    The Kentucky Derby

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Saturday, May 3

    Kentucky Derby Preview

The 'Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sport' arrives on Saturday with the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.

Out of the 20-horse field entered in the Derby, Big Brown has been singled out as the favorite at 3/1. Trained by Richard Dutrow Jr. and ridden by two-time Derby winner Kent Desormeaux, Big Brown has gone undefeated as a three-year-old with three victories which includes an impressive win in the Florida Derby. However, if Big Brown does win he’ll have to go against history to do it. Big Brown was unlucky in the post draw and drew the outside No. 20 post. In the Derby’s lengthy history, only one horse has won out of the No. 20 post in 15 attempts. That lone winner was Clyde Van Dusen way back in 1929.

Big Brown’s bad luck in the post draw could provide an opening for Colonel John or Pyro to pull off an upset. Colonel John follows Big Brown on the odds list at 4/1. Colonel John won the Santa Anita Derby early last month, but the Derby will be the first race he has ever run on a dirt track. All of Colonel John’s previous races were run on synthetic tracks, which could put him at a disadvantage in poor conditions. Pyro was considered to be a perennial favorite after winning his first two races of the season, but a disappointing 10th-place finish in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes has lowered his stock a little. Even with the questions after his Blue Grass finish, Pyro is still listed at 6/1 in the Derby.

There are a number of other interesting stories scattered throughout the rest of the field of 20, including Eight Belles. Listed at 20/1, Eight Belles is the first filly entered in the Derby since 1999 when Excellent Meeting finished fifth and Three Rings was 19th.

Trainer Barclay Tagg, who trained 2003 Derby champion Funny Cide, pins his hopes for a return to the winner’s circle on Tale of Ekati. The 15/1 underdog won the Wood Memorial earlier this season to make him an interesting dark horse on Saturday. Tagg also has Big Truck in the Derby, but he’s already been written off after receiving the worst odds in the field at 50/1.

Trainer Todd Pletcher failed to snap his long Derby drought last year and he’ll try again with a pair of horses this year. At 0-for-19 in the Derby, Pletcher’s best chance at breaking that streak appears to be Monba, who won the Blue Grass Stakes earlier this year and enters the Derby at 15/1. Pletcher’s other entry is Cowboy Cal at 20/1.

Two other horses listed at 20/1 which are noteworthy include Visionaire and Denis of Cork. Visionaire is this year’s entry for trainer Michael Matz, who trained 2006 winner Barbaro. Oddly enough, Visionaire drew the eighth post, the same position Barbaro started from the year he won. Denis of Cork will be ridden by Calvin Borel, who rode Street Sense to victory in last year’s Derby. The last jockey to win the Derby in back-to-back years was Ed Delahoussaye on Gato Del Sol in 1982 and on Sunny’s Halo in 1983.

    Odds to win Kentucky Derby

    Big Brown 3/1
    Colonel John 4/1
    Pyro 6/1
    Gayego 15/1
    Monba 15/1
    Tale of Ekati 15/1
    Z Fortune 15/1
    Bob Black Jack 20/1
    Cool Coal Man 20/1
    Court Vision 20/1
    Cowboy Cal 20/1
    Denis of Cork 20/1
    Eight Belles 20/1
    Recapturetheglory 20/1
    Smooth Air 20/1
    Visionaire 20/1
    Adriano 30/1
    Anak Nakal 30/1
    Z Humor 30/1
    Big Truck 50/1

New York Mets at Arizona Diamondbacks [FOX | 3:45 PM ET]

Mets: The young Mike Pelfrey has pitched well overall this season but he was more effective in his first two starts than the two most recent outings. In Pelfrey’s two most recent starts, he’s given up 19 hits and 9 runs over 10 1/3 innings, compared to 10 hits and just two runs in his previous 12 innings on the mound. Pelfrey has faced the Diamondbacks once, going 0-1 with a 5.06 ERA.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Diamondbacks (-180, O/U 8.5): Brandon Webb is the early leader to capture National League Cy Young honors. Webb is 6-0 on the season with an impressive 1.98 ERA. Webb hasn’t given up more than 3 runs in any of his 7 starts this year. Webb has uneven career numbers against the Mets. He’s just 2-6 in 9 career starts yet he has a career ERA of just 2.26 against New York.

            Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (Side Play of the Day)

Chicago Cubs at St. Louis Cardinals [FOX | 3:45 PM ET]

Cubs: While Chicago's Ted Lilly has struggled away from home this season with an 0-2 mark and 7.71 ERA, he has enjoyed some success against the Cardinals during his career. Lilly is 3-2 lifetime vs. St. Louis with a 2.93 ERA. The Cardinals are hitting just .210 against him, which is much better than what he has shown on the road so far at .310.

            Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

Cardinals (-110, O/U 8.5): There has been a big difference between Kyle Lohse at home and on the road so far this season. Lohse is a perfect 2-0 so far at home with a stellar 1.08 ERA, giving up just 3 runs there in 4 starts totaling 25 innings. He is coming off a win there against the Astros on Sunday, allowing 1 run and 4 hits in 6 innings with 1 walk and 3 strikeouts.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: 6

Baltimore Orioles at Los Angeles Angels [FOX | 3:45 PM ET]

Orioles: Baltimore's Daniel Cabrera has surprisingly not suffered a loss in 2008, with the team winning 5 of his 6 starts. Cabrera did not get a decision last time out at Chicago on Monday, as the game was called after 12 innings due to rain. He walked 7 White Sox in that game, which was only the second time this season he posted more walks than strikeouts. The 6-foot-9, 269-pound righty is 2-3 lifetime vs. LA with a 6.55 ERA.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Angels (-125, O/U 9.5): LA's Jon Garland will try to rebound from one of his worst starts of the season against a team he has enjoyed some success against. Garland was bombed for 7 runs and 10 hits in 6 innings of a 14-2 loss to Oakland on Monday, walking 3 and striking out 5. He is 5-2 lifetime vs. Baltimore with a 4.50 ERA but will need to turn things around at home, where he is 1-2 with an 8.31 ERA in 3 starts.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: 6

              SCOREBOARD

              Saturday, May 3

Chicago Cubs at St. Louis (3:45 p.m.). Kyle Lohse (3-0, 2.36 ERA) helped the surprising Cardinals win a club-record 18 games in April. He gets the ball against Cubs left-hander Ted Lilly (1-4, 6.46 ERA) in a matchup of two of the top teams in the NL Central.

              STARS

              Friday

              — Tim Hudson, Braves, threw his 11th career shutout, scattering three hits in a 2-0 win over Cincinnati. Hudson struck out 10 without issuing a walk.

              — Jose Bautista, Pirates, homered twice and drove in four runs in an 11-4 win over the Nationals. He also scored three times.

              — Pat Burrell, Phillies, hit a two-run homer with two outs in the 10th to beat San Francisco, 6-5. Burrell had been 0-for-3 before the deciding shot.

              — Shaun Marcum, Blue Jays, gave up two hits and three walks in 6 2-3 innings while battling a stomach bug in a 2-0 win over the White Sox. Marcum also struck out nine batters.

              — Dan Uggla, Marlins, homered twice and drove in four runs in a 6-4 win over the Padres.

              — Hunter Pence, Astros, homered twice—part of a five-homer game by Houston — and drove in three runs in a 7-4 victory over the Brewers.

              — Jeremy Guthrie, Orioles, gave up three hits and two runs in seven innings in a 4-3 victory over the Angels. He struck out six and walked two to win for the first time in 16 starts.

              MEANINGFUL HOMERS

Miguel Tejada fulfilled the wish of 8-year-old Jacob Scott, hitting the first of three straight Houston home runs after promising the little boy with muscular dystrophy that he’d go deep. The Astros wound up hitting five homers in a 7-4 win over Milwaukee, with impeccable timing: $10,000 was donated to the Muscular Dystrophy Association for each homer hit.

              TRI-CYCLE

The Mets’ Jose Reyes got three legs of the cycle, but was thrown out at home plate in the eighth inning trying to stretch a triple into the home run he needed. Reyes finished 4-for-5 with a double and a pair of triples, scoring three times in the Mets’ 7-2 win over Arizona.

              SHORT-CIRCUITED

An electrical outage that knocked out a couple banks of lights down each base line delayed the Pirates-Nationals game 25 minutes in the bottom of the fourth. Oddly, the punchless Pirates finally showed a little bit of power—they won, 11-4.

              WANG-DERFUL

Chien-Ming Wang became the AL’s first six-game winner and ended the Yankees’ three-game losing streak with a 5-1 victory over Seattle. While New York has won all seven starts by Wang (6-0), the Yankees are 8-16 in other games. The Yankees improved to 27-7 when Wang starts following a loss, winning 11 in a row, and he is 22-6 in those games.

              SICKENINGLY GOOD

Shaun Marcum held down the White Sox much better than his lunch. The Toronto starter struck out a season-high nine, allowing just a pair of singles, in a 2-0 win made all the more remarkable by a stomach bug. “When I was warming up, maybe from running around or something, my stomach felt like it wasn’t going to be able to keep anything down,” Marcum said. “I threw up after the first and the second, but other than that I was able to hang with it.”

              GUTHRIE WINS!

Jeremy Guthrie won for the first time in 16 starts, helping the Orioles to a 4-3 win over the Angels. He got his first win since beating the Yankees 4-2 at Baltimore on July 27, allowing just two runs and three hits over seven innings with six strikeouts.

              AILING

Twins OF Carlos Gomez was carted off the field in the fifth inning after Detroit catcher Ivan Rodriguez pegged him on the batting helmet while stealing second. Gomez was OK. … Arizona 2B Orlando Hudson strained his right hamstring running out a double against the Mets. … Detroit reliever Denny Bautista left in the eighth inning against Minnesota with a shoulder injury. … Milwaukee RHP Yovani Gallardo was placed on the DL with a torn right knee ligament. He was injured Thursday while attempting to cover first base and is likely headed for season-ending surgery.

              SPEAKING

“We just can’t win one out of five games, every time Wang pitches. It’s not going to work. It’s not a good win percentage. Starting pitching is where it’s at, especially in the postseason. At this point, we’ll see if we even make the postseason.”—Yankees co-chairman Hank Steinbrenner, before Wang improved to 6-0 in a 5-1 victory over the Mariners.

Orlando Magic at Detroit Pistons [TNT | 7:30 PM ET]

Magic: Orlando has advanced to the second round for the first time since 1996 and was the first team in the playoffs to move on. The Magic were swept by the Pistons in the first round a year ago but split 4 regular-season meetings, showing some improvement. They will likely need to improve their 3-point shooting after hitting 32 percent (48-of-148) in 5 games against the Raptors. Orlando was 4-2-1 ATS when playing with 3 days of rest or more during the regular season while Detroit is coming off its best 10 quarters of basketball of the postseason.

Road team is 15-5-3 ATS in the last 23 meetings.
Magic are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games overall.
The UNDER is 8-1 in Orlando's last 9 road games.

                      Key Injuries - NONE

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 91

Pistons (-6, O/U 188.5): Detroit's advantage in this series clearly lies in the backcourt with veterans Chauncey Billups and Richard Hamilton, who scored a game-high 24 points in the series-clinching win over Philadelphia on Thursday. Billups will have the challenge of holding Orlando's Jameer Nelson in check after he averaged 17.2 points and 4.8 assists vs. Toronto in the first round. Nelson is giving up at least 3 inches to Billups and struggled in their head-to-head matchup last year.

Pistons are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games overall.
The UNDER is 12-4 in Detroit's last 16 games as a favorite.
The OVER is 9-1 in the last 10 meetings at Detroit.

                      Key Injuries - NONE

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 97

San Antonio Spurs at New Orleans Hornets [TNT | 10 PM ET]

Spurs: One of the keys for San Antonio in this series will be limiting New Orleans perimeter ace Peja Stojakovic. The Spurs have just the man for the job in defensive stopper Bruce Bowen, who helped hold Phoenix point guard Steve Nash in check in the first round. Stojakovic made 61 percent (17-of-28) of his 3-point attempts against the Mavs while averaging 15.8 points per game.

Road team is 6-2 ATS in the last 8 meetings.
The OVER is 6-2 in San Antonio's last 8 games overall.

                      Key Injuries - NONE

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 90

Hornets (-3, O/U 183.5): What New Orleans lacks in experience against the defending NBA champs could be made up with depth, as the Spurs are limited offensively beyond Sixth Man of the Year Manu Ginobili, who scored 20 points or more in the first 3 games of San Antonio's first-round series vs. Phoenix before totaling 18 combined in the last 2. The Hornets have their own "microwave" off the bench in Jannero Pargo, as he averaged 14.6 points per game against Dallas in the first round. They will also be looking for quality minutes off the bench from Bonzi Wells and Julian Wright.

Hornets are 21-7 ATS in their last 28 home games.
Hornets are 15-5 ATS this season when playing on at least 2 days of rest.
The UNDER is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings.

                      Key Injuries - NONE

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 93

                              Orlando at Detroit (-6 1/2, 188 1/2)

Even though they beat the Toronto Raptors in five games, the Orlando Magic weren't all that impressive in the series. They struggled with their shooting, Dwight Howard was dominant in the paint at times but also disappeared for stretches, and they were a lesser team on the road.

That doesn't bode well for this series against the Detroit Pistons. There will be much tougher matchups for almost every Orlando player in this round, but most importantly, Howard will have to deal with Rasheed Wallace, one of the best low-post defenders in the league and Jameer Nelson will be matched up against the much bigger Chauncey Billups. Hedo Turkoglu was a big factor in the first round, but if Orlando is depending on him to create the offense, the Pistons will be laughing all the way to the Eastern final.

Detroit wasn't all that impressive in their opening-round series either, but in the end they won three straight games to close out the series against an underrated Philadelphia 76ers team and improved as the series went on. The Pistons were sluggish in early games, but they showed their veteran savvy and won games when they had to.

Detroit has dominated Orlando in the past (swept them in the first round of the playoffs last year) and they will do so again in this series. Between Wallace, Antonio McDyess and Theo Ratliff, they have the manpower to deal with Howard and Billups will make things much more difficult for Nelson at the point. The Magic got off easy against the defensively soft Raptors in the first round and they are about to find out what real defense is like tonight.

                              Pick: Pistons
