    Six-pack for Monday

-- Red Sox have already played in three different countries so far this season. They open at home with Detroit Tuesday.

-- Detroit Tigers have sold 27,600 season tickets, a franchise record for them. An 0-6 start has people shaking their heads.

-- Since 1903, 81 teams started season 0-5; only two of those 81 wound up making the playoffs that season (1974 Pirates, and the 1995 Reds).

-- Tigers sold $600,000 worth of tickets the day after the big trade with Florida, where they acquired Willis and Cabrera.

-- Braves are 37-61 in one-run games the last 2+ seasons.

-- Masters is the only golf major that has never been won by an Australian.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.......

      13) Tremendous NBA game in Seattle Sunday night, with huge playoff implications out west; Denver blew 5-point lead late in overtime, and lost in double OT, 151-147- they're now tied for 8th in west with Warriors (46-31), two games behind Dallas.

      12) You look at Durant-Green as Seattle rookies, and you think about how sad it is that the NBA is allowing some creep from Oklahoma to move the Sonics out of Seattle after they've been highly supportive for over forty years. Life isn't always fair.

      11) Nuggets lost on consecutive nights to Kings/Sonics when they're battling to make playoffs-- inexcusable.

      10) Good for the 4-1 Orioles, who scored three runs in ninth to shock the Mariners 3-2. They're leading the AL East.

      9) Tigers, Rockies are stumbling badly. Detroit goes to Boston this week after an 0-6 homestand, while Rockies got swept at home by Arizona, and is 1-5. No way to start a long season.

      8) I'm partial to Dusty Baker, since he signed an autograph and talked to me for 10 minutes when he was playing and I was 14, but he is a very good manager. Good first week in Cincy-- 4-2.

      7) Barry Zito isn't same pitcher he was in Oakland, but it would be nice if Giants scored a run for him- they lost 5-0/7-0 in Zito's first two starts this week.

      6) Cardinals won five in row, Washington lost four in row after Redbirds swept Nationals this week in St Louis.

      5) Good first week for Toronto, going 4-2 vs Bronx/Boston.

      4) Maybe its the crummy weather in most of the east this week, but teams seem sluggish coming out of spring training.

      3) ESPN had interesting piece Sunday morning about how the athletic director at Oregon, while a successful businessman, is not a college graduate. He is a friend of Nike president Knight, and also helped finance the buyout of his predecessor, which seems like a huge conflict of interest, but thats life in college sports these days. Boosters more and more run the show.

      2) If Oklahoma deserves an NBA ream so much, let 'em wait for the Grizzlies' lease to run out-- doubt there would be a lot of clamor in Tennessee if the Grizzlies left town.

      1) Solid week ahead, with NHL playoffs starting, Masters, the first golf major, the rest of baseball's home openers, and maybe the NFL schedule getting released. And I need to do my taxes, just a little reminder to myself.

              NCAA Championship Game Preview

-- Kansas, Memphis, both won their last twelve games.

-- Memphis PG Rose was ill Sunday, supposedly because he had a few too many Gummy Bears (seriously); he skipped the media sessions, but it would be shocking if he didn't play.

-- Teams had four common opponents this year; Kansas split with Texas, winning by 10 (Memphis beat Longhorns by 18 in regional final)....... both teams beat USC by 4, although Tigers needed OT to beat the Trojans.........Kansas needed OT when they beat Arizona; Memphis beat Wildcats by 13, but Bayliss didn't play for Arizona that night.........Jayahwks beat Sooners by 30, while Memphis won its game vs Oklahoma by 10.

-- Game opened with Kansas favored by 1.5; as I type this, the line had swung to Memphis by 1.5 or 2 points.

-- Memphis is 151-214 (70.6%) from the foul line in postseason, even with the Mississippi State game, where they struggled to make a foul shot. Foul shooting shouldn't be an issue.

Think this will be very fast game. Kansas is more battle-tested, having played in Big 12, but Calipari is better coach- this just seems like Memphis' time. To me, when Kansas was up 40-12 on North Carolina, then saw the lead slip to four, that was red flag, but then again, they were up 40-12 on the Tar Heels.

I prefer the over in this game, but would lean to Memphis.

2008 NCAA Championship - Alamodome (San Antonio, TX)

#1 Kansas vs. #1 Memphis [CBS | 9:21 PM ET]

Kansas: The key to the Jayhawks winning their fifth NCAA title in college basketball will be whether or not they can continue to play defense at the same level they played against North Carolina. They held the Tar Heels to a season-low 35.8 percent shooting from the field and blitzed them with 2 incredible runs. “We will need to have our best defensive performance,” Kansas guard Russell Robinson said. Insiders also wonder if the Jayhawks will have enough energy after such an emotional victory. “(Saturday night) was hard, no doubt about that, but I’m not worried,” Kansas center Sasha Kaun said. “We are going to relax today to get ready for this. That is the nice thing about knowing it’s the last game. There is no excuse to hold anything back.”

Kansas is 8-4 ATS during its 12-game winning streak.
The UNDER is 5-0 in Kansas' last 5 games overall.

Key Injuries - Reserve G Rodrick Stewart (2.8 ppg; dislocated knee) is OUT.

                PROJECTED SCORE: 72

Memphis (-2, O/U 146.5): Despite ranking 239th out of 241 teams nationally in free-throw shooting during the regular season, the Tigers have been dynamite from the charity stripe in their last 3 games, hitting 81 percent (76-of-94). They are trying to become the first team since the 1990 UNLV Runnin' Rebels to win the national championship from a non-power conference. “Of all the teams in this tournament, this is huge for the city of Memphis,” Memphis head coach John Calipari said. “The city of Memphis is in the Bible belt, a Godly place, a charitable place. But we’ve got a lot of poverty. We’ve got a lot of things going on. This, in Memphis, will mean more.”

Memphis is 5-7 ATS during its 12-game winning streak.
Memphis is 1-7 ATS in its last 8 Monday games.
The OVER is 5-0 in Memphis' last 5 games overall.
The UNDER is 7-1 in Memphis' last 8 games vs. Big 12 (OVER happened in Elite 8 vs. Texas).

Key Injuries - Reserve G Andre Allen (4 ppg; suspension) is OUT.

                PROJECTED SCORE: 74

And then there were two.The season began with 325 Division 1 men’s basketball teams. Now, only two survive as Kansas and Memphis battle for supremacy Monday night. In what has been the strongest Final Four pairing in the history of the tourney it’s only fitting the two best teams will take the floor for the final dance.

Separating the two is like casting a vote between the final two contestants in a beauty pageant. They are both worthy of wearing the crown, even if they have a flaw or two. First off, let’s be certain of one indisputable fact – Memphis is that good. They are not just national championship game material good, they are most victories ever in a season good. No team at this level has ever won 38 games in a season. In fact, In 172 games with UCLA, only four teams had handled a Ben Howland-coached UCLA squad by a larger margin than did the Tigers last Saturday… and this is Howland’s best team ever.

That’s not to refute the job Kansas did in a most-convincing 84-66 win over North Carolina. It marked the worst defeat by a Tar Heel team in the Roy Williams era at UNC. And in case you forgot, Carolina was not only the top-ranked team in the land, they were also 22-0 SU and 14-7-1 ATS away from Chapel Hill this season. Putting the two teams on a scale, and according to our database, we find these interesting stats and facts to ponder.

                    Memphis wins because:

                    • favorites of 5 or less points in NCAA championship games are 10-0 SU and ATS in the last ten tries

                    • five returning starter teams are 3-1 SU and ATS in NCAA championship games this decade (see Florida last year)

                    • teams who covered the Final Four game by 14 or more points (Kansas) are 1-5 SU and ATS in title games

                    Kansas wins because:

                    • defense prevails in championship games and the Jayhawks have allowed more than 80 points in only two games this season

                    • Big 12 teams are 7-2 SU and ATS against Conference USA teams in NCAA tourney play, including 6-0 when playing off an ATS win

                    • head coach Bill Self is 16-6 SU and 16-4 ATS in his career in games off a SU underdog win, including 16-3 SU and 15-2 ATS as a favorite or dog of less than 6 points.

Like the teams themselves, some pretty impressive numbers to say the least. So who will carry away this year’s prized trophy? Check out my take and the deciding reason why, on my page. I think you’ll like what you read.

March Madness will finally come to a close on Monday night, as the Kansas Jayhawks battle the Memphis Tigers at the Alamodome in San Antonio in the championship game.

And both the Jayhawks and the Tigers are coming off impressive victories in the semi-final round on Saturday night. Kansas was an underdog against the North Carolina Tar Heels, but they got off to a great start and put away the tourney's overall top seed. Memphis turned some doubters around with a big second half in taking care of UCLA.

Brandon Rush led the way with 25 points for Kansas in their 84-66 win over the Tar Heels. The Jayhawks jumped out to a 44-27 halftime lead in that contest, and played the opposition about even in the second half to secure the win. Darnell Jackson picked up 12 points for Kansas, while Mario Chalmers and Sherron Collins each had 11 points.

Memphis was up by just three points on the Bruins at the half on Saturday, but they outscored UCLA 40-28 after the break to come out with a 78-63 win. Chris Douglas-Roberts poured in a game-high 28 points for the Tigers on Saturday night, while Derrick Rose picked up 25 points and nine boards. Joey Dorsey chipped in with 15 rebounds.

The Tigers had been favored by 2 points against UCLA, and they had no trouble covering that spread. That marked the third straight cover for Memphis; they beat Texas 85-67 as 3.5-point favorites in the previous round, and Michigan State 92-74 as 5.5-point favorites in the game before that one. Memphis suffered ATS losses in their first two tournament games - they opened with an 87-63 win over Texas-Arlington as huge 26.5-point favorites, and they then just edged Mississippi State 77-74 as 9-point faves.

The Jayhawks were 3-point underdogs against North Carolina as they picked up their fourth ATS victory of the tournament. Kansas only failed to cover the spread in their 59-57 close call versus Davidson, in which they were listed as 10-point favorites. The Jayhawks managed to cover double-digit spreads in their first three games, beating Portland State 85-61 (-21), then UNLV 75-56 (-13.5), and then Villanova 72-57 (-12.5).

Totals bettors are going to see a trend come to an end for one team or the other on Monday night. The Jayhawks have turned in five UNDER results so far during the tournament, while the Tigers have played in five OVER games. The totals for Kansas' matchups have ranged from 136.5 to 158, and the Jayhawks haven't allowed any team to score more than 66 points on them in the tourney. Memphis' posted totals have been lower (ranging from 134 to 144.5), and they've scored at least 77 points each contest.

Vegas oddsmakers opened the total for the Kansas/Memphis matchup at 145.5 points, while the Tigers have started out as a 1.5-point favorite. The tipoff is set for 9:21pm ET.
