    Six-pack for Wednesday

-- Mount St Mary's beat Coppin State 69-60, advances to get beat-- - I mean, to play North Carolina Friday in Raleigh.

-- Clemson gave Oliver Purnell a contract extension through 2014, reward for a job well done with the Tigers.

-- Todd Linden is hitting .577 this spring for the A's, but will open season at AAA Sacramento anyway, You hit .577 and get sent down, you never had a chance to begin with.

-- Cubs' OF Kosuke Fukudome uses 35-ounce bat in batting practice to build up his arm strength.

-- Arkansas State is going hire former LSU coach John Brady this week, good move by the Jonesboro school.

-- Rockets' 22-game winning streak to an end, with Celtics getting a 94-74 win in Houston. Quite a run, though.

      Wednesday's List of 13: Last-minute NCAA knowledge........

13 things I’ll be looking at in first round of NCAA tournament

      13) USC-Kansas State pits the two best freshmen in country (Beasley/Mayo), two high school teammates (Mayo/Walker) and potential coaching mismatch (former NBA coach Floys vs. former high school coach Martin).

      12) Gonzaga is an underdog to Davidson? Because the game is in Raleigh? Wildcats beat two Division-I teams outside a weak Southern Conference.

      11) Will Siena’s pressure bother Vanderbilt? Commodores are going to shoot layups and open 3’s all night long, if not. While we’re here, there’s no guarantee Vandy can stop Siena, either.

      10) Can Kevin O’Neill get Arizona to act interested for forty minutes? At times in last month, talented Wildcats looked like they wanted season to end; it does the next time they lose.

      9) Georgia played twice Saturday, once Sunday, and has to play Thursday night; they didn’t catch a break from the committee there. Can their magic continue?

      8) Notre Dame lost in first round to Winthrop LY, so George Mason figures to have their full attention. Can Mason re-enact its Cinderella act from 2006?

      7) Winthrop, Washington State both lost in second round LY; neither is as good this year, but one team will get back to second round. Kyle Weaver seems like he is trying to do NBA-type things, instead of just being a real good college player.

      6) Mississippi State has the great shot blocker in VARNAJO, but Oregon takes so many quick 3’s, he might be less useful than usual against the Ducks. If I’m John Calipari, I’m rooting like hell for Oregon to win; Miss State can match the Tigers’ athleticism.

      5) Western Kentucky and South Alabama take on Drake and Butler—Sun Belt Conference takes on the Hoosiers-type teams in tagteam hoops, where teams have different philosophies and styles. Running/pressing vs halfcourt offense/shooters.

      4) The slogan at Oral Roberts University is "Expect a Miracle" ……they’ll need one to beat an improving, healthier Pitt team that just won Big East conference tournament.

      3) Which Texas A&M team shows up- the one that trailed by 28-10 at half at Oklahoma, or one that had 56 points at Texas Tech, at the half? Can BYU get its first NCAA tournament win since 1993?

      2) Tom Crean had interest in the Kentucky job when Tubby Smith left, but never got an interview. Revenge is a dish best served cold.

      1) Can Dan Dakich bail enough water out of Indiana’s sinking ship to get Hoosiers past Arkansas, to a date with Carolina?

              NIT
Investing in NIT, CBI games is not advised; no one wants to play in these games, travel is sub-standard, enthusiasm for the home team won't be the same; people are frontrunners. So with that in mind, here is a little bit of info on these games.......

Dayton is 12-1 outside A-14; they won four of last five games, but is 2-5-1 vs spread in last eight games as favorite- their RPI of 32 is best of teams that didn't make NCAAs. Flyers are 17-6 against teams with RPI lower than 50. Cleveland State lost four of five against top 50 RPI teams; they won six of last eight tilts but covered just two of last six as an underdog.

Virginia Tech feels screwed by NCAA committee, which is no guarantee they'll play well here; Hokies won five of last seven games, losing to Clemson, Carolina by total of three pts-- they are 4-0 vs spread in last four tries as favorite. Morgan State is coached by former Cal coach Bozeman; they won MEAC, but were upset by Coppin State in conference tourney final- they are 1-4 against teams in RPI top 100.

VCU, UAB used to be Sun Belt rivals; Blazers beat Georgia St (86-63), Old Dominion (73-57) of CAA- they lost in overtime to Tulsa in first round of C-USA tourney, after losing to Memphis which followed 7-1 hot streak keyed by sharpshooter Vaden. VCU won eight of last 10 games, but got upset in conference semis to Wm & Mary- they nipped Houston 73-72 of C-USA.

Ole Miss scored 85.8 in winning three of last four games- they lost in double OT to Georgia in first round of SEC tourney and is 13-0 vs non-SEC teams, 3-4 vs spread as non-league favorite Santa Barbara is 10-3 outside of Big West- they had won six in row before losing to Irvine in Big West semis. Gauchos won their last seven Big West road ganes- their league is ranked 18th in country, SEC is ranked fourth.

Florida players got tossed out of practice facility by Donovan, had to practice during NCAA Selection Show; we'll see what effect that has here, vs San Diego State squad that lost three of last five games, scoring 58 or less points in all three losses. Aztecs lost by 8 at Cal, by 5 to St Mary's, by 16 at Arizona, is 4-6 vs spread as dog. Interesting to see how Florida plays here they've lost their last four games, allowing 78 ppg.

Charlotte won five of last six games, but ran out of gas in A-14 semis against Temple; 49ers beat Wake Forest, Salukis and got win at Clemson, but also lost to Monmouth, Hofstra. Nebraska plays terrific defense; they covered seven of last eight games, winning last three at home by 7-18-19 points. Huskers allowed 56.3 ppg in last three games, covering last three as a favorite.

Utah State is great shooting team- they won five of their last six games, covering last three as underdog. Illinois State had to be disappointed not to make NCAAs; they won seven of last nine games, won eight of nine MVC tilts at home. Redbirds are 4-6 vs spread in last 10 games as favorite- they scored 57 pts or less in three of last four games.

Cal Bears were awful at home this season, losing seven of last eight at Haas Pavilion- they beat San Diego State of MVC by 8 but are 2-8 in last 10 games overall. New Mexico has one really good player (Giddens); they're 13-2 out of MWC, they're 8-2 in last ten games, 3-2 vs spread as underdog. Seven of Cal's last ten opponents scored 63 points or less.

              CBI Tournament
Apparently, there is another new post-season tournament this spring; I'm not sure why, but we'll do what we can with it. The gimmick to this tournament is that finals are best-of-3.

Bradley lost three in row, five of last seven games, dropping a pair to Creighton by total of five points- they haven't played in 12 days. Braves are 8-5 outside of MVC, 5-2 vs spread in last seven games as non-league favorite. Cincinnati lost their last six games, with four of last five losses by six or less pts- they are 14-5 vs spread in last nineteen games as an underdog.

Tulsa won, covered their last five home games, winning by 15- 23-31-25-18 points- they won nine of last 12 games, dropping C-USA final at Memphis, playing its fourth game in four days. Would think Tulsa will have enthusiasm here- underdogs were 5-3 vs spread in first night of NIT Tuesday. Miami OH split a pair vs A-14 teams, beating Xavier by hoop, losing by a point to Dayton- they won three of their last four games.

Texas-El-Paso won three of last four games, losing in OT in the A-14 semis to Tulsa, after rallying from a 33-21 halftime deficit. Utah lost six of last eight games, with last two losses both at UNLV- they're 1-4-1 vs spread in last six games as dog. UTEP is 8-4 in non-league games- they covered just four of last ten as a favorite. A-14 is ranked 7th, Mountain West 9th.

Health of Washington's star Brockman a key here; he missed loss to Cal in Pac-10 tourney last Wednesday. Huskies are 1-4 in last five games; they're 6-6-1 vs spread as favorite this year. Valparaiso won four of last five games; they're 1-4-1 vs spread in their last six games as underdog. Fairly long trip for Valpo, from Indiana to Seattle. Big class difference as far as leagues, with Pac-10 ranked #2, Horizon League #11.

                March Madness Regional Preview

Tyler Hans-brough and the North Carolina Tar Heels are the top overall seed in the NCAA Tournament this year, and they are also big favorites to capture the East region.

Vegas oddsmakers have pegged North Carolina as the 4/5 favorite to dispatch all the other teams in their quarter of the bracket and reach the Final Four in San Antonio next month. The Tar Heels got past the Clemson Tigers 86-81 on Sunday in the ACC's championship game, with Hans-brough picking up 18 points and 11 rebounds that day.

Tennessee got stuck with the No. 2 seed in the East region, which means they'll have to get past North Carolina to reach the Final Four. The Volunteers have been pegged at 3/1 odds to win the region, which is the same line given to No. 3 Louisville. Fourth-seeded Washington and fifth-seeded Notre Dame are both listed back at 15/1 odds.

No. 7 Butler is at 60/1 odds to win the East, with No. 8 Indiana at 75/1, and No. 6 Oklahoma behind both of those teams at 100/1. No. 11 Saint Joseph's is also listed at 100/1 odds to reach the Final Four, with the other teams in the East at 150/1 or higher.

The Duke Blue Devils were beaten 78-74 by Clemson in the semifinals of the ACC tournament, and they'll enter the Big Dance as the No. 2 seed in the West region. Vegas oddsmakers have pegged Duke at 5/2 odds to advance to the Final Four this year, while top-seeded UCLA is listed at 4/5 odds to punch their ticket to San Antonio.

Xavier is the No. 3 seed in the West, but they're back at 18/1 odds to win that region. That puts them behind No. 4 UConn, who are at 4/1 odds. No. 7 West Virginia is listed at 20/1 odds, with No. 6 Purdue at 35/1, and No. 5 Drake farther back at 60/1. The rest of the region is at 75/1 odds or higher, including No. 8 BYU who are longshots at 150/1.

The Memphis Tigers handily won the Conference USA tournament on Saturday, blasting Tulsa 77-51 in the championship game. That earned Memphis the No. 1 seed in the South region, and they're listed as 6/5 favorites to reach the Final Four. No. 2 Texas, who fell to Kansas in the Big 12 title game, is second on that Vegas chart at 5/2.

Stanford couldn't hold off UCLA in the Pac-10 championship game, but they're still the No. 3 seed in the South with 3/1 odds to win the region. No. 4 Pittsburgh and No. 5 Michigan State are both listed at 12/1 odds, with No. 6 Marquette at 15/1 odds, and No. 7 Miami-Florida farther back at 60/1 odds. The South longshots begin with No. 8 Mississippi State at 100/1, with every other team in the region at 150/1 odds or higher.

Kansas' win in the Big 12 championship contest gave them the No. 1 seed in the Midwest region for this year's tournament. The Jayhawks have been listed by the Vegas oddsmakers as the 10/11 favorites to win that region. No. 2 Georgetown is second on that list at 2/1, with No. 3 Wisconsin at 10/1, and No. 5 Clemson sitting just back at 12/1.

No. 4 Vanderbilt and No. 6 USC are pegged at 18/1 odds to win the Midwest region, with No. 10 Davidson (50/1) and No. 11 Kansas State (60/1) headlining the longshots. Also, No. 7 Gonzaga is getting long 75/1 odds for this year's edition of March Madness.

Overall, UCLA is pegged as the 9/2 Vegas favorite to win the NCAA Tournament, with Kansas and North Carolina both at 5/1, and Memphis at 6/1 odds. From there it's Texas at 10/1, with Tennessee and Georgetown at 12/1, and both Duke and Louisville at 15/1.

March Madness gets underway on Tuesday night with the annual Play-In Game. This year's opening matchup sees the Coppin State Eagles taking on the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers. Coppin State went just 16-20 this year, but they managed to win the MEAC tournament. Mount St. Mary's (18-14) was the Northeast Conference champion, and they're pegged as 7-point favorites to win on Tuesday night (with the total at 126.5).

They are 10-1 since Yao went out with a broken foot and have won 11 of their last 14 by double digits. Wednesday NHL Gameday

Martin Brodeur and the New Jersey Devils will be looking to knock off the division rival New York Rangers when they battle on Wednesday night. Here is your NHL Gameday . . .

New York Rangers at New Jersey Devils, 7:00pm ET

The Rangers collected points in each of their first five games in the month of March, but they hit the skids over the weekend with back-to-back losses to the Panthers and the Lightning. New York is coming off a 5-2 victory over the Penguins on Tuesday, and they'll be trying to improve their shot at a top-four seed by beating the Devils on Wednesday.

New Jersey is gunning for a first-place finish in the Eastern Conference, and they've managed to win five of their past six games (losing only to Montreal last Tuesday). The Devils beat the Avalanche 4-2 last time out on Saturday, with Brodeur stopping 24 of 26 Colorado shots. Jay Pandolfo and Brian Gionta each had two points apiece that night.

Tampa Bay Lightning at Buffalo Sabres, 7:00pm ET

The Lightning are well out of contention for an Eastern playoff berth, so they'll be trying to avoid rolling over when they meet the Sabres on Wednesday. Tampa Bay lost each of their first five games in March, but they've actually bounced back with victories in their last three games. Mike Smith had a 20-save shutout in their win over the Rangers.

Buffalo is still chasing the final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference, and they'll have to overtake the Flyers, Bruins, or Rangers to advance to the postseason next month. The Sabres have lost five of their eight games in the month of March, but their offense came alive big-time over the weekend with 7-1 and 6-2 wins over Carolina and Toronto.

Anaheim Ducks at Dallas Stars, 8:30pm ET

The Ducks, Stars, and Sharks are engaged in a three-way battle for top spot in the Pacific Division, and the losers of that race could end up playing each other in the first round of the postseason. Anaheim beat St. Louis 5-2 on Saturday, but they'll be without star defenseman Chris Pronger for the next couple of weeks because of a suspension.

Dallas could have run away with the Pacific Division title if they hadn't gone in the tank this month. The Stars have played six games in March, and they've lost all but one of them (blanking the Avs 3-0 on March 9). Dallas fell 5-3 to the Red Wings last Thursday, and they were edged 4-3 by Roberto Luongo and the Canucks in their Saturday outing.

Minnesota Wild at San Jose Sharks, 10:30pm ET

The Wild broke out of a slump over the past few days, getting past the Kings 2-0 on Saturday and the Avalanche 3-1 on Monday. Minnesota had gone 0-2-3 over their previous five games to lose some ground in the Northwest Division standings. Niklas Backstrom made 29 saves versus the Avs, while Brent Burns had a goal and an assist.

The Sharks had their lengthy winning streak snapped on Sunday when they fell 2-1 to the Oilers. San Jose had previously won all seven of their March outings to move into top spot in the Pacific Division. The Sharks will now be trying to hold off the Ducks and Stars in the division, and they have an outside shot at catching Detroit in the conference.

                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
