    Weekend Sports Preview

The sports schedule makes room for one more betting option this weekend as Formula 1 joins a stacked lineup that already includes NBA, college hoops, NHL, AFL and NASCAR.

The NBA gets the weekend started with a busy Friday night that includes 10 games, highlighted by Utah at Boston, the Lakers at New Orleans, San Antonio at Detroit and Philadelphia at Chicago. Also on tap for Friday night is the Clippers at Atlanta, Orlando at Miami, Indiana at Dallas, Charlotte at Houston, Toronto at Denver and Minnesota at Seattle.

There are eight more games on the NBA Saturday schedule, starting with Indiana at Orlando, San Antonio at Philadelphia, the Clippers at Washington, Utah at New Jersey and Boston at Milwaukee. Saturday’s late games include Sacramento at Phoenix, Minnesota at Portland and Memphis at Golden State.

The NBA closes out the weekend on Sunday with seven more games, including a possible playoff preview between the Lakers and Houston. The rest of the Sunday games include New Orleans at Detroit, Dallas at Miami, Charlotte at Cleveland, Atlanta at New York, Seattle at Denver and Toronto at Sacramento.

In college basketball it’s an extremely busy weekend with conference tournaments deciding who will be going to the Big Dance from coast to coast. All college hoops games for this weekend are TBD, with the schedule being set less than 24 hours in advance in most cases. Some of the conference tournaments scheduled for this weekend includes the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, SEC, Pac-10, Conference-USA and the Big East.

The NHL inches closer to the playoffs with a number of teams in the playoff hunt in action on Friday, including Atlanta at Washington, Carolina at Buffalo, the Rangers at Florida, and Chicago at Columbus. Also on the Friday slate is St. Louis at San Jose.
Ten more games follow on Saturday, with a number of other potential playoff teams in action including Philadelphia at Boston, Nashville at Detroit, New Jersey at Colorado, Vancouver at Dallas, Buffalo at Toronto and the Rangers at Tampa Bay. The rest of the Saturday NHL schedule includes the Islanders at Montreal, Los Angeles at Minnesota, Edmonton at Phoenix and St. Louis at Anaheim.

On the ice on Sunday there are seven games, starting with Philadelphia at Pittsburgh, Calgary at Chicago, Ottawa at Carolina and Boston at Washington. Also on Sunday is Detroit at Columbus, Atlanta at Florida and Edmonton at San Jose.

Week 3 in the AFL kicks off on Friday night with a doubleheader, as Chicago takes on Grand Rapids and Utah faces Orlando. There are three AFL games on tap for Saturday night, including Cleveland at Columbus, Los Angeles at Georgia and Arizona at San Jose. On Sunday, New York travels to Philadelphia and Tampa Bay visits New Orleans

It’s a busy weekend on the track as the new Formula 1 season begins in Australia and NASCAR rolls into Bristol.

The first race of the new F1 season, the Australian Grand Prix, goes on Sunday at the Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit at Albert Park. Kimi Raikkonen won this race last season and he’ll battle Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton for the podium this year.

The drivers of NASCAR head to Bristol Motor Speedway for the Food City 500 on Sunday. Kyle Busch won at Atlanta last weekend and he also won this race at Bristol last year.

Friday's List of 13: Wrapping up busy college hoop day........

      13) TCU made 17-23 3-point shots at UNLV Thursday, but lost 89-88, when Wink Adams converted a 3-point play with 0:03.8 left to play, in what had to be the wildest game of a wild day.

      12) Ole Miss twice trailed by three with under 0:10 to play, and twice had a shooter fouled while trying a trey-- both times, the shooter went 3-3 from the foul line, but Georgia scored a hoop with 0:00.4 left and probably sent the Rebels to the NIT.

      11) Halfway through first half, we had this score: Alabama 29, Florida 5; Gators become a favorite to win the NIT.

      10) Other teams who had very bad days: UAB, Baylor, both of whom lost in overtime games, when favored to win. Now they have to sweat from now until Sunday at 6pm. Its not fun.

      9) Mid-American Conference was most formful league, with all four favorites winning and covering Thursday night. Favorites in Pac-10 won all four games, but dog Arizona State covered.

      8) Notre Dame, UConn, Louisville all went home without a win in this year's Big East tournament, as lower seed won last three games of the day. Irish have awful lot of trouble containing the quick backcourt of Marquette.

      7) Big leads are no guarantee of victory; Northwestern led by 13 at half, lost to Minnesota; Maryland led Boston College by 20-5 early, still lost; UMass was up 17 at half, lost to Charlotte; Hawai'i led Boise by eight at half, lost 80-74.

      6) Georgia's game didn't end until 12:30am, so Kentucky has an advantage in playing a thin, tired Bulldog squad Friday night.

      5) Louisville won lot of games late in season, but they still look like a team with chemistry problems, as no point guard stepped up to be a leader. Pitt was more physical than Cardinals, and if refs let the boys play, thats a deciding factor.

      4) Roy Hibbert didn't score for Georgetown, but Hoyas made up for it by making 17 of 28 treys in their easy win against the Villanova Wildcats. Hoyas have rematch of their controversial win at West Virginia Friday night, in the Big East semis.

      3) CNN did a feature on Michelle Obama; in it, they said Craig Robinson, her brother, went to Princeton on hoop scholarship. Robinson, now basketball coach at Brown, went to Princeton, but he didn't go on a basketball scholarship, since schools in Ivy League don't award athletic scholarships.

      2) It will be weird to see Arizona in the NIT; last time they were not in NCAA's, I was half as old (24) as I am now. Tough times for Kevin O'Neill; for whatever reason (schedule too tough on a roster that is too thin), this team just never gelled.

      1) Bubble teams have heavy burdens on them in a conference tournament; when they play a lesser team, they almost always play tighter than the underdog, and its hard to play good ball when you're not relaxed. That was apparent on Thursday.

Lakers (-1.5, O/U 208.5): The Lakers begin their most trying road stretch left of the season with this game against the Hornets with the Rockets, Mavs and Jazz waiting on deck. They had a grand time in New Orleans back on January 9th, destroying the Hornets in a 109-80 rout. LA star Kobe Bryant said he will be more aggressive on offense to test opponents’ double-teams, and he proved this by scoring 34 points on Tuesday night.

Lakers are 19-7 ATS in their last 27 road games.

Hornets: The Hornets are also in the middle of a tough scheduling run, following up games against Houston and San Antonio with this one against the Lakers and then one at Detroit. New Orleans is happy to have forward David West (ankle) back in the lineup, as West scored 29 points last time out against the Spurs in a 25-point victory. The Hornets defeated the Lakers 118-104 back on November 6th at Staples Center.

Hornets are 19-5 ATS in their last 23 games against the Pacific Division.

Spurs: San Antonio head coach Gregg Popovich is “concerned” with improving his team's overall performance, and rightfully so after suffering a 25-point defeat to the Hornets on Wednesday. The Spurs might be 7-3 SU in their last 10 games, but they are just 2-7-1 ATS.

Pistons (-3, O/U 178.5): Detroit is coming off a loss to the 76ers on Wednesday, which coach Flip Saunders said his team played “too cool.” Pistons F/C Rasheed Wallace (ankle) has returned and scored 23 points with 15 rebounds against San Antonio in January. Chauncey Billups is averaging 21 ppg over his last 10, but according to team insiders Richard Hamilton’s energy level and mental focus have “gone down” since the All-Star Break.

Pistons are 7-1-1 ATS in their last 9 games against the Southwest Divison.
