          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
          Tips and Trends
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Cubs at Philadelphia Phillies [TBS | 1:35 PM ET]

Cubs: Cubs starter Jason Marquis was shaky in his first start of the season. He pitched 5+ innings and allowed 5 runs on 8 hits against the Astros. Marquis is 4-3 with 4.64 ERA against the Phillies in his career, but has been battling the flu all week.

Cubs are 13-6 in their last 19 games as an underdog.

          Key Injuries - NONE

          PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Phillies (-125, O/U 10.5): Phillies starter Jamie Moyer is 1-0 on the season with a 4.66 ERA. Moyer was very shaky in his first start of the year (3.2 IP 6 runs), but held the Mets down to just 2 earned runs over 6 innings pitched in his last appearance. Moyer is 2-0 with a 3.75 ERA against the Cubs in his career.

Phillies are 6-2 in Moyer's last 8 starts as a favorite.

Key Injuries - SS Jimmy Rollins (ankle) is questionable.

          PROJECTED SCORE: 6

Colorado Rockies at Arizona Diamondbacks [4:10 PM ET]

Rockies: Rockies starter Aaron Cook pitched 7 effective innings against the Braves in his most recent start, to bounce back from a loss to the Cardinals. However Cook had just 3 road wins all last season, and holds a 5.13 career ERA against the Diamondbacks.

Rockies are 2-7 in their last 9 games as an underdog.

          Key Injuries - NONE

          PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Diamondbacks (-130, O/U 9.5): The Diamondbacks will look to continue their winning ways against the NL West as they hand the ball to Edgar Gonzalez. The right-hander is 1-0 on the season allowing just 1 run over 5 innings pitched against these Rockies last time out. However, Gonzalez holds a 7.29 career ERA against Colorado, which is including that strong appearance.

Diamondbacks are 15-4 in their last 19 home games.

          Key Injuries - NONE

          PROJECTED SCORE: 5

San Diego Padres at Los Angeles Dodgers [4:10 PM ET]

Padres: Padres veteran starter Greg Maddux will try and make his presence felt a little better this time around at Dodgers Stadium. In Maddux’s last appearance in LA against these Dodgers saw him allow 6 runs on 10 hits in just 3+ innings of work. However, the right-hander has been solid this season allowing just 4 earned runs over 13 innings pitched, and does hold a 2.94 career ERA against the Dodgers.

Padres are 9-3 in Maddux's last 12 starts.

          Key Injuries - NONE

          PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Dodgers (-125, O/U 9): Dodgers starter Chad Billingsley is off to a horrible start this season, allowing 5 earned runs in just 4+ innings of work. Last year was Billingsley’s coming out party with 11 total wins while showing signs of dominance. The right-hander is 4-1 with a 2.08 ERA against these Padres over his career.

The UNDER is 9-4 in Billingsley's last 13 on grass.

          Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 4 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox [ESPN | 8:05 PM ET]

Yankees: Yankees starter Phil Hughes hasn’t been horrible, but yet hasn’t been brilliant either in his 2 starts this season. Overall Hughes is 0-1 with a 5.00 ERA and gave up 3 runs in just three-plus innings of work last time out against the Royals. The right-hander blamed his poor performance on the weather. This will be his first career appearance against the Red Sox..

Yankees are 17-5 in their last 22 Sunday games.

Key Injuries - SS Derek Jeter (quadricep) is questionable.

          PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Red Sox (-150, O/U 10): Red Sox starter Daisuke Matsuzaka has been money in 3 starts this season. Boston is 3-0 in those starts with Matsuzaka allowing just 3 earned runs over 18+ innings. However, Daisuke has had his struggles against the Yanks, he is 2-1 in his career but holds a lofty 6.12 ERA in 4 meetings..

Red Sox are 19-7 in their last 26 games on grass.

Key Injuries - 3B Mike Lowell (thumb) has been placed on the 15-day DL.

          PROJECTED SCORE: 5

              Major League Baseball – Gameday

              MLB

              Sunday, April 13

              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
              Gameday
              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Sunday MLB Gameday

The Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees conclude their first series of the season on Sunday night. Here's a look at that matchup and three others in your MLB Gameday . . .

Milwaukee Brewers at New York Mets, 1:10pm ET
Jeff Suppan (1-0, 2.03 ERA) vs. Oliver Perez (1-0, 0.00 ERA)

Suppan has pitched well in both of his outings so far this season, but he only has one win to show for his efforts. In his first start of the season the righthander held the Cubs to two earned runs on six hits over 6 1-3 innings of work in a victory. Last time out, against the Reds, he surrendered one earned run over seven innings in a no-decision.

Perez has taken to the mound twice this season, and he has get to give up an earned run. The lefthander began the year by blanking the Marlins on five hits over six innings to pick up a win, and he struck out eight batters in that game. Against the Phillies in his last outing Perez was stuck with a no-decision despite tossing 5 2-3 scoreless innings.

Los Angeles Angels at Seattle Mariners, 4:10pm ET
Joe Saunders (1-0, 0.56 ERA) vs. Erik Bedard (1-0, 3.27 ERA)

Saunders has been effective for the Angels so far this season, which has helped them cope with the absence of both John Lackey and Kelvim Escobar. The lefthander went eight strong innings against the Twins in his first outing, allowing no earned runs and four hits. Saunders then gave up just one earned run in eight innings against the Tribe.

Bedard wasn't as good in his second outing as he was in his first, but he still managed to pick up his first win. The lefthander opened his season by surrendering just one earned run on three hits over five innings against Texas in a no-decision, but he grabbed the win against the Rays this week when he gave up three runs in six innings.

San Diego Padres at Los Angeles Dodgers, 4:10pm ET
Greg Maddux (1-0, 2.77 ERA) vs. Chad Billingsley (0-1, 9.64 ERA)

Maddux picked up his first win of the season on Monday against the Giants, holding the opposition to one earned run on three hits over seven innings of work. The veteran righthander also struck out five batters in that contest. In his first start of the season Maddux allowed three earned runs over six innings in a no-decision against Houston.

Billingsley was used as a reliever in his first two outings of the season (due to weather-related delays), and he didn't perform well in his first start of the year on Tuesday. The righthander was knocked around for four earned runs on five hits over just 2 1-3 innings against the Diamondbacks in that contest, walking three batters and fanning only one.

New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox, 8:05pm ET
Phil Hughes (0-1, 5.00 ERA) vs. Daisuke Matsuzaka (2-0, 1.47 ERA)

Hughes is still looking for his first win of the season, and he'll also be looking to bounce back from a bad outing when he pitches Sunday; the righthander gave up three earned runs on six hits over three innings in a loss to the Royals on Tuesday. In his first outing, against the Blue Jays, Hughes allowed two earned runs in six innings in a no-decision.

Matsuzaka has pitched well in each of his three outings so far this year, and he's managed to strike out 22 batters over his 18 1-3 innings of work. Dice-K is coming off a strong outing against the Tigers in which he tossed 6 2-3 scoreless innings, and gave up just four hits. The righthander has two wins and a no-decision in his three '08 starts.

Ice picks: Sunday's best NHL bets
                            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                            Philadelphia vs. Washington (-150, 5 1/2)

If the Flyers make only one rule for themselves in this series, it should be this: don't screw with the puck when Alex Ovechkin is on the ice.

That's what defenseman Lasse Kukkonen did right in front of his own net with about 4 1/2 minutes left in Game 1. The Russian sniper swiped the rubber and fired it home before Kukkonen knew his stick was lifted.

                            Five-four Caps. One-zip series lead.

Other than that, Philly did a great job of limiting the Capitals' 65-goal man. That was Ovechkin's first shot of the game, but it just goes to show you that you can't give him anything.

That one mistake was the big difference in Friday night's contest and you can expect the series to stay that tight throughout. One small error can cost you the game.

                            Pick: Philadelphia +140

                            San Jose vs. Calgary (+110, 4 1/2)

Penalties. They hurt. Especially when you get 10 of them in a game, including six in a row over a span of 10 minutes in the second period.

The Flames didn't really give themselves a chance to win in Game 2 with so much time spent in the box. San Jose scored one PP goal and Evgeni Nabokov kicked out everything in nets for a 2-0 San Jose win.

The series is now tied heading back to Calgary, where the home crowd has developed a reputation for being one of the loudest in the league in recent playoffs.

If the Flames hope to take advantage, they'll need to get more pucks to the net. Over the past three meetings with San Jose, going back to the regular season, the Sharks have out-shot Calgary by an average of 21 shots. You need some pretty incredible goaltending if you're going to overcome those numbers and win a series.

                            Pick: over 4 1/2

Pick 'n' Roll: Sunday's best NBA bets
                              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                              Toronto at Detroit (-6 1/2, 185)

The early ABC national TV game features a matchup that has been nightmarish for Toronto in recent years. The Raptors have lost nine straight at the Palace of Auburn Hills, held under 88 points per game during that skid. Toronto did beat Detroit soundly when these two teams met two weeks ago, and the Raptors come in with some momentum after reeling off back-2-back blowout wins over the Bucks and Nets in their last two games. But Toronto has only two wins over opponents with winning records in the last two months, struggling repeatedly against quality foes. Meanwhile, Flip Saunders continues to give the Pistons veteran starters limited playing time down the stretch, developing his role players off the bench.

                              Pick: Detroit

                              Orlando at Chicago (-4, 202 1/2)

The Bulls traded Ben Wallace and have lost Drew Gooden for the rest of the season with an abdominal strain. Their frontcourt depth is extremely limited right now with Tyrus Thomas, Joakim Noah and Aaron Gray (two rookies and a second-year player) getting the lion's share of low post minutes. No surprise, then, that the Bulls have been outrebounded by an average of nine boards per game in their last five contests, very bad news against Dwight Howard and the Magic. The Magic have won all three previous meetings between these teams this year, including a 32 point blowout earlier in the week. But Orlando hasn't played with much passion down the stretch, just 4-6 SU in their last ten games, losing outright as a favorite on five separate occasions during that span.

                              Pick: Orlando

                              Houston at Denver (-6, 209)

The Rockets could be without their premier defensive stopper on Sunday. Shane Battier, arguably the best wing defender in the league, missed their last game and is questionable against the Nuggets with a foot injury. Battier has been primarily responsible for containing Carmelo Anthony in all three previous meetings this year, holding 'Melo to a combined 28-69 shooting. Houston covered the spread in all three of those games, and all three games stayed well Under the total in regulation. In fact, the Rockets are 7-1 ATS against the Nuggets in the last eight meetings, winning outright in Denver on three separate occasions. And the Rockets are 16-6 ATS in their last 22 on the road, consistency outperforming the expectations of the betting marketplace in hostile environments.

                              Pick: Denver
