      SCOREBOARD

      Tuesday, April 29

Toronto at Boston (7:05 p.m.) Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay (2-3, 3.73 ERA) is looking for a little run support: He's pitched a combined 17 innings in his last two starts, a 5-3 loss to Tampa Bay and a 4-1 loss to Texas.

      STARS

      Monday

      - Dan Haren, Diamondbacks, pitched into the eighth inning and hit an RBI double to help Arizona beat Houston 5-3 and improve its major league-leading record to 19-7.

      - Frank Thomas, Athletics, tripled for the first time in six years and finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs in a 14-2 rout of the Los Angeles Angels.

      - Edwin Encarnacion, Reds, had a pair of RBI doubles and made a standout play at third base in the seventh inning to preserve a one-run lead during a 4-3 victory at St. Louis.

      PICK IT UP LATER

The Baltimore Orioles and Chicago White Sox were tied at 3 when play was suspended after 11 innings because of rain and a sloppy field full of mud and puddles. The game will resume at the beginning of the 12th later this season, but no date was set. All the statistics from Monday count. Juan Uribe hit a solo homer in the 11th off Baltimore closer George Sherrill, his first blown save in 10 chances this year.

      SIDELINED

Yankees catcher Jorge Posada was put on the 15-day disabled list for the first time in his career, ending a remarkable run of durability at baseball's most physically demanding position. The 36-year-old, who has caught at least 137 games in each of the past eight seasons, finally succumbed to pain in his right shoulder that he had been feeling for most of the season's first month. Posada traveled to Alabama to have his shoulder examined by famed orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews. When New York played Cleveland without Posada, it was the first time he wasn't part of the Yankees' active roster since Sept. 1, 1996, just before he was called up from the minors. After lasting only four innings Sunday against the New York Mets, Braves pitcher John Smoltz returned to Atlanta on Monday and was to have his troublesome right shoulder examined on Tuesday. Indians center fielder Grady Sizemore missed his second consecutive game because of a sprained right ankle.

      RELIEF ROLE

Barry Zito was demoted to the bullpen by the San Francisco Giants, who hope the former ace can correct his problems by working in relief. Zito, who only 16 months ago signed a $126 million, seven-year contract with the Giants to lead their rotation, was informed of the move in a meeting with manager Bruce Bochy. The left-hander has lost his first six starts this season and has a 7.53 ERA that jumped considerably after Zito was tagged for eight earned runs Sunday in a 10-1 loss to Cincinnati.

      A LONG, STRANGE TRIP

Mariano Rivera earned his eighth save as the New York Yankees beat Cleveland 5-2 to salvage a split of the four-game series after losing the first two. With the win, the Yankees concluded a stretch of playing 18 of 20 games away from home. "I've got to find my house key," pitcher Mike Mussina joked. "It's been so long since we've been home, we just assumed we're going to another hotel."

      SWINGS

Daric Barton, Jack Hannahan and Emil Brown homered for Oakland in a 14-2 rout of the Los Angeles Angels. The Athletics entered with just 12 home runs through their first 26 games. Houston has lost three straight following a six-game winning streak.

      MILESTONES

Mike Mussina earned his 253rd win, tying Hall of Famer Carl Hubbell on the career list, in the New York Yankees' 5-2 victory at Cleveland. The 39-year-old Mussina (3-3) allowed two runs and seven hits in five innings, just long enough to catch Hubbell for 41st place. With San Francisco's 4-0 victory over Colorado, French-born Bruce Bochy moved past former Giants skipper Felipe Alou for most victories by a foreign-born manager (1,034).

      STREAKING

Albert Pujols singled twice and walked in St. Louis' 4-3 loss to Cincinnati, extending his hitting streak to 12 games. He has reached base in all 27 games to start the season. Chad Gaudin (3-1) breezed to his third straight victory, allowing two runs, one earned, and five hits over six innings in Oakland's 14-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels.

      STRUGGLING

The defending NL champion Colorado Rockies have lost eight of nine following a 4-0 defeat in San Francisco. Indians slugger Travis Hafner is batting .149 (7-for-47) with seven RBIs in his last 13 games. Cleveland's Ryan Garko went 0-for-4, bounced into a double play and extended his hitless streak to 23 at-bats during a 5-2 loss to the New York Yankees.

      SNAPPED

Bronson Arroyo (1-3) pitched six solid innings in Cincinnati's 4-3 victory at St. Louis to help the Reds win their first series opener after losing the first nine. Arroyo entered 0-4 in eight outings since beating the Cardinals on Sept. 12.

      SPEAKING

"When I came in the whole infield was wet. There was water standing out there. The guy rolls one to short - you're picking up a ball that just got out of a dog's mouth and trying to throw it over to first."-Baltimore closer George Sherrill on Monday's game against the Chicago White Sox, which was suspended because of rain after 11 innings with the score tied at 3.

      SEASONS

      April 29

1918-Center fielder Tris Speaker executed the fourth unassisted double play of his career in the Cleveland Indians' 8-4 loss to the Chicago White Sox.

1922-The New York Giants hit four inside-the-park home runs at Braves Field in Boston. George Kelly hit two and Ross Youngs and Dave Bancroft hit the others.

1931-Wes Ferrell of the Cleveland Indians pitched a 7-0 no-hitter over the St. Louis Browns, including his brother Rick. Wes also knocked in four runs with a homer and a double.

1933-In a strange play at home plate, catcher Luke Sewell of the Washington Senators tagged out two Yankees runners on the same play. Lou Gehrig had held up, thinking a fly ball would be caught. Dixie Walker closed up on him, and both were tagged out trying to score.

1981-Steve Carlton struck out Montreal's Tim Wallach in the first inning of the Philadelphia Phillies' 6-2 victory over the visiting Expos to become the sixth major league pitcher, and first left-hander,to strike out 3,000 batters.

1986-Roger Clemens set a major league record by striking out 20 batters as the Boston Red Sox defeated the Seattle Mariners 3-1.

1987-Andre Dawson had five hits and hit for the cycle to lead the Chicago Cubs to an 8-4 victory over the San Francisco Giants.

1988-The Baltimore Orioles ended their 21-game losing streak by winning their first game of the season, 9-0 over the Chicago White Sox on a combined four-hitter by Mark Williamson and Dave Schmidt.

1994-Kirk Rueter of Montreal became the first major league pitcher since Fernando Valenzuela in 1981 to start his career with a 10-0 record as the Expos beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2.

2001-Geoff Jenkins homered twice, tying a major league record with five homers in two games, to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 10-0 win over the Montreal Expos. Jenkins was the 22nd player to hit five in two games and the first NL player to do it in 10 years.

2005-In the first matchup between 300-game winners in almost 18 years, the Cubs' Greg Maddux outdueled the Astros' Roger Clemens in Chicago's 3-2 win over Houston. Maddux earned his first win of season and 306th of his career, allowing two runs on seven hits over six innings.

2006-Albert Pujols set a major league record with his 14th homer in April, a tiebreaking shot in the eighth inning that sent St. Louis to a 2-1 victory over Washington. Pujols broke the mark for homers in April held by Ken Griffey Jr. (1997) and Luis Gonzalez (2001).

2007-Colorado shortstop Troy Tulowitzki had an unassisted triple play in the seventh inning of the Rockies' 9-7 win over Atlanta. After Kelly Johnson and Edgar Renteria reached on singles, Tulowitzki caught Chipper Jones' line drive behind second base. Tulowitzki stepped on the bag to double up Johnson and tagged Renteria for the third out. It was the 13th unassisted triple play in major league history and the first since 2003.

Today's birthdays: Kelly Shoppach 28; Rafael Betancourt 33; Luis Aparicio 74.

The Pistons finally flexed some muscle in outscoring the Sixers 57-38 in the second half to take Game Four in Philadelphia. The Pistons are the pick (-9) according to Dunkel, which has Detroit favored by 10. Dunkel Pick: Detroit (-9). Here are all of today's games.

Pick 'n' Roll: Tuesday's best NBA bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

          Philadelphia at Detroit (-9, 178)

For a while there, it looked like Flip Saunders was going to be spending his summer looking for a new job. His Pistons were in serious danger of going down 3-1 against the Atlanta Hawks as they trailed at halftime in Game 4, but Saunders finally figured out what he needed to do to beat the Hawks.

Atlanta had been frustrating the Pistons' offense and snuffing out Rip Hamilton's shot, so finally the Pistons started rotating screens to get the ball to Chauncey Billups where he was a threat to drive the lane. That forced Samuel Dalembert to stay in the paint, which in turn opened up the three-point shot for Rasheed Wallace, who nailed three long-range buckets in the second half.

That could be the key to the rest of the series.

          Pick: Pistons

          Phoenix at San Antonio (-5, 197 1/2)

As good as the Suns looked in Sunday's win, let's keep it in perspective. San Antonio was up 3-0 in the series, none of their starters played more than 29 minutes in the game, and by all accounts, they took a game off.

Now the Spurs are back at home, they'll be fired up, and everything that worked so well for the Suns on Sunday won't work this time. The Spurs know how to respond in a situation like this - they haven't lost back-to-back playoff games since 2006.

As Mike D'Antoni said: "It becomes really a kind of man-up, in your face, who's got the heart, who's got the will, who's got the energy."

That edge will most likely go to San Antonio tonight.

          Pick: Spurs

Hot Lines: Tuesday's best MLB bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Diego at Chicago Cubs (+110, N/A)

Could be a big day for the Padres in the Windy City. First of all, they send Ben Sheets to the hill to try out his troublesome triceps with a reasonable price on the road , but maybe more importantly for their struggling offense, they welcome outfielder Mike Cameron back to the lineup.

Cameron rejoins the team after serving a 25-game suspension for using a banned substance. The Padres are hoping he still has some pop left to hit in the No. 2 hole after scoring just seven runs over their last four games.

And it seems as though San Diego isn't overly concerned about Sheets' injury. They sent David Bush down to make room for the ace on the roster. Sheets faces off against Chicago's Jason Marquis.

            Pick: Padres

            Atlanta at Washington (+100, 9)

What's the best way for Atlanta to get over dropping the last two games of a three-game set against the hated Mets? A trip to D.C, right?

Well, maybe. Tom Glavine, today's starter, couldn't get out of the first inning the last time he faced the Nats when a strained hamstring sent him to the showers before he could record an out. He took the loss as a result and it was just the second time in 19 years that the veteran lefty didn't record an out.

His hammy's fine now, so expect him to bounce back today.

            Pick: Braves

Ice picks: Tuesday's best NHL bets
              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Pittsburgh vs. Rangers (-130, 5)

Something we've talked a lot about in Ice Picks over the past few weeks has been the quiet emergence of the Pens as one of the best defensive teams in the NHL. Pittsburgh has gone under the total in 10 of its last 13 games and the Rangers were reminded in Game 2 of just how tough it's become to score on this squad.

The Rangers lost 2-0 Sunday afternoon in Pittsburgh and they didn't get much more than a sniff or two of a scoring chance. The Pens have allowed a ridiculous 1.5 goals per game throughout the playoffs and the best part for bettors is oddsmakers are still focused on Pittsburgh's fire power, rather than its stifling play.

Four of the six Pittsburgh games these playoffs have seen over/unders of at least 5 1/2 goals.

              Pick: under

              Detroit vs. Colorado (-110, 5)

In the last round, Detroit jumped out to a 2-0 series lead at home against Nashville. Then the Wings lost two straight and Hockeytowners started hyperventilating.

The team says it is focused on not letting the same thing happen when this series heads back to Denver. The Pepsi Center is a tough building because of its great crowd and the Wings hope to combat any altitude issues by arriving in the Rockies on Sunday, two days ahead of game time.

The biggest factor for Game 3, though, could be Peter Forsberg. He missed the first two games of this series with a groin injury after being one of the Avs' best sparkplugs in the first round against Minnesota. He is listed as day-to-day and Colorado could use an energy boost after getting beaten all over the ice in Games 1 and 2.

A good sign for Colorado is that he skated in the warm-up before Saturday's game. If Forsberg doesn't play, beating Detroit is going to be tough and Avs will need someone else to fill the void.

The series price has adjusted accordingly and the Wings are now higher than -800 if you want to back them.

              Pick: Red Wings

Detroit Tigers at New York Yankees [7:05 PM ET]

Tigers: Kenny Rogers hasn’t been able to live up to his 2006 17-game winning form. Rogers was 3-4 in ’07 due to injuries, and is currently 1-3 with a lofty 7.66 ERA here in ’08. The south-paw has been rocked for 17 earned runs over his last 3 starts, and has recorded just 2 strikeouts over those 14 innings. Rogers also enters this contest with a 5-7 career mark against the Evil Empire with a 6.45 ERA.

Tigers are 6-21 in the last 27 meetings in New York.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Yankees (-135, O/U 10.5): Phil Hughes is still looking for his first win after five starts this season. New York took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third in his last outing against the White Sox, but a rain-delay forced him out of the game.
