Pick 'n' roll: Thursday's best NBA bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Denver at Golden State (-5, 240)

The NBA playoffs don’t start for over a week – for most teams. Denver and Golden State, deadlocked for eighth place in the West, are playing postseason hoops already and tonight’s game should have Game 7 intensity.

The Nuggets own the tie-breaker between the two teams, but have a tougher schedule down the stretch, with games at Utah and at home against Houston and Memphis. The Warriors finish off at home to the Clippers, at Phoenix, and home to Seattle.

So it’s easily the biggest matchup of the regular season to date, just don’t expect the intensity of the game to be matched by both defenses.

"This game could very well be 160-150," Warriors forward Al Harrington said of the final score. "It's going to be whatever team decides to play defense who's going to win.”

Well Al, that might be pushing it. Three of the last four meetings between the two teams have played under the posted total. This is the kind of game that Allen Iverson takes over when he has to. We have a hunch this one will be tight down to the final buzzer.

            Pick: Nuggets

            Utah at Dallas (-4, 200)

With every passing game you can see Jason Kidd become more and more comfortable on the floor with the Mavs. He’s starting to mesh better with his new teammates and anticipate what’s happening on offense, especially after he had to do without Dirk Nowitzki for a while.

Now he’s more aggressive on the floor, looking for his own shot when matchups beg for that kind of attack. The Mavs have won and covered four of the last five after a terrible stretch when Kidd first arrived in Dallas. Things have changed in Big D.

            Pick: Mavericks

Ice picks: Thursday's best NHL bets
              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Nashville vs. Detroit (-200, 5)

Oddsmakers got this one right by making the total a low five goals and the reason is simple: Red Wings playoff hockey is defensive hockey.

While Detroit likes to wing it with a freewheeling, high-scoring style through the first half of the season, this veteran squad usually puts the clamps on come April. Seemingly in preparation, the Red Wings have held opponents to one goal or fewer in five of their last 10 games, which includes a 1-0 win over Nashville on March 30 in the most recent meeting.

Detroit defenseman Brad Stuart is back after missing some time with a broken finger, so that will also help solidify the Wings’ blueline. They’ll face a feisty Nashville squad that will come out hitting in attempt to fluster the Wings and throw off their sensational breakout game. The key for the Preds will be doing that while staying out of the penalty box because the No. 3 power play in the league will eat you up in a hurry.

It's tough to find value on this line with Detroit at home and the total just about dead on. With a closely contested game, the puckline might be the play here.

              Pick: Nashville +1 1/2 (-120)

              Dallas vs. Anaheim (-165, 5)

If the regular season series is any indicator, special teams will ultimately decide this series. The team that scored more power play goals won every game this series and in the two games where they scored the same number of PP goals, Dallas won both times.

Sounds simple enough. The trouble for Dallas is that four of their five wins over the Ducks came in the first five meetings this season. The Stars can expect Anaheim to be more disciplined now that the playoffs are here.

The other problem is that Sergei Zubov is out indefinitely with a badly broken foot. Zubov was the quarterback of the power play and often the guy who brought the puck up on the extra-man attack and while even strength.

Expect a physical, tight-checking series as the Ducks begin their quest to defend the Stanley Cup.

              Pick: Anaheim

                    Detroit at Boston (-145, 10)

The Tigers finally shrugged the elephant of their backs with a breakout 7-2 win at Fenway Park yesterday, snapping a dreadful 0-7 start.

Detroit was trying everything to snap the skid, from Jim Leyland tirades, to superstitious bat switching, to Kenny Rogers’ inspirational two-hour pregame run around the outside of the warning track at Fenway Park.

“The offense had just been struggling, very badly struggling, and probably a lot of pressing going on,” Brandon Inge told reporters. “And now to get this win, that's probably going to relieve a little tension from some guys."

Nate Robertson takes the hill for Detroit today while Tim Wakefield gets the chore of taming the revitalized Tigers.

                    Pick: Tigers

                    Florida at Washington (-125, 9 ½)

There was cautious optimism in Washington this year with the beautiful Nationals Park opening, but those optimists haven’t had much to cheer about since the Nats’ win on Opening Day. Washington managed to ride that wave to win its first two road games of the year, then lost six straight heading into today’s matchup with the Marlins.

Yesterday’s loss might have been the toughest to swallow after Jason Bergmann held the Fish scoreless through four innings before allowing seven runs on six hits in the fifth.

"This is a big locker room, but there's nowhere to hide," Bergman told reporters after the game. "I've got to be a man and man up to my mistakes tonight. I really let everyone down tonight. I'm just [ticked], and like I said, I have every right to be."

It’s not just Bergman who’s frustrated either.

"I know it's early, but we need to turn it around quick," catcher Paul Lo Duca said. "Because this is getting ridiculous."

Odalis Perez and his fat 6.00 ERA through two starts get the task of righting the ship for the Nats today against Florida lefty Mark Hendrickson.

                    Pick: Florida

Atlanta Braves at Colorado Rockies [3:05 PM ET]

Braves (-115, O/U 9): Atlanta's Tim Hudson has beaten the Rockies 3 times at home but has struggled mightily at Coors Field, going 0-2 with a 13.00 ERA. Hudson has allowed 13 runs and 19 hits in just 9 innings during his career at Coors. He has pitched well in his first 2 starts of this season though, giving up 5 runs in 13 innings and failing to walk a batter.

Braves are 2-8 in their last 10 games as a favorite.
Braves are 3-8 in their last 11 games overall.

                      Key Injuries - NONE

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Rockies: Colorado's Jeff Francis has been shelled in 2 appearance this season, although 1 of them was wiped away due to rain. Francis surrendered 5 runs and 12 hits in 6 1/3 innings of his only official start at home against Arizona last Saturday, resulting in a 7-2 loss. He is 3-2 with a 6.49 ERA in 5 career starts vs. Atlanta.

Rockies are 2-6 in their last 8 games as an underdog.
The OVER is 8-3 in the last 11 meetings.

Chicago Cubs at Pittsburgh Pirates [WGN | 7:05 PM ET]

Cubs (-135, O/U 9): Chicago's Rich Hill pitched well despite getting a no-decision in his first start of the season against Houston last Friday. Hill allowed just 2 runs and 4 hits in 6 innings with 3 walks and 4 strikeouts. He is 2-1 lifetime vs. Pittsburgh with a 3.62 ERA and has seen the Cubs win 8 of his last 11 starts overall.

Cubs are 8-3 in Hill's last 11 starts.
The UNDER is 10-1-1 in Hill's last 12 road starts.

                      Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 4 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

Pirates: Pittsburgh's Matt Morris dominated the Cubs when he was with the Cardinals - going 10-2 with a 3.18 ERA - but he has struggled against them since then. Morris has gone 2-6 with an 8.22 ERA vs. Chicago since then and will also try to build off a no-decision at Florida last Friday in which he gave up 3 earned runs in 5 innings of an eventual 5-4 loss.

Pirates are 7-19 in their last 26 games overall.

                      Key Injuries - NONE

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Philadelphia Phillies at New York Mets [7:10 PM ET]

Phillies: Adam Eaton pitched well in his season debut, giving up just 3 runs in 7.2 innings. However, the much-maligned Phillies bullpen couldn’t hold the lead. Eaton has owned the Mets over the years. In 7 career starts, Eaton is 5-0 with a 2.68 ERA and a WHIP of 1.10.

Phillies are 9-1 in the last 10 meetings.
Phillies are 7-3 in their last 10 games as an underdog.
The OVER is 7-1-2 in Eaton's last 10 road starts.

Key Injuries - SS Jimmy Rollins (ankle) is OUT.

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Mets (-160, O/U 9.5): Just like Eaton owns the Mets, John Maine is equally as dominant against the Phillies. Maine is 4-0 in his career versus Philadelphia with a minuscule ERA of 2.11. However, Maine was roughed up by the Braves in his first outing of the season, giving up 4 runs on 8 hits in just 4 innings.

Mets are 2-10 in their last 12 home games.
The OVER is 8-1 in New York's last 9 Thursday games.

St. Louis Cardinals at San Francisco Giants [10:15 PM ET]

Cardinals (-140, O/U 7.5): St. Louis pitcher Adam Wainright is a career .310 hitter and went 1-for-3 with an RBI in his first start of the season, a 5-4 win over Washington last Saturday. Wainright has hit 1 of his 2 career homers at San Francisco, and he is 1-0 lifetime against the Giants with a 4.91 ERA in 2 relief appearances.

Cardinals are 7-1 in their last 8 road games.
Cardinals are 12-2 in their last 14 games overall.

                      Key Injuries - NONE

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Giants: San Francisco's Kevin Correia will be looking to rebound from a loss at Milwaukee in which he gave up 4 runs and 6 hits in 6 innings of a 5-4 loss. Correia was battling a stomach virus that caused him to lose 12 pounds leading up that start, and he should be in much better shape this time around. “I thought he threw the ball really well, especially as sick as he was this week,” said Giants manager Bruce Bochy after that outing.

Giants are 2-10 in their last 12 games as an underdog.
Giants are 4-10 in their last 14 games overall.

                      Key Injuries - NONE

Denver Nuggets at Golden State Warriors [TNT | 8 PM ET]

Nuggets: Sole possession of eighth place in the West is on the line here. Golden State and Denver are 47-31 with 4 games remaining in the regular season, and both trail seventh-place Dallas by 2 games. Denver has won 4 of its last 6 on the road, and Carmelo Anthony is averaging 40 points per game in his last 3 games alone. Denver has won 9 of its last 12 against Golden State, although the Nuggets are allowing 107 ppg on the season.

Nuggets are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 Thursday games.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 117

Warriors (-4.5, O/U 238.5): Golden State posted its highest point total of the season in Tuesday's 140-132 win over Sacramento but yielded more than 130 points. "It's hard to be disappointed when you win and you score 140 points, but we're going to have to start guarding people a lot better than we did tonight," said Warriors head coach Don Nelson. Golden State's 26-12 home record is the worst among West playoff contenders, but the team has won 3 straight in Oakland. The Warriors are allowing a league-worst 108 points per game.

Warriors are 6-15 ATS in their last 21 home games.

Key Injuries - G Mickael Pietrus (7 ppg; groin) is probable.

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 122

Utah Jazz at Dallas Mavericks [8:30 PM ET]

Jazz: The Jazz already have the Northwest Division title locked up, but they still looking to move closer to securing home-court advantage in the first round of the postseason. Utah has won 4 in a row overall and has also won 4 of 6 against these Mavericks. However, the Jazz have dropped 8 of 9 in Dallas.

Jazz are 2-7 ATS in the last 9 meetings in Dallas.

Key Injuries - G Ronnie Brewer (12 ppg; groin) is probable.

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 95

Mavs (-4.5, O/U 199): The Mavericks have won 4 of 5 overall, including Tuesday's 99-83 victory over Seattle. Jason Terry scored 22 points and Josh Howard added 17 for Dallas. "This is not a bad time to be playing your best basketball with the playoffs right around the corner," said Mavs point guard Jason Kidd. The Kidd-less Mavs scored 125 points the last time at home against these Jazz.

Home team is 19-7-1 ATS in the last 27 meetings.

Key Injuries - F Jerry Stackhouse (11 ppg; groin) is doubtful.

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 103

Los Angeles Lakers at Los Angeles Clippers [10:30 PM ET]

Lakers (-15.5, O/U 209): The Lakers are in a tight race for home-court advantage in the Western Conference, and they are also looking to complete a series sweep of the Clippers. LA has defeated the Clippers by an average of 25 points per game on the season, even with Kobe Bryant averaging just 17 ppg in the last 2 contests against them. The Lakers are 27-11 SU at the Staples Center and haven’t lost in the building since the end of March.

Lakers are 6-2 ATS in the last 8 meetings.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 97

Clippers: The Clippers are mercifully set to play the last game of what has been a terrible season at Staples Center. The Clippers are 13-27 at Staples and have lost 3 straight and 11 of their last 13 at home. Even with Elton Brand back, injuries remain a hindrance: Chris Kaman (ankle) and Corey Maggette (hamstring). The Clips are averaging just 94 points per game on the season and posted just 82 in the last battle of LA.

Clippers are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 home games.

Key Injuries - G Corey Maggette (22 ppg; hamstring) is questionable.

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 112
