Hot lines: Saturday's best MLB bets
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Yankees vs. Red Sox (-155, 9 1/2)

As long as oddsmakers keep setting totals around the double-digit mark for Yankee games, we might as well keep riding the under.

The over/under is now 1-10 in New York games this season following last night's 4-1 victory over Boston. Tonight Josh Beckett looks to shake off a poor first outing and Mike Mussina takes the mound for the Yanks.

It is supposed to be cool with some wind blowing out toward the green monster and there's a good chance of rain in Boston, so keep an eye on the weather here.

      Pick: under 9 1/2

      Florida vs. Houston (+120, 9 1/2)

Somebody must have forgotten to tell the young Marlins they weren't supposed to be any good this year. They've jumped out to a 7-3 start and they've won more money for bettors than any team in the majors so far with more than six units (over $600 if you?re betting $100 each game).

Florida has been doing it with hitting and the club has scored 10 runs in three of its outings during a current four-game winning streak. Last night the Marlins set a club record by smashing out six long balls against the Astros and their respectable arm of Roy Oswalt.

The best part for the Marlins is they are getting production from many sources. Five different players hit dingers last night and seven Fish have multiple homers on the season. Mike Jacobs is tied for the lead in the bigs with five home runs.

      Pick: over 9 1/2

      Toronto vs. Texas (+135, 9 1/2)

Defense is something we tend to overlook when it comes to capping baseball. So you may not have realized the Rangers lead the majors in errors with 12 after committing three in an 8-5 loss to the Jays on Friday.

According to a report in the Dallas Morning News, the Rangers "booted, bobbled and misplayed balls all over the field." The end result wasn't a good one against a team that loves to run the bags aggressively and Toronto's Greg Zaun even stole home on a double-steal play with the ball thrown to second base.

Luis Mendoza makes his first start of the season for the Rangers and just the fourth of his major league career today. You can't think his nerves will be calmed any by what he saw yesterday.

      Pick: Toronto -145

Ice picks: Saturday's best NHL bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

          Boston vs. Montreal (-210, 5)

There are times when the regular season series doesn't matter come playoff time and there are times when a team goes 8-0 against the other.

That's what the Habs did against the Bruins this year and they added to the domination with a 4-1 win in Game 1 of this series.

The Bruins were able to hang with Montreal for about two periods, but the relentless physical play and constant rolling of lines finally caught up to the Bruins. The Canadiens controlled things for most of the game and outshot Boston 32-18.

The truth is that the Habs just have too much depth for the Bruins. It's inspiring to see Boston center Marc Savard return so soon from a broken back, but the Bruins will need more than that to steal one from Montreal.

          Pick: Montreal -1 1/2 (+135)

          Dallas vs. Anaheim (-170, 4 1/2)

In Thursday's Ice Picks, we discussed the importance of the power play in this season series. The team that scored more power play goals has won every game this series and in the two games where they scored the same number of PP goals, Dallas won both times.

Unfortunately, we made the mistake of underestimating the Stars' power play in the playoffs due to the absence of Sergei Zubov. Anaheim must have underestimated it too because the Ducks committed seven penalties and the Stars buried four power play goals in a 4-0 win.

If you think the win was an anomaly against these veteran Stanley Cup champs, you might want to reconsider. Dallas looked like a confident squad Thursday night and upsets have been known to happen to Cup defenders.

In fact, the last time a defending Stanley Cup champion won a playoff series was when the Avalanche did it in 2002.

          Pick: Dallas +160

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
            Tips and Trends
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Philadelphia 76ers at Washington Wizards [7 PM ET]

76ers: The 76ers have already clinched a spot in the playoffs and are now trying to win as many games as possible to get the best seed they can. They're aware that finishing fifth or sixth would allow them to face the Cavaliers or Magic and avoid the Pistons or Celtics. Philadelphia is 10-2 ATS in its last 12 road games overall and put up 109 points in their recent road contest in Atlanta. The Sixers have defeated Washington in back-to-back meetings but only by a combined 6 points.

76ers are 24-9-1 ATS in their last 34 games overall.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: 100

Wizards (-4, O/U 197): The Wizards are just beginning to make their presence felt in the East, with Caron Butler, Antawn Jamison and Gilbert Arenas all finally playing together. Washington showcased what it is made of on Wednesday night against the Celtics and has covered the point spread in 4 out of the last 6 meetings with Philly.

The OVER is 9-1 in Washington's last 10 home games.

            Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 104 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

Denver Nuggets at Utah Jazz [9 PM ET]

Nuggets: The Nuggets will try to strengthen their hold on a playoff berth as they play their final road game of the season. Denver got 33 points from Allen Iverson and 25 from Carmelo Anthony in defeating Golden State on Thursday 114-105 to move a game ahead of the Warriors for eighth place in the West. Nuggets head coach George Karl said: "We get to enjoy this victory for a day." Karl is well aware that his team has lost 20 of 23 at Utah since 1996.

Nuggets are 2-8 ATS in the last 10 meetings.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: 110

Jazz (-6.5, O/U 226.5): The Jazz are looking to bounce back after a 97-94 loss to Dallas on Thursday as they return home to the EnergySolutions Arena, where they have lost just once in their last 26 contests. As a division winner, Utah can finish no worse than the No. 4 seed in the West and appears unlikely to move up, yet the starters have continued to log minutes. The Jazz defeated the Nuggets 132-105 in the lone meeting at Salt Lake this season.

Favorite is 10-4 ATS in the last 14 meetings.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: 116

New Orleans Hornets at Sacramento Kings [10 PM ET]

Hornets (-8, O/U 211): The Hornets are clinging to the No. 1 seed in the West and are not sneaking up on anyone anymore, but they are also in the middle of a very tough stretch to close out the season: Lakers last night, Kings tonight and Mavs Wednesday night. Chris Paul has been quoted as saying: "We are up to the challenge." They allowed this Sacramento team to drop 112 points on them last time at Arco Arena in a 9-point defeat.

Favorite is 7-2 ATS in the last 9 meetings.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: 110

Kings (NA): The Kings have quickly gone from spoilers to spoiled. After beating Houston and Denver this month to stymie the respective playoff positioning of those teams, the Kings fell to Golden State on Tuesday after losing to the Lakers on Sunday. Small forward Ron Artest is battling a sprained left thumb while center Brad Miller will not return due to a leg injury. Sacramento?s defense has simply been non-existent lately and allowed 140 points in its Tuesday loss at Golden State. The Kings have covered the point spread just 3 times over the last 2+ years in this matchup with New Orleans.

Home team is 13-3-1 ATS in the last 17 meetings.

Key Injuries - C Brad Miller (13 ppg; leg) is OUT.
F Ron Artest (21 ppg; thumb) is questionable

            PROJECTED SCORE: 102
