He was a quality starter for a few teams before he had to have Tommy John surgery. The cubs took a flier on him cheap to have him in the bullpen a couple years back.Originally posted by Chado1

Correct me if I'm wrong Rook, but I think Lieber is kind of on standby as a spot starter. If Dempster has trouble he will be there to fill in as well as with injuries.Originally posted by Chado1Comment

Pinella has said numerous times that it's going to take more then 5 starting pitchers this year to win the division and be successful, so although it could be thought of a demotion for Leiber, he still can provide strong long innings if need be in the short term, and become that spot starter on some of those long couple weeks with no days off.
