Pick 'n' Roll: Friday's best NBA bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            Boston at Atlanta (+8, 189)

Admittedly, Atlanta got destroyed in Game 5 on Wednesday night. Even the +14 1/2 they were gifted by the bookies didn't help their backers at the pay window.

But the difference between that game and Atlanta's Game 4 win wasn't to do with anything major either team changed tactically. The real difference was the intensity.

Boston came out fired up and maintained the intensity throughout the game. Paul Pierce was particularly fired up after his exchange with Al Horford in Game 4. He finished with 22 points, 6 assists and seven rebounds - his best performance of the series. Atlanta's Joe Johnson, on the other hand, struggled to cope with more defensive attention from the Celtics in the halfcourt and he didn't try to assert himself in the face of the added pressure.

This time, the intensity factor should swing back to favor Atlanta. Their home crowd has been a huge force in the series and eight points for the home team in that arena is huge. Plus, Johnson will be more accustomed to the defensive pressure and, with their backs against the wall, the Hawks will bring a much better effort to Game 6.

            Pick: Hawks

            Houston at Utah (-7 1/2, 180 1/2)

Rafer Alston isn't the biggest star on the Houston Rockets. Calling him a star at all is a bit of a stretch, but the point guard is starting to shine in this series, and he may be the biggest reason the Rockets have covered the last three games.

Was it a coincidence that Alston returned from injury in Game 3 and since then, the Rockets have looked like a different team?

He gives Houston another ball-handler at the point and a deadly 3-point shooter, but he also allows Bobby Jackson to be used off the bench for a defensive boost. The formula has been the perfect antidote to the Jazz, who are up 3-2 in the series but look to be fading fast.

            Pick: Rockets

              SCOREBOARD
              Friday, May 2

Seattle at the New York Yankees (7:05 p.m.). Erik Bedard and the Mariners take on Chien-Ming Wang and the Yankees. Bedard (2-0, 2.04 ERA) won his first game back from the disabled list last Saturday, while Wang (5-0, 3.23) struck out nine in a 1-0 victory over Cleveland on Sunday.

              STARS
              Thursday

              - Ryan Braun, Brewers, homered and drove in three runs in a 4-3 win over the Cubs.

              - Sidney Ponson, Rangers, pitched eight innings in a 2-1 victory over the Royals, earning his first win in exactly a year.

              - Juan Pierre, Dodgers, went 2-for-3 with a two-run double in a 5-3 victory over the Marlins. He also was hit by a pitch, stole a base and scored a run.

              - Matt Garza, Rays, allowed two runs and three hits over six innings in a 4-2 victory over the Orioles that kept the surprising Rays atop the AL East.

              - A.J. Burnett, Blue Jays, scattered three hits over 7 2/3 innings in a 3-0 victory over the Red Sox. He struck out five and walked five.

              OUCH!

Rockies star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki has a torn tendon in his left quadriceps and could be out until the All-Star break.
B.J. Upton left Tampa Bay's 4-2 victory over the Orioles with a strained left shoulder. Upton said he should be fine in a day or two.

              POWER PITCHER

Carlos Zambrano pitched 6 1/3 innings in the Cubs' 4-3 loss to Milwaukee, allowing one run and seven hits. He also helped himself with his 13th career homer-tying the team record held by Ferguson Jenkins.

              SWEEPING GIANT

The Dodgers completed their second consecutive series sweep by beating Florida 5-3. The Dodgers have won six in a row, their longest winning streak since taking seven straight to close the 2006 season.

              SPREAD THE WEALTH

The Athletics pounded out 20 hits in a 15-6 rout of the Angels, highlighted by an eight-run fifth inning. Everybody got in on the act, too, with five different A's driving in a pair of runs each and every player in the starting lineup getting a hit.

              SEXSON'S SWING

The Mariners' Richie Sexson hit the first pitch he saw from Masa Kobayashi for his 300th career homer in a 3-2, 11-inning loss to Cleveland. It was his sixth of the season and 100th since signing with Seattle as a free agent after the 2004 season. The first baseman reached the Seattle milestone in 463 games, quickest in team history.

              BURNING BOSTON

Toronto starter A.J. Burnett improved to 4-0 against Boston by scattering three hits over 7 2-3 innings in a 3-0 victory. He's allowed one run in 16 innings over two starts at Fenway Park.

              HOWARD CONNECTS

Slumping slugger Ryan Howard homered off Joe Thatcher leading off the eighth inning, pulling a 2-0 fastball into the right field seats and helping Philadelphia to a 3-2 win over the Padres. The 2006 NL MVP, who is batting just .184 with six homers and 14 RBIs, also had an RBI double.

              SPEAKING

"Fundamentally sound baseball-it sounds simple and boring, but you put yourself in position to win a game."-Dodgers manager Joe Torre, whose team scratched out two runs in the ninth for a 5-3 victory over the Marlins.

              SEASONS
              May 2

1917-Fred Toney of the Cincinnati Reds and Hippo Vaughn of the Chicago Cubs each threw nine hitless innings, but the Reds won 1-0 on two hits in the 10th. Jim Thorpe drove in the winning run.

1923-Walter Johnson recorded his first shutout of the season and the 100th of his major league record 113 as the Washington Senators beat the New York Yankees 3-0. Yankees shortstop Everett Scott received a medal from the American League for playing in his 1,000th consecutive game.

1939-Lou Gehrig of the New York Yankees did not play against the Detroit Tigers at Briggs Stadium, ending at 2,130 his streak of consecutive games played. Gehrig never played again. Babe Dahlgren took his place at first base. The Yankees didn't miss his bat, however, as they beat the Tigers 22-2.

1954-Stan Musial hit five home runs in a doubleheader split with the New York Giants at St. Louis. The Cardinals won the first game 10-6 but lost the second 9-7.

1995-Hideo Nomo of the Los Angeles Dodgers became the first native of Japan to play in the majors in three decades. Nomo pitched five scoreless innings of one-hit ball, but the Dodgers blew a 3-0 lead and lost to San Francisco 4-3.

2000-Atlanta became the first NL team in 49 years to win 15 straight games by defeating Los Angeles 5-3.

2002-Mike Cameron hit four homers and came close to a record-setting fifth in leading the Seattle Mariners to a 15-4 victory over the Chicago White Sox. He became the 13th player in major league history to homer four times in a game. Cameron connected in his first four at-bats, in just five innings. He joined Bret Boone as the first teammates to hit two home runs in the same inning. They connected back-to-back twice in a 10-run first.

2005-Jim Edmonds hit a three-run homer off closer Danny Graves, and John Mabry added a two-run shot that completed the greatest ninth-inning comeback in St. Louis Cardinals history. The Cardinals sent 12 batters to the plate and scored seven runs in the top of the ninth to beat Cincinnati 10-9.

              Today’s birthday: Luke Hudson 31.

San Diego at Florida (-120, 9)

Justin Germano has been the epitome of inconsistency this season. After starting out the season with 13 scoreless innings, the Padres right-hander has given up 16 earned runs in his two latest starts and his ERA has ballooned to 6.04.

Combine pitching like that with .199 hitting over the last 10 games, and it's not surprising that San Diego have only won two of its last 10 even though it was favored in six of them.

The Padres will be facing Mark Hendrickson, who has been red hot in his last five starts. Take away his season-opening loss to Pittsburgh and Hendrickson would have a 2.77 ERA and he'd be up nearly five units.

                    Pick: Marlins

                    Chicago at Toronto (-130, 8 1/2)

Toronto's pitching has been superb, but that doesn't make much of a difference when the bats are absolutely silent. Even though the rotation put up a 1.60 ERA over the last six games, the nine-game road trip was a disaster because the offense managed to hit just .216 and produced only 2.7 runs per game. Seven of those games played under the total.

Chicago's offense hasn't been much better. The White Sox are ranked 27th in the major leagues with a .242 team batting average. They are also last in the American League with 219 hits.

With the roof closed in Toronto, batters may get a bit of an edge, but the way these teams are hitting it promises to be a quiet night at the Rogers Centre. Six of the seven meetings between Toronto and Chicago played under the total last season.

                    Pick: Under
