            NHL set for conference finals

Philadelphia Flyers at Pittsburgh Penguins (Starts Friday)

The Flyers lost Game 1 of their second-round series with the Canadiens, but they then stormed back with four straight victories to take the best-of-seven set 4-1. Philadelphia finished off Montreal with a 6-4 victory in Game 5 on Saturday night, with Scottie Upshall scoring the game-winning goal late in the third period. R.J. Umberger scored twice for Philly in that contest, while Mike Richards, Scott Hartnell, and Mike Knuble added singles. Martin Biron stopped 31 of 35 Montreal shots on the night. Daniel Briere was held pointless on Saturday, but he leads the team with 14 points in 12 playoff contests. Umberger has a team-high nine goals, and Biron is 8-4 with a GAA of 2.72.

The Penguins finished off the Rangers with a 3-2 overtime victory on Sunday afternoon, with Marian Hossa scoring the series-clinching goal. Hossa actually picked up two goals in that contest, with Evgeni Malkin tallying the other Pittsburgh marker. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 20 of 22 New York shots in the win. The Penguins had won seven straight postseason games before losing Game 4 of their second-round set to the Rangers on Thursday night, but Sunday's win gave them a 4-1 series victory. Malkin and Crosby have each picked up 14 points in nine playoff games for the Penguins, with Malkin scoring a team-high six goals. Fleury is now 8-1 with a 1.76 GAA in the playoffs.

The Flyers were huge 85/1 underdogs to win this year's Stanley Cup on the opening line, but knocking out both the Capitals and the Canadiens has moved those odds to 9/2. The Penguins opened with 14/1 championship odds in Vegas, and are now at 9/5.

                    L.A. Lakers at Utah (-4, 215 1/2)

How much does home-court advantage mean to the Utah Jazz? A ton, that's why they're favored in this spot after the Lakers ran them all over the court out on the West Coast.

Utah lost just five games at the EnergySolutions Arena all year, something the Lakers are well aware of.

"The crowd sits on top of the floor," Los Angeles coach Phil Jackson told reporters. "It's as noisy as anyplace you've ever been in. That energizes the team, and it intimidates the referees that go in there and referee the game. It's a tough environment to win in."

That environment should help the Jazz get out of the gate better after the club went into halftime trailing by double-digits in both of the first two games of the series. Whether that will be enough to slow down Los Angeles' showtime routine is another question all together.

                    Pick: Los Angeles

                      Philadelphia at Pittsburgh (-175, 5 1/2)

Want to know the scariest thing about Pittsburgh's 4-1 dismantling of the highly-touted New York Rangers? Sidney Crosby didn't score. Sure, he played fine and contributed six assists in the series, but he has a lot more to prove and a matchup with the Flyers may be just what he needs to break out.

Sid the Kid has 16 goals and 21 assists in only 20 career games against Philadelphia. Plus, after all the foolishness that went down between these two teams near the end of the regular season, Pittsburgh's big guns will need to make a statement early. The Flyers are a tough team that isn't any fun to play against, but their nastiness could get them in real trouble if they don't keep it in check.

Pittsburgh's powerplay was a threat to score every time it was on the ice against the Rangers and we should see much of the same in this series.

                      Pick: Pittsburgh

Hot Lines: Friday's best MLB bets
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Arizona at Chicago Cubs (-110, no total)

This might be the best value you're likely to see all season. The D-Backs haven't put together back-to-back wins for a while, but they still have a better record than the Cubs, they have the better starting pitcher in this matchup in Dan Haren, their bullpen is by far superior to the Cubs', and they're on a hot hitting streak (.294 over last 10 games).

The only thing working against Arizona in this matchup is the venue. The Cubs are 11-6 at Wrigley this year and they're hitting .315 in those games. But that shouldn't keep bettors away from the Diamondbacks, considering they had no trouble winning in the Windy City last season. They were 7-2 against the Cubs in 2007, including 3-1 at Wrigley.

                          Pick: Diamondbacks

                          Oakland at Texas (-105, 10)

The Rangers are on a hot streak, but don't let a 7-3 record over the last 10 games influence you too much in your handicapping of this game. This club is coming off a tough road trip that had them in Oakland and then Seattle. They played a tough game in Seattle Thursday night, which didn't get underway until 10:10 p.m. ET and included a bench-clearing brawl and an injury to Michael Young. The Rangers flew back to Arlington after Thursday night's game to prepare for today's 8:00 p.m. ET start.

The situation doesn't seem to favor the Rangers. They are 6-8 at home this season and 4-8 in the first game of a new series and just 1-4 in that situation after a win. The A's are 10-5 on the road and 8-5 in Game 1's.

                          Pick: A's

Arizona Diamondbacks at Chicago Cubs [WGN | 2:20 PM ET]

Diamondbacks: Dan Haren has been a great addition to the Diamondbacks rotation, going 4-1 with a 3.12 ERA on the year. Control has been the name of the game for Haren, who has only given up 8 walks over 43 1/3 innings. Despite his impressive numbers, 5 of the 7 games Haren has started this year have gone OVER the total.

Diamondbacks are 6-2 in their last 8 games as an underdog.
Diamondbacks are 8-3 in their last 11 road games.

                                Key Injuries - NONE

                                PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Cubs (-120, O/U 8): Ted Lilly has struggled overall in 2008, but he's pitched better of late, winning 2 of his last 3 starts, and the loss was a 2-0 defeat to the Nationals. In his last 19 innings pitched, Lilly has given up a total of 6 runs. In his previous 17.5 innings of work, Lilly was blasted for 19 runs. Lilly is 0-2 in his career against Arizona, although he does have a respectable 3.38 ERA.
Cubs are 10-3 in their last 13 home games.

The UNDER is 10-1-2 in Chicago's last 13 Friday games.
The UNDER is 7-1 in the last 8 meetings.

New York Yankees at Detroit Tigers [7:05 PM ET]

Yankees: Kei Igawa makes his first start of the season after going 2-3 with a 6.25 ERA in 2007. With Phil Hughes on the DL and Ian Kennedy sent back down to the minors, the Yankees are hoping Igawa can add some much-needed stability to their pitching staff. This will be Igawa's first career appearance against the Tigers.

Yankees are 2-6 in their last 8 Friday games.

                                Key Injuries - NONE

                                PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Tigers (-135, O/U 10): Kenny Rogers hasn't been great this season, but Detroit has won 3 of his last 4 starts. One of those wins came against the Yankees thanks to Rogers allowing only two runs in 6 innings pitched. The problem for Rogers this season has been control. He has the same number of walks (19) as he does strikeouts in 37 1/3 innings of work.

Tigers are 7-2 in Rogers' last 9 Friday starts.
The UNDER is 7-3 in Detroit's last 10 Friday games.

                                Key Injuries - NONE

St. Louis Cardinals at Milwaukee Brewers [8:05 PM ET]

Cardinals: Todd Wellemeyer has been solid for the Cardinals this year. He's 3-1 on the season, and the Red Birds have won 4 of Wellemeyer's 7 starts. Wellemeyer has been much tougher at home, where he's 3-1. He had 3 relief appearances against Milwaukee in 2005, but this will be the first time he's faced the Brew Crew as a starter.

Cardinals are 10-4 in the last 14 meetings.
Cardinals are 13-5 in Wellemeyer's last 18 starts.

                                Key Injuries - NONE

                                PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Brewers (-125, O/U 9): Big things were expected of Manny Para this season, but so far he's been a disappointment, sporting a record of 1-2 and 5.86 ERA. Para's outings have been short ones. The longest he's lasted is 5 1/3 innings, which is a major reason why 3 of his 6 starts have resulted in no-decisions. Para hasn't won a game since April 5th against the Giants, a 5-4 victory in his first start.

Brewers are 0-6 in their last 6 games overall.
The UNDER is 6-2 in Milwaukee's last 8 games as a favorite.

Colorado Rockies at San Diego Padres [10:05 PM ET]

Rockies: Aaron Cook has been the stopper for team this season, but he won't have to end a skid this time around. The Rockies have won his last 6 starts, and he has allowed 3 runs or less each time out to pick up all 5 of his wins during that stretch. Three of those starts have come on the road, and the UNDER has cashed in his last 4 overall.

Rockies are 7-1 in the last 8 meetings.
Rockies are 5-13 in their last 18 games overall.

                                Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 2 (Total Play of the Day - UNDER)

Padres (-140, O/U 6.5): San Diego ace Jake Peavy (4-1, 2.22 ERA) is coming off his first win in 4 starts, earning a 7-2 victory at Florida last time out on Saturday. The Padres have lost in his last 2 home starts by identical 2-1 scores. One of those losses was the epic 22-inning battle with Colorado back on April 17th in which he pitched 8 scoreless innings with 3 walks and 11 strikeouts. Peavy is just 4-4 lifetime against the Rockies with a 4.05 ERA in 14 starts.

Padres are 1-7 in their last 8 games as a favorite.
Padres are 7-20 in their last 27 games on grass
