Hot lines: Monday's best MLB bets
            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            Tampa Bay at N.Y. Yankees (-185, 10 1/2)

After some less-than-stellar performances from their starting rotation, the New York Yankees returned to a familiar script on Sunday - get a quality start and have their two dominant bullpen arms close out a win.

Whether they can make that a season-long trend remains to be seen.

The Yankees look to salvage a home split with the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday when they turn to Mike Mussina, who's dominated the Rays at Yankee Stadium in his career.

Mussina (0-1, 4.76 ERA) is 7-1 with a 1.96 ERA in a New York uniform against Tampa Bay in the Bronx. Lately, however, he and the rest of the starting rotation for the Yankees (3-3) have been anything but dominant.

New York's high-powered lineup, meanwhile, has yet to get going. After leading the major leagues with 968 runs last season - an average of nearly six per game - the Yankees have only scored 17 times in their first six games of 2008.

All three New York wins have come when it has scored three runs or fewer. The Yankees were 6-36 in those situations last year.

"You're going to have those weeks,'' manager Joe Girardi said. "We got enough today and that's what matters. This offense will break out.''

Derek Jeter is hitting .217 with one RBI, while leadoff man Johnny Damon is batting .136 with one run and no RBIs.

By contrast, the Rays' lineup had been outstanding before Sunday's shutout. Tampa Bay (3-2) scored 31 runs in its first four games.

Though left fielder Carl Crawford (.174) and first baseman Carlos Pena (.222) have yet to get going, the Rays are getting offense from some unexpected sources. Cliff Floyd is hitting .364 with two homers and five RBI, while Eric Hinske is batting .400.

Mussina has dominated some of the Rays' big bats in his career, however. Hinske, Floyd and Pena are hitting a combined .179 lifetime against the 39-year-old right-hander.

Tampa Bay will send out Jason Hammel (3-5, 6.14) on Monday for his first start of 2008. One of Hammel's three wins last season came at Yankee Stadium on Sept. 2, when he went five innings, gave up one earned run and struck out seven in the Rays' 8-2 victory.

            Pick: under

            Seattle at Baltimore (-115, 9 1/2)

Off to a fast start, the Baltimore Orioles might be sad to see the Seattle Mariners leave town.

Baltimore looks to complete a four-game sweep of the Mariners on Monday when the teams meet again at Camden Yards.

After opening the season with a 6-2 loss to Tampa Bay, the Orioles have won four straight, including a come-from-behind 3-2 win over the Mariners (2-4) on Sunday.

Seattle had a 2-0 lead in the ninth after an outstanding start by Felix Hernandez, who pitched eight innings, allowed five hits and struck out six. However, he did not come back out for the ninth after throwing 97 pitches.

"How happy was I? Extremely," said Aubrey Huff, who had an RBI during a three-run rally. "Once he came out, I knew we had a chance."

With Seattle All-Star closer J.J. Putz on the 15-day disabled list with a ribcage injury, Eric O'Flaherty came in looking the save, but he gave up a run and left a runner on first. Mark Lowe came on and gave up a single to Jay Payton, then threw a wild pitch to Ramon Hernandez, allowing Luke Scott to tie the game. Luis Hernandez drove in Payton with the winning run.

"It was a great game for our team," manager Dave Trembley said.

Baltimore, looking to sweep a four-game series with the Mariners for the first time since September 1999, is off to its best start since going 5-1 to begin the 2000 season.

To match that start Monday, however, the Orioles may need a better outing from Daniel Cabrera (0-0, 13.50 ERA), who seems to have picked up where he left off last season when he led the majors with 18 losses.

Cabrera, 9-18 with a career-high 5.55 ERA last year, struggled in his season debut Wednesday against Tampa Bay, allowing six runs and six hits in four innings. He also walked five and gave up two home runs, but escaped without a decision when Baltimore went on to win 9-6.

            Pick: Seattle
