    Six-pack for Thursday

-- I'm confused as to why Steve Alford isn't top candidate to be the next basketball coach at Indiana.

-- Eight of the ten starters in USC-Kansas State game will be either freshmen or sophomores.

-- There have never been four #1 seeds in the Final Four.

-- The court at Illinois State is named after former NBA coach current TV analyst Doug Collins, an ISU alumnus. I cannot remember another place where court is named for a player.

-- Hotshot high school QB Terrelle Pryor finally decided to go to Ohio State next fall, which means Michigan isn't going to have a QB to run spread offense, unless they can find a junior college QB at the last minute.

-- Bill Belichick, Urban Meyer were courtside at Florida- San Diego State NIT game. Belichick didn't have his Spynoculars with him to follow the action.

Thursday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but............

      13) Every Boston, Oakland player is getting $40,000 for the trip to Japan this week; Major League Baseball, being the weasels they are, tried to back out of paying coaches/staff extra-- but a protest by Boston players got the coaches back their cash.

      12) Heard someone on TV other day say the Houston Rockets aren’t contenders for the NBA title; unless they’re on NCAA probation, why not? They just won 22 damn games in a row, and they’re not contenders? Stupid people and microphones are a bad combination.

      11) Odd stat of the day: George Mason and Notre Dame, who play each other in the first round of NCAAs, have both taken exactly 202 more foul shots than their opponents.

      10) Florida Gators practiced during the NCAA Selection Show Sunday night, seeing as they had no reason to watch it. I’m guessing it wasn’t a very light practice.

      9) Another reason I enjoy fantasy baseball: One of the teams in our league just changed its name to "Client #9" (how Eliot Spitzer was referred to by the investigators of HookerGate)

      8) When teams were seeded for NCAAs, Kentucky’s loss to Georgia didn’t count against them, because of the odd nature of what happened in Atlanta. Georgia was penalized by being scheduled to play Thursday, after playing twice Saturday and again at 3:30 Sunday. Go figure.

      7) I’m a grocery store the other night, and the guy at register has elaborate, colorful tattoos all over his arms—had to ask him how long they took to do. "I have at least 12 hours on this arm, and 15 on the other one." When I asked if it hurt to have his arms tattooed, he said, "It always hurts. Some areas just hurt less than others." He seemed like a good guy, but what if you wake up one day and don’t want the tattoos anymore?

      6) NFL Films laid off 8% of its workforce last week, in part due to HBO cancelling Inside the NFL.

      5) Dodgers are moving to an $80M spring training facility in Glendale, AZ next spring, which makes sense, since Arizona is indeed closer to LA than Florida (you learn a lot reading this website). But lot of history and memories are being left behind

4)…...….81-year old Carl Erskine, the Brooklyn Dodger pitcher who won the first game at Holman Field back in 1953, played the National Anthem on his harmonica before the last game the other day. Weren't many dry eyes in the house.

      3) Only 11 days until the real Opening Day in baseball, 36 days until the NFL Draft.

      2) Allen Iverson received long standing ovation before his first game back in Philly last night; I just hope those people realize that trading Iverson was best thing that happened for Sixers' club that is vastly improved and now actually at .500 for year.

      1) I’m glad John McCain supports the troops; he’s now taken eight trips to Iraq. But how many trips has he taken to New Orleans and the gulf coast? Not only do those people need our help, it is an issue that is going to get thrown in McCain’s face throughout the fall campaign. Its hard to believe he’ll have a good answer. Someone needs to help our citizens, too.

              ----------------------------------------------------------------------

              Thursday's NCAA Games
              Afternoon Card
Georgia went 4-12 in SEC, then won four games last weekend to win conference tourney- having to play early Thursday was no break. Xavier won 13 of last 15 games- they split pair vs the SEC, beating Auburn by 23, losing to Tennessee by 7. #3 seed is 18-14 vs spread in first round last eight years, losing twice-- Kansas in '05, Iowa in '06, both by 64-63 scores. Dawgs lost six of seven games before their historic weekend in Atlanta.

Kansas won first round game by 40 LY, after losing last couple years in first round- they already beat two Big Sky teams this season (E. Washington 85-47; N. Arizona 87-46). Portland St is 39.4% shooting team from arc- they won 14 of last 15, but lost to UCLA by 21, Washington State by 12, 19 to Washington in their high profile games. #1 seeds are just 11-13 vs the spread in first round last six years. Big Sky teams are 6-3-1 vs spread in first round the last decade.

Temple won last seven games, is 6-1-1 vs spread in last eight games as underdog; coach Dunphy went 1-9 in NCAAs while at Penn, but now he has A-14 talent, not Ivy players, and he is good coach. Michigan State is just 5-6 in its last 11 games, but went 12-1 outside of Big 11, losing only to UCLA in game they led by 11 at half. Owls took their lumps in preseason (7-7) but gelled down stretch in improved A-14 (7th-rated league in '08).

Kentucky's best player is out for year, they were 6-7 before the SEC started, are 5-7 vs top 50 teams, but they went 12-5 in SEC games, and here they are, with Jasper their only guy with more assists than turnovers. Marquette is guard-oriented team that is 2-3 in last five games after 8-2 run- they're +126 in turnovers for year, and hold opponents to 29% from arc. When Kentucky job came open LY, Crean had interest, but didn't get interview.

Purdue won last nine first round games (didn't make tourney from '04-'06) despite being dog in four of its last six first round games. Baylor is in NCAAs for first time in 20 years; they play four guards #6 seed in west is 5-2 vs spread as dog last eight years. Baby Boilers split last six games after winning 11 in row; they're sixth in country forcing turnovers, but Baylor's 4-guard offense is 12th in nation protecting ball.

Kent State won 11 of last 12 games, is 28-6 after winning both regular season and MAC tourney. UNLV won six of last seven games; they won conference tourney again despite losing five guys from LY's Sweet 16 team. Kent ranks 194th, UNLV 237th in pace, so this should be low scoring game. Favorite is 6-2 in 8-9 games the last two years. LY was first time Rebels won in NCAAs since Tark made Final Four in '91.

Oral Roberts lost to Texas A&M by 14, Arkansas by 11, Texas by 10, Creighton by 1, but they did beat Oklahoma State; their leading scorer doesn't start. Titans are in NCAAs third year in a row, losing last two years to Washington State (70-54, +7), Memphis (94-78, +16). Pitt won Big East tournament last week. Both teams rank high in defensive efficiency; doubt ORU has seen many teams as physical as Panthers.

Last time Cornell was in NCAAs was 20 years ago, when they lost 90-50 to Arizona in year Wildcats made the Final Four. Big Red went 14-0 in Ivy, but its been 10 years since Princeton got Ivy League's last NCAA win (1-8 vs spread in last nine NCAA games). This year, Cornell lost by 16 at Syracuse, beat Siena, lost by 14 at Duke (this was 41-32 at half- Jan 6, their last loss). Stanford beat Harvard 111-56, Yale 72-61 of Ivies this year.

              Night Card
USC won six of last eight games, is 11-6 in road/neutral games; they hold opponents to 39.1% from floor. Kansas State is 3-6 in last nine games, loisng five of last six games on road/neutral courts. OJ Mayo (237 more shots than any other Trojan) went to high school with K-State's Walker, is up for freshman of the year honor against Beasley (180 more shots than any Wildcat) Take away Beasley, and K-State shoots just 30.9% from arc.

Belmont is in NCAAs for third year in row, losing 80-55 a year ago to Georgetown (+16), 78-44 to UCLA in 2006 (+20); this yr, they won at Cincinnati, Alabama, but also lost by 41 to Xavier and 15 to Austin Peay. Duke is 0-5 vs spread in first round the last five times they weren't a #1 seed, 1-4 vs spread in last five first round games overall. Duke split its last eight games, are
7-5-1 vs spread as non-ACC favorite this season.

Winthrop ended 15-year losing streak for Big South teams last year, upsetting Notre Dame, but Big south teams are 5-0 vs the spread in last five first round games; Washington State lost in double OT in second round to Vandy LY; they covered five of last seven as favorite, but Coogs, who have very little depth, split last six games overall. Wazzu took 166 more free throws than their opponents this year; they're 12-0 outside of Pac-10.

BYU is 14-2 in last 16 games, Texas A&M 4-6 in its last 10- the erratic Aggies trailed 28-10 at halftime in game this year, when they had 56 at the half in previous game, and beat Baylor in its next game. Cougars held foes to 38.6% from floor, are +109 in foul shots tried, but last time they won first round game was in 1993 (lost last five NCAA games). Aggies are -50 in turnovers, but won first round NCAA games last years (Syracuse, Penn).

Fullerton is rare NCAA team that starts four seniors; they're #5 in country in scoring (82.6 ppg), won eight of last nine- they're small team (tallest starter is 6-5) that makes 38.6% of 3's-- they lost 91-65 to Arizona, 69-59 to St Mary's,. Big West are 6-3 vs spread in last nine first round games. Wisconsin won last ten games, including Big 11 tourney, covering six of its last eight; they're 5-1 in first round under Ryan, winning by 10-7-12-5-13.

West Virginia won NIT LY, won five NCAA games in the two years before that, so their kids are used to winning in March, while Arizona has interim coach, is 4-8 in last 12 games, losing last four that weren't against Oregon State. WVU starts pair of juniors, two seniors; UofA starts a freshman and three sophs. Huggins is 10-2 in last dozen first round games. Last six times Arizona was lower than 3 seed, they went 2-4 in first round.

Notre Dame won seven of its last nine games, but allowed 80+ points in five of last seven; they got upset by Winthrop in first round LY, so they will not look past George Mason squad that made Final Four in '06. Patriots turn ball over only 12.2 times a game, are +202 in FTs tried. CAA teams won two of last three first round games, ending 1-9 first round skid. Mason hasn't played in nine days; they're 1-3 vs spread as an underdog.

Mississippi Valley State (15-15) should have been in Dayton for play-in game; they started season 0-8, shoot just 40.6% on FG tries, score just 62 ppg. SWAC teams are 5-3 vs spread the last eight first round (not play-in) games. UCLA's issues here revolve around health of couple of their big guys- with game against either BYU/Texas A&M looming, they might rest guys. Bruins 3-1 in first round under Howland (wins by 22-34-28 pts).

              Thursday's NIT Games
Investing in NIT, CBI games is not advised; no one wants to play in these games, travel is sub-standard, enthusiasm for the home team won't be the same; people are frontrunners. So with that in mind, here is a little bit of info on these games.......

Syracuse survived 18-41 barrage from beyond arc vs Robert Morris in first round; Orange is 4-3-1 vs spread as a home fave in non-Big East games. Maryland is 10-5 outside of ACC, but lost last three games, five of last six- they covered six of last nine as the dog. Terps played in Minnesota Tuesday, where they beat Gopher team playing without its best player, now go to Syracuse and face depleted Orange squad.

Arizona State is 7-5 as a favorite this season; interesting to see if their style of play will bother sturdy defense of Salukis, who scored 49 points in losing two of last three games; they're 7-6 out of Missouri Valley, despite being the favorite in 12 of the 13 games. Salukis got crushed 70-45 by USC, their only game against Pac-10 foe. ASU is 11-2 outside of conference play.

              Friday's NCAA Games
              Afternoon Card
Tennessee is 3-2 in NCAAs under Pearl, beating Winthrop by 2 in '06, then Long Beach by 35, Virginia by 3 LY. Vols force 18 turnovers/game, shoot 36% from arc (24.2 tries/game) and like to create fast tempo- they're 2-5 as favorite outside of the SEC. American upset Maryland, but lost by 8 at Dayton, by 27 pts at Georgetown. Patriot League teams covered five of last six first round (not play-in) games.

Davidson went 23-0 in Southern Conference, won at Winthrop in Bracket Buster, but otherwise went 1-6 vs D-I foes- they rely on 3's (shoot 36.4% on 25 tries/game). Oddly, favorite is 9-3 vs spread in 7-10 games last three years. Gonzaga won eight of last nine games, is 12-6 on road/neutral courts- with this game in Raleigh, it will be pro-Davidson (from Charlotte) crowd, for sure. Gonzaga is 7-2 in first round last nine years, losing LY to Indiana in first round- dog is 8-3 in their last 11 tourney games.

Drake, Western Kentucky both start three seniors; Bulldogs (28-4) won by 22-8-30 points in MVC tourney- they rank #27 in protecting ball, will be tested by WKU unit that is 15th in US in forcing turnovers. Favorite is 6-2 vs spread in 5-12 games last two years, after being 11-17 in the seven years before that. All of Drake's guys can shoot 3's, except for PG Emmenecker, who is consummate PG. Western (38.9%) actually shoots 3's better.

Miami has nine wins by six or less points; they won tourney in November on neutral court- they're shooting 38.4% from arc, are 13-1 out of ACC, also have win vs Duke. St Mary's started same five guys in every game- they're 2-3 in its last five games, but rank 14th in country in defensive FG%. Miami's top scorer McClinton shoots it better % outside arc than inside. Miami is 40th in country in scoring from foul line.

Great contrast in style with athletic South Alabama facing the veteran Butler backcourt; Bulldogs beat Mississippi State, lost in double OT at Vandy, by 3 ay Ole Miss, so they're worthy of at-large bid they got, and are 8-2 in last ten games. Butler lost at home to Drake Feb 23, its only loss in last 14 games- they're starting four seniors who played in Sweet 16 LY, but they have new coach, while USA has edge with veteran mentor Arrow. Having game in Birmingham doesn't hurt Jaguars any.

UMBC turns ball over just 9.5 times a game, 2nd-best turnover % in country; three starters play 33+ minutes, so they're not so deep, but longer TV timeouts in NCAAs help that. Georgetown relies on shot blocking Hibbert rather than pressuring the ball, it will be interesting to see if Retrievers (shoot 39% from arc) can do damage in half court sets. Hoyas will know who likely 2nd round foe is when they take floor, better not look ahead.

San Diego won five in row, 13 of last 15 games, but they're here because they won WCC tourney at home, rallying from a 17-pt deficit to beat St Mary's in semis. UConn sleepwalks thru first NCAA games; they are 14-0 in first round games since '90, but 1-8 vs spread last nine. Huskies didn't make tourney LY; they are 3-3 in last six games. Neither side has a senior starter. USD shoots only 34% from arc; hard to challenge UConn inside.

Austin Peay hasn't played in 12 days; they're 31st in country in forcing turnovers, 3-3-1 as dog. Peay lost at Vandy, 81-67, at Utah State 71-68, 104-82 at Memphis, but they won last six in a row. No one protects ball better than Texas, which starts pair of juniors and three sophs. Longhorns are 1-3-1 vs spread in last five games as favorite. Peay shoots 38% from arc, taking over 20/game. #2 seeds are 4-8 vs spread in first round the last three tournaments.

              Night Card
St Joe's lost in OT to both Gonzaga, Creighton, lost in finals of A-14 tourney when they were playing fourth day in row, but a pair of wins vs Xavier (with former Oklahoma guard Lavender) got them in here. Hawks shoot 38.5% from arc, have taken 112 more foul shots than foes. Classic matchup of offensive team vs defensive club. Oklahoma won four of last five games- they won last nine times they scored 60+ points.

Siena is yong, athletic, likes to pressure; Vanderbilt ranks #22 in effective FG%, #85 in protecting ball, so unless Saints turn them over more than usual, Vandy will shoot open layups and 3's all night-- they make 40.4% from arc. Commodores are 15-0 outside SEC, but they allowed 80.4 ppg last five games, with two of those games going OT. Three seniors start for Vandy team that made Sweet 16 LY, narrowly losing to Georgetown.

North Carolina won last 11 games, covered one of last six; they start three sophomores, have to be looking ahead at least little bit to winner of Arkansas-Indiana game. Mount St Mary's won nine of last 10 games- they won two road games in conference tourney, then won play-in game- they only have one senior in rotation, no starter taller than 6-7. #1 seeds are 11-13 vs spread the last six years- #1 seed in East is 2-7 vs spread in last nine.

Oregon-Mississippi State pits #4 team in offensive efficiency vs #16 team in defensive efficiency; perimeter-oriented Ducks against shotblocking Bulldogs. Oregon starts three seniors, all of whom already graduated college- they lost twice to USC, the Pac-10 team that probably most resembles Bulldogs. MSU won 8 of last 11 games; three of last six went into overtime. Ducks shoot 40.1% from the arc. State starts three sophomores.

Last time Boise State made NCAAs, they lost to Louisville by 67-58 score (+18), in '94; Broncos start four seniors- they lost last two home games by 23-19 points, then went to Las Cruces and won WAC tourney, beating home team in final.Louisville should get all info it needs on Boise from New Mexico State, coached by former Pitino aide Menzies. Shooting is what Boise does best (three of top four scorers shoot 43%+ from arc).

12-seed Villanova is last team in field; they lost to NC State by point on bad call at end of game, their only game vs ACC unit this year. Wildcats have no seniors, were 3-7 in road/neutral Big East games, are 5-5 vs spread as underdog. Clemson made ACC semifinals last week for first time since '62; they're 6-3 vs spread in last nine games as favorite. Tigers beat DePaul by 16 in their only game against Big East team this season.

Arkansas starts four seniors, but Weems is banged up, he is expected to play; Hogs are 1-8 in last nine games scoring less than 75 points. Indiana's play slumped after Sampson left, with Hoosiers losing three of last four games, losing last two in OT at Penn State, then on buzzer beater to Minnesota in the Big 11 tourney. Interesting to see how IU's young guards handle the Arkansas pressure. Both teams shoot below 35% from arc.

Texas-Arlington ranks #57 in pace, which means they're going to run with Memphis; Mavericks start three seniors, have all five starters back from LY, with Guignard taking 44% of all the 3's they try (he makes 38.8%). Memphis covered just three of its last fourteen games- they're 7-8 vs spread in its non-league games. Arlngton is out of its league, class-wise; they played a woeful schedule- Oklahoma State was best team they played.

                March Madness Gameday

Day 1 of the Madness gets started on Thursday, so get ready to call in sick and camp out on the sofa all day to make your bets and check up on your bracket. Here’s your March Madness Gameday, including a player to watch from each team.

                Midwest
                Qwest Center Omaha, Omaha, NE

                Portland (16) vs. Kansas (1) – 12:25 pm EDT

The Vikings are making their first trip to the Big Dance after winning the Big Sky Conference tournament by defeating Northern Arizona in the final. Jeremiah Dominguez led the Vikings in scoring during the season, and with his impressive range from beyond the arc he could hit a necessary three-pointer when called upon.

The Jayhawks won the Big 12 tournament after cracking Texas 84-74 in the final. It’s hard to choose one player out of the Jayhawks' impressive starting five, but if there’s a potential standout it’s Mario Chalmers. He netted 30 points against the Longhorns last week and could do it again any time in the Tournament.

Kent State (9) vs. UNLV (8) – 2:55 pm EDT

The Golden Flashes earned their tournament entry by winning the MAC tournament with a 74-55 win over Akron in the final. Al Fisher burst on to the scene this season to lead the Golden Flashes in scoring and assists, but he has to watch the turnovers.

The Runnin’ Rebels upset BYU in the Mountain West Conference tournament final to earn back-to-back trips to the Big Dance. With a name like Wink Adams how can you not watch the UNLV guard? He can also shoot the lights out.

Kansas State (11) vs. USC (6) – 7:10 pm EDT

The Wildcats earned an at-large bid after going 20-11 during the season, which included a 10-6 mark within the Big 12. Freshman standout Michael Beasley is a potential No. 1 NBA draft pick, but he will need to unload a ton of points to get Kansas State beyond the opening round.

The Trojans were also an at-large bid winner after a 21-11 season in which they went 11-7 against the rest of the Pac-10. The Trojans have their own freshman superstar in O.J. Mayo. During the regular season Mayo averaged 20.8 points per game, while Beasley was good for 26.5 points per game. Mayo’s better supporting cast could give him the edge.

CSU Fullerton (14) vs. Wisconsin (3) – 9:40 pm EDT

The Titans made it into the tournament for the first time since 1978 after winning the Big West Conference tournament by knocking off UC Irvine 81-66. The Titans need to score a lot to win, which puts all the focus on leading scorer Josh Akognon.

The Badgers rumbled through the Big Ten tournament, with only a tight win over Michigan State exposing any weakness in their hard-nosed defensive style. Wisconsin crushed Illinois 61-48 in the tournament final. Brian Butch is the Badgers’ leading scorer and rebounder, and on a team with such a strong defense he’ll be the one to watch.

                West
                Verizon Center, Washington D.C.
                Honda Center, Anaheim, CA

                Georgia (14) vs. Xavier (3) – 12:20 pm EDT

The Bulldogs’ only chance to play in the Big Dance was to win the SEC tournament. Not only did Georgia win that tourney but they did it in amazing fashion, which included winning two games in one day after bad weather bottlenecked the tourney schedule. Georgia won all of their tournament games as an underdog, including their 66-57 win over Arkansas in the final. Sundiata Gaines was the man for Georgia during the SEC tourney and he’ll have to keep it up to keep the dream alive.

The Musketeers were upset in the Atlantic 10 tournament semifinals 61-53 by Saint Joseph’s as the No. 1 seed. Despite the loss, Xavier still earned an at-large bid after residing in the Top 25 throughout much of the season. Guard Drew Lavender is the kind of player that can be a hero in the Tournament. He can run the offense effectively and also hit the big shot from three-point range.

                Baylor (11) vs. Purdue (6) – 2:50 pm EDT

Despite losing their Big 12 tournament opener to Colorado by a score of 91-84 in double overtime, the Bears still earned an at-large bid in the tournament. Curtis Jerrells paces the Bears’ offense and they’ll likely live or die in the Tournament by his hand.

The Boilermakers also had trouble in the Big Ten tournament, where they were upset by Illinois 74-67 in the first tournament game. Watch out for E’Twaun Moore. He leads the Boilermakers in scoring and is a good three-point shooter.

                Belmont (15) vs. Duke (2) – 7:10 pm EDT

The Bruins won the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament for the third year in a row to make another trip to the Big Dance. Alex Renfroe is incredibly strong off the bench for Belmont and will need to do as much as he can to get the offense moving when he’s on the floor.

Duke ran into Clemson in the ACC tournament semifinals and was knocked out after getting upset 78-74. It’s hard to choose one Duke player that could lead them all the way, but if the Blue Devils do anything this year DeMarcus Nelson will have a big role. He can score, rebound and hit the three when called upon.

                Texas A&M (9) vs. BYU (8) – 7:25 pm EDT

The Aggies were sent packing by Kansas 77-71 in the Big 12 semifinals, but still earned an at-large bid. Josh Carter can be big up front for the Aggies and he'll need to be if Texas A&M doesn’t want an early exit from the Tournament.

The Cougars were the top seed in the Mountain West Conference tournament, but couldn’t handle UNLV in a 76-61 loss in the final. Trent Plaisted has come up big for the Cougars at times during the season, and as their leading scorer and rebounder he’ll have to deliver in the Tournament.

Arizona (10) vs. West Virginia (7) – 9:40 pm EDT

The Wildcats picked up an at-large bid after getting knocked of the Pac-10 tournament by Stanford, 75-64 in the second round. Jerryd Bayless topped the 30-point mark four times during the regular season and can bust out at any time. If he does so in the Tournament, Arizona could make a run.

The Mountaineers were also an at-large bid recipient after getting ripped by Georgetown 72-55 in the Big East tournament semifinals. Alex Ruoff’s name may not stand out on the scoresheet every night for the Mountaineers, but when he does they almost always win.

Miss. Valley State (16) vs. UCLA (1) – 9:55 pm EDT

The Delta Devils edged Jackson State 59-58 in the SWAC tournament final to earn their ticket to the Big Dance. Carl Lucas was the MVP of the SWAC tournament, and unless history is made on Thursday he’ll only have one game in the Tournament to display his skills.

The Bruins matched their first-place finish in the Pac-10 during the regular season with a win in the Pac-10 tournament to secure a No. 1 seed in the Big Dance. Freshman Kevin Love averaged a double-double during the season and could be just what UCLA needs to finally get over the hump this season and bring home another national championship.

                East
                Pepsi Center, Denver, CO

Winthrop (13) vs. Washington State (4) – 7:20 pm EDT

Winthrop returned to the NCCA Tournament again after knocking off N.C. Asheville 66-48 in the Big South Conference tournament final. Chris Gaynor may not lead the Eagles’ in scoring, but he may be the most important player on the floor because he can get it done at both ends of the court.

The Cougars received an at-large bid after their run in the Pac-10 tournament ended against Stanford following a 75-68 defeat in the quarterfinals. Kyle Weaver can do it all for the Cougars, whether it’s scoring, rebounding or passing.

George Mason (12) vs. Notre Dame (5) – 9:50 pm EDT

The Patriots, everyone’s favorite upset team from two years ago, return to the NCAA Tournament after defeating William & Mary 68-59 in the Colonial Conference tournament final. Folarin Campbell and Will Thomas will be the names to know if the Patriots can recapture the magic they possessed two years ago.

The Fighting Irish were beaten up in the Big East tournament, where they lost to Marquette 89-79 in their opener. Luke Harangody was the Big East Player of the Year and should make a name for himself coast to coast in the Tournament.

                South
                Pepsi Center, Denver, CO
                Honda Center, Anaheim, CA

Temple (12) vs. Michigan State (5) – 12:30 pm EDT

The Owls are returning to the Tournament for the first time in six years after winning the Atlantic 10 tournament with a 69-64 win over St. Joseph’s in the final. It will be Christmas in March for Temple, if Dionte Christmas can score his regular 20 points per game and lead the Owls to an upset win.

The Spartans fell to Wisconsin 65-63 in the Big Ten tournament, but did enough during the regular season to warrant an at-large big and a No. 5 seed. Drew Neitzel has been extremely good and also played badly for the Spartans at times this season. Whichever version of Neitzel shows up in the Tournament will decide Michigan State’s fate.

                Kentucky (11) vs. Marquette (6) – 2:30 pm EDT

The Wildcats were a victim of Georgia in the SEC tournament, in a 60-56 overtime loss. Kentucky could stack together a nice run of upsets in the tournament if Joe Crawford and Ramel Bradley come out to play.

The Golden Eagles were stopped in the Big East Tournament semifinals by Pittsburgh 68-61 and had to settle for an at-large bid. Forward Lazar Hayward has shown tremendous growth this season, but he can still be inconsistent at times which could be Marquette’s downfall under tourney pressure.

Oral Roberts (13) vs. Pittsburgh (4) – 3:00 pm EDT

The Oral Roberts Golden Eagles clinched their third straight trip to the Tournament after defeating IUPUI in the Summit League Conference tournament final. Robert Jarvis only started three games during the season, but he was still the Golden Eagles' leading scorer.

The Panthers declared themselves as a serious threat after winning the Big East tournament, which included upsetting No. 1 seed Georgetown in the final. Sam Young leads the Panthers in scoring but guard Levance Fields may be their MVP, which was proven by how much Pittsburgh struggled when he went down with a foot injury midway through the season.

                Cornell (14) vs. Stanford (3) – 5:00 pm EDT

Cornell ended Penn and Princeton’s reign over the Ivy League by making it to the Big Dance for the first time since 1988. The Big Red rely heavily on the three-point shot, and with an amazing 46 percent success rate from beyond the arc, leading scorer Ryan Wittman could lead Cornell to a first-round upset.

The Cardinal made it to the Pac-10 tournament final but ended up losing to UCLA for the third time this season. The Lopez twins, Brook and Robin, both had stellar seasons for the Cardinal, but Brook (their leading scorer) is the standout and will need to keep it up for Stanford to make a run in the Tournament.

#16 Portland State vs. #1 Kansas [CBS | 12:25 PM ET]

Portland State: Not too many teams can put up points with Kansas, but Portland State has been an offensive machine all season. The Vikings shoot 46.9 percent from the field and a gaudy 40.1 percent from three-point range. Portland State's offensive output is even more impressive in their last five games, shooting 54.9 from the field and 48.6 percent from behind the arc. Ironically, the only place Portland State doesn't shoot well from is the free-throw line, where the team has made only 67.1 percent on the season.

The OVER is 7-3 in Portland State's last 10 games overall.

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 62

Kansas (-23, O/U 145.5): The Jayhawks are just 3-3 in their last 3 NCAA Tournament appearances, and many insiders believe this is the last chance for this core of players to make a run at the national championship. They are very well balanced offensively and can survive an off night from any of their Top 4 scorers. The key for this team is their energy level, as they are nearly unbeatable when playing up to their potential.

Kansas is 3-15 ATS in its last 18 Thursday games.

                  Key Injuries - NONE

#9 Kent State vs. #8 UNLV [CBS | 2:55 PM ET]

Kent State (-2, O/U 125.5): The Golden Flashes have won 20 games or more for 10 straight seasons and were ranked in the Top 25 for the first time ever earlier this season after they beat St. Mary's. They followed up that win with a loss to Bowling Green, which may have served as a wake-up call for the conference tournament and Big Dance. Kent State has won 5 straight since then, going 4-1 ATS.

Kent State is 16-2 ATS in its last 18 Thursday games.

                  Key Injuries - NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 64

UNLV: Many believe the Runnin' Rebels are an overachieving bunch this season after last year's Sweet 16 appearance. They were 6-5 SU & ATS during the regular season but were far more dominant at home, where they captured the Mountain West Conference Tournament each of the last 2 years and wound up 20-2 SU & 11-6-2 ATS.

The UNDER is 7-3-1 in UNLV's last 11 games overall.

#11 Kansas State vs. #6 USC [CBS | 7:10 PM ET]

Kansas State: Freshman phenom Michael Beasley set an NCAA record for most double doubles during the regular season and will be a load for any of USC's big men. The problem is, there isn't much offensively besides Beasley and Bill Walker, who are the top scoring duo in Big 12 history. If just one of them is contained, the Wildcats could be done.

Kansas State is 2-8 ATS in its last 10 games overall.

                  Key Injuries – NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 70

USC (-2.5, O/U 141): Like Beasley, O.J. Mayo was one of the most dominant freshmen in the country this season and will likely be headed to the NBA after the Big Dance. Mayo definitely has the better supporting cast though, and the most valuable Trojan could very well be point guard Daniel Hackett, who battled back from a back injury and played a key role in helping the team go 11-4 down the stretch in Pac-10 play.

The UNDER is 22-7 in USC's last 29 non-conference games.

                  Key Injuries – NONE

                  #14 Cal State-Fullerton vs. #3 Wisconsin [CBS | 9:40 PM ET]

Cal State-Fullerton: There couldn't be a much bigger contrast in styles of play between the Titans and Badgers. Fullerton would love to dictate the tempo and turn this into a high-scoring game, as the team averaged more than 80 points per game. However, the Titans need to concentrate on defense as well since hey are just 3-6 SU when giving up more than 80 this season.

Cal State Fullerton is 7-2 ATS in its last 9 lined games.

                  Key Injuries – NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 62

Wisconsin (-11, O/U 133.5): The Badgers have one of the top coaches in the country in Bo Ryan, who has been able to keep the team playing at a high level despite losing Big Ten MVP Alando Tucker and point guard Kammron Taylor from last year's team. They remain strong defensively and are more balanced offensively without Tucker, so insiders would not be surprised to see another run to the Sweet 16.

Wisconsin is 8-2 ATS in its last 10 games overall.

#14 Georgia vs. #3 Xavier [CBS | 12:20 PM ET]

Georgia: The Bulldogs are an easy Cinderella pick as an unlikely entrant to the Big Dance, but bettors need to consider that they won as many conference games (4) in 3 days during the SEC Tournament as they did in the entire regular season combined. They also got the benefit of playing the SEC Tournament close to home, which clearly was a big advantage.

Georgia is 5-1 ATS in its last 6 games overall.

                  Key Injuries – NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 61

Xavier (-8, O/U 129.5): While he may not show up on the injury report, point guard Drew Lavender is still recovering from a sprained ankle. Lavender's status is key, as he scored just 8 points in the team's loss to St. Joe's in the Atlantic-10 Tournament semifinals. The Musketeers have also struggled in low-scoring games, with 3 of their 4 losses coming when they score 60 points or less.

Xavier is 1-4 ATS in its last 5 games overall.

#11 Baylor vs. #6 Purdue [CBS | 2:50 PM ET]

Baylor: There is always a good chance to see lot of points scored when the Bears play. They average 80.7 points per game, hit 74 percent of their free throws and are the nation's 23rd ranked team when it comes to adjusted pace.

Baylor is 8-1 ATS in its last 9 neutral site games.

                  Key Injuries - NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 71

Purdue (-2.5, O/U 143): The Boilermakers have not suffered back-to-back losses since last December 22nd. They went on to win 14 of 15 after that brief skid, and their main weaknesses are that they tend to rely on the 3-point shot too much combined with their youth. In fact, this team should be competing for the Big Ten title for the next few years and likely won't have too much pressure to perform well now.

Purdue is 14-3-1 ATS in its last 18 games overall.

                  Key Injuries - NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 73

#15 Belmont vs. #2 Duke [CBS | 7:10 PM ET]

Belmont: The Bruins are in the Big Dance for the third straight year as champions of the Atlantic Sun, losing each of the past 2 years as a #15 seed. They lost by 25 points to Georgetown last year and by 34 the year before to UCLA, failing to cover both times. However, head coach Rick Byrd does believe this is the most talented team he's had of the 3.

Belmont is 4-2 ATS this season.

                  Key Injuries – NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 67

Duke (-20, O/U 153.5): The young Blue Devils overachieved a bit early on in winning 22 of their first 23 games. They start two sophomores and a freshman, and their top 3 players off the bench are also underclassmen. When they make their 3-pointers, they can beat anybody. However, when those trifectas are off the mark, they could be in trouble since they lack inside scoring.

Duke is 3-7-1 ATS in its last 11 games overall.

                  Key Injuries - NONE

                  #9 Texas A&M vs. #8 BYU [CBS | 7:25 PM ET]

Texas A&M (-2, O/U 129): There have been extreme highs and lows for the Aggies this season after head coach Mark Turgeon replaced Billy Gillispie. But they are back in the Big Dance and have experienced players back from their Sweet 16 appearance a year ago. Texas A&M played a nearly perfect game in beating Texas 80-63 but also scored just 10 points in the first half of a 27-point loss at Oklahoma one game after scoring 98.

Texas A&M is 4-1 ATS in its last 5 games overall.

                  Key Injuries – NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 66

BYU: The Cougars are one of the best defensive teams in this year's tournament, especially when it comes to guarding the perimeter. BYU ranks ninth in the country in field goal defense (38.6 percent) and fifth in three-point defense (29.5 percent). The under could be a good play with the Cougars because along with playing strong defense, they struggle from the free-throw line, hitting just 65.8 percent on the year.

BYU is 6-2 ATS in its last 8 neutral site games.

                  Key Injuries – NONE

#10 Arizona vs. #7 West Virginia [CBS | 9:40 PM ET]

Arizona: The Cats have been dealing with injuries all year long but they are finally healthy heading into the tournament. A lot of people don't think Arizona deserved a bid but now that point guard Nic Wise is back, the Wildcats could be a dangerous team. With both Wise and Jeryyd Bayless both in the lineup this year, Arizona is 16-5 straight up and 13-5 ATS.

Arizona is 8-18 ATS in its last 26 Thursday games.

                  Key Injuries - NONE

West Virginia (-2, O/U 135.5): The Mountaineers rode Joe Alexander to the Big East Tournament semifinals against Georgetown, but they proved once again how vulnerable they are when he is contained and they fail to score at least 60 points. West Virginia is 22-3 when scoring 60 or more but winless when scoring less than 60 at 0-6.

West Virginia is 2-4 ATS in its last 6 games overall.

#16 Mississippi Valley State vs. #1 UCLA [CBS | 9:55 PM ET]

Mississippi Valley State: The Delta Devils didn't exactly set the world on fire in their four lined games this season. Mississippi Valley State went 1-3 ATS and that includes a 71-26 drubbing at the hands of Washington State as a 32-point underdog.

Mississippi Valley State is 1-3 ATS this season.

                  Key Injuries – NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 45

UCLA (-32, O/U 121.5): Many believe freshman center Kevin Love was the missing link to what could have been an NCAA title each of the past 2 years. The Bruins reached the Final Four both times but did not have the inside presence Love provides them with now. While past guards like Arron Afflalo and Jordan Farmar are in the NBA, UCLA has more than capable replacements in Josh Shipp and Russell Westbrook and should get there once again.

UCLA is 36-17 ATS in its last 53 Thursday games.

                  Key Injuries - NONE

#13 Winthrop vs. #4 Washington State [CBS | 7:20 PM ET]

Winthrop: Pressure defense has become synonymous with the Eagles, who held the nation's top scoring team (VMI) to just 41 points on 22.4 percent shooting earlier this season. They also held UNC-Asheville to only 18 first-half points on March 8th en route to the Big South Tournament title. Insiders expect a very low-scoring game here against Washington State, especially since Winthrop also makes less than 60 percent of its free throws.

Winthrop is 3-2 ATS this season.

                  Key Injuries – NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 50 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

Washington State (-8.5, O/U 111.5): The Cougars ranked dead last in the Pac-10 in offensive rebounds during the regular season, which also allowed them to get back on defense and limit transition baskets. They are a veteran team with 3 seniors in the starting lineup and still have the potential to make a run after going 10-8 down the stretch following an impressive 14-0 start.

Washington State is 2-4 ATS in its last 6 games overall.

                  Key Injuries - NONE

#12 George Mason vs. #5 Notre Dame [CBS | 9:50 PM ET]

George Mason: The Patriots rank in the Top 20 nationally in fewest turnovers per game, and none of the team's starters had more than turnovers than assists during the regular season. They are a very disciplined team that made the Final Four just 2 years ago and could pull off another upset here.

George Mason is 16-5-2 ATS in its last 23 Thursday games.

                  Key Injuries – NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 68

Notre Dame (-6.5, O/U 142): Fighting Irish head coach Mike Brey downplayed losing to Marquette in the quarterfinals of the Big East Tournament, instead talking about how that has allowed his team to get rest prior to the Big Dance. This overconfidence does not translate well against an experienced opponent like George Mason, who is certainly capable of beating Notre Dame.

Notre Dame is 7-3 ATS in its last 10 Thursday games.

                  Key Injuries – NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 73

#12 Temple vs. #5 Michigan State [CBS | 12:30 PM ET]

Temple: The Owls have one of the best backcourts in the country, led by Dionte Christmas (20.2 points per game) and Mark Tyndale (15.9). Both players stand 6-foot-5 and will pose matchup problems for Michigan State. However, Temple's depth will be tested, as the team does not have a player above 6-4 coming off the bench.

Temple is 19-7 ATS in its last 26 games overall.

                  Key Injuries – NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 63

Michigan State (-6.5, O/U 134.5): Senior guard Drew Neitzel returned to last year's form in the Big Ten Tournament, and the Spartans' fortunes will likely depend on whether or not he can keep it up. It's worth noting that every 4-year player who was recruited by head coach Tom Izzo has appeared in at least one Final Four before leaving the school.

The UNDER is 11-4 in Michigan State's last 15 Thursday games.

                  Key Injuries - NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 70

#13 Oral Roberts vs. #4 Pittsburgh [CBS | 3 PM ET]

Oral Roberts: The Golden Eagles have averaged just over 60 points per game in their 8 losses this season. That could spell doom against a Pitt team that played outstanding defense in winning the Big East Tournament, limiting 4 opponents to an average of less than 65 points per game.

Oral Roberts is 2-2 ATS this season.

                  Key Injuries - NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 59

Pitt (-10, O/U 127.5): The Panthers became just the second team in Big East Tournament history to win 4 games in 4 days en route to the title. The only other team to accomplish that feat was Syracuse 2 years ago, and the Orange showed they had little left in the tank in the Big Dance by losing in the first round.

Pitt is 6-13-1 ATS in its last 20 Thursday games.

                  Key Injuries - NONE

#11 Kentucky vs. #6 Marquette [CBS | 2:30 PM ET]

Kentucky: The Wildcats rebounded nicely from a rough 7-9 start to finish 18-12. What's more impressive is that they accomplished this without their top player in Patrick Patterson, who remains out with an ankle injury. New head coach Billy Gillispie proved his worth by winning Coach of the Year honors for the fifth straight season, although he will be tested again here with little depth due to injuries.

Kentucky is 9-1-1 ATS in its last 11 games against the Big East.

                  Key Injuries - NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 62

Marquette (-6, O/U 130): The Golden Eagles are very strong in the backcourt but very weak up front. They were 1-5 against Big East teams with dominant big men and also struggle when Jerel McNeal and Dominic James miss their 3-pointers. In their 7 losses this season, McNeal and James combined to make just 10-of-46 from 3-point range (22 percent). The key for Marquette will be to run the court in an effort to test Kentucky's depth.

Marquette is 8-3 ATS in its last 11 games overall.

                  Key Injuries - NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 68

#14 Cornell vs. #3 Stanford [CBS | 5 PM ET]

Cornell: The Big Red went unbeaten in Ivy League play en route to their first conference title in 20 years. They rank in the Top 10 nationally in field-goal and free-throw shooting but don't make it to the charity stripe often because they are primarily a jump shooting team. They can stay in this game if their shots go down, and head coach Steve Donahue has been to the Big Dance before as an assistant at Penn, so he knows about being an underdog.

Cornell is 5-2 ATS in its last 7 games overall.

                  Key Injuries - NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 61

Stanford (-14.5, O/U 136): The obvious advantage the Cardinal has in this game lies in the frontcourt. Cornell has some size in 7-footer Jeff Foote and 6-9 Jason Hartford, but they will have their hands full with the Lopez brothers (Robin and Brook). Stanford also played in one of the top conferences in the country in the Pac-10 and was enjoyed an outstanding season outside of 3 losses to UCLA.

Stanford is 3-0 ATS on neutral courts this season.

                  Key Injuries – NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 75

San Antonio Spurs at Chicago Bulls [8 PM ET]

Spurs (-4, O/U 188.5) The Spurs are trying to avoid their fourth straight loss for the first time since 2003. Each of San Antonio's last 3 losses have been against teams in the East. However, the Spurs have had a much-needed 2 days off and according to Bruce Bowen it will help them “finish games better.” San Antonio handily beat the Bulls 94-79 back on December 26th even though they were missing Manu Ginobili due to a sprained left index finger.

Spurs are 1-10-1 ATS in their last 12 games overall.

                    Key Injuries- NONE

                    PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Bulls: Chicago is still battling for a East playoff spot, even with an unimpressive record. The Bulls have shown their greatest improvement under interim coach Jim Boylan at home, where they have won 7 of their last 10, while averaging 105 ppg during that span. The team's last 3 wins at the United Center have been against potential playoff teams.

Home team is 3-10 ATS in the last 13 meetings.

Key Injuries- G Chris Duhon (6 ppg; flu) is questionable.

Boston Celtics at Dallas Mavericks [TNT | 8 PM ET]

Celtics: Boston looks for its third impressive win in 4 nights after defeating the Bucks and Spurs before ending the Rockets 22-game winning streak on Tuesday. Kevin Garnett said: “We are a focused team” and with these impressive wins they are proving it. The Celtics allow a league-low 90 point per game, and they are giving up an average of 81 points in the 3 wins on this trip.

Celtics are 8-1 ATS in their last 9 games overall.

Key Injuries- G Ray Allen (18 ppg; ankle) is questionable.
