Hot Lines: Sunday's best MLB bets
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    L.A. Dodgers at Colorado (-120, 9 1/2)

It usually takes a team a while to figure itself out when a new manager comes in to take charge of the club, especially if that guy is Joe Torre. But after a rocky start, it seems as though Torre has his Dodgers on the right track now. They've won eight straight heading into today's matchup with the Rockies and are pounding the cover off the ball even though their big offseason signing, Andruw Jones, is still struggling with a terrible .163 batting average and just one dinger.

This is a great price on a Derek Lowe start too. He's held each of his last seven opponents to three or fewer runs.

    Pick: Dodgers

    San Francisco at Philadelphia (-180, 7 1/2)

If you're ever going to bet on the San Francicso Giants, you'd better make sure Tim Lincecum is on the hill. He suffered his first loss of the year in his last outing - a three-run, seven-inning effort against the Rockies - but he hadn't allowed a run over his two starts that preceded that one.

Lincecum has already earned more than three units for bettors on the year as he gets ready to share the mound with Cole Hamels today. Hamels rebounded in his last outing with a win after two rough starts, but it's hard to look past Lincecum as the underdog.

    Pick: Giants

Good morning, Spark! Everything's going very well. Thanks for asking!

PM attended a "retired military" seminar yesterday. I'm anxious to hear what he learned!

I didn't stay in long enough to retire but, maybe, he learned something we can steal and use!!

Pick 'n' Roll: Sunday's best NBA bets
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Atlanta at Boston (-14 1/2, 190)

Game 7? It still seems a bit strange to think this series went the distance after Boston dominated the first two games, but Atlanta has it going and the Celtics look shaky, especially as 14 1/2-point favorites in a winner-take-all.

On home court, Boston just needs to avoid the big offensive and defensive lapses that have helped Atlanta back into the series. The Celtics should get it done to move on, but this is a huge line for a Game 7.

                    Pick: Hawks

                    Utah at L.A. Lakers (-7 1/2, 213)

It could be a Showtime afternoon in L.A. today when Kobe Bryant and the Lakers get back on the court for the first time since disposing of Denver in four straight games.

The rest should be good for the team and Bryant, who will reportedly be named the league's MVP later this week, should be ready to put on a show.

"That's what you've got to think about now: Do you play for Kobe, do you play for everybody else, do you try to balance," Utah's Kyle Korver told reporters. "That's what we've got to figure out, and we'll probably figure it out as the series goes on."

                    Pick: Lakers

                      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                      N.Y. Rangers at Pittsburgh (-165, 5)

Down 3-1 in the series and heading back to Pittsburgh, everybody has already written off Jaromir Jagr and the Rangers. But be careful with this game, because New York will come out swinging and Jagr means business in his old stomping ground.

The Rangers finally got to the Penguins in Game 4, rattling superstars Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby in a decisive 3-0 win. If they can do that again today and avoid the foolish penalties they took at the beginning of the series, this one could easily be heading back to the Big Apple for Game 6 tomorrow.

                      Pick: Rangers

San Jose at Dallas (-145, 5)

Uh-oh. The San Jose Sharks might have woken up and it's not a moment too soon. Evgeni Nabokov has been spotty at best throughout this series, but looked to get his confidence back over the last two games.

San Jose needs him to be at the top of his game, otherwise Dallas will jump all over them early. Expect a tight-checking, defensive matchup.

                      Pick: under

                        SCOREBOARD

                        Sunday, May 4
Tampa Bay at Boston (1:35 p.m.) Two teams fighting for control of the AL East get together when Boston plays—no, not the Yankees—surprising Tampa Bay. Scott Kazmir makes his debut for the Rays against Jon Lester.

                        STARS

                        Saturday
                        — Cristian Guzman, Nationals, went 4-for-5 and matched a career high with six RBIs, and Washington held off Pittsburgh 9-8.

                        — Johnny Damon, Yankees, homered and doubled twice—his first game with three extra-base hits since Aug. 19, 2006, at Boston—in New York’s 6-1 win over Seattle.

                        — Augie Ojeda, Diamondbacks, starting in place of the injured Orlando Hudson, drove in a career-high six runs in Arizona’s 10-4 win over New York.

                        — James Loney, Dodgers, homered and drove in six runs and Los Angeles beat Colorado 12-7 to extend its winning streak to eight.

                        — Adrian Gonzalez, Padres, went 3-for-5 with his seventh homer of the year to help San Diego beat Florida 7-2.

                        PICK SIX

Cristian Guzman of the Nationals and Augie Ojeda of the Diamondbacks set career highs with six RBIs apiece. James Loney of the Dodgers also had six RBIs in Los Angeles’ 12-7 win at Colorado, but it wasn’t a career high. Loney hit two home runs and drove in nine runs at Colorado on Sept. 28, 2006.

                        LUCKY SEVEN

Arizona’s Brandon Webb gave up a season-high four runs in six innings, but got help from his offense in a 10-4 win over the Mets. Webb (7-0) became the majors’ first seven-game winner, and matched Randy Johnson in 2000 for the fastest start by a Diamondbacks pitcher.

                        CRAZY EIGHTS

The Dodgers extended their winning streak to eight games with a 12-7 rout of Colorado. Five of the wins have come against the Rockies, who essentially ended the Dodgers’ playoff hopes last September by winning the last seven meetings between the teams.

                        NEW KILLER B’S?

Pitcher Brandon Backe and leadoff hitter Michael Bourn hit consecutive home runs in a five-run fifth inning in Houston’s 6-2 win over Milwaukee. Backe and Bourn—not exactly the Astros’ vaunted “Killer B’s”—came in with five career home runs combined in 316 at-bats.

                        VOICES CARRY

After a 6-1 loss to the Yankees, Mariners manager John McLaren dressed down his team with a screaming tirade that could be heard outside Seattle’s clubhouse. The slumping Mariners have lost four in a row, managing only seven runs during that stretch, and eight of 10 overall. They fell to 6-11 on the road and made two more errors after committing four in the first three innings of Friday night’s 5-1 loss. “We’re doing a lot of things we can’t do. One is not fielding. One is not making the pitch when we have to. It’s just something you can’t do. That’s not winning baseball,” McLaren said. “We can’t hit for them. It’s up to them. We put them out there. If they can’t hit, we’ll look for other options.”

                        REDEEMED

Giants closer Brian Wilson didn’t have to wait long for a chance to protect a one-run lead. A night after allowing a two-run homer to Pat Burrell with two outs in the bottom of the 10th, Wilson retired three straight after walking Burrell in a 3-2, 10-inning win over the Phillies. It was Wilson’s 10th save in 12 chances.

                        SNAPPED

White Sox outfielder Jermaine Dye ended an 0-for-15 skid with a home run in the seventh inning of a 5-2 loss to Toronto. It snapped a streak of 24 2-3 consecutive scoreless innings by Blue Jays pitchers.

                        AILING

Angels INF Chone Figgins hurt his right hamstring while scoring an insurance run in the eighth inning of a 3-1 win over the Orioles and had to leave the game. He was to have an MRI after the game. … Twins starter Scott Baker left after three innings against the Tigers because of a right groin injury. It was the same injury that forced him to leave a start against Texas a week earlier. He will be evaluated on Sunday. … Red Sox outfielder Brandon Moss had an appendectomy at Massachusetts General Hospital, one day after hitting a solo homer to spark a victory. … Giants starter Matt Cain gave up two runs and three hits, striking out a season-high eight in seven-plus innings against the Phillies, before leaving with a tight right hamstring. He expects to be ready for his next start.

                        SPEAKING

“Everything he said, he hit the nail right on the head. We’re not playing well and we have to pick it up.”—Mariners left fielder Raul Ibanez after manager John McLaren’s tirade could be heard outside the clubhouse following a 6-1 loss to the Yankees.

                        SEASONS

1910—The Browns and Cardinals played home games in St. Louis, and President Taft, not wanting to offend either club, saw parts of each game at Robinson Field and Sportsman’s Park.

1944—Blacks were allowed to buy grandstand seats for the first time in St. Louis history. St. Louis was the last of the major league clubs to integrate seating. They had been restricted to the bleachers.

1963—Bob Shaw of the Braves set a major league record by committing five balks. In the third inning, Shaw walked Billy Williams and balked him home with three straight balks. Shaw lasted five innings before he was ejected for arguing. The Chicago Cubs beat Milwaukee, 5-3.

1969—The Houston Astros set an NL record by turning seven double plays against the San Francisco Giants. First baseman Curt Blefry participated in all seven.

1975—Bob Watson of the Houston Astros, sensing baseball history, raced around the bases on Milt May’s home run and crossed the plate at Candlestick Park in time to score major league baseball’s 1 millionth run, seconds ahead of Dave Concepcion of Cincinnati.

1981—New York’s Ron Davis struck out eight consecutive Angels in relief as the Yankees defeated California 4-2.

1989—Toronto’s Junior Felix became the 53rd player in major league history to hit a home run in his first at-bat with a third-inning drive off California’s Kirk McCaskill as the Blue Jays lost 3-2 in 10 innings.

1991—Chris James drove in nine runs with two homers and two singles, breaking Cleveland’s club record for RBIs and leading the Indians to a 20-6 victory over the Oakland Athletics.

1996—The Texas Rangers became the first American League team in 79 years to pitch consecutive one-hitters as Roger Pavlik held Detroit to a fifth-inning home run in a 3-1 win. Ken Hill one-hit Detroit on May 3, retiring the last 26 batters he faced.

2001—Raul Mondesi of the Blue Jays went 4-for-4, with two homers, two doubles and six RBIs, leading Toronto to an 8-3 victory over Seattle.
