    Monday NHL Gameday

The Montreal Canadiens and the Philadelphia Flyers will both be looking to advance to the second round of the playoffs with victories on Monday. Here is your NHL Gameday:

Boston Bruins at Montreal Canadiens, 7:00pm ET

The Bruins looked dead in the water when they fell 1-0 to the Habs in Game 4 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series last Tuesday; that defeat put Boston in a 3-1 series hole as the teams headed to raucous Montreal for Game 5. However, the Bruins rolled to a 5-1 victory in that contest, scoring four goals on rookie netminder Carey Price in the third period to grab the win and send the series back down to Boston for Game 6.

That Game 6 was held on Saturday night, and even though the Bruins were coming off a big win they were still sitting on the brink of elimination. And Montreal got some reinforcements for that contest, as Mark Streit, Francis Bouillon, and captain Saku Koivu all returned from their injuries. In fact, Koivu set up Chris Higgins for the game's first goal midway through the first frame and Montreal took a 1-0 lead into the intermission.

The second period saw Phil Kessel and Tomas Plekanec trade goals, which had the Habs leading 2-1 going in the third period. That's where things got wild, as the two teams combined for six goals in 20 minutes. The most important marker, though, was the one scored by Marco Sturm with just over two minutes remaining in the game - that gave the Bruins a 5-4 win and a chance to steal this series with a Game 7 win on Monday.

Price allowed four goals in the third period for the second straight game on Saturday, and overall he stopped just 31 of the 36 Boston shots in that contest. Tim Thomas gave up four goals on 35 shots between the pipes for the Bruins. Kessel and Higgins had two goals apiece for their respective teams, while Koivu picked up two assists in his return to the lineup. Bruins blueliner Aaron Ward also returned from his injury in that contest.

Washington Capitals at Philadelphia Flyers, 7:00pm ET

The Flyers were looking to knock their first-round opponent out of the playoffs with a win on Saturday as well. Philadelphia lost Game 1 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series with the Washington Capitals by a score of 5-4, but from there they rattled off three consecutive victories to hold a 3-1 series lead heading into Game 5 on Saturday.

That meant Philadelphia just had to hold off Alex Ovechkin and company for 60 more minutes to advance to the second round. However, the Caps got the jump on Philly with a first-period goal by Nicklas Backstrom, and they extended their lead to 2-0 with a goal by Sergei Fedorov early in the second period. Vaclav Prospal drew the Flyers to within one with a power-play goal midway through the second, but Alexander Semin restored Washington's two-goal advantage with his marker on the power play in the third period.

Derian Hatcher replied for Philadelphia shortly after Semin scored, but that was as close as the Flyers could get in the 3-2 road defeat. Cristobal Huet stopped 30 of 32 Philly shots between the pipes for Washington, while Flyers netminder Martin Biron gave up three goals on 26 shots in the loss. Ovechkin was held off the scoresheet entirely, and he has just one goal and five points for the Capitals over five postseason games so far.

The Capitals will now get a chance to tie up the series with a win on the road in Game 6 on Monday night. If they do manage to pull off that victory the two teams will head back to Washington for Game 7 - that deciding game is scheduled to be played on Tuesday.

Hot lines: Monday's best MLB bets
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Florida at Pittsburgh (-115, 9 1/2)

If you listened closely enough, you could hear a few snickers from the peanut gallery when the Marlins announced veteran 6-foot-9 pitcher Mark Hendrickson would be their Opening Day starter.

Hendrickson was roughed up in that first start of the year, allowing six runs over five innings in a loss to the Mets, but rebounded to win his next three starts with just four earned runs on his record since then.

So who's laughing now? Nobody's ever going to mistake Hendrickson as an untouchable presence on the mound, but he can be serviceable when he keeps the ball down and doesn't try to do too much. Against Matt Morris and the sinking Pittsburgh Pirates, that's probably all the big lefty will have to do today.

              Pick: Marlins

              San Diego at Houston (-140, 8 1/2)

Padres starter Justin Germano just can't catch a break. The young righty has given up just three runs (all in his last start) over 20 innings so far this season and still hasn't cracked the win column. That's because San Diego has managed just three runs of support for him this season.

However, the offense has to feel a lot better after putting nine runs on the board in a win over the red-hot Diamondbacks on Sunday.

Houston sends Roy Oswalt to the hill on the heels of salvaging a single win over a three-game stretch in Colorado.

              Pick: Padres

Pick 'n' roll: Monday's best NBA bets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Washington at Cleveland (-1 1/2, 186 1/2)

The Washington Wizards have tried talking to LeBron James, knocking him down, and getting in his face whenever possible. So far nothing's worked and you can understand their frustration.

The Cavs, who have beaten Washington in the first round the last two years, aren't backing down. James continues to drive into the paint to take the contact despite his troublesome back and Cleveland’s defense held Washington to fewer than 90 points for third time in the last four meetings between the two clubs on Saturday.

A fully healthy Gilbert Arenas would have a lot to say about that, but he's working his knee into shape even though he did managed 24 points in about 27 minutes of work on Saturday. The problem is that Washington needs those points down the stretch, not in the first quarter.

                Pick: Cavaliers

                Utah at Houston (-1, 183 1/2)

Houston reeled off the second-longest winning streak in NBA history in the regular season and notched 55 wins despite playing without Yao Ming for a quarter of the year. But that was in regular season play.

Utah gave the Rockets a slap in the face in Game 1, scoring 50 points in the paint during a 93-82 victory after oddsmakers set Houston as a one-point favorite in the game. The books have the Rockets favored again tonight in a contest that is a lot more important following Saturday's loss.

"This is a must-win," Tracy McGrady told reporters. "It's tough to win in the regular season, but it's a totally different ballgame. That's a hostile environment. They play extremely well in Utah, on their home court, we don't want to go there 0-2."

Rockets point guard Rafer Alston has Game 3 circled as a possible return date from his pulled hamstring, but Houston needs this one before it looks ahead too much.

                Pick: Houston

Ice picks: Monday's best NHL bets
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Boston at Montreal (-200, 5)

This is exactly what Habs critics were worried about: a pressure cooker, must-win game while their special teams and rookie goaltender are struggling.

Right now, Montreal is just hoping that it can't get any worse after suffering another late collapse on Saturday, while Boston is rolling on momentum. Home ice is obviously a huge deal in Game 7, but the pressure of playing for the Canadiens in Montreal is tough enough to handle in November, let alone a series-deciding tilt in April. The Habs' confidence is already shaken and a poor start to tonight's game could sink them with Boston just itching to clog the neutral zone with an early lead.

Plus, the Bruins are coming into this game loose since nobody expected them to crawl back after falling behind 3-1 in the series. They don't have nearly as much to lose in this situation as Montreal does.

Expect a tentative start to this one as both teams look to avoid season-ending mistakes.

                  Pick: under 5

                  Washington at Philadelphia (-135, 5 1/2)

The Capitals have put up a good fight and it was nice to see some excitement about hockey in D.C., but the end of the line is looming for Washington.

The Flyers were outmatched on the road in Game 5, but they're a better playoff team top-to-bottom than the Caps and will come out banging in front of their home crowd tonight.

"I think a lot of guys [felt] we let them back in the series," Flyers assistant coach Rick Tocchet told reporters after Game 5. "And that is the one game we all wish we could have back."

                  Philadelphia will make amends tonight.

                  Pick: Flyers -135

                    Utah at Houston
The Jazz dominated Game One on the road (93-82) to push their record to 18-3 ATS against winning teams in the second half of the season. Tonight they will look to take advantage of a Houston team that is just 3-8 SU after losing by 10 or more points.
