    Six-pack for Saturday

-- Bad week for Stanford hoops; Lopez twins both declare for the NBA, and Mike Montgomery takes over at Cal. Already a huge rivalry, Cal-Stanford just got a little more intense.

-- Impressive Dodger debut for Japanese import Kuroda, as Dodgers beat Padres 7-1 at Petco.

-- Blue Jays are going all out to make playoffs now- they've signed Rios, Hill to pretty big contracts, putting payroll way over $100M a year. Toronto has had toughest schedule in first week of any team, playing Bronx/Boston all week (2-2).

-- 76ers clinched playoff spot Friday night; tremendous job by Maurice Cheeks reviving this proud franchise, and good job by Billy King (since fired) pulling trigger on dealing the fan favorite Allen Iverson. They're more well-rounded now.

-- Arkansas dropped a 2009 football game at Texas so they can begin a series with Texas A&M; Bobby Petrino may be a gypsy, but hes no fool. I just hope Petrino is still with the Razorbacks when 2009 gets here. He changes jobs a lot.

-- So the Clintons made $109M since 2000; thats $53M less than Alex Rodriguez made during the same period, and thats only counting his baseball salary.

Saturday's List of 13: Random thoughts on Final 4 Saturday

      13) Hard to imagine that Memphis suspending backup point guard Allen isn’t a negative; he would probably be the guy who simulated Darren Collison in Memphis’ preparation for UCLA. Wonder what Allen did to get in so much trouble........

      12) You suspend a senior before you go to the Final Four, he did something bad. Memphis has enough depth to overcome from a talent standpoint, but from a chemistry standpoint, it has to hurt. How are they favored over UCLA?

      11) Former UNLV coach Bill Bayno is new coach at LMU, after Rodney Tention resigned/got fired. Bayno had been exiled to the NBA as an assistant (Portland) the last few years.

      10) WCC coaches Bennett (St Mary’s), Grier (San Diego) both turned Oregon State down, very bad news for Beavers. Have no idea where OSU turns next, but they could do worse than to hire Ben Braun, the guy Cal just fired.

      9) Little weird that Oregon State won last two national titles in baseball, while rival Oregon didn’t even field team; now Ducks have former Fullerton State coach George Horton starting their program from scratch.

      8) Any college hoop player who leaves school early, but isn’t a top 10 pick in NBA Draft should keep his options open by not hiring an agent, so if his workouts don’t go well, he can still go back to college and play next season.

      7) Jonas Kazlauskus is coach of Chinese national basketball team (funny, Kazlauskus doesn’t sound Chinese, we’ll call him the Chinese Coach K); the status of Yao Ming’s injured foot has to have both Coach K and the Rockets nervous about the Beijing Olympics, but for opposite reasons.

      6) Tim Horton’s Canadian donut chain, is owned by Wendy’s, briefly bringing a ray of hope of there being a Tim Horton’s in my neighborhood soon, but Dunkin’ Donuts has a monopoly in Albany area. Krispy Kreme tried entered this area a few years ago, but left quickly. Lot of money in coffee, something I’ve never had once in my life. I’ve had a few donuts, though.

      5) Larry Brown is bored and wants to coach again. Good lord. Who would hire the man with the shortest attention span in American sports? He can coach alright, but then he’ll start looking elsewhere before his second season is over. There’s a reason Peter Vecsey calls him Next Town Brown.

      4) If Congress insists on dabbling in sports, they should solve the NFL Network/Cable standoff, instead of digging into the steroids issue. Its pretty bad when I’m willing to pay extra for something and still can’t get it. I’d prefer watching the NFL Draft without Chris Berman’s babbling, but can’t this year.

      3) Golden State Warriors could win 50 games and miss out on the NBA playoffs. That doesn’t seem right.

      2) Long time ago, guy I worked for told me story about Gary Walters, a friend of his who went on to coach at Providence and be AD at Princeton. Walters was briefly the head coach at Davidson, maybe a couple of days. During that time, so many people came into his office, handing him envelopes of money to use however he saw fit, n he got unnerved about boosters’ influence in the program and quickly resigned. This is over 20 years ago. Wonder if those boosters are still around.

      1) UCLA doesn’t win the title this weekend, and Ben Howland becomes the Marv Levy of college basketball; that’s not a bad thing, just not the best possible thing.

2008 NCAA Final Four - Alamodome (San Antonio, TX)

#1 UCLA vs. #1 Memphis [CBS | 6:07 PM ET]

UCLA: The Bruins are back in the Final Four for the third year in a row, and head coach Ben Howland believes this appearance will finally yield something that was missing in the previous 2 trips - a national title. “I think this is, by far, the best team in the last three years,” Howland said. UCLA lacked a big-time post player the last 2 years and has added the missing link in freshman phenom Kevin Love, who is looking to follow in the footsteps of Louisville's Pervis Ellison and Syracuse's Carmelo Anthony as notable first-year players who led their teams to a national championship on their virgin Final Four run.

UCLA is 7-7 ATS during its 14-game winning streak.
UCLA is 2-4 ATS in its last 6 games overall.
The OVER is 7-2 in UCLA's last 9 Saturday games.

                    Key Injuries- NONE

                    PROJECTED SCORE: 66

Memphis (-2, O/U 134.5): The Tigers are 1 win away from setting the NCAA record for most wins in a season despite ranking as one of the worst free-throw shooting teams. They hey have shot very well from the charity stripe in the last 2 games combined (56-of-71 for 79 percent), but they will need to do so again against a UCLA team that applies outstanding pressure defense. In fact, Xavier head coach Sean Miller came away very impressed after losing to the Bruins last Saturday. "They have sometimes four players on the court who are 6-7 or taller and they don’t foul," Miller said. "I’m telling you, if you play as hard as they do and have the size that they do and the strategy and that offensive team can’t put fouls on them, it is really, really hard to score."

Memphis is 4-7 ATS during its 11-game winning streak.
The OVER is 4-0 in Memphis' last 4 games overall.

                    Key Injuries- NONE

                    PROJECTED SCORE: 68

#1 Kansas vs. #1 North Carolina [CBS | 8:47 PM ET]

Kansas: The Jayhawks are in the Final Four for the first since 2003 when they lost to Syracuse in the national championship game. They will be looking to capture their first NCAA title in 20 years, which is ironically also when they won the Midwest Regional crown in Detroit. The key will be how Kansas handles North Carolina All-American center Tyler HanXXXough, who proved to be the difference against Louisville. The Jayhawks have slightly more depth inside and will be able to use up to 4 different players on HanXXXough in an effort to contain him.

Kansas is 7-4 ATS during its 11-game winning streak.
The UNDER is 4-0 in Kansas' last 4 games overall.

                    Key Injuries- NONE

                    PROJECTED SCORE: 78

North Carolina (-3, O/U 159.5): The Kansas questions can't help but be a distraction for Tar Heels head coach Roy Williams, who coached the opposition for 15 years before leaving for his alma mater. “If I was ever going to play Kansas again, this is the only way I would want it to happen,” Williams said. “In fact, I wish it would happen on Monday night (for the title) instead of Saturday.” Still, Williams is an emotional person, and sophomore Deon Thompson said his coach would "probably get irritated" during the week leading up to Saturday's game.

North Carolina is 8-7 ATS during its 15-game winning streak.
The OVER is 4-1 in North Carolina's last 5 games overall.
The OVER is 8-3 in North Carolina's last 11 non-conference games.

                    Key Injuries- NONE

                    PROJECTED SCORE: 81

                      Final Four Gameday

History will be made on Saturday when for the first time ever, the Top 4 seeds in the NCAA Tournament will all be playing in the Final Four. The Madness started with 64 teams just two weeks ago, but only UCLA, Memphis, Kansas and North Carolina are left standing. Only two teams will remain when the final horn sounds on Saturday night.

                      UCLA (1) vs. Memphis (1) - 6:07 pm EDT

The Bruins have made it to the Final Four for the third year in a row. Now Bruins' fans are hoping the third time really is the charm and UCLA can take home the national championship that has eluded them the last two years. The difference maker this time around may be freshman forward Kevin Love. Love has been a monster for the Bruins through the tournament so far, averaging 21.8 points and 11 rebounds per game. In UCLA’s Elite 8 win over Xavier, Love scored 19 points and added 10 rebounds. It’s highly unlikely, but if the Final Four pressure does get to Love he’s got plenty of support from Darren Collison, Russell Westbrook and Josh Shipp, who have been here before.

                      The Bruins Tournament run:
                      (16) Mississippi Valley State 70-29 (-31.5)
                      (9) Texas A&M 51-49 (-9.5)
                      (12) Western Kentucky 88-78 (-13)
                      (3) Xavier 76-57 (-6)

The Tigers have their own freshman that has been burning up the court throughout the Tournament. Freshman guard Derrick Rose is averaging 20.5 points per game in the tourney, which included 21 points, six rebounds and nine assists in the Elite 8 versus Texas. Memphis will also rely heavily on leading scorer Chris Douglas-Roberts to keep pace with the Bruins, while Joey Dorsey will be key on the boards after grabbing 12 rebounds versus Texas.

                      The Tigers Tournament run:
                      (16) Texas Arlington 87-63 (-26.5)
                      (8) Mississippi State 77-74 (-9)
                      (5) Michigan State 92-74 (-5.5)
                      (2) Texas 85-67 (-3.5)

Kansas (1) vs. North Carolina (1) - 8:47 pm EDT

The Jayhawks may have the most balanced offensive attack out of all the teams in the Final Four. Four Kansas starters average double-digits points, and that doesn’t include big man Sasha Kaun who delivered 13 points on a perfect 6-of-6 shooting versus Davidson in the Elite 8. Even though the Jayhawks boast such a balanced offensive attack, Brandon Rush or Mario Chalmers can still break out for big points when needed to secure a victory.

                      The Jayhawks Tournament run
                      (16) Portland State 85-61 (-21)
                      (8) UNLV 75-56 (-13.5)
                      (12) Villanova 72-57 (-12.5)
                      (10) Davidson 59-57 (-10)

The Tar Heels put up a ton of points during their tournament run, which included topping the 100-point mark twice. Tyler HanXXXough has been huge for the Tar Heels, averaging 21 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. HanXXXough was especially strong versus Louisville in the Elite 8 when he had 28 points and 13 rebounds.

                      The Tar Heels Tournament run
                      (16) Mount St. Mary’s 113-74 (-25.5)
                      (9) Arkansas 108-77 (-10)
                      (4) Washington State 68-47 (-8)
                      (3) Louisville 83-73 (-6)
