    Six-pack for Thursday

-- We put a man on the moon almost 40 years ago, but I can’t get the NFL Network on my cable system. It makes no sense. -- You know the Nationals are lame when their #1 starter (Odalis Perez) is guy they picked off scrap heap in February.

-- Intriguing NFL matchup is Week 17, the Kiffin Bowl. Son Lane brings his Raiders to Tampa to play the Bucs; Lane’s dad Monte is Bucs’ defensive coordinator. No word on who mom Kiffin will be rooting for.

-- Cleveland Browns were last on Monday Night Football in December of ’03.

-- Only five NFL teams won’t be on primetime in 2008, and we’ll toss out Lions, who get annual slot on Thanksgiving Day, leaving Falcons-Chiefs-Rams-Dolphins as four teams NFL deems least attractive to prime-time audiences.

-- My godson Tom moved to 4-0 pitching in high school on Long Island as Kellenberg beat St Mary's, 8-2. He struck out four hitters in six innings for the 8-3 Firebirds.

Thursday's Armadillo's Den: Around the bases in the AL

Orioles -- Despite their strong start, Baltimore pitchers are still 12th in AL with 4.67 ERA; Cabrera looks like a talented pitcher but his numbers are awful. Bedard is on DL, so that trade looks like a steal for the O's.

Red Sox -- Will be interesting to see if they re-sign Varitek this winter; they were hesitant to give him four-year contract after the '04 season. 36-year old catchers don't have great history.

White Sox -- Joe Crede leads MLB with 16 RBI; they're 9-5, 5-2 on road, off to solid start. Pierzynski is leading AL in hitting at .405, but team is still hitting just .249, T11th in league.

Indians -- Cliff Lee leads AL with a 2-0, 0.61 mark, but he beat the offensively-challenged A's in both starts, so don't get too happy about it. Tribe bullpen blew four saves, most in AL.

Tigers -- Verlander is 0-2, 6.52, Rogers 0-3, 6.75, but offense is starting to pick up. Curious to see if they'll add veteran pitcher later on. Signing Fossum to minor league deal won't cut it.

Royals -- Greinke has 0.75 ERA, Bannister 0.86, with the exact same pitching coach and catcher they had last year. Could be the new manager Hillman has made a huge difference.

Angels -- Hitting .301 as team with league-high 20 HRs before Wednesday's game; with Lackey, Escobar hurt, will need to hit all season long, to keep step ahead of the improved Mariners.

Twins -- Pitchers walked only 23 hitters going into Wednesday action, 15 fewer than any other team. Someone has to explain to me how they're building a new stadium without retractable roof- they're going to freeze their butts off in April/May.

Bronx -- A $200M payroll and your catcher is Chad Moeller? It might be a long summer in the Bronx if Phil Hughes doesn't do lot better than his last two starts. With their pitching and way they hit, it must be great place to be a vendor, though.

A's -- You never hear anything about Curt Young as a pitching coach, but what a terrific job he does every year. A's are only MLB team to use seven starting pitchers already this season.

Mariners -- Bedard, Putz are on DL, pitchers allowed 17 home runs, 3rd-most in AL. Felix Hernandez went whole way for win Wednesday, which reflects on their bullpen. McLaren wants his starting pitchers to go deeper into games.

Rays -- Best thing they've done is shore up bullpen; they don't get pounded in innings 6-8 anymore. Now if they can just get Kazmir and Garza healthy, they might be an interesting team. They also have to start to believe they can win.

Rangers -- Pitchers have walked 59, struck out 67, by far worst ratio in AL. They've allowed 12 unearned runs, most in league. Milton Bradley walked five times Wednesday night, with first walk coming in seventh inning- they won 7-5 in 14 innings.

Blue Jays -- With a payroll of over $100M, they're expected to contend this year, but they lose too many games like tonight, giving up winning run in 14th on wild pitch, after they had to use starting pitcher Burnett in relief.

Justin Verlander is looking for his first win of the season (0-2, 6.51) and should benefit from a Tiger attack that has suddenly come alive during a three-game winning streak. Hot Lines: Thursday's best MLB bets
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago White Sox at Baltimore (-110, 9)

It's hard to get a handle on what to expect from Chicago's Gavin Floyd. After a bad year last season, Ozzie Guillen didn't loose faith in the 25-year-old starter, and with two wins to start this year, Floyd is looking like the pitcher everyone thought he'd be when he was drafted fourth overall by the Phillies in 2001.

To give you a better idea of how good he's been, he actually had a no-hitter going into the eighth inning against the Tigers on Saturday. The Orioles are slumping a bit offensively recently (13 runs in last five games) and they've been having a particularly tough time hitting right-handers this season (.238). If Floyd maintains his form, this should be an easy one for the ChiSox.

                        Pick: White Sox

                        Atlanta at Florida (+140, 9)

They don't call it gambling for nothing - sometimes you have to take a chance. Which is fine as long as you pick your spots. Like this game, for example.

It just doesn't make sense to pay -160 for a road team when that team has lost six of its last eight games, is hitting just .232 in its current three-game losing streak, and is getting next to nothing from its biggest offensive weapon. Mark Texiera is currently batting .204 with two homers and six RBIs in 14 games.

John Smoltz has been pitching well for the Braves, but you can't expect the old fella to go too deep and the Marlins have the better bullpen numbers to this point. Florida's Ricky Nolasco isn't a regular starter and he wasn't great in his lone start this season, but he?s no stranger to the starting role and he has a 1.99 career ERA against the Braves.

                        Pick: Marlins

Ice picks: Thursday's best NHL bets
                          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                          Colorado vs. Minnesota (-125, 5)

The Avs broke a string of three straight 3-2 games in this series when they hammered the Wild 5-1 in Game 4 in Denver. And then things got ugly.

The Wild started gooning and gave up 13 pp's to the Avs. Derek Boogard got tossed in the third with a misconduct and Stephane Veilleux mucked it up with just about everybody. Veilleux also served Paul Stastny with a nasty hit from behind that easily could have caused some damage.

This is playoff hockey. You might win a game with ease on the scoreboard, but it's tough to walk away from those ones unscathed.

The series now turns back to Minnesota where Colorado should have a tougher time putting up goals.

                          Pick: Wild -125

                          Anaheim vs. Stars (-125, 5)

The Ducks looked like a new team in Game 3 when they topped the Stars 4-2 as +108 underdogs.

The Stars looked a little sluggish in the loss, but a huge key for Anaheim was special teams. The power play has been the biggest factor in this series all season long and the Ducks managed to at least tie that battle with the Stars when both teams scored two power play goals in Game 3.

Dallas had outscored the Ducks 6-1 on the power play in the first two games when the Stars jumped to a 2-0 series lead.

Anaheim's PP should get another boost tonight if Corey Perry returns. Their leading scorer (29 goals) has been out since early March after getting his a tendon in his leg sliced open by a skate.

                          Pick: Ducks +110
