    Six-pack for Saturday

-- There has never been a Final Four with all four #1 seeds, but this could be the year. What an awful set of games last night-- just four one-sided contests, with Texas-Stanford the only one of the four that was remotely interesting.

-- Over last four tournaments, there have been four overtime games in regional finals, and underdog won all four.

-- In the last five years, underdogs are 16-4 vs spread in the regional finals. In the last two tournaments, #1-seeds are 2-5 SU in regional finals

-- Halftime score: Memphis 50, Michigan State 20. Wow.

-- With the elevated courts, you figure the teams that played at Minnesota might have an edge, since court at Williams Arena is like that, but both Big 11 teams got bounced Friday.

-- Random theory with no statistical backing: It is easier to upset a superior team in an arena than a dome. Domes are lot more like outdoor games; thats just my opinion.

Saturday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

      13) Xavier’s basketball program turned a $6.4M profit in ’06-07, which helps funds all their other teams. 50.8% of all athletic-related Xavier athletic revenue is generated by the hoop team. They’ve lost coaches before; not sure how long they can keep Sean Miller. If they keep him, they can turn into Gonzaga of the east. If not, they need to make another strong hire.

      12) The sad truth is that NBA cares more about Europe than it does Seattle. Sonics are leaving town, at least in part, because of Hurricane Katrina. When Hornets relocated to Oklahoma after Katrina hit, OC proved it is a viable NBA city, at the Sonic fans’ expense. This is a sad situation for people in Seattle, who gave the team loyal support for 41 years, and scary for fans in other parts of country. It could happen to you, too.

      11) Listening to Charles Barkley, Chris Webber talk about the Seattle situation on TNT Thursday, it showed how out-of-touch many NBA players are with everyday life; they sat there and said how NBA players like to play in new arenas, not older ones. Listen up—these are very tough financial times, at some point, teams are going to have ot suck it up and play in less-than brand-new arenas. Cities have more pressing financial needs, like roads, education, fighting crime. .

      10) They’re expecting 115,000 people for the Red Sox-Dodger exhibition game Saturday night at the LA Coliseum, where the Dodgers played before Chavez Ravine was built. This game is commemorating the 50th anniversary of Dodger’s move to LA, still not a popular subject with my dad, who is from Brooklyn. .

      9) Emil Brown is solid pickup by the A’s; he might struggle running the bases, but the dude can hit; he has gotten 500+ AB’s twice in his career, and hit in high-.280’s both years, with 80+ RBI on a bad Royals team. He’s going to help the spunky A’s this season, which is good, because they need help.

      8) Brown has had an odd trip through pro baseball; drafted by the A’s in 1994, he made big leagues with Pirates four times, then was out of major leagues from 2002-04, briefly landing in the Mexican League. Royals picked him up, and he showed he can hack, but they cut him loose last winter, and now the A’s are giving him a chance. He could probably write a great book about his career.

      7) Angels’ Ervin Santana has a career record of 35-30, 4.84, but on road, he is 10-21, 7.14. With Lackey, Escobar out injured, Halos need Santana to step up this spring.

      6) So far this spring, there have been 27 coaching changes in D-I basketball, with ten of the 26 openings filled. Jim Christian left Kent State for TCU Friday. Indiana, South Carolina, LSU, Cal are the big jobs open right now.

      5) The Atlantic 10 (with 14 teams in it) needs better cable deal. Pretty good league, pretty poor exposure; they have teams in Philly, St Louis, Cincinnati, NYC, Pittsburgh—whats wrong with a weekly slot on ESPN, or at least CBS College Sports (formerly CSTV)?

      4) Kenny Anderson made over $60M during his NBA career, but still had to file for bankruptcy; he has had three wives and has seven kids, and now hopes to coach in the NBA someday. He is only 37, and has already blown $60M? Another guy that needs to write a book.

      3) Observers from Florida note the Phillies didn’t look too hot in spring training this month. Mets and Braves improved their teams, so Phillies need to be on top of their game if they hope to repeat this year. They can't afford another slow start.

      2) Chiefs’ coach Herm Edwards was only NFL head coach at Boston College for Matt Ryan’s workout March 18. Drafting a QB would give Herm a little more job security heading into 2008. I'd be unhappy if he coached my favorite team.

      1) The most underrated record in baseball? September 1957, Ted Williams reaches base safely 16 times in row (four HRs, two singles, a HP and nine walks). In 51 years since, no one has matched it, and you never hear a word about it. God forbid Derek Jeter challenge the record someday, it would become the Holy Grail of baseball milestones. For now, this is my favorite all-time baseball record.

West Regional Final - US Airways Arena (Phoenix, AZ)

#3 Xavier vs. #1 UCLA [CBS | 6:40 PM ET]

Xavier: The Musketeers continued to show a ton of character in rallying back to beat West Virginia 79-75 in Thursday's West Regional Semifinals. They blew an 18-point first-half lead but limited the Mountaineers to just 1-of-11 shots from 3-point range while sinking 11 of their own. Josh Duncan scored a career-high 26 points to lead Xavier and will likely be matched up with UCLA's Kevin Love. Duncan managed to stay in the game despite picking up his fourth foul with 12 1/2 minutes in regulation and got West Virginia star Joe Alexander to foul out early in OT, which was the turning point.

Xavier is 3-0 ATS in the NCAA Tournament.
The OVER is 7-1 in Xavier's last 8 non-conference games.
The OVER is 8-2 in Xavier's last 10 neutral site games.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: 62

UCLA (-6, O/U 129): The Bruins need to improve their offensive play against pressure defense if they hope to make it to their third straight Final Four, which would be the first time since John Wooden was head coach. They struggled at times against Western Kentucky and can expect more fierce defense by Xavier. UCLA turned the ball over 11 times in the first 13 minutes of the second half and saw a 41-20 halftime lead shrink to 61-57. It's worth noting that 7 players picked up at least 4 fouls in that game while 9 players tallied at least 4 in the other semifinal. The Bruins have a slight edge in depth though the Musketeers have more balanced scoring.

UCLA is 1-4 ATS in its last 5 games overall.
The OVER is 6-2 in UCLA's last 8 Saturday games.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: 68

East Regional Final - Charlotte Bobcats Arena (Charlotte, NC)

#3 Louisville vs. #1 North Carolina [CBS | 9:05 PM ET]

Louisville: The Cardinals remain 1 of the 2 most dominant teams in the NCAA Tournament so far, winning their 3 games by an average of more than 22 points. The problem is, they will be facing the single-most dominant team in the Tar Heels, who are winning by more than 30 per game. Louisville has to feel very confident defensively though after limiting Tennessee to just 60 points - more than 20 points below the team's season average - in Thursday's semifinal victory. The Cards also saw a 24-8 lead over the Vols cut to 37-36 but shot 67 percent in the second half (14-of-21) to seal the deal. "We can weather a storm," Louisville guard Andre McGee said. "And that shows a lot about our character as a basketball team."

Louisville is 12-2 SU & ATS in its last 14 games overall.
Louisville is 3-0 ATS in the last 3 meetings.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: 70

North Carolina (-5.5, O/U 154.5): The Tar Heels have blitzed opponents offensively through the first 3 rounds, but they have not faced a team with a similar caliber of talent until now. Louisville has used a suffocating pressure defense to limit teams to less than 61 points per game this year. Meanwhile, Thursday's 68-47 semifinal win over Washington State marked just the third time North Carolina failed to score at least 72 points in a game. The Tar Heels have won all 3 of those games, going 2-1 ATS and proving they can succeed at a slower pace.

North Carolina is 3-0 ATS in the NCAA Tournament.
North Carolina is 8-3 ATS in its last 11 non-conference games.
The OVER is 7-3 in North Carolina's last 10 non-conference games.
The OVER is 7-2-1 in North Carolina's last 10 games as a favorite.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: 75

                      Saturday's NCAA Games

Xavier is 16-2 in last 18 games, with both losses vs St Joe's- all three of their tournament games have been tough, with Xavier coming back from 9+ points down to beat Georgia and Purdue. UCLA won last 13 games but covered just four of last 11- they play well in spurts, not for whole 40:00. They led by 21 at half vs Western Kentucky Thursday-- lead got down to four in the second half. Musketeers played one Pac-10 team this season, and lost by 22 at Arizona State (77-55 on Dec 15). Xavier is 2-0 vs spread as an underdog this season.

We know that #1 seeds are 2-5 SU in regional finals in last two tournaments; we know underdogs are 16-4 vs the spread in the last 20 regional finals, with ten outright upsets, but Tar Heels have been awesome in first three tournament games, winning by 39-31-21 points. Louisville is 2-1 vs spread as underdog this season- their only losses in last 14 games are by three points and by seven in OT, vs Georgetown, Pitt. Carolina had been in a 1-5 funk vs spread coming into this tournament- no more.

Nets are now 1.5 games out of playoffs after losing at Indiana Friday, just their third loss in last eight games- last four Jersey home games went over total. Phoenix snapped two-game skid at Philly last night, winning by 14- they're 8-2 in last 10 games.

Cavaliers are 3-5 in last eight games, dropping last five on road by 11-5-2-14-10 points- their only road win in eight tries since the Chicago trade was in NY, so that almost doesn't count, as hideous as NY is. Pistons won their last five home games; four of their last five games overall stayed under the total.

Chicago lost eight of last 11 games, falling out of playoff race after loss to Hawks Friday; home side won both their games vs Milwaukee this season. Bucks lost last three games, by 5-19-17 points; they covered two of last ten tries as the underdog.

Nuggets won last four games, scoring 118 ppg; despite strong record, they're on outside of playoff race, need win here to get game closer to Warriors, who are just 4-4 in last eight games, with seven of their last ten staying under total. Road team won both Denver-Golden State games this season.

Bobcats won in Seattle Friday, third win last four games; under is 7-1 in last eight Charlotte games. Blazers (+5.5) lost 101-92 in Charlotte Nov 19. Last four Portland games stayed under total, with Trailblazers 6-8 vs spread in last 14, 5-5 SU in last ten.

Grizzlies beat Lakers last night, come back to same arena here and try to hand Clippers their 11th loss in row (3-7 vs spread). Four of last five Clipper games went over the total. Clippers are 2-1 vs Memphis this year. Grizzlies covered seven of last eight.
