        Wednesday NHL Playoff Gameday

Detroit Red Wings at Dallas Stars, 8:00pm ET

The Stars impressed with series victories over the Ducks and the Sharks in the first two rounds of the playoffs, but it looks like they've met their match with the Red Wings in the Western Conference final. Detroit cruised to 4-1 and 2-1 victories at home in the first two games of this seven-game set, and they pushed their series advantage to 3-0 with a 5-2 road win on Monday. Pavel Datsyuk had a hat trick for the Wings in that win, while Henrik Zetterberg and Jiri Hudler had the team's other goals. Brad Richards and Nicklas Grossman scored for the Stars. Detroit forward Johan Franzen (head) and Dallas forwards Jere Lehtinen (leg) and Stu Barnes (head) all sat out Monday with their injuries.

The oddsmakers are looking for the Red Wings to pull off a sweep in Game 4 - they were listed as -165 favorites on the contest's early line. The total for the game was at 5.

Pick 'n' Roll: Wednesday's best NBA bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

          Cleveland at Boston (-8 1/2, 176 1/2)

LeBron James may still be having a tough time hitting from 20 feet, but he sure didn't mind throwing down a massive dunk on Kevin Garnett's face to seal a Game 4 victory to knot this series at two games apiece.

The only thing with that play is that it may motivate the Celtics more heading into Game 5. Like they need it. Boston has won and covered all of its home games so far in the postseason.

For whatever reason, these Celtics look like a completely different group away from The Garden. They don't attack or defend with the same intensity at all, almost looking complacent at times as the game slowly gets away from them. Now the Cavs have life and should be a handful for the C's even if they're on their home floor.

          Pick: Cavs

          Utah at Los Angeles (-8 1/2, 213 1/2)

Kobe Bryant insists he'll play Wednesday even though his bad back wouldn't allow him to sit for Game 4's post-game news conference on Sunday. It’s hard to doubt him after he's overcome injury issues so many times before and the extra day of rest will make a big difference.

Still, you have to wonder how L.A. would respond of Kobe tweaks his back in the first quarter and has to sit for a while. Utah has all the momentum knowing it is headed back home for at least one more game, maybe the series-deciding game if the Jazz can score the upset on enemy soil.

          Pick: Jazz

Ice picks: Wednesday's best NHL bets
            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            Detroit vs. Dallas (+150, 5)

When the Red Wings scored their second goal of Game 3 Tuesday night, you could almost feel the life get sucked out of the Stars.

Dallas had just scored 37 seconds earlier to tie the game at 1-1 late in the first period and the Stars fanatics went bananas after the Nicklas Grossman goal. You could almost sense a feeling in the arena that Dallas just might have a chance in this series after all.

The Pavel Datsyuk response at 15:50 of the first period erased those hopes as quickly as they had arisen and Detroit never really lost control of the game after that. The Wings went on to a 5-2 victory and they now lead the series 3-0.

The Stars are left wondering just what it takes to beat this team. They just might have blown the one advantage they had in Games 3 and 4 - home ice - and Detroit is looking practically unbeatable.

The Red Wings are now on a nine-game playoff winning streak, two shy of the NHL record.

It doesn't look good for the Stars' chances of halting that streak. Captain and team spark plug Brendan Morrow will be playing with a hurting arm at best after leaving Game 3 with a shoulder injury. If he's not at full strength, Dallas isn't far from hanging the skates up for the summer.

            Pick: Detroit -170

The Jazz have found a way to exploit LA's defense, averaging over 112 points over the last three games, which is not a good sign for the Lakers entering tonight's contest with a 16-19 ATS mark after allowing 105 points or more. Hot Lines: Wednesday's best MLB bets
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Toronto at Minnesota (+123, 7 1/2)

You have to feel sorry for Roy Halladay. The poor fella would probably be a Cy Young candidate on any other team, but with the Blue Jays, he's just a candidate for anger management counseling. But you can't blame him for being frustrated because it seems like every time he pitches a gem, the Jays' offense doesn't back him up. In his eight starts this season, he's getting an average of 2.75 runs in support.

And the frustration is starting to show. Halladay has built a reputation as a workhouse and he's already pitched two complete games this season, but in recent games, he's been trying to do too much. He's striking out more batters, but his last two starts have been his shortest of the season. In his last start, Halladay lasted only six innings, gave up four earned runs and walked three batters - all bad numbers for him.

He'll be up against Minnesota's Boof Bonser, who has given up 11 earned runs in his last two starts and is 0-2 against the Blue Jays.

                    Pick: Over

San Diego at Chicago Cubs (-114, no total yet)

The Cubs are almost unbeatable at home this season. They took a loss to San Diego at Wrigley yesterday, but overall the Cubs are 15-7 in the Friendly Confines and they've lost only two series there this season.

Don't pay any mind to Ted Lilly's ERA. His last start was outstanding as he pitched seven strong innings against the Diamondbacks and held baseball's best hitting team to three hits and one earned run over seven innings. Lilly got off to a rough start this season, but he's turned the corner and there's great value in this guy right now if you look at his last four outings in which he has a 2.42 ERA and is 3-1. The lefty also has a perfect 3-0 career mark against the Padres.

The Cubs will have a tough test against San Diego's Jake Peavy (and bettors should take a long look at the under when this total comes out) but the Padres' road record (7-15) is discouraging and they haven't given Peavy much in the way of run support in recent starts.

                    Pick: Cubs

Atlanta Braves at Philadelphia Phillies [ESPN | 7:05 PM ET]

Braves: Atlanta can't be thrilled to see Tom Glavine take the mound. The Braves have lost five of Glavine's six starts on the season, while Glavine himself is 0-1 with five no-decisions. Despite the Braves lack of success when Glavine takes the hill, he's only given up more than two runs on one occasion this year. The veteran has seen a lot of the Phillies over his career, going 28-17 with a 3.68 ERA in 64 starts.

Braves are 5-17 in their last 22 road games.
The UNDER is 17-5 in Atlanta's last 22 games as an underdog.

                                Key Injuries - NONE

                                PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Phillies (-150, O/U 10): Brett Myers has been inconsistent in 2008 but he has fared much better at home. In four starts at Citizens Bank Park, Myers is 2-0 with a respectable 3.00 ERA. Myers has been a horse for the Phillies, pitching into the fifth inning in every start this season. However, he's been susceptible to the long ball, giving up 12 home runs in 49.0 innings pitched. Myers has 17 career starts versus the Braves, compiling a 4-6 record, although Atlanta hitters are only batting .210 against him.

                                Key Injuries - NONE

New York Yankees at Tampa Bay Rays [7:10 PM ET]

Yankees: Mike Mussina is one of the hottest pitchers in baseball right now. Moose has won his last four decisions, allowing just eight runs over 23.0 innings. In his four-game winning streak, Mussina only walked two batters, while striking out 13. Mussina has displayed tremendous control all year, walking a total of just five batters in 2008. Moose has dominated the Rays, going 17-5 with a 3.44 ERA in 30 career starts.

                                Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 4 (Side Play of the Day)

Rays (-140, O/U 8.5): James Shields has been a beast over the last month, going 3-1, with two of those wins being complete game shutouts against the Red Sox and Angels. Shields mixed in a poor outing versus Boston in between his two gems, but he's pitching as well as he has at any point in his career right now. Shields must be cringing at the thought of facing the Yankees. He's 0-5 in his career against the Bombers with a robust 7.83 ERA.

Rays are 12-1 in their last 13 home games.
The UNDER is 9-1 in Tampa Bay's last 10 home games.

                                Key Injuries - NONE

San Diego Padres at Chicago Cubs [8:05 PM ET]

Padres: Padres ace Jake Peavy takes the mound along with his 4-2 record and 2.47 ERA. Peavy has been tough in all of his outings this year, giving up more than three runs just once in eight starts. Peavy is 2-0 on the road this season but he's a bit more hittable away from home. His ERA jumps to 4.58 and teams are hitting .302 against Peavy in three road starts. Peavy has been a headache for the Cubs, sporting a 2-0 record and 2.10 ERA in five career starts.

                                Key Injuries - NONE

                                PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Cubs (-115, O/U 8): After a horrendous start to the season, Ted Lilly has righted the ship recently. He's 3-1 in his last four starts, after going 0-3 in his first four appearances. In Lilly's last 26.0 innings, Lilly he's only given up seven runs, while recording 25 strikeouts. Lilly is money versus San Diego over his career, going 3-0 with a 2.19 ERA and 0.93 WHIP.

Colorado Rockies at Arizona Diamondbacks [9:40 PM ET]

Rockies: After getting blasted in his first start of the season, Jorge De La Rosa bounced back with a strong outing against the Cardinals. De La Rosa got the win over St. Louis after allowing just two runs in 5.2 innings of work. In De La Rosa's two starts this year, teams are averaging a combined 15 runs per game, with each contest easily going over the total.

Rockies are 2-9 in their last 11 road games.
Rockies are 2-8 in their last 10 games as an underdog.

                                Key Injuries - NONE

Diamondbacks (-165, O/U 10): The emergence Micah Owings has given Arizona arguably the top pitching staff in MLB. However, despite his 4-1 record, Owings hasn't pitched well of late. The Diamondbacks have lost the last three games Owings has started after he's given up 15 runs in 17.2 innings of work. By comparison, in Owings first 26.0 innings pitched this season, he only gave up seven runs.

Diamondbacks are 26-11 in their last 37 home games.
