    Friday, April 11

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Baseball Today
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    SCOREBOARD
    Friday, April 11
San Diego at L.A. Dodgers (10:40 p.m.) The Padres send Jake Peavy (2-0, 0.56) to the mound against the Dodgers’ Brad Penny (1-1, 2.84 ERA) in a West Division showdown of two of baseball’s top pitchers.

    STARS
    Thursday

    — Edwin Jackson, Rays, gave up two hits over eight innings in a 7-0 rout of the Mariners. Jackson struck out six and walked four in winning his second game of the season.

    — Edwin Encarnacion, Reds, went 2-for-3 with a homer and a pair of RBIs in a 4-1 victory over the Brewers. Encarnacion also scored twice.

    — Angel Pagan, Mets, went 3-for-5 with a double and drove home Jose Reyes with the winning run in a 4-3, 12-inning victory over the Phillies.

    — Geovany Soto, Cubs, went 4-for-5 with a homer, two doubles and two RBIs in a 7-3 win over the Pirates. It was Soto’s second career four-hit game.

    — Mark Hendrickson, Marlins, pitched seven innings to match his longest outing since June 2006 in a 4-3 win over Washington. Hendrickson (2-1) gave up one run and three hits.

    — J.D. Drew, Red Sox, went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs to lead Boston to a 12-6 victory over the Tigers. Drew has a hit in all seven games in which he’s played this season.

    — Travis Buck, Athletics, doubled home two runs in the 12th inning as Oakland completed a three-game sweep of the Blue Jays. Buck went 3-for-6 with three RBIs, matching an Oakland record with three doubles.

    — Melky Cabrera, Yankees, homered and drove in a pair of runs in a 6-1 victory over the Royals that helped New York avoid a series sweep.

    — Kevin Correia, Giants, carried a shutout into the eighth inning of a 5-1 win over the Cardinals. He scattered five hits in 7 2-3 innings, striking out four and walking two.

    AILING

Mike Lowell was placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Red Sox because of a sprained left thumb. He was injured on the first at-bat of the game Wednesday night when he fielded Ivan Rodriguez’s grounder and threw him out. X-rays were negative. … Cubs right-hander Jason Marquis won’t make his scheduled start Friday against the Phillies because of the flu, so right-hander Carlos Zambrano is moving up a day to start in his place. Ted Lilly starts Saturday against the Phillies, with Marquis or Sean Marshall going Sunday.

    REHABBING

Giants shortstop Omar Vizquel could begin testing his surgically repaired left knee in minor league rehab games as soon as next week. The 11-time Gold Glove winner, on the 15-day DL after arthroscopic knee surgery on Feb. 27, did light baseball activity and manager Bruce Bochy expects him to go through extensive pregame work including batting practice Friday.

    SIGNED AND DELIVERED

Fausto Carmona, a surprising 19-game winner last season, agreed to a $15 million, four-year contract with the Indians, a deal that potentially can earn him $48 million. It’s the highest guarantee to a pre-arbitration eligible starter. … Claudio Vargas and the Mets agreed to a minor league contract, giving New York another option for its injury-riddled rotation.

    LINEUP SHUFFLE

Yankees manager Joe Girardi shook up his lineup before Thursday night’s game against the Royals, moving Alex Rodriguez to third and placing Jorge Posada in the cleanup spot. Rodriguez had hit cleanup in the first nine games, and in 156 of the 158 games he started last year.

    NOMO SITTIN’ AROUND

Hideo Nomo appeared in relief in the seventh inning for the Royals against the Yankees, his first appearance in the majors since July 15, 2005. Nomo gave up two runs—back-to-back homers by Alex Rodriguez and Jorge Posada—and four hits with two walks in three innings.

    WINNING DEBUT

The A’s Joey Devine worked two innings and picked up his first victory in a 3-2, 12-inning win over the Blue Jays. He pitched a few hours after being recalled from Triple-A Sacramento when Rich Harden landed on the 15-day disabled list. Devine almost missed the start of the game after his connecting flight to Toronto was delayed by a snowstorm in Denver. He finally arrived at Rogers Centre about 20 minutes before the first pitch.

    GROUNDED

A Vermont Air National Guard pilot who took part in a flyover of Fenway Park during opening day ceremonies was grounded for making an improper maneuver near the park. The F-16 pilot flew under and over the other three F-16s in the formation at about 1,200 feet over Boston on Tuesday afternoon because he was going too fast and was late joining the formation.

    SPEAKING

“I want to be the guy up in that situation. I just didn’t get it done.”— Nationals catcher Paul Lo Duca, who grounded into a game-ending double play with two on in a 4-3 loss to Florida.

“When you throw a game like that to snap a four-game losing streak, it does a lot for your own self confidence. I’m almost eager to see how he comes out on his next start.”—Rays manager Joe Maddon, after Edwin Jackson yielded two hits in eight innings in a 7-0 rout of Seattle.

Hot lines: Friday's best MLB bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yankees vs. Red Sox (-110, 10)

The Yankees started slowly in their season series with the Red Sox last year, but ended off finishing by winning eight of the last 10 meetings. They hope to carry that momentum into this year's series Friday when they send 2-0 pitcher Chien-Ming Wang to the hill.

Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell is one hitter Wang won?t have to worry about. Lowell is out with a sprained thumb. You'd think that would hurt the Sox on defense the most, but Kevin Youkilis played a great game at third Thursday night in a 12-6 win over Detroit.

The Yanks don't need a team that plays strong defense right now. New York is having trouble putting up runs consistently and all but one if its games have played under so far.

          Pick: under 10

          Cubs vs. Phillies (+100, 8 1/2)

Philadelphia finally gets to return home after seven straight games on the road. The trouble is, they are coming off a tough 12th-inning, 4-3, loss to the Mets last night after clawing back from a 3-0 deficit.

The other issue is the Cubbies are sizzling right now with five straight wins. They send ace Carlos Zambrano to the mound, who has given up just two runs in two starts so far.

          Pick: Cubs

Pick 'n' roll: Friday's best NBA bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            New Orleans vs. Lakers (-3 1/2, 212)

Amidst the intensity of the battle for the top spot in the Western Conference - or perhaps because of it - Chris Paul and Kobe Bryant have emerged as the two leading candidates to be named NBA MVP.Their final head-to-head meeting should go a long way toward deciding both.

Paul's New Orleans Hornets can put a stranglehold on the West's No. 1 seed on Friday when they visit Bryant's Los Angeles Lakers, who may be able to call themselves Pacific Division champions with a win.The Hornets (55-23) have a 1 1/2-game lead over the Lakers (54-25) for the top spot in the tightly packed West, and can guarantee themselves home-court advantage throughout the playoffs with a win on Friday.

The Lakers, meanwhile, can wrap up their first Pacific Division title since 2003-04 - when Shaquille O'Neal was their center - with a win and a Phoenix loss.

            Pick: Lakers

            Phoenix vs. Houston (+1, 204)

It appears McGrady will be available Friday as the Rockets try to avoid losing their season series with the Suns for what could be a pivotal tiebreaker in the playoff standings. McGrady sat out Houston's game against Seattle on Wednesday, but the Rockets still managed to cover for the fourth straight game with a win over Seattle.

While the Suns (53-26) are battling the Los Angeles Lakers for the Pacific Division lead, Houston (53-25) is a half-game ahead of Phoenix in the West with both teams still having a shot at the conference's No. 1 seed. It's very possible the tiebreaker between the teams could be the difference in that race, or even determine seeding if they meet in the first round. The Suns have won two of the first three meetings this season.

            Pick: Houston

Ice picks: Friday's best NHL bets
              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Ottawa vs. Pittsburgh (-230, 5)

One of the things we talked about in some of the late-season Ice Picks, is that the Pens had quietly become one of the best defensive teams in the league down the stretch.

Well, the secret is out. Oddsmakers have lowered tonight's total from 5 1/2 goals in Game 1 to five goals tonight and it's not hard to see why. The Pens have allowed more than two goals only once in their last 10 games and the under has paid out in seven of their last eight.

A flat Ottawa team didn't get much of a sniff in a 4-0 loss Wednesday night and Sens fans can't take much hope from that pitiful effort. Ottawa looked like a team that can't wait for the season to be over and if something doesn't change in a hurry, we might see a lot of Sens on Team Canada's roster at the World Championships in early May.

That is, if Team Canada wants them.

              Pick: Pittsburgh -1 1/2 (+120)

              Philadelphia vs. Washington (-145, 5 1/2)

These teams have waited the longest to kick off their series and finally Caps fans will face the Flyers tonight.

We feel this series is overpriced for two teams that finished just one win apart on the season and part of the reason for that inflation is the Capitals' recent winning streak. Washington has won 11 of its last 12 games, but you can't overlook that only two of those wins came against teams who made the playoffs (Boston and Calgary).

The other reason is the Alex Ovechkin media hype factor and, hey, it's just fun to bet on this guy because he's so exciting to watch. But don?t be fooled. This is going to be a nasty series and though the Flyers are saying they won't put a shadow on the Caps' sniper, don't be surprised if they do. Let's hope so for good ol' fashioned hockey's sake.

This should be a decent series and Washington hasn't made the playoffs since 2003, so expect a rowdy crowd at the Verizon Center.

              Pick: Philadelphia

New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox [7:05 PM ET]

Yankees: New York's Chien-Ming Wang has made his first 2 starts at home against inferior opponents and won't have that luxury this time around. Wang allowed 2 runs in a combined 13 innings against the Rays and Jay, walking 4 and striking out 8. He also didn't need much run support, as the Yanks scored just 5 runs total in the 2 games.

Yankees are 5-11 in their last 16 games as an underdog.
Yankees are 7-1 in Wang's last 8 Friday starts.
Yankees are 11-5 in the last 16 meetings at Boston.

Key Injuries - SS Derek Jeter (quadricep) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

Red Sox (-120, O/U 9.5): Boston's Clay Buchholz will make his second start of 2008 against the team's biggest rival after a sub-par debut. Buchholz gave up 3 earned runs in 5 innings of a 10-2 loss at Toronto last Saturday, walking 2 and striking out 7. He is holding on as the fifth starter right now and will need an impressive performance to keep Red Sox Nation from hoping for Bartolo Colon's return to the majors.

Red Sox are 19-7 in their last 26 games on grass.
The OVER is 21-5 in the last 26 meetings at Boston.

Key Injuries - 3B Mike Lowell (thumb) has been placed on the 15-day DL.
C Jason Varitek (Wakefield) is expected to return to the lineup

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 7

Detroit Tigers at Chicago White Sox [8:11 PM ET]

Tigers (NA): Detroit's Dontrelle Willis gets a rematch with the team he no-hit for nearly 5 innings last Saturday. Willis walked 7 White Sox batters in that game and allowed 1 hit before getting yanked for Zach Miner, who went on to take the loss. Chicago ended up scoring 4 runs in the sixth inning en route to a 5-3 victory.

Tigers are 1-7 in their last 8 games overall.
Tigers are 2-6 in their last 8 road games.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 6

White Sox: Chicago turns to Jose Contreras against the Tigers again after he got hammered by them yet still walked away with a decision last time out. Contreras surrendered 5 runs and 10 hits in 5 innings of an 8-5 win, walking 4 and striking out 2. The White Sox were able to rally for 3 runs in the top of the seventh inning to pull off the victory.

White Sox are 6-2 in Contreras' last 8 starts.
The UNDER is 15-5 in the last 20 meetings at Chicago.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

Colorado Rockies at Arizona Diamondbacks [9:40 PM ET]

Rockies: Jeff Francis gets the start here because Colorado's Thursday game with the Braves was postponed due to snow. Francis' only start of the season so far came against Arizona, where he took the loss after giving up 12 hits and 5 runs in 6 1/3 innings. Three of the Diamondback's 12 hits in that game were home runs. The last meeting aside, Francis has been successful in his career taking on Arizona, going 7-3 in 15 starts.

Rockies are 2-6 in their last 8 games as an underdog.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Diamondbacks (-155, O/U 7.5): Arizona ace Brandon Webb takes the mound with an impressive 2-0 record and 2.08 ERA on the young season. Webb has already faced the Rockies once this year, giving up just 5 hits and 1 run over 7 innings. In his career, Webb is 9-7 with a 3.77 ERA in 22 career starts against Colorado.

Diamondbacks are 14-4 in their last 18 home games.
The UNDER is 7-2 in Arizona's last 9 games as a favorite.
The UNDER is 6-2 in the last 8 meetings.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

San Diego Padres at Los Angeles Dodgers [10:15 PM ET]

Padres (-115, O/U 6.5): There's no doubt San Diego's Jake Peavy is a Dodger killer, and his 10-1 career mark vs. LA and 2.21 ERA definitely proves that. Peavy allowed just 2 hits and 1 run in throwing a complete game against the Dodgers last Saturday, walking 1 and striking out 8. In fact, that's the only run he has allowed in 16 innings of work this season en route to a 2-0 record.

Padres are 11-1 in Peavy's last 12 starts at LA.
The OVER is 21-7-1 in San Diego's last 29 road games.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Dodgers: LA's Brad Penny opposed Peavy last Saturday and continued his struggles against the Padres. Penny is just 3-7 lifetime vs. San Diego with a 5.63 ERA after surrendering 4 runs and 10 hits in 6 innings of the 4-1 loss last Saturday. The Padres are hitting .297 in his 15 starts against him.

Dodgers are 21-10 in their last 31 Friday games.
The UNDER is 9-3 in Penny's last 12 Friday starts.

Cleveland Cavaliers at Chicago Bulls [ESPN2 | 7 PM ET]

Cavs (-4.5, O/U 197): The Cavaliers are looking to move closer to clinching the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference after avoiding their third straight loss with a 104-83 win over the Nets on Wednesday. Star LeBron James said: "We need wins" as his team had lost 5 of 7 heading into that game. James is dealing with back spasms, and he is averaging 25 points per game over his last 3 compared to 30 points on the season. The Cavs dropped the most recent meeting between these 2 teams 101-98 after blowing a 17-point lead thanks in large part to James' back.

Cavs are 2-7 ATS in their last 9 Friday games.
Cavs are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games overall.
The OVER is 9-3-1 in Cleveland's last 13 road games.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 102 (Side Play of the Day)

Bulls: Chicago was eliminated from playoff contention Tuesday with a 95-88 loss Miami and followed that up with a 115-83 defeat to Orlando on Wednesday. "I feel like we're not really playing with a lot of pride," Bulls rookie Joakim Noah said. "It's just the togetherness of the team is bad." On the bright side. Chicago is averaging 104 points in the last 2 meetings with the Cavs' both wins.

Bulls are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 Friday games.
Home team is 12-5 ATS in the last 17 meetings.
The OVER is 10-2 in Chicago's last 12 Friday games.

Key Injuries - F Drew Gooden (14 ppg; abdominal) is questionable.

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 95

Washington Wizards at Detroit Pistons [8 PM ET]

Wizards: Washington can't afford to give anybody a break as the team attempts to catch fourth-place Cleveland to gain home-court advantage in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs. Gilbert Arenas, Antawn Jamison, and Caron Butler all played together for just the 10th time this season on Wednesday in a 109-95 win over the Celtics. Detroit and Washington have split 2 games this season.

Wizards are 12-4 ATS in their last 16 road games.
The OVER is 20-7 in Washington's last 27 games vs. Eastern Conference.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 92

Pistons (-5.5, O/U 188.5): After already locking up the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference, the Pistons will likely continue giving their reserves significant playing time. Tayshaun Prince, Antonio McDyess and Rasheed Wallace all played fewer than 30 minutes and scored in single digits in their most recent loss, while 6 reserves played at least 16 minutes. The Pistons are on cruise control right now with their eyes set on the playoffs despite dropping 2 straight somewhat meaningless games.

The UNDER is 8-2 in Detroit's last 10 games vs. Eastern Conference.
The UNDER is 6-2 in Detroit's last 8 games overall.

Key Injuries - G Richard Hamilton (18 ppg; hip) is questionable.

New Orleans Hornets at Los Angeles Lakers [10:30 PM ET]

Hornets: This game for the Hornets has nearly as much meaning as any single regular-season game can have, with the outcome worth a 2-game swing in the tight race for the top spot in the Western Conference. New Orleans has been rolling and enters this game 55-23 after a 122-90 victory at Minnesota on Wednesday. Two of those wins have come against this Lakers team, as the Hornets put up 118 and 108 points in those victories.

Hornets are 20-6 ATS in their last 26 games vs. Pacific Division.
The OVER is 8-2-1 in New Orleans' last 11 Friday games.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 104

Lakers (-3.5, O/U 212): LA would like nothing more than to avenge a 10-point loss in New Orleans in the previous meeting, which saw Paul Gasol go down with an ankle injury in the first quarter. Kobe Bryant had 36 points, but he walked dejectedly back to the locker room with 15 seconds left after fouling out. The Lakers haven't lost at the Staples Center since late March and will look to improve on their 110-point scoring average at home.

Lakers are 1-7-1 ATS in their last 9 games vs. Southwest Division.
The OVER is 19-7 in LA's last 26 Friday games.
