        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        Atlanta at Colorado (+100, 10 1/2)

Here's the good news about Chuck James, Atlanta's starting pitcher today at Coors Field: he says his shoulder feels good after a rotator cuff tear held him back last year.

The bad news? He's sick with a cold, there's a chance of snow in Colorado today, and he didn't pitch until mid-March while he rested the shoulder, finishing with only two innings pitched in Grapefruit League action. Plus, the lefty sucks in Colorado to begin with, coming into tonight's game with a career 8.71 ERA at Coors while allowing three dingers and 10 runs in just over 10 innings pitched.

About the only thing the Braves can take solace in is that Colorado's starter, Mark Redman, isn't exactly the pick of the litter either. Another lefthander, Redman had a 11.63 ERA in six appearances last season and wasn't anything special in his first start of this year, a 8-1 loss to Arizona.

So, we have cold weather in the thin air of Colorado and two starters surrounded by question marks. To state the obvious, there are probably a handful of matchups with a whole lot fewer intangibles on today's board, but they're definitely worth mentioning. Happy handicapping with this one.

        Pick: Colorado

        Cincinnati at Milwaukee (-160, 10)

The bats will be itchy at Miller Park today with David Bush and Josh Fogg on the hill after Johnny Cueto and Jeff Suppan both had quality starts in yesterday's 3-2 Milwaukee win.

The Brewers offense picked up for Eric Gagne in the 10th after Milwaukee's closer gave up a two-out, two-strike dinger to Corey Patterson in the ninth. We shouldn't have to wait that long for fireworks today.

Bush walked five and allowed six runs over 5 1/3 innings last week in a loss to the Cubs, while Fogg served up two jacks and six runs over four innings of work against Philadelphia in his season debut.

        Pick: over

Ice picks: Wednesday's best NHL bets
          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

          Colorado vs. Minnesota (-130, 5)

These two teams met in the final game of the season and it was a 4-3 shootout win for the Avs. Expect more games like that throughout this series.

Minnesota won the season series 5-3 this year but four of the games were decided by one goal and none of them were decided by more than two goals.

As I wrote in my Western Conference previews and picks, you should be able to bet the home team and the under throughout this series and come out OK. Both teams play in front of great crowds and nobody plays a better defensive system than the Wild.

          Pick: Minnesota

Calgary vs. San Jose (-200, 5)

There is always at least one upset in the first game of the first round that makes you wish you'd taken the underdog because the price was just way too juicy. I think this might be one of those cases this year.

Calgary went 3-1 against the Sharks this season, winning the three most recent meetings. Two of those came in San Jose, though it should be noted that was before the acquisition of Brian Campbell by the Sharks.

The Flames came out flat last season against the Red Wings in the first round of the postseason and ended up losing the first two games in Detroit. They never recovered and ending up losing the series despite evening things up when it went back to Calgary. I think they learned a lesson from that and will come out hitting hard to send a message to San Jose.

San Jose wins the series, but Calgary pulls off a surprising first-game upset in a game that might go to overtime.

          Pick: Calgary

Detroit Pistons at Philadelphia 76ers [7 PM ET]

Pistons: Detroit is coming off a disappointing home loss to the Knicks on Tuesday, trailing 57-34 at halftime despite honoring the franchise's best players of all-time. Motivation is definitely a key concern for betting the Pistons down the stretch though they made a nice comeback that fell just short against New York. “The group that went in there, they played their butts off in the fourth quarter, they gave us a chance,” Detroit head coach Flip Saunders said. “It’s easy when you’re down 25 or 27 to just roll it in. Those guys didn’t, they fought back.”

The UNDER is 8-1 in Detroit's last 9 games vs. Eastern Conference.

Key Injuries - G Richard Hamilton (17.7 ppg; hip) is questionable.

            PROJECTED SCORE: 92

76ers (Pick'em, O/U 185): Philly will try to avoid losing 3 in a row at home for the first time this season. The 76ers clinched a playoff berth last Friday at Atlanta but then turned around and lost to the Hawks at the Wachovia Center on Saturday. “The game was flat,” Philadelphia head coach Maurice Cheeks said. “We couldn’t get into the rhythm that we were in before. I think we expended a lot of energy (Friday), realizing where we were and where we were trying to get to.”

Favorite is 11-5-1 ATS in the last 17 meetings.
The UNDER is 10-4 in Philadelphia's last 14 home games.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: 93

Boston Celtics at Washington Wizards [ESPN | 7 PM ET]

Celtics (-2.5, O/U 192): Boston's "Big 3" of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen all returned to action on Tuesday in a 107-104 overtime win at Milwaukee after sitting out Saturday's win at Charlotte. However, none of them played past the third quarter even though the Celtics blew a 14-point lead and went to OT. Bettors can expect a similar scenario tonight. “I just don’t want our guys playing big minutes down the stretch,” Boston head coach Doc Rivers said.

Celtics are 15-4 ATS in their last 19 games overall.

The UNDER is 7-2 in Boston's last 9 games vs. Southeast Division.

Key Injuries - G Sam Cassell (5.3 ppg; back) is questionable.

            PROJECTED SCORE: 97

            Wizards:

Wizards are 11-4 ATS in their last 15 games vs. Atlantic Division.
Underdog is 10-3 ATS in the last 13 meetings.
The OVER is 8-1 in Washington's last 9 home games.
The OVER is 7-2 in the last 9 meetings at Washington.

Key Injuries - F Antawn Jamison (21.5 ppg; shoulder) is questionable.
G Gilbert Arenas (20.9 ppg; knee) is questionable.

            PROJECTED SCORE: 95

Phoenix Suns at San Antonio Spurs [9:30 PM ET]

Suns: Phoenix will likely get Shaquille O'Neal back for this game after he sat out Tuesday's 127-113 win at Memphis that clinched the team a playoff berth. “We are working against the conference standings right now,” Suns star Amare Stoudemire said. “We are still improving as a team, and this was a good game for us. It was also an important game.” The Suns have won 2 of 3 vs. San Antonio in this year's season series after losing 11 of 14 to the Spurs.

Suns are 5-16-3 ATS in their last 24 Wednesday games.
The OVER is 8-1 in Phoenix's last 9 Wednesday games.

Key Injuries - C Shaquille O'Neal (12.6 ppg; 10.6 rpg; hip) is questionable.

            PROJECTED SCORE: 95

Spurs (-6, O/U 197.5): San Antonio is still chasing the top seed in the Western Conference playoff race, and the defending NBA champs realize they will need to fight down to the last game this year in order to achieve that goal. “In past seasons with 5 games to go, you knew you could be first, second, third or even fourth, and that’s it - this year it could be seventh, so it puts pressure on everybody,” Spurs guard Manu Ginobili said. “We can’t slow down, we have to keep playing.”

Spurs are 9-1 SU in their last 10 games overall, going 7-3 ATS.
The OVER is 6-2 in San Antonio's last 8 home games.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: 102

Cleveland Indians at LA Angels [3:35 PM ET]

Indians: Cleveland's Paul Byrd will look to rebound from a rough outing in which he gave up 5 runs and 8 hits in 4 1/3 innings at Oakland. Byrd did not strike out a batter and walked 2, but he is 3-1 lifetime against the Angels with a 4.47 ERA.

The OVER is 8-2 in Westbrook's last 10 Tuesday starts.
The OVER is 6-2-1 in Cleveland's last 9 road games.

              Key Injuries - NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: 6

LA's Dustin Moseley will try to remain perfect against the Indians when he takes the mound for the second time this season. Moseley will be making his second home start after serving up 6 hits and 5 runs in 5 innings of an 11-6 loss to Texas last Friday. He is 2-0 lifetime vs. Cleveland with a 3.68 ERA.

Angels are 26-9 in Santana's last 35 home starts.
The OVER is 9-3-1 in Santana's 13 starts.

              Key Injuries - NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Detroit Tigers at Boston Red Sox [7:05 PM ET]

Tigers: Detroit's Jeremy Bonderman is 3-4 in nine career starts against the Red Sox, although his ERA is a respectable 4.58. Bonderman wasn't dominating in his first start of the season versus the Royals and even though he got the loss, Bonderman pitched well enough to keep the Tigers in the game, giving up four runs over 6.1 innings.

Tigers are 5-18 in the last 23 meetings at Boston.
The UNDER is 7-2-1 in the last 10 meetings.

              Key Injuries - NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Red Sox (-130, O/U 9.5): Boston's Jon Lester is 1-1 on the season but he's coming off a masterful performance against the A's, giving up three hits and no runs in 6.2 innings of work. This will be Lester's first ever start against Detroit but the young lefty should have success taking on a Tigers offense that has struggled mightily early in the year, scoring just 11 runs in its first five games.

Red Sox are 11-4 in their last 15 games overall.

              Key Injuries - NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Philadelphia Phillies at New York Mets [ESPN2]

Phillies: Philadelphia's Kyle Kendrick looks to build off a solid first start of the season, as he earned a win over the Reds last Friday. Kendrick won despite giving up 4 runs and 8 hits in 5 innings thanks to solid run support. The Phillies have averared 7.2 runs in his last 5 outings.

Phillies are 9-0 in the last 9 meetings.
Phillies are 7-2 in their last 9 games as an underdog.

              Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

Mets (-145, O/U 9.5): New York's Mike Pelfrey makes his first start of the season and hopes to bounce back from a forgetful 2007 campaign. Pelfrey was just 3-8 last season with a 5.57 ERA, as opponents hit .298 against him. He faced the Phillies once as a starter, giving up 3 runs and 4 hits in 5 innings with 3 walks and 3 strikeouts but took the loss.

Mets are 1-10 in their last 11 home games.
The UNDER is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings at New York.

              Key Injuries - NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: 7

San Diego Padres at San Francisco Giants [10:15 PM ET]

Padres (-125, O/U 8.5): San Diego's Justin Germano will look to continue his history of early-season success and earn his second win of the year. Germano started the 2007 season at 5-0 before going 1-7 in his next 11 outings. He pitched 6 scoreless innings last time out against the Dodgers on Friday, allowing only 3 hits with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts.

Padres are 16-5 in the last 21 meetings.
The OVER is 21-5-1 in San Diego's last 27 road games.

              Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (Side Play of the Day)

Giants: There was definitely more bad than good in Jonathan Sanchez's first start of the season, which resulted in a 13-4 loss at Milwaukee. The good news is that he struck out 8 batters in 4 innings before departing. The bad news is that he gave up 7 runs and 7 hits as well, and he now has just 1 win in the last 2 seasons combined.

Giants are 1-8 in their last 9 games as an underdog.

              Key Injuries - NONE

Missing Info From NBA Tips and Trends:

Wizards: Washington is hoping to have Antawn Jamison and Gilbert Arenas back for this game after both missed Saturday's win at Chicago to nurse injuries. The duo has played together in just 1 game all season, and that was a 110-109 home loss to Milwaukee a week ago. "We can really put our foot on the pedal in these last five games and do what we need to do to win all five games," Jamison said. "We want to be able to feel good about ourselves going down the stretch."
