Hot Lines: Saturday's best MLB bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Yankees at Cleveland (-105, 10 1/2)

In spite of Eric Wedge's assertion that Jeremy Sowers is "not the same guy from '07", bettors might want to be wary of the 24-year-old making his debut in the Cleveland rotation this season. He's a former No. 1 draft pick, but he didn't look like it last year when his location got lost somewhere on Route 66 and he was bounced from the rotation before the playoffs. Now he's got to try to prove himself in front of a national television audience against the New York Yankees' bats.

New York will put Ian Kennedy on the mound. He's in a similar position as Sowers was last year: a sophomore big leaguer learning that it's a lot tougher to deal with professional hitters after they've had a season to get to know your stuff. His 0-2 record and 9.64 ERA are testament to that.

          Pick: Over

          Oakland at Seattle (-145, 8 1/2)

So far, the Mariners haven't gotten their money's worth from Erik Bedard. The M's signed the left-hander to a one-year, $7 million contract, but so far he's pitched only 11 innings this season. He will make his third start of 2008 after a stint on the DL due to inflammation in his hip. As good as Bedard is, these injury problems have prevented him from getting in a rhythm and at a price like this, it's worth a bet that he won’t be in top form in his first start since April 9.

The A's are on a bit of a hot streak, winning six of their last seven games. Their bullpen has been outstanding and the addition of Frank Thomas, who was picked by Oakland up after being released by Toronto, should inject some much-needed power into the lineup.

          Pick: Oakland

                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ice picks: Saturday's best NHL bets
                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Colorado at Detroit (-200, 5)

It might sound pricey, but 2-1 odds aren't too bad considering the obstacles Colorado is facing in this game. They will be without Peter Forsberg who pulled a hamstring in the morning skate before Game 1 and Wojtek Wolski will probably miss the rest of the series after a nasty collision with Johan Franzen. On top of that, goaltender Jose Theodore may or may not be healthy after being sent back to the team's hotel mid-game on Thursday because he was "sick".

Considering all this, and the fact that Game 1 really wasn't as close as the score indicated, and the Wings' undefeated record on home ice in the playoffs thus far, 2-to-1 doesn't sound too bad for Hockeytown bettors.

                Pick: Red Wings

                Philadelphia at Montreal (-170, 5 1/2)

You have to wonder about any city that riots in the streets after its hockey team wins a first-round series. The Molson Centre was typically loud and enthusiastic for Game 1 and all the hockey hysteria in Montreal probably translates into the best home-ice advantage in the NHL playoffs.

But with all that passion comes attention and with attention comes pressure - which could start to weigh on the Canadiens as the hockey-mad city starts to sense the Stanley Cup is within reach. The Habs looked nervous early in Game 1 and they needed some serious luck (read: questionable penalty on Mike Richards) to pull out the win. Despite a distinct advantage in the season-series, Game 1 of this playoff series was dead even. The Flyers may have an advantage playing on the road, away from the pressure of fans and media and steal a game in Montreal.

                Pick: Flyers

                        Write-Up

                        NBA Games
Halftime margins in Orlando-Toronto series have been 17-20-21 points, with not much suspense; Magic made just 6-27 in Game 2 from arc, after being 22-60 in first two games. Home teams are 19-3 in first 22 playoff games. Raptors' shooting percentage is on rise, from 37.6/45.7/49.4 in first three games of series.

Lakers scored 125 ppg in beating Nuggets twice; Denver has to play better defense, or series won't last much longer. Lakers shot 50%+ in both games so far, making 21-48 from arc. With rumors about George Karl coming to New York as coach, you have to wonder if Nugget players will be glad to see him go.

Celtics cruised past Hawks in the first two games, winning by 23-19 points, after leading by 9-10 at the half. Its been quite a while since Atlanta has hosted playoff game; hopefully home team can at least compete a little. Hawks were 31-40 from line in Game 2, 0-5 from arc- they need to get Joe Johnson off.

Rockets got back in series with 94-92 road win in Game 3, with Alston scoring 20 points in his return to lineup. Utah was just 20-33 from foul line in 2-point loss, as they lost opportunity to salt this series away. Jazz scored 93-90-92 points in series, so their offense has been consistent, but with Alston back in the lineup, Houston's offense is more diverse.
