    Six-pack for Thursday

-- Steelers lead NFL, allowing only 266.4 yards/game, with Bucs second at 278……..Lions allowed 377.6, Buffalo 362.9, two worst figures in NFL.

-- Patriots led NFL, gaining 411.2 yards/game; Green Bay was next (378.7)…….49ers gained only 237.3 ypg, Chiefs 276.8; yes, 49ers gained 39 yards less per game than any other NFL team, which is why their offense will now be known as Martz Madness.

-- Bills finished 31st in yardage defense, 30th in offense, yet still managed to finish season x-x.

-- Saints (1,060) and Patriots (1,058) ran the most plays from scrimmage LY. Not surprisingly, 49ers (925), Buffalo (919) ran the fewest.

-- Steelers, Patriots tied for best in NFL by being on field for just 933 defensive plays; 49ers were on field for 1,078 plays, Lions 1,087, most in league.

-- That’s a minus-153 ratio of plays run for 49ers; you’d think they go after a ball control coach to take the pressure off the defense, but instead they signed up Martz as the offensive coordinator, whose teams have never been very strong at either turnover ratio or ball control.

Armadillo's List of 13: Odds and ends from world of sports

      13) Gabe Gross had two hits, scored winning run for Brewers Tuesday, after he had already been traded to Tampa Bay (he didn’t know it yet). Going from a contender to the cellar can’t be much fun, although the RF job in Tampa could become his. Guys do like to play regularly.

      12) Further oddities from Cardinal-Brewer game Tuesday were: a) Gabe Kapler getting game-winning hit. Kapler was manager in Class A ball last year, but has come back to play, and is better now than before he left,
      b) Gross was once the starting QB at Auburn-- he wore #22
      c) Albert Pujols played four innings at second base after Redbirds lost their last middle infielder to an injury when he was hit by a pitch. Pujols isn’t supposed to throw much because of his fragile elbow.

      11) Lions, Jets are both road favorite in Week 1 of NFL season. That doesn’t speak well of Dolphins or Falcons, the teams that are hosting them.

      10) Cleveland Browns’ first pick in this weekend’s NFL Draft is the 22nd pick in fourth round.

      9) Travis Ford turned down Providence, who then paid Keno Davis $1M a year to coach the Friars; Ford then said he was staying at UMass, but six days later signed on at Oklahoma State, where he’ll get paid $9M for seven years, not much more than what Davis got at Providence. Makes you wonder what other factors were at play, OSU is expected to have a nice team next winter, but so is UMass.

      8) Toronto-Tampa Bay games this week are being played at Disney’s Wide World of Sports in Lake Buena Vista, as Rays try to become regional franchise for western/central Florida.

      7) Boston’s Clay Buchholz has 0.75 RA in two starts at home, 11.42 in two road starts. Red Sox bullpen allowed 20 runs in 13.1 IP in his starts this season.

      6) Padres have been outscored 28-6 in Justin Germano’s first four starts.

      5) Pirates’ Tom Gorzelanny has started twice against Cubs this season, lasting total of five innings, throwing 150 pitches in those five innings, allowing 14 runs. Not good.

      4) 14 of the 30 major league teams have been sold since 2000.

      3) Umpire Marquez worked the 22-inning Colorado-San Diego game last Thursday, which had to be really tiring, so I was interested in how the next game he worked behind the plate would go. Sure enough, he worked a crisply played 246-pitch Giants-D’back game Monday night. Marquez is pitcher’s ump.

      2) Giants are 1-9 in games started by Zito/Cain, 8-4 in all other games.

      1) Brewers, by the way, are now 8-0 in games started by either Suppan/Sheets, 5-8 in everyone else’s starts.

                NBA Games

Toronto has been behind by 20-17 points after first quarter in first two series games; how about coming to play? Magic was 9-31 from arc in Game 2, after being 13-29 in first game, but they also had 16 offensive rebounds (Raptors had 7). Toronto is 20-49 from arc so far. Home teams are 15-1 in playoffs.

Wizards were hideous in 30-point Game 2 loss, as Big 3 (Butler, Arenas, Jamison) shot combined 10-36- they did get to line 40 times, after being 14-17 in Game 1, but Cavaliers crushed them, and now they have to suck it up and compete at home, or this will be very short series. Three Cavs other than Lebron scored in double figures in Game, 2, very good news for Cleveland.

Speaking of hideous, Utah goes home up 2-0, as Houston just got pushed all over its home arena in first two games, scoring 82-84 points. McGrady has bum shoulder, shot 9-22 in Game 2, while balanced Jazz got double-double from Okur. Utah led at halftime in both games by same exact score, 47-41.

                        2008 NHL playoffs

Not only did Colorado go 0-4 against Red Wings this year, last three times they played Detroit, they got shut out, losing by a combined score of 7-0. Wings outscored Nashville 10-3 in their three home games in first round, winning one of three in Music City. Avalanche won last three games, allowing four goals. In last seven series games, the under is 5-2.

Flyers, Canadiens both survived Game 7's earlier this week, but Montreal's was day earlier and at home, so edge to them. Philly lost six in row vs Habs, dropping 5-2/1-0 games at Bell Centre in this season's series. Flyers scored road OT goal in a Game 7, so they're fired up, but have to be at least a little bit tired. Under is 3-1-2 in Flyers' last six visits to Montreal.
