                  SCOREBOARD

                  - Giants starter Kevin Correia was placed on the 15-day DL with a left oblique strain.

                  - Red Sox DH David Ortiz was out of the lineup again with a bruised right knee.

                  GOING THE DISTANCE
A bevy of starters made Sunday look a lot more like 1938 than 2008 by running up high pitch counts and going the distance. James Shields threw his first career shutout, 3-0 over the Red Sox. Paul Maholm gave up two hits and a run in a 5-1 victory over the Phillies, and Vicente Padilla scattered seven hits and two walks in a 10-0 win over the Twins.

                  HARD-LUCK STARTS
Josh Beckett, meet C.C. Sabathia. He can commiserate. The Red Sox ace gave up four hits and a run in seven innings, striking out 13 with just one walk, but still lost 3-0 to Tampa Bay and James Shields. Sabathia went eight innings for Cleveland, yielding four hits and a run while striking out eight with one walk, but lost 1-0 to Chien-Ming Wang and the Yankees.

                  UMPIRE OK
Umpire Kerwin Danley was released from a hospital early Sunday, about 5 hours after he took a 96 mph fastball to the right side of his jaw?briefly losing consciousness when the pitch from the Dodgers' Brad Penny slammed into his face mask. When Danley will be back isn't clear.

                  BIG-DOLLAR BUST
Matt Morris, the veteran right-hander added by the Pirates last season to stabilize a young rotation, was released. Morris was 0-4 with a 9.67 ERA. He?s making $10,037,283, or about one-fifth of the Pirates' payroll, and has a $1 million buyout for 2009.

                  BIG-DOLLAR BUST, PART II
Former Cy Young winner Barry Zito, signed to a seven-year, $126 million deal by San Francisco before last season, gave up eight runs on seven hits and three walks in three innings of a 10-1 loss to Cincinnati on Sunday. Zito dropped to 0-6 with a 7.53 ERA.

                  STREAK STOPPED
Cleveland center fielder Grady Sizemore was not in the lineup against the Yankees after rolling his ankle while running the bases a day earlier. Sizemore had played in a major league-high 382 consecutive games. He?s started in 531 of 549 career games.

                  SPEAKING
"The way that play is made is that Rios had got to be scooting all out or you can't do that. He can do that. God blessed him some awfully good legs." Blue Jays manager John Gibbons, after Alex Rios scored from first base on a single by Scott Rolen in a 5-2 win over the Royals.
"I'm not playing first base. I'm a catcher. We've got seven first basemen."- Yankees catcher Jorge Posado, who is going to the DL for the first time in his career with a sore arm. Evidently being the DH or playing first base is not an appealing alternative.

Ice picks: Monday's best NHL bets
                      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                      Montreal vs. Philadelphia (-135, 5 1/2)

If you didn't see either of the first two games of this series, you might look at the box scores and think Montreal had outplayed Philly. The Canadiens outshot the Flyers in both games for a combined total of 70-56.

But sometimes stats can lie and in this case, the shots aren't telling the whole story. Philadelphia has bullied Montreal all over the ice through two games and the Flyers controlled most of the play in Game 2. After the game, the Habs complained to reporters about hitting after the whistle. Their frustration was most evident when Tom Kostopolous took a cheap-shot roughing penalty while the Flyers were celebrating after their fifth goal of the 5-2 win.

Philadelphia also blocked an incredible 23 shots in Game 2 and their power play is now 2-for-4 for 50 percent. The biggest difference might be in goaltending, though, where Montreal's Carey Price has let in some questionable goals and has watched his save percentage dip from .925 to .875 from the last series.

With this one heading back to Philadelphia, Montreal is in trouble. The seven-game series against Boston may have taken too much out of the Canadiens to get past the Flyers and the series price is now just Montreal -125.

                      Pick: Flyers

                        N.Y. Yankees at Cleveland (-115, 10 1/2)

Aaron Laffey makes his first big league start of the season today after putting together a 3-1 record and a 2.77 ERA in Triple-A Buffalo. The lefty doesn't have overpowering stuff - his fastball tops out in the upper 90s - but he has a decent slider to go along with a sinker, his best pitch. He was 4-2 with a 4.56 ERA in nine starts with the Indians last year.

While Laffey looks to turn some heads in the bigs, Mike Mussina rebounded nicely in his last start to go seven innings for a win over the White Sox after giving up five runs to the BoSox in just three innings before that.

This line is likely to move in New York's direction, so jump on the Yanks early if you're leaning that way.

                        Pick: Yankees

                        Oakland at L.A. Angels (-135, 9)

Huge matchup between the American League's two best clubs, both sporting 16-10 records.

L.A. just returned home after taking four of six games on the road against Boston and Detroit, while Oakland has been hot too, winning four of its last five. The A's also send the red-hot Chad Gaudin, who has allowed just one earned run over his last 14 innings, to the mound today.

The Angels answer with Jon Garland.

                        Pick: Athletics

                            Toronto at Orlando (-7 1/2, 203)

How can the Raptors be four games into the postseason and still seem like they have no idea what they're doing with their point guard timeshare between Jose Calderon and T.J. Ford? That's been a question burning at Raptors bettors all season. Ford disrupted the flow of the game again on Saturday by forcing up too many quick shots even though his 12 points and 13 assists look good in the box score, while Calderon scored just two points and five assists over 21 minutes.

The worst thing is, point guard play is a secondary concern for Toronto - Dwight Howard is the real problem. He basically put the Raptors out of the game with a huge first quarter on Saturday and it doesn't look like Toronto has any answer for Superman in this series, especially when Rashard Lewis and Jameer Nelson are playing so well too.

                            Pick: Magic

                            L.A. Lakers at Denver (4 1/2, 227 1/2)

The Denver Nuggets can talk all they want about showing up to battle now that they're down 3-0 in the series, but they've done nothing to indicate they'll walk the walk tonight in Game 4.

Instead of rallying the troops following Saturday's game, Allen Iverson complained about not playing in the third quarter and Carmelo Anthony didn't talk to the media at all, leaving Eduardo Najera, of all people, to face the music.

"It's not over yet. Just get one game, one game, that's all we need," Najera told reporters. "And we need to do it for ourselves. That's the right approach we need to have right now."

Nice try, Najera, but we're not buying it.

                            Pick: Lakers
