              Hot Lines

              Friday, April 4

              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pick 'n' roll: Today’s NBA picks
              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Charlotte at Toronto (-10 ½, 204)

Toronto must be fired up going into this game. They desperately need a win to help them come out on top of a three-way tie for fifth spot in the East. The difference between fifth and seventh place would mean playing the Cleveland Cavaliers (42-34) rather than the Detroit Pistons (53-21) in the first round of the playoffs.

The other motivating factor for Toronto is that they are still one win away from clinching a playoff spot after an apparent win on Wednesday night in Atlanta was taken away by a time-keeping error. T.J. Ford’s last-second, game-winning basket didn’t count and the Raptors lost in overtime. Players, coaches and executives were all irate after that game, and you can expect that energy to carry over into tonight’s game at the Air Canada Centre where the Raptors have won and covered in four of the last five visits from the Bobcats.

              Pick: Raptors

Dallas at Los Angeles Lakers (-6, 207)

Here are two teams that just got their big men back from the infirmary and are coming off big wins as a result. L.A. took advantage of Pau Gasol’s return (and a Brandon Roy-less Portland Trailblazers) to take a 13-point victory. Gasol’s 32 minutes was more playing time than was expected from the 7-footer and he was able to contribute in all facets of the game with 10 points, six rebounds and seven assists.

For the Mavs, Dirk Nowitzki surprised everyone when he took the floor against Golden State Wednesday night after sitting out just four games with a high ankle sprain. Nowitzki helped Dallas take a 111-86 win as 5-point favorites, but unlike Gasol, Nowitzki didn’t look completely healthy. He said after the game, "I wasn't moving great out there. I was catching and shooting, or posting up and letting other guys do the work."

That kind of production probably won’t be enough against the Lakers tonight.

              Pick: Lakers

Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Boston at Toronto (-110, 9)

The Tokyo trip didn’t seem to affect the Red Sox much, judging by their two wins in Oakland to kick off the portion of their season to be played on North American soil. Now they leave the country again, but the trip to Canada will be much less taxing.

The Sox had a tough time with the Blue Jays last season and split the season series. However, Tim Wakefield had a winning record against the Jays in 2007, including a road win in April when the closed roof at the Rogers Centre allowed his knuckleball to gain a little extra movement. He allowed just four hits and one earned run in seven innings in that game.

As for the Jays, if their season-opening series at Yankee Stadium is any indication, their bats aren’t quite warmed up yet. They managed just nine runs in three games and new additions David Eckstein and Scott Rolen haven’t been a factor yet. Eckstein is hitting leadoff for the Jays but had just two hits in nine at-bats and Rolen is on the DL with a broken finger.

                    Pick: Red Sox

New York Mets at Atlanta (-132, 8 ½)

Fans will get a good pitching matchup in Atlanta today with the Mets’ John Maine facing the Braves' Tim Hudson, but they could be treated to a slugfest instead.

Both teams got their seasons started off to strong starts on the offensive side. The Mets took advantage of some soft Marlins pitching to knock in 24 runs in the series and the Braves produced just as much offense against much tougher pitching in Pittsburgh.

But the Mets look like they’re most likely to have success at the plate today.

Maine dominated the Braves in his last two starts against them, allowing just one earned run and three hits in both games. If last year is any indication, Maine won’t need any time to find his groove on the mound. In his five April starts in 2007, the Mets went 5-0 and allowed only an incredible six earned runs through that month.

Hudson didn’t do badly against the Mets last year, but at the end of the season when the Mets looked like they couldn’t beat anyone, they still got two wins against Hudson. And he won’t be able to depend on his bullpen to bail him out today; they already have two blown saves after three games.

                    Pick: Mets

Spurs: The defending NBA champions are winners of 8 straight and have a chance to clinch their 11th straight postseason berth here. San Antonio is coming off back-to-back blowout wins over playoff contenders already, beating Houston and Golden State this week by at least 21 points each. “Games mean a lot these days,” said Spurs star Tim Duncan. San Antonio is allowing just 87 ppg during the team's winning streak.

Spurs are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games overall.

Key Injuries- F Robert Horry (3 ppg; knee) is questionable.

Utah holds a 3 1/2-game lead atop the Northwest Division, but its final six games are against teams currently in playoff position in the West. “This is going to be tough,” Jazz center Mehmet Okur said. The home team has won the last 7 games in this series.

The home team is 11-1 ATS in the last 12 meetings.

Dallas Mavericks at Los Angeles Lakers [TNT | 10:30 PM ET]

Mavs: Buoyed by the stirring return of the NBA’s reigning MVP Dirk Nowitzki, the Mavericks gave their playoff hopes and psyche a considerable boost by blowing past Golden State on Wednesday night. Nowitzki said his knee is fine, but his ankle remains sore with sharp movements. Dallas has played Los Angeles tough this year, defeating the Lakers by 7 points at home and losing to the Lakers by just 6 points combined in losing the last 2 meetings.

The underdog is 9-3-1 ATS in the last 13 meetings.

Key Injuries- G Jerry Stackhouse (11 ppg; groin) is expected to miss.

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 101

Lakers (-5.5, O/U 207): The Lakers got 7 assists apiece from Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol - who was effective in his first game back from an ankle injury - to beat Portland on Wednesday night. Gasol had missed nearly 3 weeks with a sprained left ankle and said afterward it was still tender but felt better than expected. Nowitzki has lit up the Lakers defense for 26, 30, and 35 points already this season, but LA has won 2 straight against the Mavs.

Lakers are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games overall.

                        Key Injuries- NONE

The UNDER is 6-2 in the last 8 meetings at Colorado.

                          Key Injuries- NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Rockies (-125, O/U 10): Colorado's Mark Redman has been very limited over the last 2 seasons due to injuries and agreed to a 45-day clause with the team to prove his worth. That means Redman would receive a pro-rated portion of his contract if he is released within the first 45 days of the season. He was 2-0 in 3 starts with a 3.20 ERA for the Rockies down the stretch last season but failed to make the postseason roster.

Rockies are 40-16 in their last 56 home games.

                          Key Injuries- NONE

Boston Red Sox at Toronto Blue Jays [7:15 PM ET]

Red Sox (-105, O/U 9): Tim Wakefield showed signs of brilliance last year, but he also showed signs of not fooling anyone with his knuckleballs. Wakefield pitched a scoreless 22 innings straight in 3 straight outings at one point, but he finished the season 1-3 while allowing 17 runs during that stretch and did not pitch in the World Series. The right-hander is 15-10 against the Blue Jays during his career with a 3.86 ERA.

Red Sox are 20-7 in their last 27 games overall.

                          Key Injuries- NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Blue Jays: Shaun Marcum was red-hot last year in the months of July and August, going 8-3 during that 2-month span. Marcum only suffered 3 losses at home all season long and earned his spot in the rotation after allowing just 11 earned runs in 13 relief appearances to kick off the 2007 season. The right-hander surrendered just 7 earned runs in 15 innings pitched against Boston last season.

Blue Jays are 4-0 in the last 4 meetings.

Key Injuries- LF Matt Stairs (hip) is questionable.

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Los Angeles Dodgers at San Diego Padres [10:05 PM ET]

Dodgers: Hiroki Juroda is the wildcard in the Dodgers rotation. He’s a 33-year-old Japanese import and by all indications, he can be a better than average major league starter. He’s poised with a plethora of pitches and the ability to change speeds. Kuroda is a power pitcher with ground ball tendencies. However, he can also deal a slider, split, and cutter. The Dodgers inked him to a 3-year, $35 million deal so there will be expectations. A plus is having closer Takashi Saito on his team to help ease the load of his transition to the U.S.

Dodgers are 11-23 in the last 34 meetings.

                          Key Injuries- NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Padres (-107, O/U 8): Justin Germano started 5-0 last season, yielding just 11 runs in 43 innings pitched. However, the wheels fell off after that terrific start, as Germano earned just 2 wins the rest of the season and even ended the year in the bullpen. Germano delayed his return to San Diego this year, as he stayed in Arizona to work on his mechanics and pitched in a minor league game last week. Germano is 0-4 lifetime vs. LA with a 7.59 ERA.

Padres are 16-6 in their last 22 home games

                          Key Injuries- NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Ice picks: Friday's best NHL bets

                            Boston vs. Ottawa (-135, 5 1/2)

The Sens are 2-4 this season in their next game after playing the Leafs. Last night they beat them 8-2, but it was a costly victory because they lost captain Daniel Alfredsson and forward Mike Fisher.

Now they play a hungry Bruins team that’s hanging onto a playoff spot for dear life with 92 points, just one point ahead of ninth-place Philadelphia. All the pressure is really on Ottawa here. The Senators are trying to avoid the worst collapse in NHL history and their fans won’t except missing the playoffs.

                            Pick: Boston

                            Nashville vs. Chicago (-145, 5 1/2)

The Blackhawks have just been eliminated from the playoff race after Nashville beat St. Louis last night.

For most teams, this would be a huge letdown spot. But this is a young Blackhawks squad that should want to take out some frustration on the team that bumped them from the postseason. We can also hope the Preds did some celebrating after last night’s victory and might be playing with a little more caution in their final game of the season.

                            Pick: Chicago

                            Florida vs. Carolina (-265, 5 1/2)

The Canes got a break from NHL schedule makers by getting lame ducks Tampa Bay and Florida in their final two games of the season.

Last game Carolina beat up on the Lightning 6-2 and the Canes need the points again tonight to ensure a playoff spot. Florida hasn’t won in its last 15 trips to Raleigh.

                            Pick: Carolina -1 1/2 (-110)

                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
