Ice picks: Sunday's best NHL bets
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Philadelphia at Pittsburgh (-260, 5 1/2)

Word has been leaking out of the Flyers dressing room since Friday evening that Kimmo Timonen could be back for this game. The All-Star defenseman has been out with a blood clot in his ankle for the entire series, but now there's legitimate hope that he could be back on the ice Sunday.

"At least now I know there's no danger," the 33-year-old Timonen said Friday after skating on his own for 35 minutes. "It's just a matter of how much pain I can take. It takes only 15 minutes to skate, and I can't feel my toes. That is the biggest thing. When that happens, the pain comes in, but I'm sure we've got some medicine for pain."

Timonen could be a huge difference-maker in this series. The Flyers learned in their Game 4 win that a little aggression and physical play could turn the series in their favor and the skilled Penguins players like Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin can be thrown off their games if harassed. Physical play is Timonen's specialty and even if he doesn't play major minutes, his presence could be huge for Philadelphia.

On top of that, the other edge for Philly tonight is the play of Martin Biron. The veteran goaltender was brilliant in Game 4, stopping 36 shots - many in spectacular fashion. If Biron continues playing that well, the Flyers could make this a very profitable win for bettors.

    Pick: Flyers

Pick 'n' Roll: Sunday's best NBA bets
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Cleveland at Boston (-8, 175)

There's been a lot of talk about home-court advantage in these playoffs and considering the results, all the talk is justified. But in Game 7 it's time to put up or shut up. It's time to face the pressure and answer the call - something neither team in this series has been able to do particularly well.

LeBron James is in the midst of his worst shooting performance ever, but the Cavaliers still managed to take the conference powerhouse to seven games. Why? Because the Big Three haven't been big at all. Ray Allen might as well not be on the floor at all, Kevin Garnett has struggled against the defensive pressure applied by Anderson Varejao and Ben Wallace, and Paul Pierce can't seem to hit a jumper.

After a brilliant season, suddenly it is becoming painfully evident that these guys are all woefully short on playoff experience. It was thought that their career-long playoff droughts might inspire them in this postseason, but there hasn't been much fire or ferocity from them on the floor. They almost allowed themselves get ejected from the playoffs by the No. 8 seed in the first round and now, all it would take is a monster game from LeBron James to give Bostonians their worst day since Bill Buckner booted that grounder.

Would anyone be surprised to see LeBron go off tonight?

      Pick: Cavaliers

Hot Lines: Sunday's best MLB bets
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Bay at St. Louis (-110, 8 1/2)

As of now, it looks like Kyle Lohse will make his scheduled start today after a sore throwing shoulder had his outing in question earlier in the week.

Lohse, who hasn't missed a big league start in eight years, skipped a bullpen session on Thursday. The sore shoulder may have something to do with a nasty slump the right-hander is going through. Lohse has allowed 19 runs over his last three starts.

"I've just been a little sore the last couple of starts," Lohse told reporters. "We're just taking precautions to make sure it doesn't get any worse.

"It's in the back of the shoulder. I don't think it's too big of a deal - not this big of a deal. I'm going to (start)."

              Pick: Tampa Bay

              Detroit at Arizona (-135, 10)

Well, the Big Unit had to start showing his age at some point. Randy Johnson has allowed 14 earned runs over his last three starts, but Arizona won all three with some solid run support for the veteran.

"I've been grinding through it and actually, at this stage of my career, I think that's something that I'm pretty proud of I guess, because I never would have thought about it before," Johnson told the team's official Web site. "At 44, I enjoy battling, but at times I have to do a lot more and it becomes a little more frustrating at times."

His durability and stamina are also fading. Johnson hasn't pitched more than six innings in a start this year.

              Pick: Detroit

Pittsburgh Pirates at Chicago Cubs [WGN | 2:20 PM ET]

Pirates: Phil Dumatrait will be making his fourth start of the season on Sunday, going 1-1 in his previous three. Dumatrait was used primarily as a relief pitcher before cracking the Pirates starting rotation in early May. Dumatrait has pitched well in his last two starts, giving up just three runs in 11.2 innings of work. In five career appearances against the Cubs, Dumatrait has an ERA of 7.36.

Pirates are 9-3 in their last 12 games overall.
Pirates are 9-23 in their last 32 road games.

                      Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

Cubs (-170, O/U 9.5): Jason Marquis is back on the rubber for the Cubs after getting blasted in his last three starts. Marquis has given up 26 hits and 14 runs in his last 16 innings of work. He's only made it through 6.0 innings in two of his seven starts on the year. Marquis has started 15 games against the Pirates over his career, going 6-5 with an ERA of 4.04. Despite his struggles, the UNDER has cashed in each of Marquis' last two starts.

Cubs are 11-2 in the last 13 meetings.
Cubs are 7-2 in their last 9 home games.

                      Key Injuries - NONE

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 6

Los Angeles Dodgers at Los Angeles Angels [3:35 PM ET]

Dodgers: After winning four straight decisions, Brad Penny was rocked in his last two starts by the Mets and Brewers. Penny has given up a ridiculous 19 hits and 15 runs in his last 10.2 innings pitched. The Angels aren't the team Penny wants to see when he's trying to get back on track. In five career starts versus Anaheim, Penny is just 1-3 with a 4.99 ERA. Penny tends to pitch in high scoring affairs, with six of his nine starts going OVER the total.

Dodgers are 9-3 in their last 12 games following a win.
Dodgers are 8-3 in their last 11 road games..

                      Key Injuries - NONE

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Angels (-125, O/U 9):: Jered Weaver has been a monumental disappointment for the Angels in 2008. Expected to be Anaheim's ace, Weaver has struggled to a 2-5 record to go along with his 4.86 ERA. The Angels have only won three of Weaver's nine starts, although six of those contests went under the total. One bright spot for Weaver is he's coming off his best performance of the season, getting the win after pitching 7.0 scoreless innings against the White Sox. Weaver has owned the Dodgers going 2-0 with a dominating 1.50 ERA in his two starts versus LA.

Angels are 8-2 in the last 10 meetings.
Angels are 3-7 in their last 8 games overall.
The UNDER is 9-2 in the Angels' last 11 games following a loss.

                      Key Injuries - NONE

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 5

St. Louis at San Diego (10:05 p.m.) The Cardinals send their newfound ace, Todd Wellemeyer, to the mound against San Diego ace Jake Peavy. Wellemeyer (4-1, 3.27 ERA) has won his last two decisions, while Peavy (4-3, 2.91) has dropped his last two.

                        STARS
                        Saturday

                        - Alfonso Soriano, Cubs, went 5-for-5 with two homers, a double and three RBIs in a 7-6 loss to Pittsburgh. Soriano also scored three times.

                        - Ryan Ludwick, Cardinals, homered twice and drove in three runs to help St. Louis beat Tampa Bay, 9-8.

                        - Daisuke Matsuzaka, Red Sox, went 6 2/3 innings and scattered seven hits and a pair of walks in a 5-3 win over Milwaukee. He walked two and both runs he allowed were unearned.

                        - Nick Markakis, Orioles, homered and drove in three runs in a 6-5 victory over Washington.

                        - Rod Barajas, Blue Jays, homered twice and drove in five runs against his former team, helping Toronto to a 6-3 victory over Philadelphia.

                        - Mike Jacobs, Marlins, homered, tripled and drove in three runs in his return to the lineup, helping Florida snap a four-game skid with a 7-3 win over Kansas City.

                        STREAKS SNAPPED

Mike Jacobs homered and drove in five runs against Kansas City, helping the Marlins snap a four-game losing streak. The win also ended the Royals’ five-game winning streak, their longest since last June. They also failed in a bid to reach .500, instead falling to 20-22.

Jack Cust hit a solo home run and Ryan Sweeney added a three-run shot to help Oakland end a season-worst four-game skid with a 5-4 win in Atlanta. The loss snapped the Braves' eight- game home winning streak.

                        WINLESS

Andy Pettitte allowed three runs in six innings in the Yankees' 7-4 loss to the Mets, falling to 0-4 in his last five starts- his longest skid since May 2003. It was his first loss to the Mets at Yankee Stadium since June 16, 1997.

                        BOO BIRDS BEDEVILED

Rod Barajas gave Philadelphia fans another reason to boo him: He hit two homers, one of them a grand slam, in the Blue Jays' 6-3 victory over the Phillies. Barajas drew the ire of Phillies fans last year when he failed to crouch low enough to block the plate, allowing Hanley Ramirez to slide underneath him with the tying run in the ninth inning of a game at Florida on May 23. Barajas was jeered the rest of the season and didn't get an offer to return after one year.

                        NOTE THE OBSCURE

Astros switch-hitting slugger Lance Berkman extended his hitting streak to 16 games and matched Pete Rose as the only players since 1956 with 31 hits in a span of 50 at-bats. After his major league-best 16th homer leading off the fourth inning against Texas, Berkman had a single in the sixth that matched Rose's 31-of-50 stretch for Philadelphia in 1979. Berkman popped out to end the eighth, but finished 2-for-3 with a walk to raise his season average to .399.

                        DUBIOUS DISTINCTION

Barry Zito became the first Giants pitcher to open a season with eight straight losses since 1890 when San Francisco lost 3-1 to the White Sox. Zito (0-8) worked five innings and gave up only two runs in matching Jesse Burkett's record. Zito allowed eight hits and a season-high six walks and struck out four Saturday.

                        SOME STARTERS

Fausto Carmona allowed one run and four hits in 7 1/3 innings for Cleveland, which has four shutouts in its past eight games. Indians starters have been nearly untouchable, allowing only four earned runs in their past 59 1-3 innings. The Indians lost 4-2 to the Reds Saturday.

                        SANTANA STINGS YANKS

Johan Santana gave the Yankees a firsthand look at what they turned down last winter. The two-time Cy Young Award winner pitched efficiently into the eighth inning, and the Mets got home runs from Jose Reyes and David Wright to top the Yankees 7-4. Santana was pursued by the Yankees in the offseason, but they decided to keep the young pitchers that Minnesota wanted.

                        SPEAKING

"I had a lot of fun. I'm very happy where I am right now." -Mets starter Johan Santana, who pitched efficiently into the eighth inning in a 7-4 victory over the Yankees. The Yankees had pursued the left-hander in the offseason, then backed out rather than trading pitching prospects Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy to the Twins.
