Rays offense scoring 19 runs.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

San Francisco Giants at Arizona Diamondbacks [9:40 PM ET] | Full Matchup

Giants: For the first time this season, Barry Zito is coming off a win. After the Giants lost nine consecutive games Zito started, he finally broke the streak and got a win his last time out over Florida. Zito pitched well in that game, giving up only three hits and one run in 6.1 innings on the mound. That's really been the only bright spot for Zito in 2008. He's been awful on the road, going 1-4 with a 5.40 ERA. Amazingly, six of the games Zito has started this year have come in UNDER the total.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Diamondbacks (-200, O/U 9): Randy Johnson had won three games in a row before dropping a tough decision to the Braves his last time out, despite giving up just one run in six innings pitched. As usual, the Big Unit has been strikeout machine, fanning 47 batters over 44.2 innings. Johnson is 3-1 at home but he's benefited from strong run support to offset his 5.86 ERA at Bank One Ballpark. Five of Johnson's eight starts have gone OVER the total but his last two easily went under with a combined 10 runs scored.

            PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

            Key Injuries - NONE

                  NBA Games

Lakers grabbed control of series when Fisher's bump of Barry on last play of game went uncalled, much like Horry's hipcheck of Nash wasn't called vs Suns last year. Now Spurs have need two wins on Staples court where Lakers are 7-0 at home so far in playoffs. Weird thing about this series? Bryant is 48-90 from floor in series, 5-6 from line; he averaged double digit attempts from charity stripe in Utah series. Lakers held Spurs under 41% from floor in three of four games, including both at Staples.

San Antonio Spurs at Los Angeles Lakers [ESPN | 8:30 PM]

Spurs: San Antonio seems to be on the verge of losing the Western Conference Finals after Tuesday's disappointing 93-91 home loss in Game 4. Whether or not the Spurs can play with the hearts of a champion in Game 5 remains to be seen after what happened at the end of Game 4 when referee Joey Crawford failed to call a foul on a potential game-winning 3-pointer by Brent Barry in the final seconds. Still, San Antonio head coach Gregg Popovich took the blown call in stride and believes his team should not have let the game come down to that. "If I was the official, I wouldn’t have called that a foul," Popovich said. It has been an uphill battle for the defending NBA champs in this series since they blew a 20-point lead in Game 1 at the same place their season may end on Thursday - Staples Center.

Spurs are 3-9 ATS in their last 12 road games.
The UNDER is 11-5 in San Antonio's last 16 Thursday games.

                      Key Injuries - NONE

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 93

Lakers (-8, O/U 193.5): LA head coach Phil Jackson is very confident that his team will close out the Spurs at home in Game 5 after how well they played on the road in Game 4. But he also said the Lakers will need to play with the same sense of urgency in trying to end the series in their first attempt. “They certainly can’t rely on home court,” Jackson said of the Spurs. "They’re going to have to go out and play a ballgame. It’s important we come out there and play a similar type of game that we played (Tuesday night in Game 4), with the kind of energy that we had. That will win the ballgame for us."

Lakers are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 home games.
Lakers are 11-4-1 ATS in their last 16 games overall.

                      Key Injuries - NONE

                            San Antonio vs. Lakers (-8, 193 1/2)

The Lakers have a simple plan when it comes to winning in these playoffs and it's all about the fundamentals.

                            Box out. Play tough defense.

                            And pass it to Kobe.

The reigning league MVP was sensational again in Game 4 when Bryant poured in 28 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in a 93-91 Lakers win. Los Angeles now leads the series 3-1 as it heads back to the Staples Center, where the Lakers are 50-10 at home since moving there in the 1999-2000 season.

Stopping Bryant, or at least slowing him a little, will be a huge key for the Spurs in Game 5. Twenty-two points is the lowest total he's had through four games and that came when the Lakers didn't really need him to light it up in a 30-point victory in Game 2.

Other than Bryant, the other major story in this series is defense. All four games have fallen under the posted total and there has been a measly average of 179.2 points per game.

The Spurs always play defensive ball, but it's the other end of the floor where they're having trouble. They've seen the under in their last eight games and they've managed to score at least 90 points only three times during that span.

San Antonio's top starters Tim Duncan and Tony Parker have been doing the job, but it's the other players who need to start chipping in. Starters Fabricio Oberto and Michael Finley were held pointless last game.

That will need to change in a hurry if the Spurs want to avoid elimination. San Antonio couldn't score more than 85 points in its three most recent trips to the Staples Center and it's likely going to take more than that to beat Los Angeles on its home court.

Despite the low-scoring trends, oddsmakers still have this total posted at a relatively high 193 1/2.

                            Pick: under
