    Six-pack for Monday

-- Houston Rockets won their 22nd straight game, second-longest streak in NBA history, beating the Lakers Sunday.

-- Final score from Sunday night: Nuggets 168, Sonics 116-- what in the name of World B. Free is going on with Seattle? A couple more games like that, and Sonic fans will load the moving vans for the team on their way to Oklahoma.

-- Padres and Dodgers played in China before a crowd of just over 11,000, as major league teams try to get their hooks into the lucrative Far Eastern market.

-- Hard to be optimistic about Texas Rangers when you see they're giving Sidney Ponson starts in the preseason.

-- Before starting his great announcing career, Dick Enberg was an assistant baseball coach at Cal State-Northridge.

-- Eldrick Woods had been 0-for-21 for week on putts of 20+ feet, before draining a 24-footer on 72nd hole to win another tournament-- he is truly, truly amazing.

Monday's List of 13: Initial impressions of Field of 65.........

      13) CBS and NCAA played the drama card when the last team announced into the tournament was Baylor, an 11-seed bubble team whose program has come a long way from being banned from playing non-league games not too long ago. The kids in Waco exploded with joy when their name was called, always a good thing for television.

      12) USC-Kansas State will get lot of play, with matchup of the elite freshmen, OJ Mayo-Michael Beasley, and fact that Mayo was a high school teammate of K-State's Bill Walker. .

      11) Missouri Valley Conference ranked 8th in Conference RPI, but got only one team in; Illinois State then got a ticket out to Utah State in an NIT game, so bad times for the Redbirds.

      10) UMass had won six games in row, had 17-point lead in the A-14 quarterfinals against Charlotte, but blew that game, and in the process, also went off to NIT-land.

      9) I'm thinking Arizona State wouldn't feel as bad had Arizona not made the tournament, too; ASU's RPI would have been the lowest ever for an at-large team, and their schedule wasn't that good, even though they did hammer Xavier back in December, and they swept their arch-rival Wildcats in two games.

      8) Bob Knight picked a North Carolina-Pitt national title game.

      7) With Florida, Ohio State missing NCAAs, it is first time that last year's national finalists missed next the year's tournament since 1980, when Michigan State, Indiana State didn't make it. Something about Larry Bird and Magic Johnson going pro.

      6) Here in Albany, happy Siena fans are enthusiastic about its first-round matchup with Vanderbilt down in St Pete. Vandy is a Princeton-style team that shoots it well (33.7% of points are on 3-pointers), but aren't so hot on defense. Neither is Siena.

      5) It has been seven years since winner of ACC tourney made it to the Final Four; only one of last six made to regional final.

      4) 13 seeds are just 2-14 against 4 seeds the last four years; in the past, 13's had done better than that (4-8 in the three years before that). .

      3) Clemson as a 5-seed? I think not. USC as a 6? Too low. No way is USC a worse team than Michigan State.

      2) Villanova was the last team in, so Wisconsin's win over the Illini kept the Wildcats in the tournament. It looks like Dayton or Arizona State was the team Georgia's win knocked out.

      1) Seth Greenberg was campaigning for expansion of NCAAs, to "give all these kids a chance to play in March Madness". Apparently, he's never heard of Championship Week, and he is unaware that Georgia earned its way into the tournament by winning four games in four days this week. Everyone has a chance to make tournament. The current system works well.

            Gameday

            Monday, March 17

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
            NBA Gameday
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kevin Garnett and the Boston Celtics will attempt to draw on the luck of the Irish when they take on the San Antonio Spurs on St. Patrick's Day. Here's your NBA Gameday …

Cleveland Cavaliers at Orlando Magic, 7:00pm ET

The Cavs have been up-and-down over the past two weeks as they try to hold on to the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference standings. Cleveland last took on Orlando back on February 11, coming out on top by a final score of 118-111. Former Cav Larry Hughes went off for 40 points in that contest, while LeBron James poured in 29 points.

Orlando seems to be locked into the third seed in the East's playoffs; they're not far from clinching top spot in the Southeast Division, and they probably won't catch either the Celtics or the Pistons in the conference standings. The Magic have won seven of their past eight games, and they're coming off a 122-111 win over the Pacers Saturday.

Atlanta Hawks at Washington Wizards, 7:00pm ET

Only in the Eastern Conference could a team play as poorly as the Hawks over the past two weeks and still be in contention for a postseason berth. Atlanta is battling the likes of New Jersey, Chicago, Indiana, and Charlotte for the eighth seed, and those teams haven't been playing well either. The Hawks lost 102-98 to the Wizards on January 11.

The Wizards have won five of their past seven games to keep themselves in the Eastern Conference's playoff picture, but it looks like they have no chance of catching the Magic for top spot in the Southeast Division. Washington picked up its third straight win on Saturday, getting past the Clippers 119-109. Antawn Jamison scored 36 points.

Boston Celtics at San Antonio Spurs, 8:30pm ET

The Celtics have lost just once during the month of March, and they've already wrapped up first place in the Atlantic Division. However, Boston will be seeing how they match up with the defending-champion Spurs in what could be an NBA Finals preview on Monday night. The Celtics are coming off an easy 99-77 win over the lowly Bucks on Saturday.

San Antonio isn't playing their best basketball right now - they've lost five of their past six games and they've been passed by both the Rockets and the Hornets in the Southwest Division standings. The Spurs were embarrassed 100-75 by New Orleans last Wednesday, and they are coming off a 103-96 road loss to the Sixers on Saturday.

Toronto Raptors at Utah Jazz, 9:00pm ET

Toronto still looks like a solid bet to make the playoffs in the Eastern Conference this season, but poor play over the past couple of weeks has them in danger of slipping to one of the bottom postseason seeds. The Raptors played host to the Jazz back on November 14, losing 92-88. Chris Bosh (knee injury) isn't expected to play on Monday.

The Jazz have built up a lead on the Nuggets in the Northwest Division standings, and they've won seven of their nine games so far in the month of March. Utah impressed with a 110-92 win over the Celtics on Friday, but they then lost 117-115 in New Jersey Saturday. Carlos Boozer did all he could in that contest - he had a game-high 41 points.

Cleveland Cavaliers at Orlando Magic [NBA | 7 PM ET] | Full Matchup

Cavs: Cleveland center Zydrunas Ilgauskas returned to action on Sunday in a win over the Bobcats after missing 7 games with an inflamed disk in his lower back. Ilgauskas totaled 16 points and 9 rebounds in 31 minutes while Ben Wallace had his most productive game as a Cav playing alongside Ilgauskas at power forward with 15 rebounds.

Cavs are 11-5 ATS in their last 16 road games.
Cavs are 23-9 ATS in their last 32 Monday games.

              Key Injuries- NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Magic (-7, O/U 204): Orlando clinched a playoff berth on Saturday with a win over the Pacers, but the team has bigger goals even though it's unlikely Detroit or Boston can be caught atop the Eastern Conference standings. “I think most of our guys did not think other teams would go undefeated and we would lose 15 in a row,” Magic head coach Stan Van Gundy said. “It’s still step by step, and you want to take care of that. Now, the next step would be to wrap up the division, then wrap up the home-court (advantage). We still have a lot to play for and have a very busy week. It’s going to be grueling.”

Magic are 7-1-1 ATS in their last 9 home games.
The OVER is 10-3-1 in the last 14 meetings at Orlando.

              Key Injuries- NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Bulls at New Orleans Hornets [8 PM ET] | Full Matchup

Bulls: Chicago has dropped 3 in a row on the road and will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing home loss to Philadelphia on Friday. The Bulls blew an 18-point lead in the fourth quarter, which was very similar to a home loss to Washington a little more than 2 weeks ago in which they did the exact same thing. They proceeded to lose their next game at Cleveland, the first of 3 straight losses away from home.

Bulls are 2-7 ATS in their last 9 games vs. Southwest Division.
The OVER is 5-1 in Chicago's last 6 games overall.
The OVER is 6-2 in the last 8 meetings.

              Key Injuries- NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Hornets (NA): New Orleans will be trying to match a season high with its seventh straight home win while also looking to avoid losing back-to-back games overall for the first time since the end of February. The Hornets are dealing with ankle injuries to their top 2 scorers in Chris Paul and David West, though the former is expected to play after totaling 14 points and 14 assists in a loss at Detroit on Sunday.

Hornets are 7-3 SU & ATS in their last 10 games overall.

Key Injuries- F David West (sprained ankle) could miss at least 3 more games.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Celtics at San Antonio Spurs [8:30 PM ET] | Full Matchup

Celtics: Boston will be going for its sixth straight road win in a place where the team had lost 17 times in a row before pulling off a 91-85 victory a year ago on St. Patrick's Day. The Celtics play 4 games in 6 days against Western Conference opponents, with another tough matchup against Houston on deck Tuesday.

Celtics are 6-1 SU & ATS in their last 7 games.
Celtics are 10-2 ATS in their last 12 Monday games.
The UNDER is 13-3 in Boston's last 16 Monday games.

Key Injuries- G Ray Allen (ankle; 18.3 ppg) is listed as questionable.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Spurs (NA): San Antonio has dropped 3 games in a row and 5 of 6, surrendering an average of 98.8 points to opponents during that stretch. The Spurs might have the luxury of again playing against Boston minus 1 of the Big 3, as shooting guard Ray Allen is bothered by an ankle injury. They lost to the Celtics back on February 10th even though Kevin Garnett missed the game with an abdominal injury. However, San Antonio was also without Tony Parker.

Spurs are 0-7 ATS in their last 7 games overall.
Favorite is 7-3 ATS in the last 10 meetings.
The UNDER is 6-2 in San Antonio's last 8 games vs. Eastern Conference.

              Key Injuries- NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Raptors at Utah Jazz [9 PM ET] | Full Matchup

Raptors: Toronto is struggling mightily without Chris Bosh, dropping 8 of its last 10 games both SU & ATS without the team's leading scorer and rebounder. Bosh hopes to return from a knee injury sometime this week, and the Raptors hope to avoid sliding any further as the Wizards are just 1 game behind in the race for the fifth playoff spot in the East.

Raptors are 2-8 SU & ATS in their last 10 games overall.

Key Injuries- C/F Chris Bosh (knee) is out indefinitely; Raptors are 2-8 SU & ATS since he was injured.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Jazz (-13.5, O/U 216): A victory against Toronto would tie the franchise record for most consecutive home wins at 19, which seems likely considering Utah has won the last 5 meetings, going 4-1 ATS. The Jazz have the luxury of facing a struggling Raptors team without Bosh and return home from a fairly successful road trip that included a win at Boston.

Jazz are 13-5 ATS during their 18-game home winning streak.

              Key Injuries- NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD
