      2008 NHL playoffs

Good time to be a Detroit sports fan; Red Wings are team with more experience than Penguins, but Pittsburgh is 12-2 so far in playoffs, on one of greatest runs in playoff history- the games they lost in playoffs both came with Pens leading the series 3-0. Red Wings won 12 of 16 playoff games, seven of eight on the home ice. Both teams are well-rested. Wings allowed 20 goals in their last dozen games.

          Saturday NHL Playoff Gameday

Detroit is the place to be Saturday night, as the Stanley Cup final gets underway between the Red Wings and Penguins, while in the NBA the Eastern Conference final resumes with Game 3 between the Celtics and Pistons.

Pittsburgh Penguins at Detroit Red Wings – 8 pm EDT

Both the Red Wings and Penguins will be well-rested heading into Game 1. The Wings haven’t played since knocking off Dallas in six games on Monday, while the Pens had an extra day off, having eliminated Philadelphia in five games last Sunday.

This series could see a ton of goals, as the Top 5 playoff scoring leaders will all be taking part. Sidney Crosby and Henrik Zetterberg lead their respective teams with 21 points each, while Marian Hossa, Evgeni Malkin and Pavel Datsyuk have all collected 19 points so far. Playoff goal-scoring leader Johan Franzen is also expected to suit up in this series, although he is out for Game 1. Franzen has missed the Wings’ last five games with concussion-like symptoms, but he still leads all playoff scorers with 12 goals.

The only thing that could possibly keep the goals down in this series are the goaltenders. Both Chris Osgood and Marc-Andre Fleury have been stellar in nets throughout the postseason. Osgood leads all starting goaltenders with a 1.60 goals-against average in the playoffs, while Fleury checks in right behind him at 1.70. Fleury is just ahead of Osgood in save percentage at .938, with Osgood next at .931.

One category where Detroit is light years ahead of Pittsburgh is playoff experience. The Red Wings have 10 players who have lifted the Cup before, with a number of them having done it numerous times. Pittsburgh has three former Cup winners on their roster, with only Darryl Sydor owning more than one ring. Gary Roberts is another Penguin with a Cup ring, but neither he nor Detroit veteran Chris Chelios will play in Game 1 of the series.

The opening odds for Game 1 list Detroit as a -165 home favorite, while Pittsburgh is a +145 underdog.

                            Boston at Detroit

How can you not fade the Boston Celtics on the road?

Let's just review a few statistics, shall we? Since the beginning of the playoffs, Boston is 0-6 straight-up and ATS on the road. This fine Celtics defense, that allowed opponents to score an average of fewer than 90 points through the season, is allowing an average of 95.3 points on the road and has given up more than 100 in three of the six road games. Their offense is also way down to 85.8 points per game after averaging nearly 100 this season.

After Boston's Game 2 loss to Detroit, Kevin Garnett looked despondent, hanging his head at the press conference and speaking with a weak voice. The Celtics will need KG to put up a fight against Rasheed Wallace if they have any hope of winning Game 3, but the Big Ticket looks like he's given up on the series already.

The Pistons didn't just wear out KG in Game 2; they wore out the whole Celtics team. They did it with impressive balance and depth, showing that while Boston is centered around the "Big Three", the Pistons have six or seven players who all contribute. Six players scored at least 13 points on Thursday, frustrating the Celtics and taking advantage of their weaknesses.

"What makes Detroit good is you can't really hone in on one guy," Rivers said. "Obviously in the two previous series we've had LeBron and Joe Johnson. Even though they had players around them, clearly they were the focal points.
"Where on this (team), Rip is probably No. 1 ... but Chauncey (Billups), Tayshaun Prince, Rasheed Wallace, (Antonio) McDyess have been terrific, and now, if you add (Rodney) Stuckey into the mix, they have five for-sures and six guys on certain nights that they can go to."

Detroit will take advantage of that depth and balance again - and their home-court advantage - to take the lead in this series.

                            Pick: Pistons

                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                              Arizona at Atlanta (-110, 9)

                              Who is Jorge Campillo?

Well, he's a 30-year old right-hander who's made only two career starts, but his last one was a win over the New York Mets in which he threw six scoreless innings and got the win. The veteran of the Mexican minor leagues says the win gave him his confidence back, but pitching against the Diamondbacks on three days' rest might send his confidence right back south again.

The D-Backs are the fourth best offensive team in the majors this season, with 252 runs produced in 48 games. Their 52 home runs are also among the best in the bigs and .440 slugging percentage is enough to give even the most experienced pitcher a touch of anxiety.

Arizona will give the ball to Randy Johnson, who's had his ups and downs this year, but he's coming off his best start of the season. The Big Unit pitched seven scoreless innings, walking one and striking out five, to get a 4-0 win over Detroit May 18. He's also pitched shutouts in his last two meetings with Atlanta.

                              Pick: Diamondbacks
