Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend

      13) NHL playoffs are an underrated event; great effort, really, really tough guys. Watch as these defensemen slide to block a 100 mph slap shot from the point-- thats a very hard puck they are sliding to block. Dude on the Flyers took a puck below belt in Friday's game and had to go to the hospital.

      12) Bruins beat Montreal in OT Sunday night, after losing the night before in OT at Molson Centre, ending a 13-game skid vs the Canadiens. Tim Thomas had a couple spectacular saves in the overtime, before Savard won game, keeping series close.

      11) Denver Nuggets hammered Houston Sunday night, making Golden State's visit to Phoenix Monday a must-win for Golden State, if they're going to make the playoffs. Pretty sad for good team like Warriors to miss playoffs after nice season, but that is what happens with the west so much better than the east.

      10) Not much drama at The Masters, which is now high on the Mute Button List; can't take the religious imagery used by the announcers as they describe a golf course. People who have been there tell me how pretty it is and I'm sure it is, but it is still a golf course. Listening to TV guys, you'd think it was freakin' St Patrick's Cathedral or the Sistine Chapel.

      9) Mets were 47-34 on road last year, just 41-40 at home; so far this year, they're 3-3 at home, 2-3 on the road. Unimpressive.

      8) Baseball broadcasts are overloaded with sponsored pieces; the replay of the first run in every Met game is sponsored by Dunkin' Donuts, which seems to have a store every mile or two here in Albany. Lot of coffeee drinkers in this town.

      7) Tigers' month from hell continued with an 11-0 loss and an injury to Carlos Guillen. Detroit is 2-10 and sinking fast; they're already 5.5 games behind the White Sox in AL Central.

      6) Greg Maddux beat Dodgers 1-0, but only tossed five innings facing 18 batters; weird to see 1-0 game where neither starting pitcher made it into the sixth inning.

      5) Francisco Liriano made his first start since 2006 Sunday, in dismal 37-degree weather in Kansas City, so we'll give him a pass on a subpar performance; he pitches in Metrodome next.

      4) Brian Bannister pitched complete game for Royals; they got Bannister straight up from Mets for Ambiorex Burgos, which is beginning to look like one of the ripoffs of the decade.

      3) With the NFL Draft less than two weeks away, I'm hoping this is the week they release the 2008 NFL schedule. Been long while since the schedule hasn't been released by this time.

      2) Name of the Night: Jonathan Cheechoo of San Jose Sharks.

      1) I'm mystified why any baseball umpire wouldn't call a lot of strikes; the game is so much more fun to watch when the game is flowing. You get lot of guys taking pitches and deep counts, the fielding suffers, and the game is simply less attractive. Get the hitters swinging the bat, that should be the objective.

                            National Hockey League - Gameday

                            NHL
                            Gameday

                            Monday, April 14

The National Hockey League's playoffs continue on Monday night, with matchups taking place in Ottawa, Nashville, and Denver. Here's a look at them all in your NHL Gameday:

Pittsburgh Penguins at Ottawa Senators, 7:00pm ET

Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin are the Penguins' elite scorers, and they combined for 10 points over the first two games of this Eastern Conference quarterfinal series. Dany Heatley and Jason Spezza are the Senators' elite scorers, and they combined for one point in those same two contests. So guess which team has the 2-0 lead in the series? The Pens will be looking to take a 3-0 stranglehold on the best-of-seven set when these teams hit the ice in Ottawa on Monday night. Pittsburgh cruised to a 4-0 win at home in the series opener last Wednesday, and they held on for a 5-3 win in Game 2 on Friday night. Ryan Malone scored twice late in the third period to give the Pens that Game 2 win, while the Sens got a 49-save performance from goaltender Martin Gerber. Captain Daniel Alfredsson remains very questionable for Monday with his knee injury.

Detroit Red Wings at Nashville Predators, 7:30pm ET

The Predators were a trendy pick to pull off a first-round upset over the top-seeded Red Wings, but they haven't been able to put up much of a fight against the West's best through the first two games of their quarterfinal series. Henrik Zetterberg scored twice in the series opener last Thursday to lead Detroit to a 3-1 home win, with Dominik Hasek stopping 19 of 20 Nashville shots in that contest. Jordin Tootoo had the lone Predators goal on the night. Tomas Holmstrom had a goal and an assist on Saturday afternoon to lead the Red Wings to a 4-2 victory, with Hasek stopping 25 of 27 shots in that contest. Tootoo and Alexander Radulov scored Nashville's goals, while Dan Ellis took the loss between the pipes for the second straight game. Predators forward David Legwand is day-to-day with a foot injury, while Scott Nichol broke his thumb and is out indefinitely.

Minnesota Wild at Colorado Avalanche, 10:00pm ET

The tightest series so far in the playoffs has been this one between the Wild and the Avalanche, with the first two contests being decided in overtime. Joe Sakic was the OT hero last Wednesday, scoring 11 minutes into the first extra frame to give the Avs a 3-2 victory in the series opener. Kurt Sauer and Ryan Smyth also scored for Colorado, while Mikko Koivu and Todd Fedoruk replied for the Wild. Jose Theodore outduelled Niklas Backstrom between the pipes. The tables were turned on Friday night, however, as Minnesota d-man Keith Carney potted an overtime marker to give his squad a 3-2 win. Koivu and Pavol Demitra had the other Wild goals on the night. Peter Forsberg opened the scoring for Colorado, and Milan Hejduk sent the game into overtime with a late tally in the third period. Wild forward Mark Parrish is listed as day-to-day with a head injury.

The Avalanche and Wild are back in action with Game 4 on Tuesday night, while the Pens/Sens and Wings/Predators series will resume on Wednesday. Four other sets will continue on Tuesday, with Montreal at Boston, Washington at Philadelphia, Anaheim at Dallas, and San Jose at Calgary. The Devils and Rangers return to the ice Wednesday.
