    Six-pack for Tuesday

-- According to chart below, there are four teams tied for the best in baseball: Red Sox, Detroit and both New York teams, all of whose over/unders are 93.5.

-- Baltimore (65.5) would appear to have lowest expectations, with an over/under of 65.5.

-- After the Mets, it is six-game drop to Phillies, Dodgers and Cubs in the NL, all of whom have over/under of 87.7.

-- A's won 77 last year and underachieved; if they somehow win 77 this year, they'll be a pleasant surprise (73.5)

-- You have to take quite a leap of faith to go over on Tampa Bay (also 73.5); they've never won more than 70 games.

-- People don't believe in NL champ Rockies, whose total is a mere 82.5. Three other NL West teams have higher totals.

      MLB Tips and Trends

Boston Red Sox vs. Oakland Athletics [ESPN2 | 6:05 AM ET]

      Key Injuries-
Red Sox (-155, O/U 9.5): Native son Daisuke Matzusaka will start Boston's season opener in Japan, and he will do so in front of a "new" Red Sox nation. Thousands of Japanese fans have adopted the defending World Series champions as their team thanks to the presence of Dice-K and All-Star reliever Hideki Okajima. Boston manager Terry Francona has announced that Matzusaka will be limited to about 90 pitches, something the Japanese fans are not accustomed to since he is well-known for pitching complete games for the Seibu Lions.

Boston is 3-0 SU in the last 3 meetings.
The UNDER is 19-7 in Boston's last 26 games on field turf.

      Key Injuries- NONE

      PROJECTED SCORE: 6

A's: Oakland split 8 meetings with the Red Sox last season, and the team is not overly impressed by the defending champs. “They are just peers of ours,” A's closer Huston Street said. “We’re definitely not intimidated. We came over here and we expect to win. To have the World Series champions here is nice for the series, but we want to win.”

Oakland is 2-10 in its last 12 regular-season games.
The UNDER is 7-3 in Oakland's last 10 games on field turf.

Key Injuries- 3B Eric Chavez (back) did not make the trip.

      PROJECTED SCORE: 3

          Tips and Trends
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Antonio Spurs at Orlando Magic [NBA | 7 PM ET]

Spurs: San Antonio defeated the Mavericks 88-81 on Sunday and moved into a tie with Houston in both the Southwest Division and Western Conference playoff standings. The Spurs have won 3 in a row with offense and defense. During their current streak, they have scored an average of 97 points per game while allowing just 83 ppg. The Spurs defeated the Magic in the last matchup by 18 points, while scoring 128 – their highest offensive output of the season.

Spurs are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games vs. Southeast Division.

Key Injuries- F Robert Horry (2 ppg; knee) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 96 (Side Play of the Day)

Magic (-1, O/U 191.5): The Magic will get their twice-a-year, up-close look at the defending champion Spurs, the team that both head coach Stan Van Gundy and GM Otis Smith talk often about trying to emulate. Although the Magic won a thriller at home against San Antonio last season, they have won only 3 of the last 13 meetings. Orlando has had its problems defending against guards, and Tony Parker had 32 points and 9 assists in the last meeting.

Magic are 9-2-1 ATS in their last 12 home games.

          Key Injuries- NONE

          PROJECTED SCORE: 95

Atlanta Hawks at Chicago Bulls [8:35 PM ET]

Hawks: With their playoff hopes hanging in the balance every time they suit up, Hawks coach Mike Woodson said he doesn’t really have to worry about his team losing focus. His players agree. “We’ve got to have the mindset that we’re playing the championship game every night,” Marvin Williams said. Atlanta has won 4 out of 5 while averaging a lofty 109 ppg.

Hawks are 3-10 ATS in the last 13 meetings.

Key Injuries- G Salim Stoudamire (5 ppg; ankle) is questionable.

          PROJECTED SCORE: 100

Bulls (-4.5, O/U 205.5): With 13 games still remaining, the Bulls could obviously make up some ground in the Eastern Conference playoff race with a strong finish. But after playing 4 games in 5 nights this past week, Chicago has a tough upcoming schedule. Still, the Bulls have won 12 of the last 13 meetings with Atlanta, including 6 straight at home. They won at the United Center 90-78 back on November 27th and according to head coach Jim Boylan, “there’s no quit in us.”

Bulls are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall.

Key Injuries- G Chris Duhon ( 6 ppg; flu) is questionable.

          PROJECTED SCORE: 105

Washington Wizards at Portland Trail Blazers [10 PM ET]

Wizards: Washington is fresh off an impressive victory over the Pistons on Sunday night that saw the team shoot an impressive 53 percent from the field. In moving 3 games above .500, the Wizards have strung together some big-time wins over some of the better teams in the league. Washington has won 6 of 7, boosting its offensive average to 101 ppg in the process.

The UNDER is 8-2 in Washington's last 10 games as an underdog.

          Key Injuries- NONE

          PROJECTED SCORE: 95

Blazers (-1, O/U 190.5): This is one of the tougher opponents the Blazers have faced in a while, which isn’t saying much as Portland has been taking on teams like the Clippers and Sonics of late. The Blazers have been up-and-down lately, but they are still 24-10 at the Rose Garden, and the only 2 home losses they have suffered in the last month were both to the Suns.

Blazers are 2-12 ATS in their last 14 home games.

          Key Injuries- NONE

          PROJECTED SCORE: 96

                Tuesday's NIT Games

UMass went to Carrier Dome, beat Syracuse 107-100 back on November 28 (+7.5) in game they trailed 51-48 at half. Syracuse bench played only 15 minutes in that game, with Devendorf in lineup-- Minutemen scored 56 second half points. UMass won eight of last nine games, but are on road for first time since win at George Washington 17 days ago (67-63, -6). UMass is 6-2 vs spread in last eight tries as underdog- they were 14-31 from the arc on that November night in Syracuse.

Florida scorched San Diego State, Creighton at home, after late season meltdown kept them out of NCAAs; Gators shot 50%+ in both NIT games, but are on road for first time since losing at Kentucky 75-70 March 8-- they're 1-3-1 vs spread in last five as an underdog. Arizona State won its first two NIT games by 13, 14 points; they covered three of last four as favorite- they beat LSU of SEC in OT in Maui Classic back in November.

Massachusetts at Syracuse [ESPN | 7:00 PM ET]

UMass: The Minutemen were able to sink 14 3-pointers in a 107-100 victory at the Carrier Dome back on November 28th, and the Orange have been susceptible to giving up the long ball this season. Syracuse is allowing opponents to shoot over 35 percent from beyond the arc, which could be a big problem again here. However, UMass has made just 14-of-50 (28 percent) so far in its first 2 NIT games combined so far.

UMass is 7-3-1 ATS in its last 11 games vs. Big East opponents.
The OVER is 9-3 in UMass' last 12 non-conference games.

                  Key Injuries- NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 80 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

Syracuse (-7.5, O/U 163.5): Consider this a huge revenge game for the Orange after losing to UMass at home last November. That loss helped keep Syracuse out of the Big Dance, and the players know it. "We owe them one, man," Orange freshman forward Donte Greene said. "The way they beat us, man, that was heartbreaking for us. So we gotta take care of it."

Syracuse 1-9 ATS in its last 10 games vs. Atlantic-10 opponents.

                  Key Injuries- NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 87

Florida at Arizona State [ESPN | 9:00 PM ET]

Florida: The young Gators have responded very well to the scolding they got from head coach Billy Donovan after they were bounced from the SEC Tournament with a loss to Alabama. They have won their first 2 games in the NIT by an average of 26 points, but both of those games were at home. “It was great to see them come out and address some of the things we’ve been dealing with,” Donovan said. “It was good to see them get rewarded for their hard work.”

Florida is 4-9 ATS in its last 13 games overall.

                  Key Injuries- NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 64

Arizona State (-3.5, O/U 133): The Sun Devils seem to be relishing the opportunity to play in the NIT after betting snubbed by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee. They are already building toward next year, when they will have their entire lineup back, led by NBA prospect James Harden. The 6-foot-4 freshman guard announced his intentions to return to school before the tourney, and he and his teammates are now just one victory away from a trip to Madison Square Garden for the semifinals.

Arizona State is 14-6 ATS in its last 20 home games.
The UNDER is 4-1 in Arizona State's last 5 games overall.

                  Key Injuries- NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 68

                      Tuesday NHL Gameday

Alexander Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals will continue their late playoff push on Tuesday night when they play the Carolina Hurricanes. Here's your NHL Gameday . . .

Washington Capitals at Carolina Hurricanes, 7:00pm ET

The Capitals have won five of their past six games to move within striking distance of the final playoff spots in the Eastern Conference. Washington knocked off the Thrashers 5-3 last time out on Friday night, with Ovechkin picking up his 59th and 60th goals of the campaign in the contest. Nicklas Backstrom had two goals and an assist on that night.

The Hurricanes have won eight of their nine games so far in the month of March, and they have a five-point lead on the Capitals for top spot in the Southeast Division. Carolina can pretty much lock up first place in the division with a win on Tuesday. The Canes are coming off a 2-1 shootout win over Florida, with Cam Ward making 36 saves.

Pittsburgh Penguins at New Jersey Devils, 7:00pm ET

The Penguins will be looking to dominate the Devils again when they meet on Tuesday night. Pittsburgh pounded their division rival 7-1 last Saturday, with Evgeni Malkin and Ryan Malone each scoring twice in that contest. Marian Hossa pitched in with three assists in that victory, which vaulted the Penguins into first place in the Atlantic Division.

The Devils have lost each of their past three games to take a tumble down the Eastern Conference and the Atlantic Division standings. Martin Brodeur was pulled after allowing four goals on 19 shots against Pittsburgh last week, and he'll be looking for a better result on Tuesday. Brian Gionta's shorthanded goal was the team's only marker.

Philadelphia Flyers at New York Rangers, 7:30pm ET

The Flyers helped their playoff chances by knocking off the Rangers 4-3 in a shootout last Friday. Philadelphia had taken a 2-0 lead in that contest, but New York managed to tie up the game in the third period and force the extra time. Daniel Briere potted two goals in that big win, while Martin Biron managed to stop 23 of the 26 New York shots.

The Rangers haven't played since that shootout loss on Friday, but they've managed to pick up points in eight of their 10 games so far in the month of March. That's allowed New York to get comfortable in the Top 8 of the Eastern Conference standings, and a strong series of results over the last couple of weeks could move them into the Top 4.

San Jose Sharks at Phoenix Coyotes, 10:30pm ET

The Sharks have gone 10-0-1 in the month of March, and they're now looking like a good bet to win the Pacific Division and end up with the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference. San Jose got past rival Anaheim 2-1 on Friday, with Jeremy Roenick scoring the game-winning goal in the third period. Evgeni Nabokov made just 12 saves.

The Coyotes looked like they had an outside chance of making the playoffs a couple of months ago, but a 3-6-1 record over their past 10 games has knocked them out of contention for a berth. Phoenix hasn't won since beating Vancouver 2-0 back on March 13, and they fell 2-1 to Anaheim on Saturday with Ed Jovanovski scoring their only goal.
