    Six-pack for Sunday

-- LSU hired Duke's athletic director; his first big job is going to be hiring a new basketball coach. Interesting to see what direction he'll go in for that individual.

-- 2007 Mets were first team in 11 years to steal 200+ bases.

-- There is a going to be a lime flavored Bud Light? Who in the name of Billy Carter thought this was a good idea?

-- Tampa Rays' pitcher Dan Wheeler is married to daughter of Rays' TV announcer Dewayne Staats.

-- Did you see NASCAR rookie Michael McDowell after he wrecked his car during practice this week? The guy walked away from a car that smashed into a wall, then flipped eight freakin' times. The safety features they have are tremendous.

-- I wouldn't want to be first team North Carolina plays when next season starts; Saturday's debacle will stick with them.

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday........

      13) Kansas 40, North Carolina 12; that was the score during the semis Saturday night, as ratings-starved CBS execs looked for piano wire to hang themselves with. All of a sudden, Carolina cut lead to 17 at half, then as low as four on second half, but in end, Jayhawks had a shockingly easily semi-final win.

      12) Memphis had tremendous energy in their wire-wire win vs UCLA, which seemed step slow at every key part of the game. Kansas-Memphis figures to be fast-paced, exciting final, in a tournament that has been devoid of much drama.

      11) Tigers scored 11 points in 1:51 span to take 17-12 lead and they never relinquished control of the game. Interesting to see if Kevin Love goes pro-- if he stays, UCLA will be a favorite to get to a fourth straight Final Four.

      10) How about Joey Dorsey? The kid had no points, but was a key contriutor, grabbing 15 rebounds. Great lesson for a young player, that you can play 27 minutes, take three shots and still be one of the most valuable guys in the game.

      9) Larry Brown, one of our least favorite people, was at Final Four, and he should have been; he coached UCLA, Kansas-- he played at North Carolina, and John Calipari was one of his assistants in the NBA. He also coached in San Antonio for the Spurs. Buyer beware to next AD that hires him; one-year deals are the right way to go with him.

      8) Tigers fell to 0-5, even though Dontrelle Willis didn't allow a hit in first five innings Saturday- he walked seven, the pen lost another lead, and Jim Leyland smoked a few more cigarettes.

      7) Tim McCarver doesn't think Mets or Bronx will get into the playoffs; neither does the guy who was dugout reporter for FOX at Mets-Braves Saturday. Surprising to hear that public opinion is so down on both NYC teams, big money teams.

      6) Tampa's Edwin Jackson only pitched 26 innings in his high school career; he was drafted as an outfielder by the Dodgers.

      5) Weird second inning for Rays' Jonny Gomes Saturday; he hit ball off top of rightfield wall, but thought it went over the fence, so he went into home run trot and was tagged out; then, in bottom half of inning, he whiffed on a flyball in rightfield. he atoned by hitting a three-run homer later on for the Rays, who are tied for first place in AL East (magic # over Bronx, 157). .

      4) Very weird play in Met-Brave game; Jose Reyes is up with Mets down 4-1; bases loaded, one out. Reyes smacks liner to left-center, where Kotsay clearly traps ball. Problem is, the ump says he caught the ball, and chaos ensues on bases. Randolph comes out and howls, the umps huddle and decide that Kotsay did trap the ball, so each runner moves up one base, so Reyes got one, not two RBI, but at least inning stayed alive.

      3) A total of 503,129 fans bought tickets to major leagues tilts on Saturday, an average of 33,542 per game. Florida, Oakland had only crowds of less than 21,262.

      2) Weather changed suddenly at Houston Open golf tourney Friday; Adam Scott got caught on course with no warmer gear so he played in shirtsleeves, then got sick and had to withdraw from the tournament Saturday morning.

      1) If I'm running the St John's athletic department, I'm doing all I can to make John Calipari our new basketball coach. He'd be huge hit in the Big Apple. Not sure who else can fix that mess.

                            Chicago vs. Detroit (-150, 5 1/2)

The Blackhawks are 5-2 against the President's Trophy winning Red Wings this season, which accounts for nearly 25 percent of Detroit's losses.

It might look as though another defeat is on the way with the Wings left with nothing to play for in their season finale. The Hawks are also on a four-game losing streak and Detroit is dealing with more injuries than just about any team in the league.

But all the injuries mean there will be a pile of call-ups looking to make a name for themselves and Detroit?s energy level should be high. Let's hope that oddsmakers overlook that factor and keep the line reasonable for this game so we can pounce on Detroit.

                            Pick: Detroit

NY Rangers vs. New Jersey (-115, 4 1/2)

Sometimes there's nothing to get a team going like ripping a good strip off it. That's what Devils coach Brent Sutter did Friday night after Jersey's ugly 3-0 loss to Philadelphia.

The Devils were uncharacteristically irresponsible defensively and were outshot 37-22 in a game they needed to ensure home ice in the first round of the playoffs.

Now the Rangers have a chance to nab that home ice advantage if they can win Sunday's matchup. The Blueshirts sit just one point behind the Devs. The Rangers have to like their chances if they meet the Devils in the first round. They're 7-0 against Jersey this season heading into Sunday's game.

                            Pick: New Jersey

                              Tampa Bay at N.Y. Yankees (-180, 9 1/2)

The New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays are expecting big things from Chien-Ming Wang and James Shields this season. After watching each pitcher shine on opening day, the clubs are feeling pretty good about their No. 1 starters.

Wang and Shields both look for another strong performance on the mound when New York and Tampa Bay continue their four-game series at Yankee Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Wang won 19 games in each of the past two seasons, but went 0-2 with a 19.06 ERA against Cleveland in last year's AL divisional series as the Yankees were ousted in four games.

He started this season off on a better note Tuesday when he outdueled Toronto's Roy Halladay in a 3-2 win, allowing two runs and six hits over seven innings in the final opener at Yankee Stadium.

"The two losses (to Cleveland) make me want to do even better this year," Wang said. "I want to make the coaches trust me even more in the future."

The Rays are hoping Shields continues to improve after he went 12-8 with a 3.85 ERA in 2007, his first full season in the majors. Tampa Bay locked him up with an $11.25 million, four-year contract over the winter.

"The sky's the limit for this fellow. We've just got to keep him healthy," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "If he's healthy, he's going to be a very, very successful major league pitcher for many years."

Shields was successful in his first start of this season, giving up two runs and five hits in seven innings of a 6-2 win at Baltimore on Monday.

Shields, though, lost both of his starts against the Yankees last season, getting tagged for 19 hits and 16 runs in 9 1-3 innings for a 14.46 ERA. He is 0-4 with an 8.58 ERA in five career starts versus New York.

Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui are both 4-for-7 with two home runs against Shields (1-0, 2.57 ERA), but the right-hander has held Alex Rodriguez to just two hits - one homer - in 11 at-bats.

Wang (1-0, 2.57 ERA), meanwhile, went 2-1 with a 4.42 ERA in three starts against Tampa Bay last season - all on the road. He is 6-4 with a 3.82 ERA in 11 career outings versus the Rays, including a 1-2 mark and a 3.33 ERA in four starts at Yankee Stadium.

                              Cleveland at Oakland (-130, 8 1/2)

The Oakland Athletics haven't swept a series from the Cleveland Indians in nearly five years.

Joe Blanton will try to help the Athletics end that drought Sunday in his third attempt at his first victory of 2008 when the teams conclude their three-game set.

The A's (3-3) opened their series against the Indians (2-3) with a 6-3 victory Friday. They followed that Saturday by scoring three times in the first inning and collecting a season-high 12 hits in a 6-1 win, their seventh in eight home games against Cleveland.

Oakland last swept the Indians in a three-game series from April 25-27, 2003, at home.

Blanton (0-1, 3.86 ERA) hopes to benefit from the A's sudden offensive outburst after getting only three runs of support in his last two starts.

The right-hander allowed three runs and seven hits over 5 2-3 innings in Oakland's season opener in Japan on March 25, but received only two runs of support in a 6-5, 10-inning loss to Boston. He followed that up with a stronger outing on Tuesday, holding the Red Sox to two runs and seven hits in a 2-1 defeat.

"He pitched like a true No. 1 guy," A's manager Bob Geren said.

Blanton, though, hasn't fared well against Cleveland, going 1-3 with a 4.65 ERA while serving up five homers in five starts. However, his lone victory in that span came at McAfee Coliseum on May 11, when he limited the Indians to two runs and five hits in seven innings of an 8-2 win.

The Indians hope Cliff Lee (5-9, 6.29 last season) can begin 2008 on a positive note after enduring his worst season in the majors.

The left-hander suffered a strained abdominal muscle last April and worked his way back the next month, but struggled with a 5-8 record and 6.38 ERA as opponents hit 16 homers off him in 16 starts. He dropped his last four starts in July with an 11.70 ERA and was demoted to Triple-A Buffalo before Cleveland recalled him to add depth to the bullpen in September.

Lee, though, is now healthy and looking to build on a strong spring training, which helped him regain a spit in the rotation.

"I felt I threw my offspeed stuff more," Lee told the team's official Web site. "I was pretty happy with throwing curveballs and changeups for strikes. I used my offspeed (pitches) more than I normally have, and I think that will help me.

"I don't want to give a scouting report on how I'm pitching, but I need to mix my pitches better, pretty much, and be a little more crisp with my locations. (Not doing that) is what got me in trouble last year."

                              Pick: over
