    Six-pack for Monday

How did Chris Coste last so long in minor leagues?

-- Chris Coste is a rarity, a backup catcher who can hit; he is a .315 career hitter in major leagues in roughly 350 ABs over the last three seasons. Hell, he is a better hitter than some of the DHs in the American League.

-- Not only is Coste from that baseball hotbed of Fargo, ND, he was 33 when he first made the major leagues. Go figure.

-- Pirates, Brewers, Red Sox and Indians all had Coste in their minor league system, but he never made the big league team.

-- How does a .286 career hitter in minor leagues stay in the minors until he is 33? Why didn't he quit? The guy had been in AAA since 2000, only a phone call away.

-- Coste pitched eight innings in minor leagues, allowing four runs, actually going 1-1 in two games for Buffalo in 2002. He played third, first and in the outfield.

-- Now he's an author, and they sell the book at the Phillies' home games. He's an overnight success; it just took him ten or so years to become one.

Monday's List of 13: Odds and ends from a sports weekend

      13) Brewers are 4-1 in extra innings, with all five games ending in 10th inning; they had 3-1 lead in 10th Sunday, but Gagne is struggling; he gave up two solo homers, and Reds won, 4-3.

      12) Mets scored in first inning in seven of last eight games.

      11) Boo Weekley is first golfer since Vaughn Taylor to win the same tournament for his first two Tour wins. Taylor won Reno tournament in 2004-2005.

      10) Weekley's win is first time I've heard tournament winner get booed as he walked up 18th fairway. "They're not booing, well, actually, they are Booing......."

      9) Do you think Eldrick Woods watches golf when he is home on his off weeks?

      8) Monday is Patriots' Day, a holiday in Massachusetts, so the Red Sox have an 11am game with Texas. Boston Marathon is also Monday; can't imagine running 26 miles, I am looking for a fast food place if I drive 15 miles.

      7) White Sox are 3-0 on Sundays this season, outscoring their foes by a 30-2 margin.

      6) Blue Jays cut Frank Thomas, after he made noise about not getting enough at-bats. No idea who would sign him now, but he did get off to rotten starts the last two seasons, and rallied to be productive later in season. He knocked in 114 runs in '06.

      5) Dodgers lost their last six road games, scored three runs in three losses in Atlanta this weekend, and scored a total of four runs in three Sunday games this season.

      4) Funny thing about Billy King getting fired this season down in Philly; he made the trade that sent 76ers on road to being lot better, sending Iverson to Denver, but isn't around to reap the benefits of winning. Life is weird sometimes.

      3) I can't stand the NBA rule where a team calls timeout, then gets the ball in frontcourt. It just seems phony, like an artificial way to make the end of the games dramatic.

      2) Why wouldn't the NBA put Spurs-Suns on at night? For the love of Pete, there is zero drama in the Celtic-Hawk series; put that game on weekend afternoons,, when there ain't that many people watching. Spurs-Suns is by far the most interesting first round series; put those games on at night.

      1) I'm in a fast food place Sunday night and guy in front of me in line has a dime-size hole in each ear lobe, with a plastic life saver-sized thing in each hole. Why would someone do this? It looked like it hurt like hell. To each his own, I guess......

                    NBA Games

Gilbert Arenas was 4-4 from arc in first 14:00 of Game 1, but his low percentage shots caught up to Wiz, who were 6-24 on arc for game. Lebron James is best player in NBA, yet Wiz players stupidly said he is overrated. Think Washington has the better team, but Lebron is a force; Ilgauskus had 22 in Game 1- if the Cavs' complimentary guys score well, Cavs are tough to beat.

Houston's starting guards shot combined 10-36 in Game 1, with Alston out for at least one more game and Yao Ming in a suit, McGrady has to carry Rockets, but he is dragging his shoulder around. Huge game for Houston, which needs win here to tie series before heading to Utah. Jazz shot 52% in Game 1, took 13 offensive rebounds-- this is gravy game for them.

Washington Wizards at Cleveland Cavaliers [TNT | 7 PM ET]

Wizards: Washington certainly had plenty of chances to win Game 1, and the team's players spent most of the day between games thinking about that. “We had our fair share of opportunities,” Wizards swingman Caron Butler said. “We just didn’t capitalize on them. You’ve got to finish a team like that when you’ve got them down because they have a superstar who in the fourth quarter can really score some points.” Washington made only 4-of-20 shots from the field in the fourth quarter and missed 10 straight shots in the last 4:38.

Wizards are 1-4 SU & ATS in their last 5 road games.
Wizards are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 Monday games.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 92

Cavs (-1.5, O/U 186.5): Cleveland star LeBron James took a physical pounding in Game 1 yet still got the best of the Wizards, scoring a game-high 32 points to help beat them for the seventh straight time in the playoffs. “I have no problem getting hit,” James said. “But there’s a difference between a foul and a LeBron foul. If that’s what their game plan is, I have to be able to get back up and continue to let my game speak for itself.”

Cavs are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 home games.
Cavs are 5-2 SU & ATS in the last 7 meetings.
The UNDER is 17-5 in Cleveland's last 22 games overall.
The UNDER is 15-6 in the last 21 meetings at Cleveland.

Key Injuries - G Sasha Pavlovic (7 ppg; ankle) is OUT.

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 95

Utah Jazz at Houston Rockets [TNT | 9:30 PM ET]

Jazz: Utah was able to dominate the Rockets inside without Yao Ming there, scoring 50 points in the paint. Carlos Boozer led the way for the Jazz with 20 points and 16 rebounds, and they would love nothing more than to go home up 2-0. “We don’t want to just come here and be happy to win one game,” Utah point guard Deron Williams said. “We want to try to put a little more pressure on them and give ourselves a cushion.”

Jazz are 8-1 ATS in their last 9 games overall.
Jazz are 8-1 ATS in the last 9 meetings.
Jazz are 9-0 ATS in their last 9 Monday games.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 91

Rockets (-1, O/U 183.5): Houston star Tracy McGrady continues to struggle with his shot and had put in some extra time after practice since he had made just 35.5 percent from the field since the end of the team's 22-game winning streak. The results did not pay off in Game 1, as McGrady made just 7-of-21 shots to finish with 20 points. “I can be as aggressive as I want to be,” McGrady said. “But if they double-team me, get the ball out of my hands and we’re not making shots, we’re in for a long night.”

Rockets are 16-6-1 ATS in their last 22 home games.
The UNDER is 5-1 in Houston's last 6 games overall.
The UNDER is 10-2 in Houston's last 12 games vs. Northwest Division.

Key Injuries - G Rafer Alston (13 ppg; hamstring) is OUT.

                            Opening Round

Bruins, Canadiens are playing in a Game 7 for 7th time, with the Canadiens 4-2 in first six, 1-2 in last three. For once, momentum sits with B's, who won last two games to even series against a rival they had lost to 11 times in row prior to this series. Bruins scored four goals in third period in each of last two games, so their young players still have fresh legs. Pressure on Habs.

Washington forced Game 6 with 3-2 win in Game, 5, when they outshot Flyers 20-11 in first two periods, then withstood Flyers putting 21 pucks on goal in third period, scoring just once over last 20:00. Over is 12-5 in last 17 series games. Caps had won its last four games at Philly before losing twice in this series. The home team won last three series games, after losing five of the previous six games.
