    Six-pack for Wednesday

-- Phillies scored four in bottom of the ninth to stun Astros 4-3, the kind of win that gets teams started on hot streaks.

-- As fast a left-handed hitter as Carl Crawford is, he didn't have one bunt single all last season. If he were an expert at bunting, he'd add 10-20 points to his batting average.

-- Mets grounded into double plays in five straight innings Sunday, the first time they've ever done that.

-- Jeff Kent saw seven pitches on his first at-bat Tuesday, after he saw a total of five pitches in four at-bats Monday.

-- Why are Cowboys trying so hard to get Pacman Jones? Is he worth the trouble?

-- I'm puzzled a lot, but Providence hiring Keno Davis makes me wonder if anyone with Friars knows what they're doing. Look at the roster of coaches in Big East-- you'd choose a guy with one year at Drake over Fran Fraschilla? I think not.

Wednesday's List of 13: Our first look at '08 NFL schedule

      13) I'm not big on having division games in Week 1, since the opening day games are special anyway, but the NFL doesn't agree; half of the 16 Week 1 games are divisional rivalries. In Week 16, there are nine divisional games. Doesn't seem right.

      12) Bears are only team that will play three straight weeks on the road, which they have to be just thrilled about.

      11) NFL Network game Thanksgiving night is Cardinals-Eagles from Philly. Thats an awful lot of faith in Redbirds to be good.

      10) Surprised the Packers got four prime-time games, although ten of their other 12 games are 1pm starts, meaning FOX didn't want any part of them. Aaron Rodgers better be good.

      9) The appeal of Vince Young-- Titans get a Thanksgiving Day game in Detroit. Other Turkey Day game: Seattle at Dallas.

      8) Redskins' coach Jim Zorn is beloved in Seattle; he brings his Washington team to the Pacific Northwest Nov 23, to face the team he once starred for and then was an assistant coach for.

      7) Dolphins have to be happy they got picked to play in Bills' home game in Toronto; it ain't often warm in Buffalo on Dec 7, but it will be in Rogers Centre, where they have a dome.

      6) Chargers-Saints in London in late October; don't want any complaints about teams going over there to play-- a team that played in London last year won the Super Bowl. No excuses. That said, San Diego does have four games in the eastern time zone, plus the London game

      5) Dallas doesn't play the Giants until Week 9, same day Colts play the Patriots, Kurt Warner goes back to St Louis, and the Ravens go back to Cleveland. First Sunday after World Series, when league gets 100% of the media's attention.

      4) Cleveland Browns open at home with Dallas, then Steelers; nation's eyes will be on Dawg Pound-- Browns are scheduled for five primetime games, an awful lot.

      3) Bill Belichick can polish up his Spynoculars when the Rams visit Foxboro in Week 8; by then, the league should know all about whether the Patriots filmed the Rams' walkthrough just before the Super Bowl in January 2002. New England is on the national airwaves five times in their last twelve games, going to San Diego, Indianapolis and Seattle.

      2) Colts also have five primetime games, hosting Chicago and New England, then visiting Chargers and division rivals Titans and Jaguars. They also have a Week 10 game at Pittsburgh, a 4:15 start, so basically another primetime contest.

      1) I'm not sure if this is possible, but wouldn't it be good, with four teams in each division, to have last three weeks of season be all divisional games? Wouldn't this create more drama?

Penguins are dominating series, leading 3-0, outshooting Sens by 127-90, going 5-19 on power play, while Ottawa is just 1-11. Penguins had lost 12 of last 17 vs Ottawa before this series, so this is big turnaround for them. Pittsburgh outscored Senators 5-1 in third period of games in this series.

Visiting team won all three Devil-Ranger games, as New Jersey scored from corner on deflection in OT to win Game 3 and keep series close, just second win in 11 games vs Rangers this year. Four of last five series games went over total. Madden was 6-1 on faceoffs vs Drury in Sunday night's win.

Home team won all three Detroit-Nashville games, as Predators scored two goals in 0:09 span of second period in win Monday night. Red Wings are 4-6 in last ten visits to Music City, with last three played three all going over total. Radek Bonk won 11 of his 13 faceoffs for Nashville.

              National Hockey League - Gameday

              NHL
              Gameday

              Wednesday, April 16

              NHL Gameday

Sidney Crosby and the Penguins can advance to the second round of the postseason with a victory versus the Senators on Wednesday night. Here's your NHL Gameday . . .

Pittsburgh Penguins at Ottawa Senators, 7:00pm ET

The Senators had high hopes for Game 3 on Monday night - they were playing their first home date of the playoffs, and injured forwards Jason Spezza and Daniel Alfredsson were both going to be in the lineup. However, none of that made much of a difference as the Penguins still cruised to a 4-1 victory. Ottawa actually opening the scoring with a Nick Foligno goal early in the second period, but Maxime Talbot tied the game before the end of that frame. Pittsburgh then took control in the third period with goals from Crosby, Jordan Staal, and Marian Hossa. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 33 of 34 Ottawa shots in that win, while Martin Gerber allowed four goals on 38 shots between the pipes for the Senators. Pittsburgh can now sweep the first-round series with a second straight road win on Wednesday night, and send the Sens out to the golf course.

New Jersey Devils at New York Rangers, 7:00pm ET

The Devils dropped the first two games of their first-round series with the Rangers in their own rink, so they needed a road win in Game 3 on Sunday to get back into the set. And a John Madden overtime goal in that contest gave them that important victory, so they now trail only 2-1 in the best-of-seven series. New Jersey's Sergei Brylin and New York's Brandon Dubinsky exchanged goals in the first period on Sunday, while Sean Avery (for the Rangers) and Patrik Elias and Zach Parise (for the Devils) tallied in the second period. Dubinsky then picked up his second goal of the game in the third period to force overtime, but Madden later potted the winner. Henrik Lundqvist stopped 29 of 33 shots for New York that day, while Martin Brodeur made 27 saves for New Jersey. Jaromir Jagr finally got going with three assists for the Rangers in the 4-3 loss.

Detroit Red Wings at Nashville Predators, 9:00pm ET

Like the Rangers, the Red Wings had a chance to take a commanding 3-0 lead in their first-round series in Game 3 (which they played on Monday). And like the Rangers, they couldn't quite get the job done. Detroit took a 2-0 lead in that game against the Predators, but the opposition came back to win the game 5-3 at home. Kris Draper and Jiri Hudler opened the scoring for the Red Wings, and Alexander Radulov and David Legwand (returning from injury) tied up the game by the end of the second period. Pavel Datsyuk then put Detroit ahead again early in the third, but the Preds got three unanswered goals from Ryan Suter, Jason Arnott, and Martin Erat (into an empty net) to secure the victory. Dan Ellis stopped 23 of 26 Detroit shots on the night, while Dominik Hasek surrendered four goals on 28 shots between the pipes for the Wings in the loss.

The Predators/Red Wings and Rangers/Devils series will both continue on Friday night, while Ottawa and Pittsburgh will play again on Saturday if that series goes past Game 4.

The Twins look to bounce back from two late-inning collapses in Detroit behind starter Livan Hernandez, who has won half the team's games (3) with a solid 2.57 ERA. Minnesota is the home underdog pick (+105) according to Dunkel, which has the Twins favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: Minnesota (+105). Here are all of today's games.

                              Wednesday, April 16

Ice picks: Wednesday's best NHL bets
                              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                              Pittsburgh vs. Ottawa (+145, 5 1/2)

The fourth win of a series is the toughest one to get, so they say. They apparently have not seen the 2008 Ottawa Senators.

Even with the return of captain Daniel Alfredsson last game, the Sens were outplayed for the third straight game in this series. The Pens covered the puckline for the third straight game also and Pittsburgh bettors continue to watch their bankrolls grow.

Game 4 shouldn't be much different. The Sens just look like a team that wants the season to be over, which is obvious by the abundance of silly penalties they're taking. Ottawa has taken 19 penalties through three games and Pittsburgh has scored five PP goals.

                              Pick: Pittsburgh -165

New Jersey vs. New York (-145, 4 1/2)

After Rangers forward Sean Avery screened goalie Martin Brodeur in an unorthodox face-first manner in Game 3, the NHL responded by altering the rulebook. Officials can now call unsportsmanlike conduct at their discretion for just such incidents.

Avery has taken a lot of flak for his actions, but we're of the opinion in the newsroom that any time you can single-handedly get the NHL to alter its rulebook, you've done something brilliant.

Avery won't get a chance to face-guard Brodeur again this series, unless he wants a penalty, but that doesn’t mean the Devils are going to have an easier time tonight. This has been an intense series between two great rivals.

                              Pick: Rangers
