    Six-pack for Tuesday

-- Success in NCAA tournament can be expensive, as they found out at Western Kentucky Monday, with Darrin Horn moving on to be the new hoop coach at South Carolina.........

-- .......and at Stanford too, where both Lopez twins declared for NBA Draft. Brook Lopez was a given to bolt, but Robin is more of a project, and needed another year in college.

-- TCU (Texas Christian) signed Jim Christian to be its hoop coach; for more info on the Horned Frogs, see Fact of Day in the box two boxes below this one......

-- Doug Collins turned down $5M a year to run Milwaukee Bucks; must be nice to be set for life financially........

-- Could someone explain to me how Indiana AD Greenspan still has a job? He signed Kelvin Sampson, knowing he was a rule-breaker, then it happened again. If Greenspan talked to Isiah Thomas about the IU job, he should be shown the door before he does any further damage to a proud program.

-- Week 1 NFL Primetime Games
Thursday, Sept 4-- Redskins at Giants
Sunday Sept 7-- Bears at Colts
Monday Sept 8-- Vikings at Packers; Broncos at Raiders

Tuesday's List of 13: Wrapping up Opening Day 2008

Nothing like twelve hours of baseball on an otherwise dismal Monday to close out March in style. The $160 for MLB Extra Innings baseball package might be the best money I spend all year, and baseball is my third-favorite sport. Anyway, here are some thoughts I compiled on Opening Day, 2008.

      13) Pirate manager John Russell will never forget his debut as Pittsburgh skipper; four hours, 28 minutes, 437 pitches, as his Pirates blew a 9-4 9th inning lead before surviving yet another Atlanta rally in 12th inning, winning 12-11. After that game, it has to get easier, right?

      12) In last ten Opening Days, Florida Marlins have used total of ten different starting right fielders. Nothing like stability.

      11) Reds honored the late Joe Nuxhall (former broadcaster and player for over sixty years) by wearing NUXHALL 41 on back of every jersey for Monday's game. Nice touch.

      10) Over 3.4 million fans saw spring training games this year.

      9) Albert Pujols had homer wiped out, Ankiel/Molina lost pair of RBI each, as Colorado-St Louis was washed out with Cards leading 5-1 in bottom of third inning. Horrible rule; everything that happens should count, and game should be resumed from point of interruption. Who would be against this?

      8) Jake Peavy knocked in first two runs of year for San Diego, getting one on each of his first two '08 at-bats. He also tossed seven shutout innings against the Astros. Impressive debut.

      7) Umpire Joe West looks like a miserable ol' cuss; he and Tom Glavine were trading dirty looks in second inning Monday, in the first game of the season. Life is too short to be miserable.

      6) Big debut at Wrigley for Kosuke Fukudome, who knocked in all three Cubs runs with a dramatic ninth inning homer after Milwaukee had taken 3-0 lead in top of ninth. Brewers won 4-3 in 10th inning on blustery day, but Fukudome made an impact.

      5) As happy as Brewers have to be to get off to 1-0 start, they have to be very worried about Eric Gagne, who looked awful in his stint Monday, blowing 3-0 lead in ninth.

      4) Nationals are 2-0 after pair of last-inning wins. Manny Acta should get at least one vote for Manager of Year, just off first two days of season. Nationals put Elijah Dukes on DL after he played two innings (hamstring); playing with Rocco Baldelli in Tampa last year apparently wore off on him.

      3) Former Cal Bear Xavier Nady is on pace to hit 324 home runs after hitting two taters, knocking in four runs, scoring four and getting four hits, including winning 3-run homer in 12th inning of what might wind up being wildest game played all season.

      2) Rough start to season for Braves, who lost on walkoff HR in Washington Sunday, then in 12th inning Monday.

      1) Opening Day is about optimism; Pirates, Nationals and Rays are all in first place. Its going to be 60 degrees here in Albany Tuesday. Spring is finally here. Baseball games are back, with no lawyers, no mention of off-field issues. Its about time.

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Blue Jays at New York Yankees [7:05 PM ET]

Blue Jays: The Blue Jays' mantra throughout spring training was to stay healthy, and they did so, until 3B Scott Rolen went down with a broken finger and SP Casey Janssen suffered a torn labrum. Ace Roy Halladay will take the mound, and he's enjoyed plenty of success against the Yankees. The right-hander is 7-1 with a 2.04 ERA in his last 12 starts against New York, and went 16-7 with a 3.71 ERA overall in 2007.

The OVER is 7-3 in Blue Jays last 10 overall.

Key Injuries- 3B Scott Rolen (finger) is OUT.

          PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Yankees (-170, O/U 9): For the first time in 13 years, the New York Yankees will not have Joe Torre in their dugout. Looking to bounce back from a rough end to his season is opening day starter Chien-Ming Wang, who went 19-7 with a 3.70 ERA in 2007. However, Wang struggled in the playoffs, going 0-2 with a 19.06 ERA against Cleveland and said it took a month just to get over his performances. The right-hander didn't beat the Blue Jays last season, going 0-2 with a 6.35 ERA in three starts, but was a solid 10-game winner at Yankees Stadium.

Yankees are 41-17 in their last 58 home games.

          Key Injuries- NONE

          PROJECTED SCORE: 5

New York Mets at Florida Marlins [7:10 PM ET]

Mets (-215, O/U 8.5): New York has won 11 of its last 12 games at Florida and hopes to build on a 10-hit performance in a 7-2 win on Monday. Pedro Martinez will take the hill for the Mets and look to follow a strong effort from Johan Santana. Martinez is 5-2 lifetime at Florida with a 1.89 ERA in 10 starts.

Mets are 11-1 in their last 12 games at Florida.
The OVER is 12-2-1 in New York's last 15 games overall.
The OVER is 8-2 in Martinez's last 10 road starts.

          Key Injuries- NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 8 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

Marlins: Rick VandenHurk will toe the rubber for Florida and try to beat the Mets for the first time. He was 0-1 in 2 starts against them as a rookie last season, striking out 12 batters in nine innings while allowing 4 home runs.

Marlins are 2-7 in VandenHurk's last 9 starts.
The OVER is 8-1-1 in the last 10 meetings.

          Key Injuries- NONE

          PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Boston Red Sox at Oakland Athletics [10:05 PM ET]

Red Sox (-130, O/U 8.5): Daisuke Matsuzaka will take the hill for the second time in a week for Boston after starting the season opener in Japan against the A's. Dice-K struggled a bit in his 5 innings, walking 5 batters and allowing 2 hits and 2 runs. The Red Sox went on to win the game 6-5 in 10 innings. “I’m glad that things ended well for the team, but, of course, I’m not happy with my own results,” Matsuzaka said. “But I hope I can take some of the things I learned and use them as a positive direction for my next start.”

Red Sox are 8-1 in their last 9 games overall.
Red Sox are 2-8 in the last 10 meetings at Oakland.

          Key Injuries- NONE

          PROJECTED SCORE: 5

A's: Joe Blanton started off well in Japan against the Red Sox, failing to allow a run through the first 5 innings. However, Blanton gave up 3 runs in the sixth inning and retired 2 batters before leaving the game. The A's rebounded to win Game 2, 5-1. “I thought we played two real good games over there against the defending champions,” Oakland manager Bob Geren said. “We had a chance to take both of those games, and now we have a chance to take two more. It feels like we’re starting over, but we’re just hoping to do what we’ve done since we started spring training, and that’s play good baseball.”

A's are 2-10 in their last 12 games on grass.
A's are 3-11 in their last 14 games overall.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Tuesday NBA Gameday

Kevin Garnett and the Boston Celtics hit the road to take on the Chicago Bulls on Tuesday night. Here's a look at that matchup and three others in your NBA Gameday:

New Orleans Hornets at Orlando Magic, 7:00pm ET

The Hornets are hanging tough in the West standings, and they'll continue their quest for first place in the conference when they play in Orlando on Tuesday. Chris Paul and company have won six of their past seven games (falling to Boston), and they're coming off a 118-111 win over Toronto on Sunday. Paul had 20 points and 16 assists that day.

The Magic have lost three of their past five contests, but with first place in their division and third place in the East basically locked up they don't have much to play for down the stretch. Orlando was last in action on Friday night, when they beat the Bucks 103-86. Dwight Howard picked up 25 points and 11 rebounds for the Magic in that victory.

Philadelphia 76ers at New Jersey Nets, 7:30pm ET

The Sixers could end up finishing as high as fourth or fifth in the Eastern Conference standings thanks to a hot month of March. Philadelphia just played division-rival New Jersey back on March 22, and they pulled off a 91-87 win in that contest. Andre Iguodala was good for 28 points on the night, while Andre Miller contributed 21 points.

The Nets are trying to chase down the Hawks for the eighth and final playoff berth in the East, but they've hurt their chances with four losses over their past six games. New Jersey was beaten 110-104 at home by the Suns in their last game on Saturday, with Vince Carter tossing in 32 points in the defeat. Richard Jefferson picked up 20 points.

Golden State Warriors at San Antonio Spurs, 8:30pm ET

The Warriors are fighting with the Nuggets for the final playoff berth in the Western Conference, and one of those teams could be on the sidelines when the postseason begins despite a strong record. Golden State will get a tough test Tuesday, when they take on San Antonio. However, the Warriors did get past the Spurs 130-121 in January.

San Antonio won their seventh game in a row on Sunday, as they topped the Rockets 109-88. That hot stretch has kept the Spurs up with the Hornets and the Rockets in the Southwest Division standings. Tony Parker and Michael Finley each scored 22 points in the Spurs' win over Houston on Sunday, while Tim Duncan tossed in 13 points that day.

Boston Celtics at Chicago Bulls, 8:30pm ET

The Celtics lost just three times in the month of March (to the Jazz, Hornets, and Sixers), and it doesn't look like the Pistons are going to be able to catch them for top spot in the Eastern Conference. Boston embarrassed the Heat 88-62 on Sunday, with Leon Powe scoring a team-high 17 points in that win. Garnett was good for 12 points.

The Bulls have lost four of their past six games as they sit with the rest of the dregs in the lower half of the East's standings. Chicago, however, did manage to pick up a 114-111 win over the Bucks on Saturday, with Joakim Noah scoring 18 points and grabbing 15 rebounds in that contest. Larry Hughes poured in a team-high 19 points on that day.
