    Philadelphia vs. Montreal (-165, 5 1/2)

There is a story in Friday's Montreal Gazette about how Montreal Canadiens fans have given up faith of their team's chances for moving on in the playoffs. That's about right for the Habs. No fans love their team more when they win and none hate their team as much when they lose.

It's been three straight losses for Montreal now and they trail Philly 3-1 in their series. But even though Canadiens supporters are starting to lose hope, oddsmakers haven't. The Canadiens are lofty faves in Game 5 and the odds appear to be moving up. Several books moved the line to -170 and higher after it opened at -165.

Goalie controversy is the biggest concern in Montreal right now with both Carey Price and Jaroslav Halak playing questionably. Halak was named the starter for Game 4 to the surprise of some and he allowed three goals on 25 shots.

Philadelphia is just overall outplaying Montreal, especially early on in games. The Flyers have held a 2-0 lead in all four games of the series so far and that's been killing the Habs despite some strong third periods.

Montreal should be able to get off to a better start in Game 5 with the home crowd back on its side. Don't be surprised to see Carey Price back in goal and - just a hunch - we might see his strongest game of the series yet.

    Pick: under 5 1/2

Hot Lines: Saturday's best MLB bets
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Cubs at St. Louis (-106, 9)

The debate is raging in Chicago about whether Alfonso Soriano should be batting leadoff for the Cubs. While Soriano was on the DL last week, the Cubs on-base percentage soared, prompting renewed arguments for Kosuke Fukudome and his .455 on-base percentage to take over the top spot in the order.

Lou Pinella says he's not going to take Soriano out of the leadoff spot because "he likes it", but Soriano has been struggling since coming off the DL. In spite of a three-run homer in yesterday's loss to St. Louis, Soriano is just 1-for-6 in his two games back in the lineup and the Cubs are 0-2.

You can't blame Soriano for the losses, but judging by the way the Cubs scored runs while Soriano was out, it wouldn't hurt for Pinella to shake things up a bit - especially because his club has lost six of its last eight.

              Pick: Cardinals

              Texas at Oakland (-160, 9)

The Rangers were forced to recall A.J. Murray from Triple-A to replace the injured Jason Jennings, and Murray will get the start today against Oakland. The left-hander has been excellent in Triple-A, earning a 2.25 ERA in his last three starts, but don't forget how bad this kid looked in spring training

Murray finished the spring with a 10.80 ERA and it was unanimous among coaches that he need more time in the minors to develop into a reliable starter. One month isn't exactly the time frame they had in mind and it wouldn't be surprising to see Murray struggle today.

And if he does struggle, there won't be anyone there to bail him out. The Texas bullpen has the worst ERA in the major leagues and it has been even worse than usual in recent games, with a 9.00 ERA over their last 10 games.

              Pick: Oakland

                      2008 NHL playoffs
Montreal tries to stay alive after losing last three games to the Flyers, who were outshot 38-26 in Game 3, but killed off 8:00 on Canadiens' power play. Six of Montreal's ten goals in this series came in third period. Coach Carbonneau is whining about the officials- he must forget he won game against Bruins on power play goal in OT, so it goes both ways. Four of last five in series went over the total. Before winning Game 2 in this series, Philly had lost seven in a row against Montreal.

Saturday's List of 13: Random facts on a rainy day.......

                                13) Three of the four NL playoffs teams last season finished April under .500.

                                12) Mark Mulder's last rehab start was anything by optimistic: nine runs in 3.2 IP. Ugh.

                                11) Roy Halladay is first pitcher to lose three straight complete games since Randy Johnson in ?99.

                                10) Montreal Expos once traded Grady Sizemore, Cliff Lee and Brandon Phillips for Bartolo Colon. Incredibly bad trade, made on June 27, 2002 by current Mets' GM Omar Minaya.

                                9) Ian Kennedy may well become a fine big league pitcher someday, but right now, he ain't ready to pitch in the majors. Simple as that.

                                8) A $200M payroll, and Shelley Duncan bats cleanup? Bronx has a roster that is over 50% guys who make less than $1M a year- their talent level has dropped accordingly. They're just not real good right now.

                                7) Tough week in Denver, where Nuggets got swept by Lakers, Avalanche got swept by Detroit, and Rockies are off to dismal start, at 11-18, losing SS Tulowitzki until July with leg injury. .

                                6) Bills are getting paid $78M to play eight games in Toronto over next five seasons. Capacity at Rogers Centre is 54,000, so tickets figure to be expensive, and popular.

                                5) Tickets at Ralph Wilson Stadium average around $51, the cheapest in the NFL. Toronto is only 90 miles from Buffalo. Wonder how many New Yorkers will make the trip.

                                4) This could be tough year for Tennessee football coach Phil Fulmer, who has to break in a new QB and eight new assistant coaches. Huge turnover for a program like Tennessee's.

                                3) $25 tickets for Sunday's Texas-Oakland are discounted by a dollar for each hit A's had Thursday in Anaheim; A's went nuts, had 20 hits in 15-8 win, so now those seats are just $5 apiece Sunday.

                                2) Dave Duncan makes $400,000 a year? Get this man an agent.

                                1) New York Giants have played in four Super Bowls, winning three; in the seasons after their first three Super Bowls, Giants went a combined 21-27.
