    Six-pack for Wednesday

-- Arizona's Maz Scherzer pitched 4.1 hitless IP in his major league debut, I believe the longest hitless debut in history of the big leagues. He looks like an awesome prospect.

-- Roy Halladay pitched his fourth complete game in a row, but Toronto lost 1-0, they've lost Halladay's last three starts.

-- Angels are now 6-0 in Saunders starts after he beat A's 2-0.

-- Smoltz took Glavine's place on DL; Braves slipped to 4-10 on road, losing to Washington 6-3.

-- New Orleans Hornets beat Dallas in five games, Spurs beat the Suns in five. Game 5 of Hawks-Celtics is tonight.

-- We'll have analysis of the Kentucky Derby here Thursday night or Friday morning.

Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

Tomorrow, we'll round the bases in the American League........

      13) Moving the NFL Draft around the country is a great idea; the NHL does it, makes perfect sense. Its a fun event; fans will flock to see it, no matter where it goes.

      12) Thomas Dimitroff, the Falcons' new GM, compared his new QB, Matt Ryan, to Tom Brady, which is a major injustice. Ryan is expected to be a savior; Brady was a 6th-round draft pick.

      11) Arizona is off to great start in NL West; if they keep Randy Johnson healthy, how would you like to go into a short series against them and see Webb-Haren-Johnson? Tough to beat.

      10) Byproduct of the Haren/Oakland trade is that Tucson, the Dtamondbacks' AAA team, is 6-19, the worst club in the PCL. Arizona traded lot of good prospects to the A's, with two of them currently in Oakland's starting pitching rotation.

      9) Jacksonville went for it on 4th down 33 times last year, eight times more than any other team. They went 19-33. Saints went for it next most times, going 11-25.

      8) Carolina drafted Oregon RB Stewart, who had an operation in his toe during off-season. How did Panthers know his toe is OK? One of their tream doctors performed the operation.

      7) Think about the financial impact of the Hawks winning Game 4 against the Celtics; it guarantees a Game 6 will be played, and it figures to sell out. So lets say 18,000 people at an average of, lets says, $50 a ticket. Thats $900,000 extra before any food is sold or cars are parked or t-shirts sold. Big win for them.

      6) Ben HanXXXough, brother of North Carolina's Tyler, is going to transfer to Notre Dame from Mississippi State; he played 33 minutes a game in Starkville last year, he's pretty good player.

      5) Of the first 84 teams to go down 3-0 in NBA playoff series, only three forced a Game 7, and none of the three won Game 7.

      4) I didn't know Brian Billick works for the NFL Network; this bothers me-- we can tell who committed a crime thanks to one fiber of hair, but I can't get NFL Network on my cable system, and yes, I'm going to keep complaining about this.

      3) Arizona committed 137 penalties for 1,128 yards last season, 17 more penalties than any other team, 122 more yards than the second most-penalized team.

      2) Seeing as how Michael Jordan hired Larry Brown to be the Bobcats' coach today, his job tomorrow is to make a short list of Brown's potential replacements. Brown could resign at any time- this is his ninth NBA coaching job, and he's won a lot more than he's lost.

      1) Media seems to be against the idea of the NFL Draft going around the country. The idea of spending a weekend in Detroit or Denver doesn't appeal to them, but why shouldn't people all over the country get to see Mel Kiper's hair?

            Tips and Trends
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Houston Astros at Arizona Diamondbacks [3:40 PM ET]

Astros: Shawn Chacon has been outstanding with his 2.45 ERA on the season despite his control being an issue. The right-hander walked 6 Cardinals in his last appearance and has 17 total over his 5 starts. Chacon said he was a “little stiff” which forced him to walk a number of batters early in that contest, but did battle back to allow just 1 earned run over 7 innings. The former Yankee is just 2-6 but does have a 3.88 career ERA against the Diamondbacks.

The OVER is 8-3 in the last 11 meetings at Arizona.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Diamondbacks (-160, O/U 9): Randy Johnson is coming off his first win since June 10th of last year. The lanky left-hander allowed just 1 run over 6 innings against the Padres, and said it “felt good” getting staked to a 5 run early lead. The "Big Unit" has a very respectable 2.70 ERA on the season and has a 20-9 strikeout-walk ratio. He is 4-0 with a 2.50 lifetime ERA against the Astros.

Diamondbacks are 12-4 in their last 16 Wednesday games.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Detroit Tigers at New York Yankees [7:05 PM ET]

Tigers: Detroit's Jeremy Bonderman has not fared well against the Yankees during his career, going 2-6 in 9 starts with a 5.58 ERA. Bonderman has struggled with his control in his last 2 starts overall despite allowing a pair of earned runs each time out. He has walked 13 batters in his last 9 2/3 innings, serving up a home run in each of his last 2 starts as well.

Tigers are 7-21 in the last 28 meetings in New York.

            Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

Yankees (-135, O/U 9.5): New York southpaw Andy Pettitte is coming off his worst start of the season, giving up 5 runs and 8 hits in 5 innings of a 6-4 loss at Cleveland last Friday. Pettitte gave up back-to-back homers to Jhonny Peralta and Franklin Gutierrez to in the bottom of the fifth inning to spoil a 2-homer effort by Jason Giambi. He also struggled in his only home start this season, giving up 5 runs and 8 hits in 5 innings of a 6-3 loss to Tampa Bay back on April 5th.

The UNDER is 15-5-1 in Yankees' last 21 games as a favorite.

Milwaukee Brewers at Chicago Cubs [ESPN | 8:05 PM ET]

Brewers: Jeff Suppan hasn’t received a decision in his last 4 starts, but 3 of the 4 were quality appearances. The right-hander has allowed just 3 earned runs combined in his last 2 starts (Phillies and Reds) in more than 13 innings pitched. The only decision Suppan has received this season was a win against these Cubs back on April 2nd. The Oklahoma native allowed just 2 earned runs over 6+ innings at Wrigley.

Brewers are 4-12 in their last 16 Wednesday games..

Key Injuries - CF Mike Cameron (suspension) has returned.

            PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Cubs (-135): Ryan Dempster has come out of the bullpen in a big way, starting the season 3-0 with a 2.90 ERA. The Cubs dropped his last appearance 5-3 to the Nationals, but they are 4-1 year-to-date with Dempster on the mound. The third-round selection is 5-2 in his career against the Brewers with a 2.40 ERA, which includes a win already this season at Wrigley against the Brew Crew.

Cubs are 15-7 in their last 22 games on grass.

A's are 9-4 in their last 13 road games.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: 2

Angels (-150, O/U 8.5): Ervin Santana is enjoying a breakthrough season for LA, going 4-0 in 5 starts with a solid 2.97 ERA. Santana has been ever better against the A's during his career with a stellar 7-1 mark and 1.38 ERA. They are hitting just .181 against him, and he pitched a season-high 8 innings in his last home start, walking none and striking out 8 in a 4-1 win over Seattle back on April 19th.

The UNDER is 8-3-2 in LA's last 13 games overall.
The UNDER is 8-1 in Santana's last 9 starts vs. Oakland..

Key Injuries - C Jeff Mathis (illness) is questionable.
3B Maicer Izturis (back) is questionable.

                  NBA Games

Hawks were down 10 in fourth quarter at home Monday, rallied to win behind Smith/Johnson, who took all their shots in final quarter- not even Bibby took a shot. Atlanta is 12-31 on road this season- they lost first two games of series 104-81/96-77, as Celtics held them to 38% from floor in both games. Interesting to see if Celtics double or trap Johnson in this game.

Cavaliers are up 3-1 in series, beating Wizards 93-86/116-86 at home in first two series games; they made 13-28 from arc in the 100-97 Game 4 win- they also outrebounded Wiz by 26 in that game, grabbing 18 offensive boards. Arenas' knee injury has curtailed Washington's offense; he's playing, but not at 100%.

Washington Wizards at Cleveland Cavaliers [TNT | 7 PM ET]

Wizards: Surprisingly, Brendan Haywood is the only Washington player to step up his play in the postseason. Haywood is averaging 13 points, up from 10.6 during the regular season. He has also reportedly told Cleveland star LeBron James to stop whining about foul calls and just play basketball. Insiders expect the Wizards to go all out in Game 5, down 3-1. “We are going to throw everything we can at them,” Wizard head coach Eddie Jordan said. “We will change up defenses. We will try to keep them off balance as much as we can. We have to create more offense. We just have to play like it’s a Game 7.”

Wizards are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 Wednesday games.

                      Key Injuries - NONE

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 93

Cavs (-4.5, O/U 192): Cleveland needed somebody to step up in Game 4 besides James, and Delonte West rose to the occasion. West hit the biggest shot of his young career - beating the Wizards on Sunday with a 3-pointer - and finished with 21 points. “I’m sure Washington is having a flashback,” said James, referring to Damon Jones beating them in Game 6 of their 2006 first-round series. “We’ve definitely hit some big shots in this place.” The Cavs hit 13-of-28 3-pointers in Game 4 after making only 2-of-16 in Game 3.

Favorite is 7-3 ATS in the last 10 meetings.
The UNDER is 8-2 in Cleveland's last 10 games overall.
The UNDER is 16-5 in Cleveland's last 21 home games.

                      Key Injuries - NONE

Atlanta Hawks at Boston Celtics [TNT | 8:35 PM ET]

Hawks: Joe Johnson and Josh Smith scored all 32 of Atlanta's points in the fourth quarter of Game 4, and they will be playing at home at least 1 more time in the series. Johnson scored 20 of his career playoff-high 35 points in the fourth quarter while Smith's free throws with 2.6 seconds remaining sealed the victory. “It’s unbelievable,” Hawks head coach Mike Woodson said. “Joe Johnson willed us to win. He was hot and we continued to get him the ball.”

Hawks are 4-10 ATS in their last 14 Wednesday games.
The OVER is 11-5 in Atlanta's last 16 games overall.

                      Key Injuries - NONE

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 87

Celtics (-13.5, O/U 187.5): Boston will have no excuses back at home in Game 5 after seeing this series surprisingly tied at 2-2. The Celtics did not like Atlanta forward Al Horford getting in the face of Paul Pierce after hitting a late jumper in Game 3 and believe the Hawks are getting too high on themselves. “We’re going to have to find our team chemistry really quick,” Boston point guard San Cassell said. “Game Five is not going to be easy just because we are at home. The Hawks have confidence and they think they can beat us. They’ve beaten us the past two nights, so we are going to have to step it up back in Boston.”

Celtics are 8-0 ATS in their last 8 home games.
Celtics are 21-7 ATS in their last 28 games overall.

                      Key Injuries - NONE
